Ten Characters I’d Love To Dress Up As For Halloween

Top Ten Tuesday, as  always, is hosted at my other blog — The Broke & the Bookish

This week’s topic: Top Ten Characters I’d Want To Dress Up As For Halloween

I’m imagining a fun Halloween party in which all my bookish friends are dressed up as book characters. HOW FUN WOULD THAT BE?

In other Halloween fun: Last year I actually made 10 costumes INSPIRED by books if you want to check that out — I did a whole photo set with how to put that costume together.  Last week I dressed up 5 of my favorite YA couples in couples costumes for Halloween. Can you guess who was Google Maps? Han Solo and Princess Leia?

Manon Blackbeak // Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas: If you haven’t read Heir of Fire yet, you don’t even KNOW the awesome that is Manon. She was a character I wasn’t sure that I was going to like but she won me over. She’s a witch and she is badass. Bonus points for a wyvern.

Linh Cinder // Cinder by Marissa Meyer — I actually put together this costume in my “costumes inspired by books I’ve read” post but I totally want to be a cyborg mechanic. Cinder is badass.

Celaena // Throne of Glass series: Caelana is a badass assassin and I want to be her. OKAY.

Sam McKenna //  Rites of Passage by Joy N. Hensley: It’s not often that I encounter a main character in contemporary who has that PHYSICAL badassness that I come across so often in fantasy/dystopian lit. But Sam? SHE IS THAT. She is one of the toughest people at her military academy even when the boys club is against her and trying to make life unbearable for her. One year I’m pretty sure I DID dress up in some military stuff my stepdad had so this would be easy. And Will could be my very own DRILL.

Mary Howard // Brazen by Katherine Longshore: I’m sorry but I’m just picturing the pretty dresses from Reign and it would be fun to dress up like a lady of King Henry VIII court!

Katniss // Hunger Games — Let’s just be honest…I want to carry a bow and arrow around. But can someone braid my hair because I SUCK at it?

Clara // Unearthly by Cynthia Hand: I loved this series and I would love to dress up as Clara when she is an angel (not the normal teenage girl part of her life) and I would SOOOO try to make Will dress up as my very own cowboy.

Elizabeth Bennet // Pride & Prejudice: I’d pick something that resembles the dresses Keira Knightly wore in the adaptation.

Eleanor // Something Strange & Deadly by Susan Dennard: It would be so fun to wear a Victorian era dress & a parasol.

Maddie // Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: I actually made a Code Name Verity costume (very easy to make) but I would love to go as Maddie and be a fighter pilot for the night…something that I would NEVER do in my real life.

So tell me…which characters from books would YOU want to dress up as at my fabulous bookish Halloween party?

  1. I’m from Australia, so we don’t celebrate Halloween, but I always though Wilma from The Flinstones would be cool. Ha!

  2. Seriously, Celaena and Manon would be such badass costumes.

  3. What a wonderful, wonderful list. You are so creative. My TTT List for Halloween

  4. Great choices, Jamie. I think Maddie is such a good choice. The costume would be easy to make. I’m looking forward to reading more of Throne of Glass so I can meet Manon!

    • YES last year I made one inspired by CNV (I linked to it in this post) and I made it using things you could easily find in your closet or at least for cheap at the mall.

  5. I will braid your hair if you’re okay with me coming as Jessica Darling. I, of course, would wear a ME YES ME tshirt.

  6. I just finished Heir of Fire and I really wasn’t feeling Manon at the beginning but by the end I had really grown to like her 🙂

  7. Great choices! This was a tricky one for me because I’ve never given it much thought, being Aussie and therefore no Halloween so no dressing up, although it is slowly but surely infiltrating… It took me longer than it should’ve, but Celaena, Katniss and Elizabeth Bennet all made my list. Hopefully I’ll be in the States for Halloween one year and I can experience it in all it’s glory!

  8. WITH WOULD BE SO MUCH FUN TO HAVE A BOOK-ISH HALLOWEEN PARTY! I totally think we should do it, it would be an awesome way for reinforcing how great being inside this community is. Also great picks, I would love to be Celaena too, but I’m afraid I couldn’t live up to her snarkyness and badassery haha

  9. Great list. I have Cinder on my list too, I think she would be fun to dress up as if I was doing it this year. I have Katniss on my list as well.

    My TTT

  10. Haha. I said the exact same thing about dressing up at Elizabeth Bennet – that I’d want to wear a dress similar to the Keira Knightly movie.

  11. Dressing up as Maddie would be awesome – I’m reading Code Name Verity at the moment and I love her character. Katniss made my list too, purely because she’s awesome. I still need to read Cinder but dressing up as a cyborg mechanic sounds so awesome, I kind of wish I was doing it this year.

  12. I would definitely want to be Celaena!! I mean I want to BE her in real life anyway. Haha. Also… I totally have a mockingjay pin and braided my hair when I went to see catching fire in theaters… so katniss prob should’ve been on my list! I forgot. Ahh Elizabeth Bennett! Definitely!!

  13. As it seems we have some similar choices. I think my top choice would be to dress as Celaena. I just love her. I’m currently reading the 3rd book (and sadly only 50 pages into it) and can’t wait to really dig into it and meet Manon. I need a new favorite character in that book. Katniss is another one I would love to dress as, but I also suck at braiding hair so if you find someone who is capable of that please send them my way later.

You have an excellent list of costume ideas! I’m pretty sad to not do anything for Halloween this year. But retail seems to be making so I work til 10 on Friday night and then go back in at 10 in the morning on Saturday (is that even enough time to sleep? and eat?) so any plans that I would even attempt to make would just not work out well. That and I should probably make some friends around here first. Hope you have a great Halloween!!

  14. I think Eleanor would be an awesome costume, I love steam punk, Victorian outfits! I think Linh Cinder would be awesome as well, I love the outfit you picked out for her last year. This year my husband and I are going for Iago and Jafar 🙂

  15. Elizabeth Bennett and Katniss were on my list, too! The only other book I’ve read was Cinder and I felt meh about that (I didn’t not like it, it was just too techy sci-fi for me to really grasp). The others are on my TBR list.

  16. I love Katniss, but I don’t think I’d want to be her for Halloween- I’d probably end up losing the bow after I got tired of carrying it around.

But Elizabeth Bennet- I’d love to dress as her! Actually, if I had a dress similar to Keira Knightley’s, I’d probably want to wear it even when it wasn’t Halloween!
