25th Birthday Bash – DAY 2: Music

Day two of my birthday bash week is about another favorite thing of mine–music! My mother, at a young age, instilled a love of music within in me. I knew the words to every Journey, Foreigner, Creedence Clearwater and Meatloaf song before I was in kindergarten. I have a pretty eclectic taste in music and I can find at least a few songs in every genre that I’ll listen to..yes, even the rap/hiphop stuff that my boyfriend listens to. I’ve even made a mix called “Acceptable Rap/HipHop songs for when Jamie is the in car.” I have a love for classic rock that has 40 year old men taking a double take when I drive by..because we all know that it sure isn’t my junky car they are looking at. My other love is what has been labeled by people as “indie/alternative” music and even that is quite eclectic!

Some of my favorites: Modest Mouse, Belle & Sebastian, Kings of Convenience, Muse, MGMT, Passion Pit, Architecture in Helsinki, Radiohead, Wilco, Joanna Newsom, Regina Spektor, Death Cab (mostly their stuff), Pavement, Tilly and the Wall, Mates of State, Band of Horses, Eisley, Bright Eyes, Vampire Weekend, Rilo Kiley…and the list could go ON and ON.

I’m able to connect so greatly to music just as I am with books. I love good lyrics, fun beats, originality and beautiful voices.  I connect music with memories which is incredible for me because in those songs that remind me of my mom, she is able to keep living on. This giveaway that I’m about to announce is very dear to me. Rob Sheffield’s book Love is A Mix Tape is really special to me and meeting him and talking about music and how it’s gotten us through difficult times and helped us remember was incredible.

  1. I'm not as big a music fan as I am a book lover. I enjoy music, but I don't have a lot of favorite bands. The one exception is Ben Folds. I don't love everything he does, but I do love that he is always trying something new (band, solo, college acappella, orchestral arrangements, and most recently, writing the music for Nick Hornby's lyrics).

Music forms strong associations for me. Just hearing a certain song or artist can instantly bring back long forgotten memories of a time when or place where I listened to that particular music.

I like that you made your boyfriend an acceptable rap/hip-hop mix…very clever!

  2. We are music soul mates. I'm not even kidding. Same.Exact.Taste. I'll bet you love LCD Soundsystem too?

  3. Erin– LOVE Ben Folds!! Oh my gosh! So good! I'm pretty sure that the bf and I (when we get married) will dance to The Luckiest. Haha and I'm glad you like my idea! It got ridiculous. He would listen to horrible music and so I decided that a big old mix of stuff that I actually liked would work. Most of it was stuff I loved in middle school and high school (Ludacris, Shaggy, etc. etc.)

Brenna– LCD Soundsystem is soo good! I was JUST rocking out to Daft Punk Is Playing At My House when I was cleaning yesterday.

  4. I love breakup songs more than love songs or any genre. I dunno why but I super love them.

  5. So, I'm pretty excited. We have a pretty similar taste in music. And by pretty similar i mean, the exact same.

However there are some favorites of mine that were not listed, so I'll share: We Are Scientists, Jukebox the Ghost and Slow Runner.

Take a listen if you get the chance, but mainly: HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

  6. Love We Are Scientists! Never heard of the other two but will check them out!

  7. I recently went to a Muse concert at a park near my home, it was so amazing! There were so many people there. Although I must admit I love smaller venues more, it's more intimate. My favourite bands include Lifehouse, Muse, The Killers, Sara Bareilles (she's amazing live!), Snow Patrol, Mumford & Sons.. I could go on and on.

  8. I love Vampire Weekend and Muse!
My faves tend to shift around a bit, so right now I like Mumford and Sons, Orange Avenue, and Dirty Heads 😀

  9. Anastasia says:

I live for music like I live for books! I, too, have super eclectic taste & I love it! My favorites range from mainstream Maroon 5 to indie Corinne Bailey Rae to foreign (love reggaeton & greek music – I have my college roommate to thank for that!), and I have a zillion playlists for every mood/season/whim you can think of!
Reading about other people who love music gets me excited about music all over again… I think I'm going to mosey on to my itunes and make a new playlist right now!

    Happy (early) bday!! xoxo

  10. my favorite music is probably mostly classic rock. I love Journey, that's my all time favorite, or the Eagles. Or AC/DC. Love all that. Nothing like it!!
I also love Breaking Benjamin, that's my favorite newer band ever… I also enjoy main stream stuff. And them of course I am in love with eminem.
    🙂
I agree about connecting with music. I can hear a song, and usually remember what year of school I was in when it came out, and a situation where I heard it, like at a dance or at a party or something.
I could go on about music forever, but I'll stop it here. 🙂
I'm a new follower, and I'm probably going to stalk you on goodreads. Happy Early birthday! I turned 25 in August.

