New To The Queue {20}

New To the Queue is a sporadic thing around here wherein I give you a tiny glimpse into some of the books, movies, tv shows and bands I’ve recently added to my never ending queue of things to read/watch/listen to. For past posts, go here!

Cloudwish by Fiona Wood

Cloudwish by Fiona Wood (Amazon // Goodreads)

Publication Date – October 2016

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:  OH MAN. I looooved Fiona Wood’s Wildlife and I had no idea that she had another one coming out this year here in the US (it’s already out in Australia). I saw the publisher tweet about it and I was like AHKLFHOIHALAH!!! how did I not know!?!?!

What It’s About: From The Novl’s website — “Cloudwish is a coming-of-age story of identity, feminism, immigration, and it stars a girl by the name of Vân Uoc. For Vân Uoc, fantasies fall into two categories: nourishing or pointless. Daydreaming about attending her own art opening? Nourishing. Daydreaming about Billy Gardiner, star of the rowing team who doesn’t even know she’s alive? Pointless. So what happens when Billy actually notices her? And seems to genuinely like her? Staying out of the spotlight just might be impossible. Beyond the drama of high school, Vân Uoc is also dealing with her mother’s PTSD from a traumatic emigration from Vietnam.”

A Curious Beginning Deanna Raybourn

A Curious Beginning by Deanna Raybourne ( Goodreads // Amazon)
Publication Date- September 2015

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
Since becoming obsessed with this tv show I wanted some mystery recs (especially historical mystery recs) and this one was recommended to me and it looked REALLY good when I checked it out.

What It’s About: Set in 1887, Veronica plans to continue her travels and scientific pursuits after burying her aunt but before she can leave England she thwarts a plan intended to abduct her and then spends her time trying to figure out who would be plotting against her with the help of a German baron.

Seven Days Of You

Seven Days of You by Cecilia Vinesse  ( Goodreads)
Release Date: March 2017

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
I can’t remember where I saw it but it looked like a super cute romance plus it’s set in Tokyo. I WANT IT NOWWW March 2017 is so far.

What It’s About: Sophia has 7 days left in Tokyo before she moves back to the US and then she finds out that a guy she has had a tumultuous relationship has moved back and reappears in her life. She doesn’t want him to ruin her last 7 days but after some expected things happen she finds that maybe she misjudged things with him….but is 7 days too little too late?

Everland Wendy Spinale

Everland by Wendy Spinale ( Amazon // Goodreads)

Release Date: May 2016

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
It showed up in the mail, I had never heard of it but I’m like SO down for Peter Pan retellings. Peter Pan was one of my fave Disney movies as a kid.  IT SOUNDS AWESOMEEEEEE.

What It’s About: It’s like a steampunk/dystopian Peter Pan retelling set in a London that has been destroyed by disease and bombs where only the children have survived. Captain Hook is the head of the German army who is trying to steal kids to experiment on them to find a cure to the disease.

*NOTE: This does not mean these are all available on Netflix streaming — I have streaming AND I get one disc out because Netflix never has the movies I want so adding it to my queue could be my disc queue and not streaming. Felt the need to clarify because I always get people excited thinking something is streaming on Netflix and it’s not!”

Ripper Street

Ripper Street

Why I Added It To My Netflix Queue:  It came up on my Netflix under “because you watched Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries” which YES OMG JACK THE RIPPER.

What It Is About: “In April 1889 — six months after the last Jack the Ripper killing — East London is emerging into a fragile peace, hopeful that the murderer’s reign of terror might have finally run its course.”

The Big Short

The Big Short

Why I Added It To My Netflix Queue:  I was sooo behind on all the movies that were nominated and awarded for stuff lately but I heard a lot of talk about this one so I want to finally watch it.

What It Is About: “Before the housing and credit bubble of 2007 triggers an international economic meltdown, a handful of financial outsiders sees the crash coming and bets against the big banks in a daring play that could reap them huge profits.”

Why I Added It To My Netflix Queue: I never watched this one back in the day so I want to go back to it.

What It Is About: “Created by J.J. Abrams, this action-packed spy series made a star of lithe leading lady Jennifer Garner, who redefined armed and dangerous as double agent Sydney Bristow, a CIA operative whose mission is to destroy a global crime syndicate.”

Lapsley — Long Way Home

Why I Added It To My Musical Rotation:  I’ve been following her singles and enjoying them so I was awaiting this. Have only listened to the whole thing once since it came out at the beginning of this month but plan to listen to it more to get to know the tracks I didn’t already know!

Aurora — All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend

Why I Added It To My Musical Rotation: OMG I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS ALBUM LIKE YOU DON’T EVEN KNOW. I’ve been listening to her singles (pretty sure I’ve picked a couple as monthly rewind picks) and this album hit and I’ve pretty much had Warrior and a few other songs on repeat.

Lucius — Good Grief

Why I Added It To My Musical Rotation: Lucius Wildewoman made my best of list for 2013 on this blog and for very good reason — it was such a great album. I was SO looking forward to a new album and it has NOT disappointed in my couple listens since it came out on the 11th.

If you want to catch what I’m listening to…follow me on Spotify! Let me know who you are so I can follow back and check out youuur music!

YOUR TURN! Tell me one book you added to your TBR list recently! Tell me a movie/tv show you added to your must watch list! Tell me a new band/singer you just added to your musical rotation! Also, have you read/watched/listened to anything on my recently added list? Or did I make you add something to YOUR queue? Tell me, tell me!

About Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

  1. “Alias” is so good! I finished it last summer (or thereabouts) for my first time watching it, and really liked it. Plus it was fun to see Jennifer Garner in something before she become a well-known box office star. 🙂

  2. I have Everland on my wish list! It sounds so interesting. Ripper Street looks cool, I’ll have to check that out on Netflix. A movie I’ve been dying to see since I’ve read it is Room. That book gave me all of the feels and I just need to see it on the big screen now. Great post — awesome recs!

    • It really DOES look so interesting! And omg I need to watch Room as well. I own the book and want to read that first though!

  3. I really, really want to read Cloudwish too! I’m so bummed that Book Depository doesn’t have any stocks of it (I wanted to order a copy together with Summer Skin by Kirsty Eagar).

  4. “The Winner’s Curse” is a book I recently added to my TBR! And I’m currently reading “The Storyspinner” by: Becky Wallace!
I still need to watch Daredevil! So, I guess that’s been added to my list of “will get to someday… but is going to re-watch other shows” list lol.
Hmm, nobody really music wise. New song obsession though? “From The Ground Up” by: Dan + Shay!
I watched some of Alias when it was on tv and really liked it!!
You should check out Agents of SHIELD 😉

  5. Cloudwish!!! I’ve been waiting for this one for EVER. Confession: I didn’t love Wildlife. And I haven’t read Six Impossible Things. But this story sounds right up my alley and I’ve heard nothing but great things about how Fiona Wood portrays Van Uoc & her Vietnamese culture so I am SUPER excited for this one.

Also… steampunk Peter Pan? Uh, yes please. I’ll keep an eye out for your review!

    • I haven’t heard a bad thing about Cloudwish from all my fave Aussies that I trust!! Verryyyyy excited. WHY CAN’T WE HAVE IT NOW.

It sounds awesome right?? I always get a little scared with YA premises that sound too good to be true.

  6. I just added Shelter by Jung Yun to my TBR list– I’d seen some great reviews on it, and figured why not? I also re-upped my commitment to see Batman v Superman today after reading some reviews on it. It comes out on Friday!

  7. OMG that Lucius album is so good, is it not? We’ve been listening to it constantly. SO GOOD. SO EXCITED TO SEE THEM.

I loved Alias and I have very fond memories of binge watching it with my college friends – first on New Year’s Eve in Boston (because that’s what you do when it’s -20 degrees Celsius out), and then in common rooms during undergrad. VERY VERY FUN. Enjoy.

  8. Alias is my favorite show of all time. I recommend it to everyone who has never watched it!

    • I’m excited to watch it!! I just never ended up watching it when it came out — I was in high school and I feel like I only watched a few shows religiously because you had to be home for them. SO MUCH EASIER TO WATCH SHOWS THESE DAYS WITH DVR AND ON DEMAND AND HULU ETC.

  9. I love Phryne, too, and the books are really fun as well. Hope you enjoy Deanna Raybourn’s book, and if I may recommend, here’s my own 1920s caper, A Poisonous Journey: A Lady Evelyn Mystery

  10. RIPPER STREEEEEET. It’s in my queue as well, and I’m kicking myself over not watching it yet. I’ve eyed it for ages. I think it’ll make a great show to pass the summer nights.

I wasn’t too interested in Fiona Woods’s previous book, but THIS one sounds totally up my alley. Adding it to my TBR! Thanks, Jamie.

    • I feel like I’ve definitely passed over it before like looking for other shows I know I wanted to watch but when it came up specifically like “because you liked Miss Fisher’s” I’m like OOOOOOOOOOHHH.

  11. Ahh these books look so amazing!! I’ve just added Everland, Seven Days of You and Cloudwish to my wishlist! *_*

  12. Seven Days of You sounds SO cute, I really want to read it!!! And I love the cover! That’s smart about Netflix, I think about adding discs once in awhile but between streaming and Amazon prime (and the fact that I’m perfectly happy watching my dvds for the millionth time), I’ve held out for now haha.

    • It’s one of those things where I started out with the discs and even after like a year of having the same one I still never canceled lolol but now I’m back to using them. Fun throwback: I got Blockbuster Online back in the day. I had THE BEST deal — probs why they went under tbh haha. I was in the first wave of people who got it so I was grandfathered in so my price was super low and I would get two discs out at a time and I could return them in store for something that was there. PLUS every month I got 2 free coupons for in store rentals. Suffice it to say for YEARS in college Will and I never paid for a rental at all. I soooo got more than my moneies worth. RIP BLOCKBUSTER.

  13. I just discovered Aurora on Spotify Lat week, and I really like her! Her music sort of reminds me of a cross between Sia and Florence + the Machine. I’m really digging “Running with the Wolves.”

  14. Patty @ Patty's Book Corner says:

I love seeing what you’re listening to. I was just thinking I need someone else to listen to and I think I’m in love with Lapsley after one song! My latest music obsession is Troye Sivans album Blue Neighbourhood. I’m so in love with that album.

Ripper Street is awesome. They said they were done after 3 seasons but I think I keep seeing things about a 4th so I might have to go check up on that.

    • YES I’m so happy you are digging Lapsley! I am ALWAYS happy to give out music recs if you are ever in need!! And yas love Troye Sivans!! Are you on Spotify?? We should be friends if so!

      • Patty @ Patty's Book Corner says:

I’m not on Spotify but it would probably be so much easier if I was! If I remember correctly, you were also a fan of Broods? They’ve got a new song out called ‘Free’ if you didn’t know.

  15. Ripper Street is a FANTASTIC show! You’re going to LOVE it 🙂

    • I can’t wait to start it soon! I so want to start it before I go to London at the end of the month because I’m corny and would pre-game like that 😛
