So you guys. Since early 2012 I’ve been working on this post I wanted to do about the differences between myself as a reader before I was a blogger and after I became a blogger because my habits have changed SO MUCH. I kept putting it off because of wedding plans. I wanted to make this cute graphic that was a list but, when I finally started to work on it this year, it was just looking TOO crowded with about 30 different things and overwhelming and not AT ALL what I had in mind. Then I decided…why not make it a series? The more I thought about it — it would lend to a better discussion if I just give you one at a time. I’m kind of glad my original idea didn’t work out because I’m liking this better. Check the end of the post for previous Before & After’s.
I reread books ALL the time. As a child I reread books probably 5-10 times among other quirky reading habits. I read The Giver by Lois Lowry 10 times for sure. As I got in college I wasn’t really reading a ton of new books but was revisiting classics I had read before. I reread without abandon and really enjoyed how different the story felt each time or the new things I would pick up. I also enjoyed spending time with “old friends.”
It’s a rare day in hell that I reread a book which is SAD because I would love to revisit favorites. The most revisiting I do is of my quote notebook or pulling out a book just to reread a passage I know I loved when I’m in a slump. But reread a WHOLE book? My book blogger brain thinks:
It’s not that I DON’T want to reread or don’t find value in rereading. I totally do — if anything I believe rereading is such a crucial part of my reading experience. I think I’ve lost sight of that. But then I look at my shelves of unread books that have accumulated (especially those ones I HAD TO HAVE) and all of the new releases to come or the review books I’ve committed to willingly and I just think BUT WHEN? I WILL FALL BEHIND. I WILL NOT DISCOVER NEW STORIES. And I hate that feeling. I SHOULD reread because I enjoy cozying up with old friends. I don’t know WHY I didn’t make this one of my bookish resolutions for 2013! So here we have it. Right now. I’m making it. I will REREAD 5 books this year. I will. You heard it here!

I’m not a book blogger and I LOVE re-reading books. I always have a huge list of books to be read but there are some books that I keep going back to and reading over and over again! I do try not to re-read too much because there are so many new books to be read though!

I probably haven’t been book-blogging long enough to have this exact problem, but I love revisiting old friends on my book shelf. To the point where in high school the librarians stopped asking me if I was sure I wanted to reborrow that book because they knew my answer would be yes. (I was a HUGE Tamora Pierce fan in high school.) I know what I like and I like what I know. But I also have the whole things where I will be re-reading a book and discover a line or a tiny fact that I either didn’t remember from the last reading, or that simply hadn’t absorbed on the first reading. Especially in books with lots of world building like Harry Potter. I mostly reread if my new books aren’t calling my name, and sometimes it’s just nice to go back and visit old friends too.

Wow, that’s actually a really good question!
I think I have been blogging for a year now, and my blog actually started out as a personal blog. But I kept postponing actually posting things. I just couldn’t find the spirit to keep updating. Until I found out that when I was posting about books, I didn’t have the same problem!
The thing is I used to reread books all the time! But I don’t anymore, and I’m not sure of thats because I started blogging or because I’m busier than before… I do know that I follow a lot of bookblogs etc, so there’s like tons of books I still want to read because other people are really excited about these books… My to be read pile grows every single day and I don’t really have the time to start reading, but when I do I want to finish all of them, so I don’t really have the time to reread older books.
I do write my favourite quotes down in a notebook, with the chapter and page number, so when I want to check those out I just reread a passage. So I do reread books… but when do I reread them? I think that is mostly in the summer. When I have plenty of time to finish my to be read pile and then reread everything I want to reread! and when I reread, most of the times I end up loving a book even more, because I pick up initial things that I haven’t picked up before.
But if that’s because I became a blogger? I have no clue… maybe, because I love writing about books and I can’t really post the same thing twice.
I think my overall conclusion would be that I have no idea… I love everything that involves books 😉

I have never really been a re-reader. There are a few that I have read more than once: Edward Abbey’s “Desert Solitaire,” Jane Austen’s “Pride and Prejudice,” Dr. Suess’s “Oh The Places We’ll Go.”
I keep books that I loved and that I would LIKE to re-read, in case I ever want to or run out of books (HA!).
BTW – I love the video, someone just sent me the remix of that and it had me laughing and dancing!

