My Bookish Christmas Shopping List # 1 — For My Vamp-Loving Sister

Once a week, from now until Christmas, I’m going to be sharing my own shopping lists for family members or friends that I have on my list. I’ll be letting you know what they read, the challenges I face in choosing a book for them and some ideas I came up with. I’d love for you to also interject and recommend some that you think would fit as well! So check out my lists if you are also looking to find some books to give as Christmas gifts for the bookish people in your life.

Buying Books For

My 24 Year Old Twilight Loving Sister

The Challenges

1. She only reads about 5 books per year

2. She really only reads vampire books (although she just DID read Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater) and NEEDS romance in her stories. Like HAS to have it or it is a no go.

3. She needs something that grabs her attention right from the start and continues the whole way through β€” she gets bored easily.

My Strategy

My strategy when trying to find books for her is going to be to find a few vampire books with prominent romances but also try to introduce her to the wonderfully wide world of other paranormal creatures that I think she’ll go for.

Books She Read & Enjoyed After Twilight

Books For Fans Of Twilight

Β Glass Houses by Rachel Caine
Shiver by Maggie Stiefvater
Marked by PC Cast + Kristin Cast

Books For Twilight Fans

Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Evernight by Claudia Gray
Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris

Paranormalcy by Kiersten White
Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins
City of Bones by Cassandra Clare

Werewolf YA Books For Twilight Fans

Raised By Wolves by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Nightshade by Andrea Cremer
The Dark Divine by Bree Despain

Hush, Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick
Angelfire by Courtney Allison Moulton
Unearthly by Cynthia Hand

Shade by Jeri Smith-Ready
Hereafter by Tara Hudson
Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

The Iron King by Julie Kagawa
Wicked Lovely by Melissa Marr
The Faerie Ring by Kiki Hamilton

So these areΒ  my prospective picks for my sister who is a fan of the Twilight books and is looking for something to read after! I hope this is useful for any of you buying for the Twilight fans/paranormal fans in your life. Let me know if you have any suggestions for me to look into as I try to shop for her and find the best choices that I know she’ll love. I know she won’t really be interested in mermaid, zombies or any mythological creatures.

About Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

  1. I HIGHLY recommend Vampire Academy. I read the series earlier on in the year and read all 6(?) books in about a month. There addictive, easy to read and the perfect story for someone who needs a book that will capture and maintain their attention. Not to mention swoony Dimitri and badass Rose! Unearthly is also a great series but if I can make a suggestion: Hemlock by Kathleen Peacock. I myself wasn’t all that interested but after all the rave reviews, I took a chance on it and I’m SO glad I did! I’ve never read a werewolf book in my life before but it was truly epic. I couldn’t wait to know what was going to happen next and it is the first book of what I think is going to be a great series.

I have a friend who I like to recommend books to from time to time and since she like’s to read but doesn’t have much time to, I always make sure whatever I give her to read, it’s super addictive and compelling; something I know that’ll grab her attention quickly, so I know EXACTLY what type of books your looking for. After hearing what your sister likes, I’m positive that she would enjoy the Vampire Academy series and Hemlock. Plus, since I love romance in my books as well, I can vouch that both get a big tick in that department. Trust me, there is plenty of swooning and kissing to be had! πŸ˜€

Hope I’ve been of help and whatever you decide to gift your sister, I hope she loves it and that it brings out the reading bug in her!

    • Yeah, I definitely think VA is going to be one I get for her! Definitely checking out Hemlock..sounds like it would be up her alley!

  2. You have a lot of great options already. You might also look into Beautiful Creatures by Kami Garcia and Maragaret Stohl.

    • Thanks Brandy! I haven’t read that series either so maybe I’ll get it for both of us πŸ˜› That’s the beauty about buying books for family..I can borrow! haha But yeah everyone RAVES about that series!

  3. I highly recommend Vampire Academy too!! It’s a MUST read. She’ll love it! I don’t know about the Charlaie Harris series though. I heard it gets craay craaay and this is coming from a person who loves True Blood. I would substitute it with The Black Dagger Brotherhood series. It’s the biggest adult paranormal series evaar and its romance. Personally, I didn’t love the first book but that’s because I generally dislike 97% of paranormal books but I’ve never met a single person who doesn’t just luurve BDB.

I also recommend Nevermore by Kelly Creagh. I have not read it but it looks like a heavy romance oriented paranormal book & people just absolutely love it.

Oh!!!! The Soul Screamer series by Rachel Vincent! Balances the romance and action perfectly. There is volume with a prequel novella, the first book and the second book all in one book so that’s kind of a nice book to gift (and easier for your wallet! So you could get her more books too haha)

As for the Mortal Instruments series, that’s another one I enjoyed and she probably will too.

