Radiance

Radiance by Catherynne M. Valente (Amazon // Goodreads)

Publication Date – October 20, 2015

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:  Honestly? It came across my Goodreads feed and I was like WOW THIS SOUNDS COOL AND LIKE NOTHING I HAVE PERSONALLY EVER READ. I’m all about trying new stuff and an alt history space opera set in a different Hollywood and world sounds prettyyyy cool.

What It’s About:Severin Unck’s father is a famous director of Gothic romances in an alternate 1986 in which talking movies are still a daring innovation due to the patent-hoarding Edison family. Rebelling against her father’s films of passion, intrigue, and spirits from beyond, Severin starts making documentaries, traveling through space and investigating the levitator cults of Neptune and the lawless saloons of Mars. For this is not our solar system, but one drawn from classic science fiction in which all the planets are inhabited and we travel through space on beautiful rockets. Severin is a realist in a fantastic universe. But her latest film, which investigates the disappearance of a diving colony on a watery Venus populated by island-sized alien creatures, will be her last. Though her crew limps home to earth and her story is preserved by the colony’s last survivor, Severin will never return..

The Shattered Court

The Shattered Court by M.J. Scott ( Goodreads // Amazon)
Publication Date- April 2015

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
Rachel’s review sold me!

What It’s About:  “The royal witches of Anglion have bowed to tradition for centuries. If a woman of royal blood manifests powers, she is immediately bound by rites of marriage. She will serve her lord by practicing the tamer magics of the earth—ensuring good harvests and predicting the weather. Any magic more dangerous is forbidden.

Lady Sophia Kendall, thirty-second in line to the throne, is only days away from finding out if she will be blessed—or perhaps cursed—with magic. When a vicious attack by Anglion’s ancient enemies leaves the kingdom in chaos, Sophia is forced to flee the court. Her protector by happenstance is Lieutenant Cameron Mackenzie, a member of the royal guard, raised all his life to be fiercely loyal to the Crown.

Then Sophia’s powers manifest stronger than she ever imagined they would, and Cameron and she are inextricably linked in the process. As a witch unbound by marriage rites, Sophia is not only a threat to the established order of her country, but is also a weapon for those who seek to destroy it. Faced with old secrets and new truths, she must decide if she will fight for her country or succumb to the delicious temptation of power.”

Girl At War cover

Girl At War by Sara Novic (Amazon // Goodreads)
Publication Date – May 2015

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:  I rarely look at my “recommendations” on Goodreads but this one showed up and I was intrigued! Looks like a good coming of age story and interested in the setting (Croatia) and the civil war the character experiences.

What It’s About: Zagreb, summer of 1991. Ten-year-old Ana Jurić is a carefree tomboy who runs the streets of Croatia’s capital with her best friend, Luka, takes care of her baby sister, Rahela, and idolizes her father. But as civil war breaks out across Yugoslavia, soccer games and school lessons are supplanted by sniper fire and air raid drills. When tragedy suddenly strikes, Ana is lost to a world of guerilla warfare and child soldiers; a daring escape plan to America becomes her only chance for survival.

Ten years later Ana is a college student in New York. She’s been hiding her past from her boyfriend, her friends, and most especially herself. Haunted by the events that forever changed her family, she returns alone to Croatia, where she must rediscover the place that was once her home and search for the ghosts of those she’s lost. With generosity, intelligence, and sheer storytelling talent, Sara Nović’s first novel confronts the enduring impact of war, and the enduring bonds of country and friendship.”

You're Never Weird On the INternet

You’re Never Weird On The Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day ( Goodreads // Amazon)

Sword & Verse

Swords & Verse by Kathy MacMillan  (Amazon // Goodreads)
Release Date: January 19, 2016

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
I’ve been craving fantasy more and more and this one looks interesting! Love that language is a huge part of it!

What It’s About: “Raisa was just a child when she was sold into slavery in the kingdom of Qilara. Before she was taken away, her father had been adamant that she learn to read and write. But where she now lives, literacy is a capital offense for all but the nobility. The written language is closely protected, and only the King, Prince, Tutor, and Tutor-in-training are allowed to learn its very highest form. So when she is plucked from her menial labor and selected to replace the last Tutor-in-training, who was executed, Raisa knows that betraying any hint of her past could mean death.

