Every Day by David Levithan

I love David Levithan’s books and boy did I love this one!! Every Day will be in theaters February 23.

Every day A wakes up up in another body and experiences another life for twenty four hours. A has no control over it and never knows what body will be next nor the rhyme or reason to it. All A knows is that the best way to get through the day is to just go through the motions of the characters life and try not to do anything out of character or that would really interfere with their life. A has successfully been able to do that until Justin’s body where A meets Rhiannon — Justin’s girlfriend — and makes a very real connection with her.

Monster book to movie

Monster by Walter Dean Myers

So many people I know rave about Walter Dean Myers books and I am going to start with this one so I can see the movie!! Monster will be premiering at Sundance Film Festival in January 2018.

“A teenager finds himself incarcerated at a New York juvenile detention center and charged with robbery and felony murder. Presented as a screenplay of Steve’s own imagination, and peppered with journal entries, the book shows how one single decision can change our whole lives.”

The Alienist
The Alienist
Coming To TNT on January  22

Okay so I have the most random story about how I was recommended this book: I was at a used book sale like 8 years ago maybe and some lady who ended up always being near me was super friendly and would ask me if I’ve read this or that and point out books she loved. She found this one in the stacks and was like I WILL PAY FOR THIS YOU HAVE TO READ IT. I had to buy it after that!!

“Crime reporter, John Moore, meets with psychologist, Dr. Laszlo Kreizler, to investigate a serial killer in New York during the late 19th century.”

The Miseducation of Cameron post

The Miseducation of Cameron Post
Premiering at Sundance  January 2018

I have had this book on my shelf since it came out and it’s really embarrassing that I haven’t read it yet!! I always do that. DEFINITELY going to get to it soon!

“When Cameron Post’s parents die suddenly in a car crash, her shocking first thought is relief. Relief they’ll never know that, hours earlier, she had been kissing a girl. But that relief doesn’t last, and Cam is soon forced to move in with her conservative aunt Ruth and her well-intentioned but hopelessly old-fashioned grandmother. She knows that from this point on, her life will forever be different. Survival in Miles City, Montana, means blending in and leaving well enough alone (as her grandmother might say), and Cam becomes an expert at both. Then Coley Taylor moves to town. Beautiful, pickup-driving Coley is a perfect cowgirl with the perfect boyfriend to match. She and Cam forge an unexpected and intense friendship — one that seems to leave room for something more to emerge. But just as that starts to seem like a real possibility, ultrareligious Aunt Ruth takes drastic action to ‘fix’ her niece, bringing Cam face-to-face with the cost of denying her true self — even if she’s not exactly sure who that is.”

Meg Steve Alten book to movie

Meg

Oh man…I get so freaked out about THINGS LURKING IN THE OCEAN.

On a top-secret dive into the Pacific Ocean’s deepest canyon, Jonas Taylor found himself face-to-face with the largest and most ferocious predator in the history of the animal kingdom. The sole survivor of the mission, Taylor is haunted by what he’s sure he saw but still can’t prove exists–Carcharodon megalodon, the massive mother of the great white shark. The average prehistoric Meg weighs in at twenty tons and could tear apart a Tyrannosaurus rex in seconds. Written off as a crackpot suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder, Taylor refuses to forget the depths that nearly cost him his life. With a Ph.D. in paleontology under his belt, Taylor spends years theorizing, lecturing, and writing about the possibility that Meg still feeds at the deepest levels of the sea. But it takes an old friend in need to get him to return to the water, and a hotshot female submarine pilot to dare him back into a high-tech miniature sub. Diving deeper than he ever has before, Taylor will face terror like he’s never imagined, and what he finds could turn the tides bloody red until the end of time.

Altered Carbon
TV Series Out On Netflix February 2

“It’s the twenty-fifth century, and advances in technology have redefined life itself. A person’s consciousness can now be stored in the brain and downloaded into a new body (or “sleeve”), making death nothing more than a minor blip on a screen. Onetime U.N. Envoy Takeshi Kovacs has been killed before, but his last death was particularly painful. Resleeved into a body in Bay City (formerly San Francisco), Kovacs is thrown into the dark heart of a shady, far-reaching conspiracy that is vicious even by the standards of a society that treats existence as something that can be bought and sold. For Kovacs, the shell that blew a hole in his chest was only the beginning.

But it is now in decline and its inhabitants – mother, son and daughter – are haunted by something more ominous than a dying way of life. Sweetbitter book to tv show

Sweetbitter
Coming To Starz in 2018

I’m excited for this show! Though I don’t currently have Starz…WAH. I had been interested in this book and then I saw it get not-so-stellar reviews but then a couple friends of mine really liked it and explained it in a way I think I’d like?? So we shall see.

“A lush, raw, thrilling novel of the senses about a year in the life of a uniquely beguiling young woman, set in the wild, alluring world of a famous downtown New York restaurant.”

You by Caroline Kepnes

You

STOKED FOR THIS!! This is going to be gooooood as a tv series. Totally think Penn Badgley is going to nail that role!