I’m a blogger and I wish I had time to re-read. But between work, school, life, etc, I feel guilty enough that my TBR pile is crazy big that re-reading books make me feel even worse. Which is silly, but I know it comes back to that anxiety of too many books not enough time.

I used to reread books ALL the time. I would reread and reread and reread. It was so much fun to revisit the books I loved and connect with the characters once more. But ever since I started blogging, I haven’t reread many books. It got to the point where I was CRAVING a reread of one of my favourite books so I forced myself to put down the new release I was reading and pick up Sweet Evil by Wendy Higgins again, one of my favourite novels of 2012. I reread it in a day but it got me out of my reading slump and I fell in love with the story and the characters once again. I’ve been thinking of rereading some other books that I love but haven’t read in a long time, like Vampire Academy or Looking for Alaska. And of course, every year I reread the entire Harry Potter series at least once. It’s tradition. (Obsessed? Who? Me?) This is a great post, Jamie! I’ve been thinking about this topic for a while, actually!

I also reread books all the time.. I don#t even have a clue how often I reread Outlander. The only books I reread after being a blogger was the Fever Series by Karen Marie Moning, but other than this? I just do not have time, which is so sad. But there are so many books coming out constantly which I also want to read so that there is simply no time to reread a book;(

Last year I reread a handful of my favorite books & loved it! It was so nice to go back & revisit moments that made me laugh, or swoon. I think you just need to make the effort & go for it & not feel guilty about it. You have the power to control what you read, so why deprive yourself of only experiencing a favorite story once ya know?

I’ve reread my childhood faves numerous times, but I’ve also wondered if that’s just a characteristic of young readers, like how a toddler might ask to have the same story read to him/her night after night after night, until the reader can practically recite the whole thing from memory.
I am a little sad that I feel like rereading is a waste of time, though. Sometimes, it’s reading new (bad) books that feels like a waste of my time.

I can completely empathise with this situation! I re-read everything before I started my blog and there were so many books I would always go back to. When I started blogging it really opened my eyes to a load of books I didn’t know existed and I loved discovering new books by authors I wasn’t familiar with because and I think it did me some good to break out of old habits. Saying that, recently I’ve really began to miss re-reading so I’ve been going back to old favourites and it feels so good! <3 sure I feel a little bit guilty about the ever growing pile of books I'm yet to read for the first time but I sometimes I need a bit of comfort reading and that's what re-reading is to me.
One thing I really need to start doing is re-reading previous books in a series before the next one comes out! I always forget what happens so I think it would help 🙂

I love to reread books but like you I don’t have a whole lot of time. Every now and again though, I do think “Stuff it. I need a favourite” and I will just set aside the requests because as a blogger you need to keep your happy levels high and what better way than to snuggle up to a friend.
Used to reread about 20 books a year before blogging and so far that’s severely decreased 🙁

I’m bad about re-reading as well, pretty much for the same reasons. I want to discover new, amazing things, and rereading may not allow for that. I have set aside a month this year when I will revisit my old friends though. So we’ll see how that goes. 🙂

I love to re-read! I re-read all of the Delirium books/novellas in February to prepare for Requiem. (Series make me more likely to re-read, since I don’t want to be lost while reading the usually long-anticipated final book!) Plus, I re-read at least a few old favorites (Persuasion!) every year… which includes a more recent favorite (Frankie Landau-Banks!) for the past few years, too.