Keeping her secret guarded is hard enough, but the romance that’s been blossoming between her and Prince Mati isn’t helping matters. Then Raisa is approached by the Resistance—an underground rebel army—to help liberate the city’s slaves. She wants to free her people, but that would mean aiding a war against Mati. As Raisa struggles with what to do, she discovers a secret that the Qilarites have been hiding for centuries—one that, if uncovered, could bring the kingdom to its knees.”

Just Visiting

Just Visiting by Dahlia Adler ( Amazon // Goodreads)

Release Date: November 17, 2015

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:
It sounds sooo like a me book! Plus I really enjoyed Dahlia’s debut!!

What It’s About:  “Reagan Forrester wants out—out of her trailer park, out of reach of her freeloading mother, and out of the shadow of the relationship that made her the pariah of Charytan, Kansas.  Victoria Reyes wants in—in to a fashion design program, in to the arms of a cute guy who doesn’t go to Charytan High, and in to a city where she won’t stand out for being Mexican.

One thing the polar-opposite best friends do agree on is that wherever they go, they’re staying together. But when they set off on a series of college visits at the start of their senior year, they quickly see that the future doesn’t look quite like they expected. After two years of near-solitude following the betrayal of the ex-boyfriend who broke her heart, Reagan falls hard and fast for a Battlestar Galactica-loving, brilliant smile-sporting pre-med prospective… only to learn she’s set herself up for heartbreak all over again. Meanwhile, Victoria runs full-speed toward all the things she thinks she wants… only to realize everything she’s looking for might be in the very place they’ve sworn to leave.

As both Reagan and Victoria struggle to learn who they are and what they want in the present, they discover just how much they don’t know about each other’s pasts. And when each learns what the other’s been hiding, they’ll have to decide whether their friendship has a future.”

Are We Out Of The Woods Yet?

If there is one thing you’ve learned about me over the years it’s that I am a very sentimental person and everything is ridiculously significant to me so I reflect a lot about the most random of things.

I can even make going to a Taylor Swift concert an emotional thing. So, yeah, I went to see Taylor Swift yesterday in Philly. It was awesome. As one would expect. I’ll get to the experience but first I’m going to get a little emo on y’all. IS IT A DAY THAT ENDS IN Y?

This was not my first Taylor Swift concert. I saw Taylor Swift in February of 2007 at a small venue called Crocodile Rock near her hometown and about 45 minutes from me. I went with my college roomies on a whim because we all loved her single Tim McGraw and had been listening to her album nonstop. (My Taylor Swift conversion was by force — they were all country fans and I was the pretentious little hipster who was too afraid to admit I liked it when they constantly played it but I so did. I WAS SO ANNOYING IN COLLEGE). Taylor was adorable, talented and sweet. I remember her pulling up a little girl on stage for Stay Beautiful. It was just a great experience and it made me a fan of her even more.

197394_502514855742_812_n

So here we are like 8 years later. EIGHT YEARS HOLY CRAP. A lot has changed in 8 years — for me and clearly for Taylor Swift who is playing to crowds of 50,000 now and is one of the biggest names out there. But there is something ridiculously significant to me as I reflect back on my own journey and that of Taylor’s in these years. I got a little emotional when I bought the tickets. When I first saw her I had just turned 21 a few months before and now I’m getting ready to turn 30 in a few months. MY LIFE WAS SO DIFFERENT.

