This was a crazy year as you guys read from this post ! My niece came into the world, I got laid off (week before the next life event), I got married, I moved closer to the city….and I thought it would totally make the blog suffer. And to some degree it did, in terms of quantity of posts and number of books read but I felt like the quality remained despite my sporadic posting schedule. 2012 was a fun year on the blog and I felt like I connected with my readers even more through reviews, silly discussions and the more serious ones (errr were there any of those? I can’t remember). I felt creative, free and I just plain ol’ had a good time not taking myself so seriously and talking books with y’all.

So, in case you were late to the game or just missed it — I’m going to highlight the best of my year on the blog! Truly, thank you guys for all the support and love and I’m excited for 2013!

In January I started the year out right and posted about ways to challenge your bookish self in the new year! Then I talked about one of the most terrifying thing in my bookish life and found out that many of you have that same fear too! And I FINALLY FINALLY FINALLY read one of John Green’s solo books after reading collabs he’s done!

In February I shared some lessons my mom taught me that I apply to blogging. I then posed the question of “what makes someone your favorite author?” And, since I was knee deep in wedding planning, I compiled some great quotes to make a wedding readings from literature list. I also discovered a new favorite series (read the second book later on in the year which sealed the deal).

In March I moved from Blogger to self-hosted WordPress which was CRAZY and I lost some posts so I had to repost them. I did review two of my favorite books from 2012 – Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard and Legend by Marie Lu.

In April I had some really great discussions because I wasn’t reading too much because we were super busy with wedding planning and spent a weekend in Chicago with my blogging besties! I talked about book spoilers, RANTED like a mofo about bookish stereotypes, about how much I SUCK at reading series and admitted to how I have SUCH a hard time not finishing books and you all pretty much said “YOLO — stop reading books you hate”! That post lead to a new feature.

In May I had some fun and did a post about book inspired dates and I LOVED sharing my favorite book quotes with you.

In June I didn’t really post all that much because I was moving, my wedding dress came in, my bridal shower happened and wedding planning was CRAZY!
In July I was even more scarce but I did give you a sneak peek of my engagement photos, talked about some of the most vivid worlds & settings I have read and read and reviewed Bunheads by Sophie Flack which was really excellent!

In August…dun dun dun…I GOT MARRIED! I didn’t post much leading up to the wedding (August 17th) but came back full steam after with a sneak peek of my wedding, gave some bookish confessions (like how I’m a horrible library patron & other bookish sins) and got really candid with you all and confessed some things as a book blogger and you made me feel SO MUCH BETTER.

In September it was FULL STEAM AHEAD with blogging! I met John Green & you guys were super excited for me, I confessed a blogging fear that most of you understood, I reviewed For Darkness Shows The Stars (a fave of the year!), talked about how to find out about book events.

October was a great month and I definitely got my mojo back! I talked about how I love books with talented MCs, reviewed some great books (Sweethearts by Sara Zarr, Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi and Every Day by David Levithan), how books are turning me into a super fit person.

November brought an awesome interview with the Epic Reads ladies, my most anticipated 2013 reads (OMG SO MANY GOOD ONES) and a review of the book I couldn’t wait to get my hands on – Just One Day by Gayle Forman!!

In December I slacked off a little bit but had some great discussions with you all — even it took it a liiiiittle too far in my comfort level with you all in this post, talked about a beautiful gift in reading and did lots of Best Of type lists — books, music, beauty, etc.

A Recap of My Life in 2012 — aka the year with the most life changes!

Gosh, 2012 was simultaneously one of the best years and one of the worst and I feel the need to debrief here in this space if you’ll allow me. Lots of happymaking things happened but I just really struggled — with my job and then Will losing his, figuring out what I want to do with my life, with longtime friendships floundering and just altogether feeling like I’m not exactly happy but not sure why. Lots of smiles, lots of tears, lots of laughs, lots of NEWNESS in my life….2012 was most certainly a memorable year. Got to take the good with the bad, yes? And with some of those BAD things I do see hope for the future. I am having high hopes for 2013. So let’s just recap my life in 2012:

Let’s preface this with that most of my life revolved around wedding planning this year!

2012 started off marvelously! In JANUARY my beautiful niece, Genevieve Grace, was born and that has changed my life in the most wonderful way. I’ve loved watching her grow and learn and she’s just such a blessing and has brought my sister and I closer together.

In FEBRUARY I got to see the lovely April from Good Books & Good Wine when she roadtripped to come to the Breathless Reads tour that was here in Philly. Great authors and a WONDERFUL time!