Actually, I’ve never been much of a re-reader. The only time I usually ever re-read books is if a new book in a series has come out and I feel like I can’t remember anything about the books prior. Then I’ll drag them all out and re-read them so I am more “prepared” for the new book. Other than that? I rarely re-read books, even before blogging. (Off the top of my head I think there are two books I can think that were not series related that I have re-read. That’s it. And they were both favorites that it had been so long since I last read them that I wanted to remember why I loved them so much.)
I’m not quite sure why I don’t ever look to visiting “old friends”. I guess I just feel like there are so many new adventures to go on that I get restless and want new new new. I don’t like the feeling of “oh, I’ve read this before.” Something about it turns me off and makes me unexcited. Huh.

I’m not a book blogger, but I have never, ever reread a book. *fidgets uncomfortably* I keep telling myself that I’m going to reread some of my favorites, I just think my attention span is too short since I know what’s going to happen…! I hereby make it a goal to reread at least ONE book this year. Baby steps.

I don’t reread anymore. I can’t justify the time spent, as SAD as that is. Especially when I buy books (finished copies) to have on my shelves for the very purpose of rereading! I will say that some of my favorites (like absolute, changed me, so amazing favorites) will get reread throughout my years. Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, The Bronze Horseman, The Fault in Our Stars and Something Like Normal. Those I will reread. But others… ? I dunno.
To be honest, this post makes me a little sad face. Why? Cause I think about all those wonderful books I’ve read that don’t earn the absolute favorite distinction that I won’t get to experience again. That’s… depressing.
I think I HAVE to make it a priority to reread. These books aren’t meant to be experienced just once, I don’t think.

I agree with you! I haven’t been blogging very long (only since November), but since I started it, I feel weird about rereading. I’ve been rereading Harry Potter along with the Alohomora podcast, and I’m like 3 shows behind because I feel like I don’t have enough time to read 2 chapters and listen to a 2 hour podcast when I should be finishing new books! I think we both need to stop doing this to ourselves, or we’re going to end up getting angry! lol

Great post and question.. I am not a blogger either – and I can firmly say I had NEVER reread any book until Twilight – those books changed my nature of reading forever. I cannot tell you how many times i’ve read and reread those books – at least once a year recently before the release of a new movie and they have definetly gotten me out of some slumps! Now that i’ve “moved on” from that series I just finished the Delirum series and i have reread the last paragraph of Requiem countless times, would like to reread the other books, but i feel like i have too many unreads at this point.. Then I found Beautiful Disaster – i read this and for some reason it resonated, i’m just finishing it for the second time and I cant wait until Walking Disaster comes out in a few weeks – Sometimes i feel like i just have to get a story out of my system before i’m ready to go on with a new one – strange but true. I did reread some books when I was younger, not as many as an adult (before blogging I wasn’t reading much), but now I haven’t reread any. I do plan to, though. And yes, it’s mostly because of schedules and the amount that I want to read anyway. There are a few favourites I want to read again, because I say they’re favourites but I’ve forgotten so much about them!

For me it was that before I was a book blogger I hardly ever reread books (unless they were like life changing or something) now since I’m a book blogger I suddenly have the urge to read all these books again but I NEVER have time! I have ARCS I need to read or other books I’ve bought that rereading books is practically impossible 🙁

I don’t generally re-read books, but it’s more because of this intense fear I have that they won’t be as good as I remember. *hides* BUT I recently re-read Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver this year, and it was JUST as good, if not better for the second time. I still cried, and it still amazed me – her writing, her characters, and the story she told. So I did it! I should do that more often. 😀
Sadly though, it’s also a “lack of time” thing. I’m about to start Vortex by Julie Cross, and I REALLY want to re-read Tempest first to brush up, but I keep telling myself I don’t have time. But I may just say to heck with it and DO it, because this reading schedule really IS kinda silly, and why should I deprive myself of re-reading a favorite before moving on in the series? SMH, just. Ugh.

