New To The Queue

New things to read, watch, listen to

New To the Queue is a semi-monthly thing around here wherein I give you a tiny glimpse into some of the books, movies, tv shows and bands I’ve recently added to my never ending queue of things to read/watch/listen to. For past posts, go here!

Here We Are Now by Jasmine Warga

Here We Are Now by Jasmine Warga (Amazon // Goodreads)
Publication Date – November 2017

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list: I really thought her debut, My Heart & Other Black Holes, was really great so I wanted to try another book from her! It sounds really good plus I can’t pass up a road trip book!

What It’s About: Taliah hasn’t ever known her father, despite sending letters to him since she was 13, until he shows up at her doorstep (while her mom is out of town) and happens to be a famous rock star and asks her to up and go with him on a road trip so she can meet her dying grandfather. With her best friend in tow she sets off to get to know her father and learn things about her family.

The Bear and the Nightingale

The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden ( Goodreads // Amazon)
Publication Date-
January 2017

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
I keep seeing it around since its release early this year and it seems so many of my friends are enjoying it!

What It’s About: Not 100% sure but it seems to be a historical fantasy drawing on Russian fairy tales and folklore about a girl who honors the spirits and does rituals to keep evil out of her home until her mom dies and her dad brings a new wife into the home who forbids these rituals — which brings the evil creatures out to play and the main character in a position to defy those she loves to protect them while drawing on a long concealed gift she possesses.

Noteworthy by Riley Redgate

Noteworthy by Riley Redgate  (Amazon // Goodreads)
Publication Date: May 2, 2017

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
It showed up in my mailbox and it looked super interesting! Love a book that has a big musical aspect to it and I hear it explores gender as a result of the main character dressing up in drag.

What It’s About: Jordan attends a performing arts school and is denied a spot in the school musical yet again. She decides to audition for a spot in an elite acapella group at school but the problem is that it’s all males…so she decides to dress in drag and ends up being exactly what they want which leads to quite the juggling act to pull it all off.

Beasts Made Of The Night

Beasts Made of Night by Tochi Onyebuchi ( Amazon // Goodreads)
Release Date: October 2017

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
It looks like an amazing, diverse fantasy book! It’s Nigerian influenced and I’m so ready to read more diverse fantasy!

What It’s About: I gotta put the actually summary to really capture how amazing it sounds for you because I won’t do it justice: “In the walled city of Kos, corrupt mages can magically call forth sin from a sinner in the form of sin-beasts – lethal creatures spawned from feelings of guilt.  Taj is the most talented of the aki, young sin-eaters indentured by the mages to slay the sin-beasts. But Taj’s livelihood comes at a terrible cost. When he kills a sin-beast, a tattoo of the beast appears on his skin while the guilt of committing the sin appears on his mind. Most aki are driven mad by the process, but 17-year-old Taj is cocky and desperate to provide for his family. When Taj is called to eat a sin of a royal, he’s suddenly thrust into the center of a dark conspiracy to destroy Kos. Now Taj must fight to save the princess that he loves – and his own life.”

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt Season 3

Why I Added It To My To Watch Queue:  Because Will and I have really enjoyed the past two seasons and look forward to more shenanigans with Kimmy and crew (especially Titus because he is my fave). It’s so quirky and absurd but we enjoy it!

What It Is About: “In the third season, Kimmy’s friend Titus gets things off to a bang when he returns from his four-month gig on a cruise ship. Meanwhile, Kimmy continues to find life a little perplexing.”

Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children movie

Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children

Why I Added It To My To Watch Queue: I really loved the book and am interested to see how it translates to a movie so I’m glad it’s finally on dvd now!

What It Is About: “After Jacob Portman unearths a cache of his grandfather’s old photos, curiosity about them leads the teen to a dilapidated former orphanage, where he discovers a group of children who are not only peculiar but also possess extraordinary powers.”

Girlboss on Netflix

Why I Added It To My To Watch Queue: I saw it pop up on Netflix and it looks good plus I keep meaning to read the book it is based on!

What It Is About: “Rebellious and broke, Sophia stumbles into creating an online business and learns how to be the boss. A comedy inspired by the best-selling memoir. ”

Misterwives — Connect The Dots

Why I Added It To My Listening Rotation:  I’ve been waiting for their new album and was super excited about the singles being dropped! I’ve only gotten to listen to it once fully so far since it was released a few days ago but I am digging it.

Harry Styles self titled album

Why I Added It To My Listening Rotation:  This is a pleasant surprise to me. I was never into One Direction, though some of their songs were super catchy and fun and got into my head, but I was listening to the New Music Friday playlist while I was doing some things around the apartment and I heard a song I liked and went over to add it to my playlist and I was like HARRY STYLES..I KNOW THAT NAME. To which I realized who he was. And I was like WELP I’m enjoying this. Been listening to the album off and on and I’m pretty damn impressed.

Oh Wonder self titled album

Why I Added It To My Listening Rotation: I had caught their single Drive back in August 2015 (my monthly playlists are the only reason I know this) and I had been waiting for a full album from them since. Then Ultralife dropped in April (I think, that’s at least when I heard it) and I was like OOH OOH new album…and then it came out last week! It was really worth the wait!!! LOVING IT.

If you want to catch what I’m listening to…follow me on Spotify! Let me know who you are so I can follow back and check out youuur music!

YOUR TURN! Tell me one book you added to your TBR list recently! Tell me a movie/tv show you added to your must watch list! Tell me a new band/singer you just added to your musical rotation! Also, have you read/watched/listened to anything on my recently added list? Or did I make you add something to YOUR queue? Tell me, tell me!