In MARCH my company moved buildings and so my life was consumed with moving, moving, moving and then wedding planning. Nothing of note.

In APRIL I got to meet my blogging bff JEN from Makeshift Bookmark FOR THE VERY FIRST TIME and hang out with my other besties again — Anna and Tara — in Chicago for RT Con. This was honestly the most fun weekend I had all year and one of my best memories..and that’s saying something considering HUGE life changes happened!

MAY was definitely busy with wedding planning but we had a great Memorial Day with new friends! May also signaled the crazy in my life — mostly everyone at my company got laid off.

JUNE started off amazingly! I couldn’t get off the whole week for BEA but I went for a few days to go to some publishing parties & Book Blogger Con. It was so amazing to be reunited with great friends! It was the type of few days I really needed in the midst of crazy wedding planning. The rest of June was crazy awesome — we got our apartment that’s closer to the city & then I had my bridal shower.

JULY brought CRAZY wedding planning stress (I mean, AHHH ONE MONTH), a nice family reunion & CrabFeast and my bachelorette party!

And then AUGUST rolled around in all it’s glory and I LOST MY JOB a week before the wedding (knew it was coming), I got stressed induced shingles that week BUT I GOT MARRIED TO MY BEST FRIEND AND LOVE OF MY LIFE after dating for 5.5 years! We then went and honeymooned in Mexico!

SEPTEMBER brought meeting JOHN GREEN with Alexa and a ridiculously fun trip to DC for the National Book Fest!

OCTOBER brought all things FALL — we did pumpkin patches and pumpkin cookies and just all things Fall! I celebrated my 27th birthday and dun dun dun…Will got laid off (but got hired back within a month). Luckily the weather was beautiful so we did some hiking on our unemployed days together.

NOVEMBER brought our first Thanksgiving, family and lots of eating. I fell off the working out bandwagon.WOMP WOMP.

And DECEMBER brought our first Christmas, new traditions, and an end to a year that had really life-changing things happen. It sure had some real struggles, sleepless nights and days where all I could do was cry but I’m learning and growing and that’s really all that I can do.

I’d say the word that best sums up 2012 would be CHANGE. And, despite the fact that some of it on the surface seems like bad change, I’ve always personally welcomed change into my life because it means new experiences and that I’m not staying the same. So as hard as I’ve tried to hold on to some things this year, I’m letting them go in 2013 and embracing moving FORWARD — with a new perspective, hopefully a new job and new friends.

8 Favorite Albums That Came Out in 2012

EPS I Loved: Churchill’s Change EP & Atlas Genius Through the Glass EP
Honorable Mentions: Neon Tree’s Picture Show, Imagine Dragon’s Night Vision, Passion Pit’s Gossamer

New shows I started watching this year (some long overdue & some new!) in addition to the shows I’m already watching (Parenthood, 90210, The Vampire Diaries, Grey’s Anatomy etc.)

Revenge: SO GOOD. Will and I devoured this one this year so we could catch up to the current season. I LOVE NOLAN. And I just love how kickass Emily is. And how the plot is so twisty and complicated and DRAMARAMA.

Revolution: This has been one that has grown on me but there are still things about it I don’t LOVE but I can’t drop it because it’s so addictive and I find myself getting sucked in! I am interested to see where it goes from here!

One Tree Hill: SO late on this band wagon but LITERALLY Will and I (on days when we weren’t doing wedding planning) BINGED this series. The earlier seasons where definitely WAYYY better but I still loved it! CHAD MICHAEL MURRAY!

The Walking Dead: Seriously, I would have never thought I would have liked this one much less be OBSESSED with it like I am. ZOMBIES! And I just care so much about some of these characters and the outcome. This show is incredible, brilliantly written & casted and they pull out crazy things like four episodes in to a season that you would expect of a season finale or something.

I am a serious Sephora addict and this year feel like I hit the jackpot in finding some of my all time favorite products! It’s always amazing when you find THAT product that you’ve always been looking for and this year was incredible for me. Bad for the wallet but my face and hair have never been better haha. All links go to Sephora because that’s where I bought them and can vouch for them being a good company to deal with and has an AMAZING return policy or I would have never spent the money on some of this stuff to try it.