To be honest I haven’t reread a book since twilight and I wasn’t a blogger then. Since I have been a blogger I haven’t reread at all and I want all the pretties in my closet. But I do try and read all the buzzed stories , so I can a least have an opinion on the series or not. But with 5 kids…I try to be Present and not always reading a book.

I try to re-read my all time favourite books every year and each book kind of has its season. But I don’t do it nearly as often anymore and it’s been cut back to like two books. I’ll still re-read say Pride and Prejudice and a childhood Christmas book of short stories, but I won’t get around to a yearly reading of the Harry Potter series like I did a few years back. Like everybody else has been saying, there are just so many books out there that I want to read.

Saaame here! I can’t afford to reread books, as much as I want to, because I just don’t have the time. TOO MANY NEW BOOKS. But I agree with you – I miss the old days when I used to reread my favorite books over and over, discover new things about my favorite characters, get lost in my favorite worlds… So I think rereading 5 books is a great idea! I already know I want to reread a few this year and I PRAY that I will find the time to do so! It certainly hasn’t been any time so far. Blahhhh.

I never thought about it until now, but I did the same thing. I would re-read books forever rather than pick up a new one and that changed when I started to blog. In a way, I’m glad that I don’t re-read as much because reading so many new books has broadened my horizons as a reader. My way of re-reading now is to re-read a favorite right before I go to bed. In the last minutes before I turn off the light, I am usually re-reading something I love, just a little bit at a time. Sort of like a security blanket or a lullaby, I guess.

I LOVE LOVE LOVE rereading. I just started my blog this year, and I agree that there’s the looming tower of the TBR pile that chants “Read me! Read me! until I am so huge I will bury you!” Well…at least that’s what mine says to ME.
My reasons for rereading are as follows:
1. I’m forgetful. Which I sometimes love. I can rewatch a movie or reread a book and it’s almost like it’s the first time. With a good book, I can get sucked in again and again.
2. Sometimes it’s comfort or the book is JUST THAT DAMN GOOD. Don’t even ask me how many times I’ve reread the Harry Potter Series (or listened to the audiobooks). Seriously. Siriusly.
3. The last installment of a series is coming and I want to get myself fully immersed into that world before embarking on the last leg of the journey.
When I started my blog, all of two months ago, I promised myself that I wouldn’t get caught up in it. I try to post as often as I can, but if I can’t, or if I don’t feel like it, I won’t. Same goes for my reading habits. I’m a fast reader and often will read ~5 books a week with a full time job taking up at least 12 hours of every day. But if I want to spend time with an old friend that I know will show me a good time, I won’t hesitate. =)

I’ve always been a rereader. My favorite book from childhood is Where the Red Fern Grows, and I’ve read it at least 50 times. (I know that sounds ridiculous. But after I read it the first time, I’m pretty sure I carried it around with me for like 3+ months just rereading it over and over and over…) I read my childhood favorites so often that many of the covers fell off.
I haven’t done as much rereading since starting to blog, but I have done some. I’ve been in a super huge reading slump lately so I haven’t read really anything, but I’ve reread a few. There’s just something perfect about being able to go back and revisit those old favorites.

I say I’ll reread this because I loved it so much, and then there’s a ton of other books I feel like I need to read. It’s ridiculous. While when I was younger, I would reread all the time. I’ve always been a rereader, but since becoming a blogger, my amount of rereading has dropped drastically.
Before blogging, I’d reread pretty frequently – ESPECIALLY when another book in the series was coming out. These days, I tend to revisit favorites only when I’m sick and in need of a time-tested comfort read or if I’m in a slump and looking for something to get me back into the swing of things.

I really love rereading sections of books that I like. I was up until 3 last night rereading my favourite parts of Hold Me Closer, Necromancer. I get like this crazy cravings to reread certain books. I go on a rereading spree almost once a month. Works for me, because usually I reread my favourite passages or chapters, but sometimes I do make time to reread an entire book (usually one by Gordon Korman or Rick Riordan). Other times I feel like I have to reread books because a newer book in the series came out and I don’t remember enough about the previous book(s) to feel comfortable starting the new one. Sometimes I reread previous books just because I want to experience the character’s growth all over again, even though I know the stories backwards and forwards. I guess for me, nothing has changed before and after blogging . . . yet. I’m still a new blogger!

