11 Literary Mysteries & Thrillers For Readers Of Literary Fiction

October 19, 2023 - Updated November 10, 2023 // Leave a Comment

I was talking to a book club friend who told me that she dreaded when we picked mysteries and thrillers because she was pretty sure the genre wasn’t for her.

She’s more of a literary fiction reader and a self-described “picky reader” who doesn’t typically want cheap & quick thrills, escapism and has really struggled with most of the popular and “it” thrillers and mysteries.

She said she liked the idea of a good, smart mystery but had trouble finding what she was looking for. I mean, you know I like a challenge and I LOVE the genre, so that’s what I set out to give her.

I set out to create an awesome reading list for her full of some smart thrillers and mysteries that lean more on the literary fiction side that would have a lot of what she appreciates and less of what she doesn’t — what is sometimes called a literary mystery or a literary thriller.

I’m not sure how I feel about the label of “literary mystery/thriller” honestly. The definition and the line is blurry to me but I just went off vibes of what mysteries and thrillers a literary fiction reader would like.

Some of them are more firmly mysteries/thrillers and others are literary fiction with a decent side of mystery or psychological suspense.

She hasn’t finished the list I gave her but so far some of the picks have been winning her over which I’m excited about!

Best Literary Mysteries & Literary Thrillers For 2023

For fans of: Mare of Easttown, family dramas, sister stories, books thoughtfully dealing with the opioid crisis

This one was a hit for my friend after I recommended it and that makes me so happy as y’all know I couldn’t stop talking about it in 2020 and was one of the best books I read that year!

Part literary family drama, part suspenseful police procedural — this book blew me away and was so much more than I imagined it to be. It will hit that sweet spot even if you don’t normally like the whole police procedural/detective thing (I don’t normally).

At its heart it is a gritty and emotional family story woven into the suspense of a police officer worrying about and trying to find her estranged sister, who is homeless and struggles with addiction, when a string of murders happens targeting girls that could be her sister.

For fans of: really smart and thought-provoking books about our obsession with true crime/serial killers, books that are more slow burn and character driven

Literary fiction meets true crime/suspense — the most compelling book I read last year!

It deals with a serial killer who is on death row, unraveling his story mostly by women in his orbit, and expores many compelling themes — namely the deft exploration of the true crime and serial killers frenzy in pop culture and society.

I thought this one was interesting/unique and also would appeal to readers who are looking for outstanding writing with their more suspenseful book.

For fans of: character driven books, dark and gritty books, Long Bright River, something suspenseful and at times thrilling

This literary suspense/crime thriller is so underrated! It’s dark & gritty, character driven and the writing helps elevate the literary fiction feeling of this book.

Set in the 1990’s, it drops you right into the world of these dancers at a gentleman’s club. Two of the dancers have been involved in an accident after leaving the club one night — one is dead at the scene and the other is missing.

We follow the murder investigation/missing person case, and this was really well done, through the eyes of many POVS: the other dancers, suspects, detectives, club patrons and the killer themselves.

It really had me on the edge of my seat and I really think this is a great & thought-provoking book club book as it tackles a lot really important things (like violence against women) in such a masterful way.

book cover for the plot

The Plot by Jean Hanff Korelitz

For fans of: books about books/writers, more literary thriller than mystery

I really loved this one — a great thriller if you are looking for more of a literary thriller!

The main character is named Jacob and he’s a writer who is in a bit of a dry spell after a successful book years ago and is also a creative writing professor.

He has this super cocky student who announces he has the absolute perfect plot and, when Jacob keeps a bit of a peak of it, he really knows it’s a winner of an idea. Sadly, that student dies after the residency leaving that idea to die with him. But does it HAVE to? SHOULD it when it’s such a winner of an idea?

The story fast forwards about four years where our main character has another smash hit book and things are going great — until he gets some threatening messages with a big accusation that he plagiarized the plot for his latest book and they are going to out this literary transgression of his.

I loved the plot of it all and also the interesting and thought-provoking exploration of intellectual property and more!

Book cover for The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle

The 7 1/2 Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton

For fans of: intricate puzzles and high concept murder mysteries, genre-bending stories

Ooh this high concept literary thriller & murder mystery is one of a kind, complex and just such an intricate puzzle you won’t be able to put down. Plus the prose is fantastic for people looking for fantastic writing in this genre in addition to great plots.

Stay with me on the plot even if you don’t normally do time loop type stuff, okay??

Evelyn Hardcastle is murdered at 11pm the night of her parents’ gala and now, until he can figure out who the murderer is by inhabiting the body of different party guests, Aiden is stuck reliving this same day over and over again.