1: Alterna Caviar shampoo & conditioner: I have used Pureology (still love them!) for the past 6 years and this is the first time I’ve liked a shampoo enough to take a break from Pureology and I LOVE this stuff. My hair has never felt so great. I also do things like put coconut oil in my hair at night, use split end serum from Pureology, Moroccan oil, heat protector, etc.
2. Boscia Luminizing Black Face Mask: I LOVE this mask but it’s somewhat messy and time consuming to peel off at first. I also make sure I put moisturizer on immediately after because it can dry your face out but I love how my face looks the next day.
3. Benefit Total Moisturizer: I have jumped from moisturizer to moisturizer my whole life. I find one and LIKE it but go through about 2 bottles and then switch to something new. Sometimes I’ll come back to them (Aveeno & Fresh Soy moisturizer) but this one is going to be a fave for a while I think. The ONLY con to it is that there is a scent but I don’t smell it much after it sits on my face for a few minutes.
4. Origins Checks and Balances face wash: Like with my moisturizer, I am constantly switching back and forth! I have a few go-to’s (Fresh soy face wash, Neutrogena naturals) but this is my new fave and it smells amazing. I have combo skin just for reference and I love how my face feels after this and I honestly feel like my face is so much more clear than it used to be!
5. Amazing Concealer: This is one time where the name describes the product PERFECTLY. It’s seriously AMAZING. Just ask Anna, Tara and Jen who have all used it and I believe two of them bought it! I have never found a concealer that works this well and blends so well. I will never buy anything else!
6. Makeup Forever HD foundation: This is the makeup I wore for my wedding and it is incredible. It’s especially great if you are getting pictures taken or making a video or something. I love how my face looks in our wedding pictures and it blends really great. It’s definitely VERY high coverage so it’s not my every day foundation (I have a Tarte one I love) but I love using this for special occasions or going out.
7. Naked 2 Palette: This is like a cult favorite but this was the first year I decided to actually try it and I AM IN LOVE. Pretty much I use it all the time and all my other eyeshadows rarely get used. If I travel light, I only bring this for eyeshadow because I know I can figure out something with it.

I love when I discover new favorite foods or find new snacks to obsess over. These are my new FAVES!

These pumpkin spice cookies.: And they are lowfat! We took them to several dinner parties during the Fall and they were devoured!

Trader Joe’s Roasted Gorgonzola Crackers: I have always loved cheese crackers but these blow Cheez-its out of the water!

Trader Joe’s Dark Chocolate Covered Powerberries: SO YUMMY! I can’t buy them much anymore because I eat them so quickly. I justify it by saying that they are healthy because there is fruit in them haha.

Quinoa — 2012 was definitely the year of quinoa for me. I had never eaten it before!
Trop50 Farmstand Apple (we always have gotten the orange juice but the apple is AMAZING)

Green Smoothie: They can look kind of gross but are quite tasty AND can be super healthy for you.
Greek yogurt — I thought I hated it but now I love it!

Best In Books 2012

1. Best Book You Read In 2012? (You can break it down by genre if you want)

I cheat at my own question every year. SUE ME.

One of my most favorite books, hands down, I read this year was Every Day by David Levithan (a 2012 release). I also want to say Just One Day by Gayle Forman, which comes out January 2013, and needs to be the first thing you read in the new year!! But since I can’t stop there:

Adult fiction: Blackberry Winter by Sarah Jio (2012 release)
Contemporary YA: Looking For Alaska by John Green, The Sky Is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson, Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard

2. Book You Were Excited About & Thought You Were Going To Love More But Didn’t?

Eve & Adam by Michael Grant & Katherine Applegate — I was REALLY excited about this one and I just apparently did not get it. I’d also say The Innocents — though I’m curious to see if book 2 can redeem it considering I saw something promising towards the end.

3. Most surprising (in a good way!) book of 2012?

Tiger Lily by Jodi Lynn Anderson — I just wasn’t expecting this book to be THIS good nor to make me cry. I just didn’t peg this book to give me an emotional response like it did. I also really was surprised by Bunheads by Sophie Flack — I was just curious by it but didn’t expect to really love it like I did.

4. Book you recommended to people most in 2012?

I think there was a lot of me recommending Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard, all things John Green, Every Day by David Levithan and the Under the Never Sky series by Veronica Rossi. I read the first book in that series in the beginning of the year and read Through The Ever Night (comes out early 2013) and I just cannot stop recommending it to dystopian YA lovers!

5. Best series you discovered in 2012?

Under The Never Sky by Veronica Rossi — for sure — especially after reading book 2 — Through The Ever Night. I also FINALLY read Shatter Me (OMG!) and FINALLY FINALLY The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han which WRECKED me at the end — SUCH a good contemp series! LOVED!