“When a beautiful, aspiring writer strides into the East Village bookstore where Joe Goldberg works, he does what anyone would do: he Googles the name on her credit card.

There is only one Guinevere Beck in New York City. She has a public Facebook account and Tweets incessantly, telling Joe everything he needs to know: she is simply Beck to her friends, she went to Brown University, she lives on Bank Street, and she’ll be at a bar in Brooklyn tonight—the perfect place for a “chance” meeting.

As Joe invisibly and obsessively takes control of Beck’s life, he orchestrates a series of events to ensure Beck finds herself in his waiting arms. Moving from stalker to boyfriend, Joe transforms himself into Beck’s perfect man, all while quietly removing the obstacles that stand in their way—even if it means murder.”

I LOVE THIS BOOK SO MUCH. If you love YA you should be reading Julie Murphy’s books! This is going to be an awesome movie!! No release date yet but it’s in post-production and I am pretty sure filming wrapped up in October!

“Self-proclaimed fat girl Willowdean Dickson (dubbed “Dumplin’” by her former beauty queen mom) has always been at home in her own skin. Her thoughts on having the ultimate bikini body? Put a bikini on your body. With her all-American beauty best friend, Ellen, by her side, things have always worked…until Will takes a job at Harpy’s, the local fast-food joint. There she meets Private School Bo, a hot former jock. Will isn’t surprised to find herself attracted to Bo. But she is surprised when he seems to like her back. Instead of finding new heights of self-assurance in her relationship with Bo, Will starts to doubt herself. So she sets out to take back her confidence by doing the most horrifying thing she can imagine: entering the Miss Clover City beauty pageant—along with several other unlikely candidates—to show the world that she deserves to be up there as much as any twiggy girl does. Along the way, she’ll shock the hell out of Clover City—and maybe herself most of all.”

In this charged atmosphere, enmity and grief give way to passion and betrayal.”

Between Shades of Gray

Between Shades of Grey

This is one of my favorite books by one of my favorite historical fiction authors!! I’m NOT prepared to see this on the big screen but I can only hope it will get more people reading this woman’s incredible books! They are changing the name to Ashes in the Snow for the movie (I’m assuming because of the FSoG franchise…might be confusing) and I see it’s in post-production and says 2018 release??

“In 1941, an aspiring artist and her family are deported to Siberia amidst Stalin’s brutal dismantling of the Baltic region. In a seemingly hopeless place, love is the only means of survival”

But the river, Margo’s childhood paradise, is a dangerous place for a young woman traveling alone, and she must be strong to survive, using her knowledge of the natural world and her ability to look unsparingly into the hearts of those around her. Her river odyssey through rural Michigan becomes a defining journey, one that leads her beyond self-preservation and to the decision of what price she is willing to pay for her choices.

Juliet, Naked by Nick Hornby book to movie

Juliet, Naked

I read this book a long time ago and I remember enjoying it but I recall nothing about it! Probably won’t reread it before the movie but definitely plan on seeing it!

“Juliet, Naked is the story of Annie, the long-suffering girlfriend of Duncan, and her unlikely transatlantic romance with once revered, now faded, singer-songwriter, Tucker Crowe, who also happens to be the subject of Duncan’s musical obsession.”

About Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

Comments

  1. Helena @ The Life of a Booknerd Addict says:

YES! I can’t wait for some of those movies! Especially Simon Vs The Homosapiens Agenda, because of helllo!!! Best book ever! Great post! xoxo

  2. Your anniversary is August 17? That’s my birthday! How fun! Sounds like it’s a great day for both of us to make our husbands go see Crazy Rich Asians!

Also, Where’d You Go, Bernadette? is so charming and sweet. Perfect book to start the year on, IMO.

    • It is!! And I agree…it’s bad we don’t live closer and we could force them to go together with us!!

YAY you just cemented my decision for that being the first book of the year for me! I need to start the year out like that!!

      • Yes! For real! That would be so fun. Or, at the very least, I could watch your sweet baby so you could have a night out together.

You won’t regret that decision! I loved how it was able to deal with some heavy stuff while maintaining a fun, almost comic tone. It was so nicely balanced. Enjoy!

  3. Confession: I’ve never been able to finish A Wrinkle in Time (sci-fi / fantasy just isn’t my thing), but I think the movie adaptation looks so cool! The cast seems incredible. I haven’t heard of a lot of these books, but you’ve helped me find plenty to add to my reading list!

  4. So many books. So many movies. Will I ever catch up? Most likely not. I think I’m most excited for the adaptation of Between Shades of Gray. I love that book so much!

  5. I was very excited to see The House With a Clock in its Walls on this list and yes, you probably DID read it as a kid (I know I did and I’m way older than you). It was originally published in 1973.

  6. Oh my god I can’t wait for so many of these!! Love, Simon; TATBILB; Dumplin! I loved the books so much.

I started Sweetbitter but couldn’t get into it for some reason. I would absolutely love to see it as a show though because the premise really intrigued me. Maybe I could switch to an audio version and try again.