You know, now that I think of it, I rarely re-read books now that I have been blogging. Like you said “ain’t nobody got time for that!” I also used to reread a lot though. I love rereading a book for some many reasons. Like you said, it’s like visiting old friends. But it also let’s me experience emotions again. Often I love to re-read lighter books. It helps me relax and de-stress. I feel like I should make time to re-read, too!!

As you may know, I support re-reading wholeheartedly and probably re-read more than anyone I know right now. That is certainly debatable but I re-read constantly and continuously, and sometimes almost to a fault. Yes, I said almost to a fault.
Over the past few months, my re-reading habits have increased a ton. I find that it just MAKES ME HAPPY. So I do it. I’m always re-reading SOMETHING via audiobook, even if that means I have more than one audiobook going at a time. And I typically have a print copy that I’m re-reading too (either before a sequel comes out or because I just want to or whatever).
I think it is FABULOUS that you are making a resolution and I want to support you in this endeavor! Didn’t you have like a re-reading readalong weekend or something once? I was thinking about that the other day but I may be completely crazy and making that up in my head.

I have just re-read all Harry Potter books. I am a huge re-reader, mostly due to financial circumstances which does not allow me to go out and buy new books all the time but I also love to revisit stories I enjoyed a lot.
Combined now with my blog I notice it gets more difficult if you need reviews for your blog but I am just piling those up so I get time to re-read some old loves. The good thing for now is that most of my re-reads are not on my blog yet so I can still use them for review too 🙂

I used to re-read all the Harry Potter books at least once a year but I have only read them once since starting my blog, that was because I wanted to do something when the last film came out.
Sometimes I o want to do a re-read of old favourites, but then I think of my ever growing TBR pile, and the review requests I have to read, and, like you, I feel I don’t have the time. Most of the time I don’t mind that because yay new books, but just sometimes I’d like to reacquaint myself.

I LOVE re-reading, but don’t do it as often as I want. Blogging didn’t really affect that though. Even before I had even considered the thought of a book blog or knew what one was, I still felt so torn between discovering new stories and rereading old favorites. I know you’ve posted about this before, but sometimes I just get so OVERWHELMED by the vast amount of books that exist in the world and the fact I’ll never be able to read all of them, so that always crosses my mind when I reread a book, like “I could be discovering a NEW story right now!”. But rereading favorites is just so comforting!

Yes blogging definitelly stopped me from re-reading the books, basically because I am always late and there is a pile of ARCs I need to review before the publication date.
It’s sad because I really enjoyed hanging out with ‘old friends’ 🙂 I just recently found one of my favorite series from teen years on a real bargain deal (they are out of publication) and I was so tempted to buy it but gave up because I knew that I will never have the time to re-read 12 book series with 6000+ pages. 🙁

I don’t reread enough, either. I used to, just like you did! But then I started accumulating so many books that I felt like it made more sense to try and make a dent in my tbr pile instead of rereading my favourites. Although, I have been trying to make an effort to reread this year and I think audiobooks are a great way to do it … I can listen in the car and get a book read after a week or so during time I wouldn’t have been reading anyway. It’s a win!

Blogging hasn’t changed how much I reread. I do it just as often, and actually, I like to go back and read my reviews and see how my opinion changes as I read the book over and over. Sometimes I don’t finish a review book by the time I should because I’m rereading an old favorite, but I try not to let that bother me. I’ve gotten burned out before by trying to review too much, so I try to balance things.