  11. Holley–LOVE The Eagles and AC/DC! Feel free to stalk me on GR. Love new friends that like books and music! 🙂

Anastasia– We are just destined to be bffs clearly! Books, fashion and music in common! WOOO!

  12. I listen to a lot of random music…various popular songs, as well as musical theater soundtracks and, recently (thanks to my farmer boyfriend), some country.

  13. Natanya– I LOVE musical soundtracks and I do like me some country! Not all of it but there is a good amount that I do like.

  14. irisonbooks says:

Music! My favourite topic when I'm not babbling about books. If you like Bright Eyes, you might want to give my all-time-favourite band a try: The Veils. They're from New Zealand/England and Finn Andrews, the lead singer, writes amazing lyrics. Also, their live-performances are very intense. Some people dislike the sound of the voice, but then you like Bright Eyes so that should not be a problem.

  15. Iris– Never heard of them. So excited to give them a listen! I'm always down for new music!

  16. Mollie Katie says:

I grew up listening to Billy Joel, Elton John, Carole King, James Taylor, Gloria Estefan & The Miami Sound Machine, etc.

My first concert was an Elton John show when I was 7 years old. I had a ridiculously high fever but I convinced my Mom to take me anyway because (A) I really really really wanted to go and (B) she couldn't find a babysitter just 2 hours before the show. I had a great time but I overheated during intermission and briefly passed out, scaring the bejeezus out of my Mom. But it was worth it! 🙂

  17. I have so many favorites but here are a few: The Get Up Kids, Brand New, Something Corporate, Jack's Mannequin, Muse, and The Starting Line. If I want something 'fun' to listen to Cobra Starship is always a good pick.

There's one New Found Glory album that always reminds me of the summer before my senior year in high school. The song "Barbie Girl" reminds me of my best friend from middle school. For some reason we loved that song. There's also a handful of songs that always make me cry because of what they remind me of. And I'm going to stop now (I could go on and on).

  18. IngridLola says:

Wow, what a GREAT giveaway! My favorite kind of music is prob alternative … I like a lot of 60s and 70s stuff too.

  19. Happy Birthday…thanks for the giveaways.

  20. Happy birthday again! these are some awesome giveaways you're doing. 🙂

Ever since I got to music school, I've kind of stopped listening to music. I'm not really sure what my favorite bands are anymore, though I grew up listening to and loving Dave Matthews Band and U2. These days I just listen to whatever is on the radio, or to my boyfriend playing the guitar. Also, I secretly love Lady Gaga.

There are certain songs that will always remind me of people and memories from a long time ago. Kill by Jimmy Eat World will always remind me of the first guy who ever treated me like crap. Come Clarity by In Flames will always remind me of my senior year of high school. Drops of Jupiter by Train will always remind me of my dad. Time After Time will always remind me of my ex. Isn't it strange how music does that? It can remind us of things we haven't though about in years.

In other news, everyone should go listen to this song. It never fails to make me happy.

  21. I've been dying to get my hands on these books – I am an 80's tragic fan – and my whole adolesence rushes back hearing songs like Mellancamps Jack and Diane, George Michaels Faith, Salt N Pepa's Push It and my favourite The Clapping Song by Belle Stars.
I saw ACDC in concert in 1988 – still love them :)(I have 12 years on you tho LOL)

I hope that this comp is international because I'd love to win.

    Happy Birthday!

  22. I absolutely love music! My favorite would have to be all of the amazing 80's stuff. I love Journey and Chicago… Seal… plus a whole bunch of modern stuff too. lol. Josh Groban, Michael Buble, Linkin Park, Yellowcard, Nickelback, etc. My taste is pretty eclectic too!

My favorite music memory would have to be performing, though. I sing, and have recorded several CD's… been on several tours. I love performing for people and touching their lives!

  23. I'm a southern girl, so my favorite music genre is, of course, country and I'm proud of it! Shania Twain has been my favorite singer since I was real little. I'll listen to anything, though, except rap.

Bands that I love: Nickelback, Third Eye Blind, AC/DC…

  24. Happy Birthday again! : )
I'm pretty ecclectic, love some trance, love pop, LOVE country… but for some reason I can't get into oldies, lol. : )

  25. Misha1989 says:

I love Within Temptation, Evanescence, Muse, The Fray, OneRepublic, Hooverphonic, Snow Patrol,Damien Rice, Scorpions, Sarah Brightman …*Phew*

  26. The Weakerthans. I love them. On Reconstruction Site, they have three songs that are written as Shakespearean sonnets.

  27. I adore a bunch of different things! My favorite group would have to be Third Eye Blind. I'm going to the Goo Goo Dolls concert at the end of the month. I love all 90's music… 🙂

  28. teaandliterature says:

I am not entirely sure that I have a movie memory but I do remember that my first time driving on the highway, the appropriately titled: "Life Is a Highway" came on.