When I first saw Taylor my mom had passed away just a few months before that in July of 2006. I was so lost and so unsure of myself because of that but also just in general because those early twenties are just a tumultuous time of growing in general. When I saw Taylor last night I’m at a place where things aren’t perfect but I feel like I’m out of the woods — I’ve made it through my 20’s and even though things at almost 30 are not what 21 year old Jamie would have expected them to be but I’m okay with that. I’m confident and more happy with who I am than I’ve ever been. I’m more myself than I’ve ever been and having a BLAST because of it. I’m doing things for ME and not worrying about what people (whose opinions don’t really matter) think. It was a long and tearful journey — some pretty hard friendship breakups and letting things/people go that had been a part of my life for so long, saying no to be able to say yes to the things truly of my heart, some definite comfort zone blasting and a lot of mistakes along the way. It was hard to realize how much of my life I lived for other people in my early 20’s — to make them like me, to have their approval, to fit in, to not rock the boat — all at the sacrifice of my own happiness and the real me. But if there is one lesson I’ve come out of my 20’s with is that life is too short to pretend to like things you don’t and to deny yourself the things you really do because of what people think. I’m quoting myself from this post.

And I can’t help but see some weird parallels between my life in these 8 years and Taylor’s life in these years since I last saw her (okay hers is much more exciting than mine but STILL). I mean, LOOK AT HER RIGHT NOW. She has come into her own so much. She’s owning who she is and what she wants to do. She’s letting herself go in directions that others might question and she’s doing it with CONFIDENCE and SWAG. And she’s just having a whole lot of fun with her life and not letting opinions that don’t matter dictate her life. It certainly hasn’t been easy for her and for every one who loves her she’s got plenty of people who want to knock her down. But she’s doing it. And at the heart of this world dominating Taylor Swift is still that sweet girl I saw sitting on a stool timidly just being so vulnerable with the audience and telling the stories of her heart.

It’s crazy how much can happen in 8 years. It’s humbling. It’s empowering. It’s motivating. It’s a reminder that I CAN GET THROUGH IT. 8 years later and I still miss my mom like crazy but it, and the other extremely difficult things I’ve faced in those years, DID NOT BREAK ME.

So, I don’t know, it might be this weird parallel because of my overly sentimental heart but if a Taylor Swift concert that bookends my incredibly tumultuous 20’s is the thing I needed to reflect and remind myself of how badass I am and how much strength I have inside of me…well then I will take it and run with it as I face my 30’s head on.

So let’s get to the actual concert!

11393037_661707212982_1148997342006788143_n

Some highlights:

– IT WAS SUPER FUN. So much fun to sing and dance and not care about my white girl awkward dancing because there was a lot of that going on. Loved singing to all my faves! She really knows how to put on a good show (though sometimes she did a little too much inspirational talking for my taste before songs but they were probably things the younger crowd needed to hear from someone they look up to!)

–  OH MY GOSH SHE DID THE BEST VERSION OF LOVE STORY. It was like this re-imagined 1989-esque version of it and it was incredible. She recorded it here if you wanna listen:

– We got these cool little bracelets that flashed with different colors while she was singing. After the show was over if you tap them they still light up with different colors!

10401998_661707188032_3181623511290645000_n

– Some awesome special guests: Rachel Platten (literally she sang Fight Song with Taylor which is the only song of hers I know!!) and Mariska Hargitay who I LOVE from Law & Order. (I will say I’m a little jealous that I was not there the night before when Echosmith joined her on stage!

– I loved looking at all the awesome costumes and t-shirts the Swifties were wearing! Some ballerinas and cheerleaders and people who made Instagram polaroids. AND TWO GIRLS DRESSED UP AS STARBUCKS CUPS. It was awesome.

– I loved how even when she’s playing to a crowd of 50,000 she still has that personal touch that makes you feel like she’s playing to a small crowd and how you feel like you really know her. It’s no wonder she’s got some of the most devoted fans ever.

11406857_661707168072_9009585098270088046_n

– I loved how she included her bffs — in between some of the songs there were these cute videos with all of her bffs about what it’s like being friends with Taylor and just about female friendship and empowerment in general.

– HER OUTFITS WERE ON POINT.

– Vance Joy opened for her so I was happy to see him again because Will and I LOVE him (Will was a little jealous I got to see him again) but I will say his stuff is a little slower and less GET PUMPED FOR TAYLOR kind of music.

– Experiencing my first BIG Taylor concert with one of the biggest fans I know, my friend and fab book blogger Katie, who drove from CANADA to PHILLY to see her!