There is also the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. I haven’t read it but its paranormal romance and hiiiiighly love and recommended.

Hope this helped! I can’t wait to see your other lists!

    • YOU ARE AMAZING! Checking out alllll of these! I totally think she’d LOVE the Lux series by the sounds of it. You rock. Seriously.

  4. def get her charlaine harris sookie books. i am a twilight fan but i read these after twilight. sookie’s world is amazing!!!!! love them!

    • Awesome! I read the first two and totally think she’d be into them, too! And I think also it will be good to throw in an adult romance in there for her!

      • Im a fan of the show and the show is getting pretty out there but I read all the books in about 2 weeks when I was pregnant with my daughter…black dagger brotherhood is good too like the other reader mentioned! So many good books I cant believe she only reads 5 a year πŸ™‚

  5. I’d recommend the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning. It’s a series about the Fae. Easy to read, interesting, and sexy!

  6. DEFINITELY Vampire Academy! That and House of Night were better than Twilight, in my opinion. And I say that with having loved Twilight so much that it got me reading again!

  7. I think the Sookie Stackhouse series is a great option for her (especially if she loves the show, True Blood).

You should also consider the F.R.E.A.K.S. Investigation Squad series by Jennifer Harlow (Mind Over Monsters & To Catch A Vampire). These books feature a kick-ass heroine, sexy vamps AND hot werewolves as well as TONS of romantic tension and action. Plus they feature other monsters/paranormal abilities so it’s a great way to introduce her to something other than vampires. They are quick, easy reads and also witty and entertaining. Seriously, they’re highly addictive and I loved them both.

  8. I love this list! I think I’d recommend the first book on each list the most just because those’re books I ended up loving after Twilight. Except Hush, Hush. I’d rather Unearthly any day. This is a great idea for a series post, bro!

  9. First of all, this series of posts – AWESOME idea. I love it so, so much and clearly think that you’re a genius for putting it together.

Second of all, I’m surprised she liked Shiver. I think, for me, that book moves along a bit… well, slower, compared to other books. I am happy she enjoyed it though!

  10. Awesome list!!! Highly recommend Vampire Academy and I would also rec. The Blue Bloods Series by Melissa De La Cruz. Angels/Vamps Galore!

  11. Funny, my little sister sounds just like yours! Although I think this year I’m not buying her a book for Christmas. I think she’s read four books this year, and they were all for school. She’s writing her exit exams for high school and starting university next year. I guess I should give her a break.

  12. try the night world series by LJ Smith theyre the best! they all interwine with the others (like sarah dessen books) and they have vamps shapeshifters witches all kinds of stuff!

  13. ashes…. better than the hunger games…

  14. Nicole Torres says:

Your list seems perfect! I’ve read so many of them that I know your sister will love them! They’re filled with romance galore! I highly recommend the Lux series by Jennifer L Armentrout. Daemon Black makes for some steamy chemistry! A great romance in those books! I also recommend the Immortal Rules (Blood of Eden #1) by Julie Kagawa. A vampire book with a kind of forbidden love. A very very good read! And if your sister loved the Morganville Vampire series by Rachel Caine I suggest some of her other series like Weather Wardens or a new one called the Revivalist series. Very good reads!
You can also try Fallen series by Lauren Kate, with the whole fallen angel theme going on there. Or even Defiance by C.J Redwine. The romance in that book is perfect. You get to experience it from both Rachel and Logan’s perspective πŸ™‚ I’m a huge fan of romance as well, it has to be in the book or not interested unless it’s highly interesting.
Another very very good read was the Child Thief by Brom. It may have some mythical creatures but… It puts a dark twist on Peter Pan and it’s a flawless read. A book to this day I can not get over. The characters are amazing and it even has drawn pictures in the beginning of each chapter that Brom drew himself. The pictures are black and white like sketch and depict the characters, and what the chapter will involve. An amazing read and I recommend it to everyone!
There is also the Archangel Academy series with vampires alike! Although the main character is gay and the romance involves the two guys… But it is cute nontheless! I always tend to love the gay characters more than the main characters so this series was perfect for me! I have so many list of books I can give so I’m sorry if this may seem long!
I also recommend Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi and Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo. Blood Ninja by Nick Lake is also very good! Vampire Ninjas? What’s not to like?
Those are just a portion of my reading list and I hope this helps for future reference! Good luck in finding your sister a book πŸ™‚ I’m sure you’ll find one soon enough if you haven’t already!

  15. so i have read all of your Christmas lists and find myself looking and adding books to my wish list. lol. thanks.
