5 Quotes To Help You Refocus & Finish the Year Strong

Every time September hits I have this back-to-school nostalgia that overcomes me. September always brought a new school year and I always felt the way I did about it as I did the New Year — fresh & new possibilities and goals and declarations of things I would do differently.

Time for a new  From My Quote Notebook post in which I pluck a random quote from my quote notebook.  So my goal with this? To share a quote from my quote notebook at random (aka whatever quote I’m FEELING for that day) and hopefully introduce you to some new books as I know sometimes I see a quote from a book and it makes me VERY interested in reading it or at least checking it out!

Serpent King quote

The Serpent King by Jeff Zentner: One of the best books I’ve read all year so far!! I rarely hand out full 5 stars but this book elicited it for me. I feel like this quote epitomizes what some of this book is about — among many other things! This book is so so sooo great — small town life and a heartachingly real exploration of that time where you are on the cusp of The Future that everyone has always talked about but has seemed unattainable — coming from 3 characters with very different visions and hopes and realities for the future.

inspirational quote

Falling Into Place by Amy Zhang Oh guyssss. This book wrecked me. EMOTIONAL CHAOS. I know it was a hard one for some people because pretty much every character seems awful and the storytelling is different but this story, the way it was told and beautiful writing hooked me. I just remember sobbing after I read it. The quote I shared encapsulates a lot of the ~theme~ of the book: people being able to change or not change and all that comes with that — the person you expect yourself to be because of how you’ve been as well as how everyone ELSE sees you because of how you’ve lived vs the person you want to be. You meet characters who have become something that they probably would have never imagined themselves being and you would think it would be simple for them to just change and stop being awful human beings but sometimes you don’t realize how deep you are in and when you do change seems impossible. It was such a beautiful novel that really dissected characters slowly but surely and showed the complexity of people and motives etc.

Anyways, I just loved this quote and it’s always a good reminder for me. My story isn’t over so every day there is the possibility for a multitude of changes and detours and second chances.

YAY back for round 3 of my latest series — From My Quote Notebook! Since it’s still new I’ll leave my intro from last week:

I’ve mentioned it before but I have had a quote notebook since about 2008, before I started blogging, just to keep track of good quotes from books. Sometimes other quotes sneak in there that I like but mostly books. A bunch of people wanted to see it and it’s SUPER messy and just really for my viewing because I write sideways and everywhere and it’s a mess. But I thought it could be fun to do it this way to share the contents of my quote notebook!

This week we have:

Cynthia Hand quote

The Last Time We Say Goodbye by Cynthia Hand: One of the most beautiful and gut-wrenching books about grief — more specifically about a girl whose brother killed himself. Her writing is beautiful and the story just captivated me — albeit tore me apart!! If you like emotional contemporary books, get this one!

All-the-light-we-cannot-see-quote

All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr: I read this in the midst of a big reading slump and it was exactly what I needed to read. Historical fiction was always my go-to genre pre-blogging and I just don’t read as much anymore…which is sad but I’ve been craving them more. I loooooved this book so much and this line made me jump off the couch to grab my quote notebook. I like the sentiment of it — not just to SEE but to experience/see/do/take in all the things before it’s too late. Definitely reminds me to be better with my time — not just be busy running around experiencing everything — but remembering every moment counts and I can’t get back the ones I’ve wasted.

From My Quote Notebook { 1 }

I had been tossing this idea around for the past year or so (after having a conversation in my comments on a post where I had been mentioning my quote notebook and how I keep track of quotes from what I read) but I’m super lazy and slow to implement ideas sooooo…it’s only taken me that long to be like OKAY LET’S DO THIS.

First up:

Golden by Jessi Kirby quote inspiring

Golden by Jessi Kirby is one of my favorite contemporary YA books from one of my auto-buy authors. This quote become one of my unofficial mantras for life that I try to think about when I wake up and face a new day. This book was so inspiring in so many ways and featured a great character who always lived life by the rules and doesn’t really like to take chances or go outside of her comfort zone but through the course of the book is pushed to. It’s also got a GREAT mystery thread wherein Parker and her friends find something that could provide answers about two small town legends and golden couple from 10 years ago who died in a tragic accident but their bodies were never found. It’s seriously such a fantastic book and I have SO many quotes that I wrote down from this book in my quote notebook.

Top Ten Inspiring Quotes From Books

Top Ten Tuesday, as  always, is hosted at my other blog — The Broke & the Bookish

This week’s topic: Top Ten Inspiring Quotes From Books

I have a kept a quote notebook since long before I started blogging 5 years ago. My high school graduation I got a new notebook and a card that had a quote on it that really inspired me and I wrote it down. And then I collected quotes that I liked and along the years a lot of the quotes have come from books I’ve read. So this topic was pretty easy for me…except the fact it was SO HARD to pick. So many quotes have inspired and challenged and moved me!

// ONE //Throne of Glass quoteI read this line and I was like FUCK YES. True in the book and true for my life. We’ve all got the ability to rattle the stars if we dared too but too often we are held back our own hangups and fears and such.

//TWO//

even-in-paradise-quoteThe last page or so of this book is so quoteable and beautiful I couldn’t grab my quote notebook fast enough. This is the wish for my life, too.

//THREE//

finnikin-of-the-rock-quoteLOVE THIS. “I choose to drown in hope rather than float into nothing.” YESSSSS FINNIKIN YES.

//FOUR//

quote-golden-jessi-kirby I literally could have made this list JUST by using quotes from Golden by Jessi Kirby. One of my favorites and made me think a lot. When I read this book and this quote I wrote this on a post-it note and put it on my nightstand so that in the morning I’d look at it and adopt it as my mantra for the day. Every day is a fresh start. Every day is a chance to step outside of your comfort zone and experience new things.

//FIVE//

two-boys-kissing-quoteI left out “and deem them so” at the end of the sentence but was too lazy to go back and fix my graphic. But anyways, this quote inspires me to remember that magic is all around us in the moments we make and that I have the power to create magic — I don’t have to wait for it to happen. Also, this book in general, SO MANY DOG EARS.

//SIX//

Just One Day

One of my favorite quotes out of the whole book. (I could have filled this post with Just One Day posts as well as Golden ones like I said above). I tend to underestimate the power and importance of a day. But life is made of days. This quote and what it embodies is something I try to keep in perspective daily.

//SEVEN//

graffiti-moon-art-quote

I loved this quote and even wrote a whole post inspired about it. But it really inspired me as a reviewer. That the way I look at books vs. how YOU look at books really has a lot to do based on our past, our experiences, our values, who we are as a person, etc. I think it made me realize how even MORE special art is because there really isn’t a wrong or a right way to see it.

//EIGHT//

just-one-day-quote4I’ve talked about how this book changed my life and this quote hit on a big thing I was struggling with. I was so frustrated with things not being how I wanted them and yet I wasn’t putting myself in the path of THINGS. I was just doing the same old thing wondering why nothing was happening. The page this quote was on was dogearred and stained with some tears when I thought about this.

//NINE//

mary-oliver-quoteI love Mary Oliver’s poetry. I know everybody knows her for the one wild and precious life line (which is one of my faves) but SO MUCH of her writing is amazing.

//TEN//

wanderlove-quote

This is one of my favorite books and I very much identify with the idea of wanderlove and some of the ideas about travel in this book. But I loved this quote (sorry it’s so long and hard to read..I had to add it) because it really challenged me to look at how I view things as a traveler.

So tell me…what are some inspiring quotes from books that you have taken note of? Have any of my quotes inspired you? Or at least inspired you to check out the book they are from??
