What We Were Liars Is About:
For once I’m not writing my own synopsis because pretty much I want to give not even an inkling more than I knew going into this book:

A beautiful and distinguished family.
A private island.
A brilliant, damaged girl; a passionate, political boy.
A group of four friends—the Liars—whose friendship turns destructive.
A revolution. An accident. A secret.
Lies upon lies.
True love.The truth.

Why You Should Be Saving The Date for We Were Liars by E. Lockhart:

1. We Were Liars is one of the BEST books I’ve read in a LONG time: I’m not the type of person to proclaim every book to be amazing and the best and on and on because I try to reserve that for the books that REALLY mean a lot to me. I want you to believe me when I say THIS IS A BOOK YOU NEED TO READ. Everyone. I don’t care what you read. So please hear me when I say this: this book is beyond amazing, it blew me away and it is one of the BEST BOOKS I’ve read in a long time. I don’t have a rating system on this blog but I’m letting you know if I did this would be easily 5 stars and I’d try to cobble together more stars because it deserves more. I haven’t had a book really wreck me like this one did but I sobbed and I screamed and this is why I love reading…BOOKS LIKE THIS. A truly remarkable story from start to finish. Especially the finish. When asked what kinds of books I liked to read…this meets A LOT of those things that I listed. It’s just brilliant and my words are just paltry little things that can’t do it any justice.

2. The suspense: There’s something that happens and the main character can’t remember it and that’s pretty much all I’m telling you. GO IN BLIND TO THIS ONE. Please. I knew nothing about it and that made this reading experience the absolute best. Don’t look at anything about this book. You just need to know that the underlying suspense there is to this amazing story will consume you. I read this all in one day because I could NOT put it down.

3. The writing: I love how E. Lockhart writes — it’s smart, brilliant, funny at times, beautiful, heartbreaking. It’s memorable. It’s j a Jamie book through and through especially when it comes to the writing.

4. The Liars: I LOVED the Liars. Oh my god I loved them so hard. I loved learning about their friendship and the intricacies of this old money family. I wish I had a childhood crew like the Liars.

5. BECAUSE: You just have to. You do. This book is special. Truly. It’s different. It’s beautiful. It’s remarkable. I don’t want to hype it up too much because EXPECTATIONS but seriously…I cannot even begin to explain this book.

Who Should Save The Date: Everyone. Listen, I rarely make sweeping “EVERYONE MUST READ THIS” but I’m telling you do it. Read We Were Liars by E. Lockhart. If you start reading it and you tell me, “I don’t think this is for me” I’d normally say “eh just put it down…life is too short” but I’m going to tell you not to even think about putting it down. Seriously, pre-order it. I have NEVER said that on this blog ever.

A Sneak Peek: “It tasted like salt and failure. The bright red shame of being unloved soaked the grass in front of our house, the bricks of the path, the steps to the porch. My heart spasmed among the peonies like a trout.”

(this is taken from the advanced copy I received from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review, and could be subject to change)

Be on the lookout for my FULL review closer to the release date where I will flesh out my thoughts a little more!

Have you read this one? Are you excited for it?? Putting it on your TBR list?

About Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

  1. Pre-ordered! I’ve been meano,g to read more e.lockhart books and your reviewed made me excited for this one. Now to wait!

  2. I am dying to read this book. Lockhart is a great author and I wouldn’t miss this book for anything. I am glad you enjoyed it Jamie and cannot wait to read your full review. Although I am worried because I know a lot of people who have read it so far mentioned the ending… and how it had them sobbing.

    • I hope you love it when you read it!!

The ending? I sobbed more because of the whole book. The ending didn’t make me cry…a while before the ending did. But who KNOWS maybe we all are a bunch of liars LYING about this book. 😛 You can’t trust us. Don’t listen to anything you hear about this book except that it’s amazing.

  3. Okay, I’ll read it. Sounds amazing even though I have no clue what it’s about. But that’s a good thing. It’s so refreshing to go into a book blind. Also, my last name is Lockhart so I feel like I have to read this. Lol. I’m such a nerd.

  4. The challenge of the century is for me to go into this book blind. I’m the queen of spoilers. I love reading them, I love finding them, I love reading the last pages before I start the book so yeah it’s going to be hard! I mean even when I don’t want to read spoilers, they kind of just… force themselves on me lol But since this book obviously should be experienced without reading any spoilers, I’ll TRY. ACK. But, I’m just so happy that wow, I have a book to look forward to that has blown you away THAT much.

  5. I am SO EXCITED for this one. I cannot wait to get my hands on it!! Glad you loved iT!

  6. Everybody has been raving about this one and I JUST WANT IT SO BAD. I love E. Lockhart and it’s been forever since she’s had something new out. AHH. JAMIE YOU’RE KILLING ME. I’m definitely reading this as soon as it’s out.

  7. I just received this from the publisher a few days ago! I was so intrigued since the back basically says that if anyone asks you about the ending, JUST LIE.

I am so excited now and cannot wait to read it!

  8. Oh dear. I really need to read ANY E. Lockhart book. SHAME ON ME! Definitely marking this one down. So glad to hear how much you loved it!!!

  9. I have yet to read a book by E. Lockhart(I know, I know!), and for some reason, this one was never on my radar. I saw it being advertised but it just didn’t compel me or anything. But I’ve seen so much positive early buzz from reviewers I really trust like you, so I’ve finally gone in and added it to my TBR!

  10. I’ve only read one other E. Lockhart book, which I loved, so I can’t believe I didn’t have this on my to-read list already! All the vagueness surrounding it and the way everyone is avoiding giving away any spoilers has me super intrigued. I don’t think I would have even thought to pick this up if it hadn’t been for this post, so thanks!

  11. !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
That basically sums up my excitement for this book 🙂
    PS you’re the best.

  12. I want to read it now! Added to my TBR list 😀

  13. You make me want to read this book just this second. Putting it on my TBR list right away!

  14. Okay, I was excited about it, but now I just NEED to get this! *marks all the calendars*

  15. This sounds like EXACTLY the kind of book I’d love to read right now! If only the release date weren’t a million years away! *sobs*

  16. Between you, April and Adam, I am seriously DYING to get a chance to read We Were Liars! It sounds like a wonderful book, honestly, and the elements mentioned in that (very) mysterious synopsis are so gosh darn intriguing!

  17. It’s become so hard for me to go into books blind anymore. I’m never among the vanguard of new books, and I don’t really want to be. I like having a sense of what I’ll think of books before I read them whenever possible. BUT I will try with this one. It sounds almost mystery-like, and they’re far better to read without spoilers. Seriously, this one sounds fantastic and I’m excited to read it. Glad it worked out so well for you!

  18. Ohmygosh I’m freaking out right now because E. Lockhart is just amazing, she’s the co-author of one of my all time faves and I love her Boyfriend List series…. Now hearing about this, and I didn’t even know she had a new book coming out, and I’m going crazy and this comment makes no sense but OMG I need to read this!!

Thank you so much for sharing, I am going to add this to my TBR right now and pine for it to come out!

  19. DEFINITELY PUTTING ON MY TBR LIST! I really love good suspence/mystery and I found hard to find a book that REALLY grab my attention on this gender, it is usually an adult mystery so there is a lack of emotions and the writing style bores me. But woo, a YA beautifully written with heartbroken scenes? Need. It. Now.

  20. Just finished this. In two hours. Heart. Frozen.