There are some books I’d reread just to make out with all over again. You know… like Dimitri from VA. Oh… and Adam from Where She Went. Eeeek… and then there is Four from Divergent. That book is just that good. READ IT. With VA, I just loooved the characters… loved the world… loved the writing…. loved everything about it. I have so many dogeared pages in those books! So books like that, ones I fall for completely I love going back to because I miss them so much. Others though– that are just GREAT books– think Unearthly, The Mortal Instruments, I probably wouldn’t read again, at least not any time soon for the exact reason you said– there are so many stories waiting to be read! so many new characters to meet! so many new authors to discover! With 2 kids and a pretty busy life, my reading time is limited so I like to make it count!

Totally hear you on this, Jamie. I want to reread everything. I don’t have time for that. I will be rereading Memoirs of a Geisha this year because it is my favorite book, but that’s it. I wish I could reread ALL my favorites. Those are the drawbacks of being a blogger. The great thing though is all the NEW books we get to discover. There is a silver lining to everything, I think. Oh, and by the way, I LOVE this feature. I always have a comment to leave and that’s how I know you’re doing it RIGHT! <3

I love to re-read! I’ve been doing it since I first really got into reading in 5th grade. There are some books that I’ve read over 10 times (Jane Eyre, Pride & Prejudice) and they still never get old. I even picked up a book about re-reading (which I haven’t actually read yet – oops) to see what it said about why people do it.
Since becoming a blogger, I don’t re-read as often as I used to, but I still do it enough that I fall behind on my new books. Just recently, instead of reading my brand new books (The Goddess Inheritance, Scarlet, Under the Never Sky), I re-read all my Georgette Heyer novels (except one – I seem to have misplaced it somehow). I think the biggest difference since becoming a blogger is that I feel the need to make time for re-reading, or I feel “guilty” re-reading, when I have so many new books to be read.

Last year, I barely did any re-reading. Honestly, I always find myself gravitating towards the newer books that come my way (whether new releases or just new to me), and that usually leaves no time for re-reads. Blogging has certainly contributed to that gravitation, but I also think that it’s also because I’m so far from my library at home. All the books I used to re-read are miles away in the Philippines, so that really changes things for me.
HOWEVER. I have managed to re-read three books this year – Incarnate, Something Borrowed and Something Blue. And I think I’m going to be re-reading a couple of my favorite series too, so I guess there’s that 🙂

I used to reread books all the time, especially the HP books. Now I only reread before movies in order to refresh my memory. It’s not that I don’t want to reread, but like you said, there isn’t the time.

My reading life has changed drastically since having kids. My time to read physical books has dropped so much that I barely get 30 minutes here or there. Before kids, I would reread the previous book of a series (Kim Harrison, Kelley Armstrong, LKH), or even the entire series before the next one came out. Now, I’m doing good just to sort of keep up. I just finished Scarlet without rereading Cinder… I’m listening to Through the Ever Night, without rereading Never Sky… and it actually makes me a little sad to have forgotten so much of these books that I raved to everyone about. I’d planned to not only reread The Calling before next Tues, but all of Darkest Powers and Darkness Rising. That’s not going to happen. *sigh*

I actually feel more inclined to reread since I started blogging than I ever did before. I always felt like most of the magic had already been taken out of the book because I’d read it and knew what would happen. After starting my blog and seeing how many people enjoy rereads, I’ve thought about them a little more and definitely like to take part. However, I still find myself going “But the other books won’t read themselves! What if I miss out on something?!

This is a thing about blogging that I really DON’T like. Or maybe it has got more to do with how I have handled blogging (ahem, reading books and writing reviews at the very last minute – NOT THE BEST SITUATION). But either way, I used to re-read books all the time. I can’t even count the number of times I have read Harry Potter, The Hunger Games, my Dutch childhood favorites, Looking for Alaska, The Perks… But now that I’m a blogger, I rarely re-read a book, mostly because I just DON’T HAVE THE TIME. I feel like I should constantly be keeping up with my reading schedule (hahaha schedule) instead of re-reading THG for the millionth time. Hmm…