It was SUCH a fun night and I’m so happy that I was able to go — it was my Christmas present from Will! I’m still TOTALLY on a Taylor Swift high right now and I think Will might kill me if I have 1989 on repeat all day.

A Walk Down Memory Lane: The Joy Of A Good Album

Sometimes I get nostalgic so I take A Walk Down Memory Lane — check out previous posts!

So I’m in the process of getting all the crap out of my old room in the house I lived from 8th grade until I got married and one of the most daunting parts of that is figuring out what to do with all my cds (SERIOUSLY WHAT DO I DO WITH THEM ALL?). I have hundreds and hundreds of cds from my childhood through college and I was getting all sorts of nostalgic.

I was thinking about how I haven’t bought a new cd (aside from 1989) in YEARS. I buy off Itunes and I pay for Spotify monthly. Listen, I love these things. Like Spotify? My love for it knows NO BOUNDS. But sorting through my cds made me kind of miss cds in a way but also think about my listening habits.

I mean, here’s the thing. I am obsessed with Spotify. I have playlists upon playlists. I love having access to ANY SONG I WANT AND NOT HAVE TO HAVE A BAJILLION CDS EVERYWHERE. I love not having to buy an album if I don’t want to. Because, let’s be real, back in the day before I could preview songs on the internet, the worst thing in the world was to hear a new song and rush out to buy the album only to hate EVERY OTHER SONG on the album.

But on the other hand? I’m feeling overwhelmed by ALL THE OPTIONS. I’m finding myself having SO much music that I just feel like I can’t even keep track of EVERYTHING I like/get to all those artists/songs I like (kind of similar to my too many book choices thoughts?). I have SO MUCH MUSIC that I can’t even decide what to listen to half the time.

The biggest thing I’ve realized? While I obviously do still listen to albums all the way through, I’m listening to playlists I’ve made A LOT of the time. Picking and choosing songs from various albums. (Sure, I used to make mixtapes/cds a lot but the majority of what I listened to an album all the way through.)

AND THAT’S WONDERFUL. IT IS A WONDERFUL WORLD IN WHICH I CAN LISTEN TO JUST THE SONGS I LOVE. LISTEN TO WHATEVER I WANT. WHATEVER MY MOOD DICTATES. ALWAYS. ON THE GO.

But? (You knew there was a but…)

There is nothing like a well crafted album. I mean, the art is in the start to finish. Not in one or two, ready for radio hits. But it tells a story from beginning to end. It’s complete. Those albums, that even your least favorite song, is pretty great. Putting together an album is a craft. It’s an experience. I can think of so many full albums that I probably know EVERY word to every song. THERE IS JUST SOMETHING ABOUT THAT. And sure, not every album is like that. AT ALL. But today I’m so used to just giving the album a quick preview and picking my favorite songs out and never giving the album another thought or a second listen.  With cds, I mean sure I could skip songs I didn’t like, but most of the time I popped the album in and listened. And SOMETIMES songs would grow on me or I’d see them in a different light after a second or third listen. It was just a full listening experience.

And I’m not even talking about just the LISTENING part of the experience. But oh my god I miss the liner notes. Just ripping open that cd (UGH cd packaging was the most pain in the ass thing though) and pouring over that booklet — looking at the lyrics, any pictures and any other sort of thing included.

I REALIZE THESE MUSINGS SOUND CRAZY. I mean, it’s not even like cds are totally a thing of the past but I’m looking at my own life and ALL my music listening is done through my computer or my phone AND IT IS MAKING ME NOSTALGIC (even though I’m thankful I don’t have to have a bajillion cds to store and I can listen to whatever I want).  And I KNOW I can listen to full albums easily. It’s just…in this pick and choose digital world, I don’t always. And sometimes I feel like less people care about the ART of making an album because of the way listening habits are evolving.

And today’s vagrant musings are brought to you by the letter N (for nostalgia because I’m sippin’ heavy on it lately) and the glass of wine I just consumed. Let’s not even talk about how I just cried my way listening to some music that reminded me of certain college nights with friends. GET AWAY FROM ME, NOSTALGIA.