  7. I CAN’T WAIT for the Wrinkle in Time movie!!! If the cast is anything to go by, it’s going to be amazing! 🙂 Thanks for the awesome list!

  8. There are so many great books on this list!!! I am ecstatic about Every Day, Where’d You Go Bernadette, Crazy Rich Asians, Simon <3, To All the Boys, Dumplin'. I am just beside myself.

  9. Heidi T Zee says:

The House With a Clock in its Walls was originally published in 1973 (and illustrated by Edward Gorey).

    • Someone else mentioned that! Who knows where my brain was when I didn’t check the other editions of the book. BUT that makes me feel better because I know I totally read this!!

  10. I am interested to see how The Darkest Minds plays out on screen!

  11. I need to see Simon vs. I am totally dragging the husband there. I am also eagerly awaiting Good Omens though I still have to restart and finish the actual book.

I am less eager about The Darkest Minds. I hope they can do justice to the van group dynamic

  12. Wow! I hadn’t even heard about some of these.

One of my favorite booklists to do is read-a-likes for books that are going to become movies.

Here’s the one I made for Love, Simon: http://www.yalsa.ala.org/thehub/2017/12/11/booklist-read-likes-simon-vs-homo-sapiens-agenda-becky-albertalli/

And one for To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before too: http://www.yalsa.ala.org/thehub/2016/11/21/booklist-lara-jean-read-likes/

(I need to start one for The Hate U Give!)

  13. Oh man, I didn’t know about like 95% of these book adaptations! Haha. I’m not *too* big on movies anymore, so I guess I just don’t really pay that much attention. But I do want to see some of these. I’ve only read Simon Vs. and Between Shades of Gray though, so I’ve got A LOT of catching up to do omg. I try to read books before I see the movies, but sometimes I just don’t have time or think it wouldn’t matter as much (The Girl on the Train was the last one, I think, that I just skipped ahead to the movie). But I do want to read a few of them, like A Wrinkle in Time, The Darkest Minds, and The Mazer Runner series. Also I’m so glad to see a tentative date for the BSOG movie, because I feel like I’ve been hearing about it FOREVER now, and I can’t wait for it to finally hit the big screen!

  14. Oh my gosh! Jamie! I’ve been reading your blog/following your social media for years, but professionally I’m a librarian, and did you know the American Library Association linked your blog in their biweekly newsletter?? I clicked on the title because I was interested in the topic, and BAM, I recognized the header. So awesome. 🙂

    • OMG REALLY???? I know some library account shared it on FB and I was getting mad traffic from it (I LOVE LIBRARIANS!) but ALA?!?!?!? That makes my heart happy!! Thank you for telling me!!

      • Adrianne Peterson says:

        I did too!
Here’s the blurb from the ALA email newsletter:
42 books that will become movies or TV shows in 2018
Jamie Bennett writes: “I had a lot of fun putting together last year’s Books to Read before the Movies Come Out and I couldn’t wait to put together this list for 2018. I am excited about many of these that I’ve already read and I found 42 new books to read before they come out as movies or TV shows.” Included are The Miseducation of Cameron Post; Where’d You Go, Bernadette; Crazy Rich Asians; and You….
        The Perpetual Page-Turner, Dec. 13; Aug. 29, 2016

  15. What an amazing list! I didn’t know about many of them! I’m most excited about The Wrinkle in Time, Ready Player One, & Good Omens. But there are going to be so many. And I think they do a better job in making good movies out of books with every year. American Gods is fantastic. Although, I’m sad that Brian Fuller the showrunner left the show before season 2. What I’m really – really waiting for is The Night Circus movie, series o both! =D But still no news…

  16. I am excited for a few of these, especially The Tale of Peter Rabbit!

  17. This gives me a lot of great books to choose from before they come out. After your analysis, I’m most excited to read The Girl in the Spider’s Web

  18. This is so cool! Thanks for sharing because I had no idea there were plans for so many books to movies in 2018 and I LOVE reading the book before the movie comes out! Pinning this so I don’t forget haha

  19. Monsters is really good – so glad its going to be a movie!

  20. I am really excited for You. I absolutely loved that book. I think you are right and that actor is gong to nail it. He looks like I envisioned Joe. I can’t imagine The Darkest Minds, but that is one on this list I have at least read. I will probably be reading some of these books as they come out to the screen so I can make mental comparisons. Or blog about them. Lol!
    Thanks for sharing this list!

  21. Maybe I should finally read Girl in the Spider’s Web. I never got past the first fifty pages. Not sure why. I miss Stieg Larsson. Lisbeth Salander is one of my favorite fictional characters, but I’m nervous about the upcoming movie and the recasting.
I’m really looking forward to Ready Player One even if I didn’t like the ending, I’m excited for the visuals and nostalgia!

  22. I LOVED Sweet Bitter! Going to check out a few more on this list 🙂