For fans looking for: a more character-driven & literary crime/detective mysteries

I checked out this one after reading Kate Atkinson’s Life After Life (amazing but so different from this) and this was a nice surprise as I don’t really love PI/detective books as much as I love other types in the genre!

It’s about a PI named Jackson Brodie who is taking on three seemingly unrelated cold cases involving families. The writing is a step above most of what I’ve read in the drama and characters are so compelling that you almost feel like it’s a fast-paced thriller instead of a more slow burn mystery.

Book cover for When The Stars Go Dark

When The Stars Go Dark by Paula McLain

For fans looking for: a truly gorgeously written mystery/crime novel

I have loved a couple historical fiction novels from this author but this is, hands down, my favorite books from her.

From the onset it looks like you are just reading a book about a missing persons detective who, after suffering a personal tragedy, who gets involved in a missing persons case of a local teen girl in the small town she tried to flee to in grief — a case that feels weirdly similar to an unsolved murder from the past.

And, yes, that is the suspenseful mystery that propels you forward in this book but it’s about so much more — the one thing that really was explored profoundly for me was in regards to trauma.

Well written in every way, if you are looking for that standout literary mystery/crime novel — this is it. It is quite dark so just be well aware of that in case that’s not the type of book you are looking for.

Book cover for Miracle Cree

Miracle Creek by Angie Kim

For fans of: family sagas with compelling mysteries; Liane Moriarty or Celeste Ng

This literary courtroom drama and mystery is, I cannot say it enough, a must-read even if the courtroom drama thing is not normally your thing.

I shied away from this book for so long for that reason but this book is a gem that readers of literary fiction looking for a mystery/crime element!

It’s thought-provoking and thoughtful as it explores a lot of different things woven into the mystery — immigrant life, parenting (particularly of special needs kids), care-giving, grief and more.

It’s hard to describe this one without giving too much away but you’ll get dropped into the murder trial of a little boy who dies in a fire (purposely set) when he was in a hyperbaric oxygen chamber which was used (controversially) as treatment for for people with disabilities and other conditions.

As the trial plays out, secrets and more come to light. Just so perfectly plotted and definitely was a tear-jerker for me (and by tear-jerker I mean I wept like a baby).

Makes a smart, discussion-worthy book club book that readers won’t be able to put down.

As an aside, her latest novel (Happiness Falls) appears to fall under the literary mystery vein. Can’t wait to read it!

Book cover for In The Woods by Tana French

In The Woods by Tana French

Find On Amazon
Find on Bookshop.org

For fans of: a well-written series to dive into

Tana French is an outstanding writer and takes on a more literary style of writing for this police procedural/murder mystery series. Her characters have so much more depth than most I’ve read — like a careful examination and character study of each one but also of human nature in general.

The murders and the characters both propel you forward pretty evenly which is not normally something I experience — I needed answers just as much as I couldn’t wait to unravel these characters more.

This first book tackles an old unsolved murder that personally affected one of the main detectives (he survived a traumatic ordeal but can’t remember much) and in the present time a murder presents itself in the same woods in a eerily similar manner that he must solve in order to hopefully have answers about both the case at hand and the one he is still trying to piece together from his childhood.

Book cover for If We Were Villains

If We Were Villains by M.L. Rio

For fans of: dark academia & The Secret History

Now I read this one so many years after The Secret History (which is one of my favorites!) so I didn’t feel too frustrated in how similar these two books felt but I know some people did.

The writing and the structure of the book is so good in how it is set up like a Shakespearean tragedy.

It’s about a retiring Detective who wants one last chance to find out the truth about what happened 10 years ago with a man (Oliver Marks) he helped put in jail 10 years ago for a murder and is now being released.

Oliver agrees and retells everything that led to him being put in jail for this murder — a tale about a group of young Shakespearean actors at an elite academy whose roles on stage blur and bleed into their real life dynamics as the exclusive collective of actors turns into something much more sinister that ends in death.

As of writing this post, it’s currently on Kindle Unlimited so check that out here if you subscribe to that.

For fans of: small town crime/murder mystery stories

One of my absolute favorite books from 2021 — had such a visceral emotional reaction to it too!

Part literary crime drama and coming of age story, it’s about a crime that happened 30 years ago and has reverberated all those years later especially into the life of a 13 year old self-proclaimed outlaw who has had to grow up too soon because of her unfit mother and having to take care of her brother.

The crime has also really affected the life of the now chief of police who has a complicated relationship with a man being released from jail as he was the one who turned his friend in for that crime.

He’s tried to look out for the kids, as a friend of the family, and now he’s trying to help get his friend back on his feet after his release from jail.