6. Favorite new authors you discovered in 2012?

Sara Zarr (finally read my first book by her – Sweethearts), Robin Benway (Audrey, Wait! was SO SO good) and this was the year that I FINALLY read some of John Green’s non-collaborative works and OMG YOU KNOW HE IS MY FAVE!

7. Best book that was out of your comfort zone or was a new genre for you?

I honestly don’t read a ton of fantasy so The Girl of Fire & Thorns by Rae Carson was such a win for me and SO out of my comfort zone but made me feel less nervous about reading fantasy so ANY fantasy recs you may have I would take!

8. Most thrilling, unputdownable book in 2012?

Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi — I read it ruthlessly until I finished at 4am. Also Legend by Marie Lu kept me turning the pages pretty quickly.

9. Book You Read In 2012 That You Are Most Likely To Re-Read Next Year:

Just One Day by Gayle Forman. No doubt. I passed my ARC along but I will be buying this when it comes out & re-reading the crap out of it.

10. Favorite cover of a book you read in 2012?

I FINALLY read this book but I remember always being drawn to this cover and loving it. It’s so simple yet so communicative in light of the story. I know it might be a boring pick but, out of all the books I read the year, this has just always been a favorite. Really enjoyed this book too!

11. Most memorable character in 2012?

A from David Levithan’s Every Day. Easily. And for some reason I couldn’t shake Sam or Riddle from I’ll Be There by Holly Sloan Goldberg or Eva from The Lost Girl by Sangu Mandanna. And can I’m going to just keep cheating and say Roar from Veronica Rossi’s Under The Never Sky series.

12. Most beautifully written book read in 2012?

The Sky is Everywhere by Jandy Nelson — I included a quote in the top quotes question of this survey. This book was just beautiful.

13. Book that had the greatest impact on you in 2012?

Just One Day by Gayle Forman — it really resonated in a deeply personal way. More than I could ever explain in my review but there was just a lot of things in that book that were things I’ve been struggling with in my own life and, to be honest, this book helped me in some of my decisions and made me feel secure in others. I mean, it would have been an incredible book even if I hadn’t been having these same kind of thoughts and struggles but that just made it more impactful for me.

14. Book you can’t believe you waited UNTIL 2012 to finally read?

The Summer I Turned Pretty! My blogging besties have been pushing that one on me for FOREVER.

15. Favorite Passage/Quote From A Book You Read In 2012?

16.Shortest & Longest Book You Read In 2012?

Longest — Nightshade by Andrea Cremer with 452 pages. I was surprised because I really didn’t read any chunky books and honestly I thought that The Raven Boys was bigger for some reason.

Shortest — By The Time You Read This I’ll Be Dead by Julie Ann Peters with 200 pages. Wow! A lot of emotion in not too many pages.

17. Book That Had A Scene In It That Had You Reeling And Dying To Talk To Somebody About It? (a WTF moment, an epic revelation, a steamy kiss, etc. etc.) Be careful of spoilers!

The ending to Pandemonium in the Delirium series!!! I was like WHAT THE WHAT? Also, there was a certain kissing scene in Second Helpings that I was like OH MAMA I need to talk about. ALSO….Just One Day. The end. SO MUCH TO TALK ABOUT BY THE END.

18. Favorite Relationship From A Book You Read In 2012 (be it romantic, friendship, etc).

I loved the relationship between Allyson & Willem in Just One Day — there’s just something about sparks with a complete stranger and the way they learned so much about each other in such an untypical way. I don’t way to say too much. I just loved it and got completely caught up in it. ALSO, Aria & Perry in Under The Never Sky but also in Through The Ever Night I really loved the friendship that really blossomed between Aria & Roar. Oh Roar.

19. Favorite Book You Read in 2012 From An Author You Read Previously

I feel like a broken record but Just One Day by Gayle Forman. I was obsessed every other year with If I Stay & Where She Went and this one completely tops my lists this year.

20. Best Book You Read That You Read Based SOLELY On A Recommendation From Somebody Else:

Either For Darkness Shows The Stars by Diana Peterfreund (recommended to me by Anna) — I received this book for review but really wasn’t all that intrigued by it OR Audrey, Wait! by Robin Benway (recommend to me by Carla) — it just never really got on my radar but Carla insisted!

