In the Fall I am obsessed with picking reads that just have that FALL feeling (here are some of my recs) and since the first day of Fall was yesterday I’ve already started to pick what books I’m going to read to get me in the ~mood~ for Fall — especially because here in Philly it was like 80 yesterday (I’m so not complaining but man I want to bust out my boots and flannel so hard) so I need ALL the help I can get to think of Fall because my brain is still in summer mode.
One of the books FOR SURE on my list, like on my nightstand, is Stalking Jack the Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco which just came out this week! I mean, JACK THE RIPPER + Victorian era + a highborn lady who is super into forensics trying to track him down. I’ve heard rave reviews from fellow book friends and I’m super excited to dive into it!
I was especially intrigued after I heard Kerri talk about her inspiration and why she chose Jack the Ripper to write a book about because I am also super intrigued by unsolved crimes and theories (my particular crack of choice is theories about the two Princes in the Tower but I have a feeling I’m going to be super into Jack the Ripper for a while).
“Unsolved crimes and history have intrigued me since I was a teen. I was fascinated by the Ripper case in particular because of the mystery that still surrounds it. There are so many theories and suspects, and as a writer it’s a wonderfully blank canvas for creating your own backstory. Who was Jack? Where did he come from? What were the circumstances leading up to that Autumn of Terror? I think the most interesting villains are ones that fit into that questionable gray area—the place where we understand their motivation, even if we’re horrified by it.
I chose Jack because I wanted this story to focus on a young woman who turned the tables on him. When I researched case details, I immediately thought about the forensic team behind the scenes. It was one of the first times in history forensics were applied to a case with gusto, so I imagined how interesting it’d be if a teenage girl was involved with stopping this notorious killer of women. From there it evolved into Audrey Rose’s story of how her world and Jack’s converge.”

In the story collection, Slasher Girls and Monster Boys, the short story In the Forest Dark And Deep is a wonderful, creepy story. It is a retelling of Alice in Wonderland that will keep you up at night. It has a fall setting with a harrowing tea party in the woods. Definitely the stuff of nightmares, but I LOVE it!

I have been reading such great things about this book. I recently read How To Hang A Witch – OMG what a perfect fall/Halloween book. I could sing its praises ALL DAY. The Mara Dyer series is another good one (I’ve only read the first, but going to read the rest soon!) as well as A Madness So Discreet.

I don’t usually try to pair up my reading with the seasons, but The Secret History by Donna Tartt has this great New England-y, fall vibe and I’ve actually been meaning to reread it now that the weather is turning. But other than that I don’t know if I could come up with any others!

Jamie you’re going to love this book! I read it during the summer because I couldn’t wait til the Fall. A good Fall book for me is anything scary or ones that take place at the beginning of a new school year.