And then another crime happen making the newly released man become the prime suspect and has 13 year old Duchess out for revenge.

At the time of writing this, it’s currently on Kindle Unlimited so check it out here!

What are your favorite literary mystery books or favorite literary thrillers? Would love more recommendations!

Decided to go with a most anticipated book of 2022 for me from an author who has written books I’ve really enjoyed.

I am about halfway through and cruising along because I NEED to figure out if Joseph is the worst or what really is going on here in this story that starts with 3 women being stood up by the same guy on Valentine’s Day. Truly felt like there were zero things more joyful than the warm sun on my face after colder, dreary days and remembering how much I love the feel of reading a mass market paperback. It’s probably a very specific little joy of mine and I definitely reveled in it today.⁣

With all the joy I’m getting out of this reread it makes me wonder why I don’t prioritize rereading like I used to before I started blogging 10 years ago.⁣

In my head I just want to experience all the new stories and try to make a dent in my TBR but I forget, until I do it, the genuine pleasure in revisiting old companions and how it’s a different side of reading one can experience — the nostalgia, the person I’ve become since reading the book and the way I approach a book already knowing what happens. Well the general sense of what happens because my memory is 💩!⁣

Anyways that’s what I’m up to currently. Trying to finish this up so I can pack my books for a short trip I’m going on later this week. My first ✈️ since 2019!⁣

Will and I FINALLY started Ted Lasso this weekend. It is a damn delight!! For all the hype and praise, it has overdelivered for me which is kind of shocking because normally hype is scary. I told Will that I feel like all the praise hasn’t even come close to how much I could love it. We are only 7 episodes in so no spoilers!⁣

I’m kinda mad we sat on starting it for so long but at the same time I think the timing is right to help me see my way out of this February funk I have found myself in the past couple weeks.⁣

Like for real. She wrote a tweet in 2015 that she was taking a few weeks off and then.... no tweets, no new books. Radio silence.

I hope she’s okay, for real, and that she knows I obsessively stalk Goodreads/Twitter/the internet to make sure I haven’t missed new book news from her at least twice a year. 🥺

Have you read any of these? Anyone else hyped for these adaptations.

Either way, after loving Jennifer E. Smith's YA books for years, it's been a real treat to also read her debut picture book with Riley (we loved!!) as well as her adult debut out in 3 weeks!⁣
⁣
⁣So let me tell you about that adult debut — The Unsinkable Great James!!

This one just was the perfect warm-hearted read for a cold and gloomy January.

A perfect setting to escape into (Alaska), a tender-hearted meet cute and a poignant look at the shared grieving experience of those left behind.

I was initially drawn, like I always am, to the daughter losing a mother storyline and an exploration of that grief but I was so taken by the father/daughter relationship between two people who were left untethered by losing the person who held their family together.

Greta and her father don't see eye-to-eye on basically anything when they are thrown together on this Alaskan cruise, a trip Greta's father and mother were supposed to take, and you can feel the tension of their long-standing tumultuous and fractured relationship -- a relationship that feels like its hanging in a balance and could not recover.

The two are both hurting so much from this loss and it took my breath away at times in how true it rang to be in your own grief bubble and feeling like the loss is yours and yours alone while forgetting about the others shouldering their own piece of this loss. I loved watching them very slowly SEE one another.

I can't say enough good things about this one -- great setting, Greta's music, the meet-cute, the messy and imperfect nature of family and love. Definitely recommend!⁣
I was on a hot reading streak and now for the past I was on a hot reading streak and now for the past few days I get all cozy in bed to read at night and am asleep by 4 pages in. Will got a kick out of waking up to me basically spooning my kindle. Ebbs and flows, y’all.⁣
⁣
Let’s do a little reading update with an edition of Last, Current & Next.⁣
⁣
Last - The Girl With the Louding Voice: Adunni is by far one of the most memorable voices I’ve read in a book in a very long time. Her hope and resilience in the face of some awful situations kept me turning the pages and rooting for her. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally read it. Highly recommend!⁣
⁣
Now - Deep in Providence (thank you @fiercereads ): I’m about halfway through after I carved out some time to read early this morning and I’m enjoying this story of grief, love and magic. I’m nervous about these girls trying to resurrect their dead friend though! When I put it down today I was getting a little creeped by some things happening.⁣
⁣
Next - The Kiss of Deception: I’m rereading the first book in this YA fantasy series because it’s been forever and I really wanna finish the trilogy. I’ve been really wanting to go through series I’ve left unfinished for years (not for lack of interest but because I suck at juggling all the series I start) so this is one of them. I remember loving it so I’m excited to dive in and binge.