Book Blogging/Reading Life in 2012 (optional)

1. New favorite book blog you discovered in 2012?

Sooo many amazing bloggers I’ve met this year! BUT hands down — Novel Sounds & Alexa Love Books. Not only are they great bloggers but they’ve become wonderful friends. ALSO Vegan YA Nerds & Hello Chelly! I haven’t gotten to know them as well as the other two ladies but these are two of my newest faves that I found this year.

2. Favorite review that you wrote in 2012?

Either my review of Just One Day by Gayle Forman. (And it’s linked a million times above lol) or Every Day by David Levithan (again, linked a zillion times above). I had the most fun fangirling with my review of Second Helpings by Megan Mccafferty or Shatter Me by Tahereh Mafi. Also still love my review of The Sky Is Everywhere.

3. Best discussion you had on your blog?

I had A TON of really great discussions on the blog this year (which I need to add to my master list of discussions) but one that I remember loving having was during my bookish rant! It was nice to have others share their experience!

4. Most thought-provoking review or discussion you read on somebody else’s blog?

Oh lord. I need to start compiling a list of these to keep throughout the year. ALSO I wasn’t around as much because of the wedding planning so I really can’t think. BUT I’ll tell you my most favorite thing on someone else’s blog! My friend Jen over at Makeshift Bookmark started this series called book blogging woes and even though they are super funny and not serious — they are ALL things that we as bloggers can relate to in some way and be like HAHAHA I do that too!

5. Best event that you participated in (author signings, festivals, virtual events, memes, etc.)?

I have to say that the Simon & Schuster blogger preview cocktail party at BEA this year was so incredibly fun — a mix of pimping up coming books, cocktails, hanging out with AMAZING authors, meeting other bloggers and stuffing our faces because the waiters kept bringing us hor dourves. Also the Breathless Reads tour stop and Dark Days tours in my area were awesome!

6. Best moment of book blogging in 2012?

Finally getting to meet my blogging bff (Jen from Makeshift Bookmark) and then getting to spend the weekend with her, Anna and Tara in Chicago for RT Con. ALSO..meeting John Green!!! OH AND MEETING STEPHANIE PERKINS!!

7. Most Popular Post This Year On Your Blog (whether it be by comments or views)?

Oh lord. Well I had a Hunger Games post (a simple little list I had posted that I had originally made for a few friends who loved THG after I recommended it to them and they wanted more) and it went viral on Pinterest. Like broke my site and I was getting crazy insane traffic. Like 10,000 unique visitors a day for a month. It’s died down from that.

But in terms of actually popular amongst my readers (I’m excluding Top Ten Tuesday’s though many of them got more comments & traffic than these)– WEIRDLY enough — the strangest posts I made were popular. My How Books are Making Me Fit & Productive post was popular and so was this SO RANDOM (like I posted it because I had nothing scheduled and just was kind of excited about it) post about How I combated car sickness. Totally a random post. I thought it would get a few “wooo hoo nice” or “I can’t read in the car either!”.

8. Post You Wished Got A Little More Love?

Hmm can I say all of them? Because who doesn’t want more love! But I would say maybe my Book Inspired Dates post? Or my a post in which (after I gave my list of 10 bookish confession) I gave my confessions as a blogger. I don’t knowww. WHY DO I ASK SUCH HARD QUESTIONS? I might come back to this one!

9. Best bookish discover (book related sites, book stores, etc.)?

10. Did you complete any reading challenges or goals that you had set for yourself at the beginning of this year?

I didn’t really have any goals because I knew I was going to be planning my wedding until August 17th (wooo so glad it’s over) but I’m just really proud of myself for reading as much as I did nonetheless and somehow still keeping the blog going (while sparse at times). I totally failed at reading the HP series..which was about the only goal I had. lol. I DID, however, complete my goal of moving to WP. It wasn’t pain free but it’s so worth it. And it wasn’t THAT bad…minus losing most of my RSS subscribers.

Is it acceptable to have said Harry Potter like on every survey I’ve done?? lol. I need to. I just need to do this. MAKE ME, GUYS.

3. One Thing You Hope To Accomplish Or Do In Your Reading/Blogging In 2013?

I just want to keep on keeping on and challenging myself with reading & blogging and keeping in check with my blogging manifesto & keep learning. I’m happy where I’m at and I love my readers and just have been beyond blessed by the openness and love I feel from this space between my reader and myself. I want to use this year to get back on a schedule that works for me since this year was more sporadic than I would have liked with wedding planning. I’d also like to challenge myself to read genres I never read and ALSO get back to reading more adult fiction.