Whatcha reading? Have you read any of these? Anyone else on the struggle train with reading at night right now?
Braved the downpour to get my library holds. I hop Braved the downpour to get my library holds. I hope they are worth it! Please tell me they are!⁣
⁣
This is also, before I get to the stack, an appreciation post for my tiny library and wonderful librarians.⁣
⁣
They normally open at 9am during the week —except Fridays. Did I remember that? Nope. So I was I was SO proud of Riley and I for getting our butts in gear to be for around opening time to drop off a stack and get my new ones.⁣
⁣
And alas, I go to open the door and it’s locked. Now I’m holding Riley’s hand, two tote bags full of books, an umbrella that I’m trying to keep over the both of us, mind you. I’m thoroughly confused until it hits me that it’s Friday.⁣
⁣
So I’m like, welp, guess we are just dropping off in the bin so I try to grab my books out and put them in one-handed while juggling the umbrella and less than enthused Riley.⁣
⁣
Mercifully the door opens and our children’s librarian takes pity on us and lets us in to drop off and pick up the holds.⁣
⁣
Is this what being a VIP as a celebrity feels like?? Sure feels like it to me 😆 for real though, it pays to be a regular and have a cute kid in tow who is being pelted with rain.⁣
⁣
Anyways excited about this stack but especially Wahala, Daughter of the Moon Goddess and How High We Go In The Dark the most.⁣
⁣
Also have been meaning to snag The World Gives Way after @jordys.book.club recommendation!⁣
⁣
Have you read any of these? Any that you think were definitely worth the rain-soaked journey for??⁣
⁣
Alright now I’m off to curl up and read on this rainy, dreary day which is really what I think a day like this is meant for.

But y’all Black Cake is so good!! I’m almost halfway through and I know it’s A Choice to declare it one of the best books I’ve read all year but I’m feeling bold based on how it’s going.⁣
⁣
I love a good family story (especially one with a family secret!) and this is top notch. The writing is 👌🏻 and I know I’m going to be screaming when the pieces come together!⁣
⁣
In other news, I’m 65% of the way through The Dry by Jane Harper and I’m enjoying it so much that I ended up staying on the treadmill twice this weekend after my allotted time was over just so I could keep listening.⁣
⁣
Will and I FINALLY started Ted Lasso this weekend. It is a damn delight!! For all the hype and praise, it has overdelivered for me which is kind of shocking because normally hype is scary. I told Will that I feel like all the praise hasn’t even come close to how much I could love it. We are only 7 episodes in so no spoilers!⁣
⁣
I’m kinda mad we sat on starting it for so long but at the same time I think the timing is right to help me see my way out of this February funk I have found myself in the past couple weeks.⁣
⁣
Anyways, hope everyone is having a good weekend! Have you read Black Cake or The Dry? Where are my Ted Lasso fans at? I’m happy to join your ranks! Also please tell me your fave character bc I am finding it impossible to pick this far!
No but seriously every year I contemplate organizi No but seriously every year I contemplate organizing a search party for one Katjay Millay who wrote one beautiful and amazing book and then...vanished.

Is there any author who you’ve been waiting forever for a new release from??

I’d also like to add YA author Sarah Ockler to this list! Last release was 2015 😭😭
Ahhh some of my absolute OG young adult faves are Ahhh some of my absolute OG young adult faves are becoming movies/tv shows soon! And one of them is out TODAY!⁣

The Sky is Everywhere — it’s out today on AppleTV+ and I can’t wait to sob my brains out. One of my absolute most favorite books ever by one of my all time favorite authors. It’s gorgeous and heartbreaking in its poignant depiction of grief, first love and healing — all woven together in Jandy’s signature gorgeous, lyrical writing.⁣
⁣
Along For The Ride (out April 22) — one of a handful upcoming @sdessen books being adapted in the near future and I can’t wait! These books are so near and dear to my heart.⁣
⁣
No release dates yet for The Summer I Turned Pretty tv series (the ultimate coming of age summertime story!) or The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight (the cutest meet cute of all meet cutes all set in 24 hours) but I am HYPED and have all my fingers crossed for 2022 🤞🤞

Have you read any of these? Anyone else hyped for these adaptations.

Also, for the past few years, I’ve kept a running list of books becoming movies/tv shows for the year. Head to my bio to check out the list! I try to update it weekly and keep on top of it all but life ya know 😆 but I try!
Is this a book club? I think we just started a boo Is this a book club? I think we just started a book club. Or maybe just a @jenniferesmith appreciation club?? (partner @randomhouse )⁣
