This week’s topic: Top Ten Freebie
This week is a freebie and as per usual (I always schedule the freebie over at TBTB for before BEA for this reason) I will be doing my top ten books I hope to bring home with me from BEA this year.
If you aren’t familiar, BEA is the Book Expo of America. It’s a big ol’ industry event –teachers, librarians, book sellers, publishers, bloggers, reviewers — and there are author signings and you are able to get galleys of books that are typically Fall/Winter releases. It’s book nerd heaven, really. If you aren’t an “industry” person but think this sounds awesome there is 2 days of Book Con after it which is open to the public.
Truthwitch by Susan Dennard: THIS IS LIKE MY #1. If I get this it will be a successful BEA trip. I love Susan and I love her Something Strange & Deadly trilogy so I cannot wait for this one.
Passenger by Alexandra Bracken: Another one of the 3 top priority books (the one below is the other). TIME TRAVEL WITH PIRATES. CAN I GET A HELL YEAH.
Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo: New series from Leigh (set in the Grisha world) that looks awesome! Game of Thrones meets Ocean’s Eleven!
Soundless by Richelle Mead: I still have not read the Vampire Academy series outside of the first one. I KNOW I KNOW. But I’m super excited about this — fantasy + Chinese folklore.
Illuminae by Amie Kaufman + Jay Kristoff: High stakes science fiction set in the future!
Never Always Sometimes by Adi Alsaid: I loved Adi’s debut Let’s Get Lost so I cannot wait for a new one from him!
Another Day by David Levithan: I LOVED Every Day and this is a companion to this that I’m SO excited for!!
More Happy Than Not by Adam Silvera: Love Adam and I’ve heard so much praise for this one!
Rules for Stealing the Stars by Corey Ann Haydu: I really don’t ever read Middle Grade but I will so I can read another book of Corey’s. Plus it sounds wonderful and THAT COVER THO.
A Thousand Nights by E.K. Johnston: 1001 Nights retelling!

I’m sure all of us BEA-goers are MIGHTY obnoxious in the month leading up to BEA and even worse as we are one week out. I AM SORRY 🙂 I just wish EVERYBODY could be there!

I can’t believe BEA is nearly approaching. It’s like THE party of the year and the buzz is always exciting (and sad us for internationals. One day!). I had no idea of the books that are going to be at BEA and a lot of these I haven’t heard of. I used to be so in the loop, ha! Looking forward to More Happy Than Not and am hoping Another Day is a success. I LOVED Every Day and although I can’t see how a companion will fit in, I’m hoping it’ s worthy and good. Happy BEA-ing! Hope you have a blast!

YAS you need to come someday so we can FINALLY meet. Though I’m not sure I’m going next year as it’s in Chicago instead of NYC which means a flight vs. a 90 minute train ride for me haha.
And YES I’m sooo curious about this companion too! It’s Rhiannon’s story so I’m SO intrigued!

OMG YES CASSI WE NEED TO SEE EACH OTHER FOR MORE THAN LAST TIME. That is the one thing that I HATE about BEA is how you see people but sometimes you are like hustling to get to the other side of the floor for a signing. I’m not going to lie I think about those encounters long after the conference ends and think about how I must have seemed like an ass or brushed someone off. I think that’s always my biggest tip to BEA newbs…don’t take it super personally if it SEEMS like someone brushes you off because half the time you are so overwhelmed and on a mission that you are like OH HEY HI AHHH BYE.
This year we shall have a proper chat!!

AH I remember that first year excitement/extreme feelings of “OMG WHAT DID I GET MYSELF INTO.” This will be year #5 so at this point I’m like YEAH I GOT THIS (mostly). I am here if you need tips or anything!! Hopefully we will bump into each other! I mean, not like I won’t see you at the library but YOU KNOW….a place where I don’t have to call you Miss Laura haha.

Wow, the only one of these I have even heard of yet is A Thousand Nights. I’ve requested it from NetGalley, but I’m not holding out much hope of getting approved. I will have to check out the other books! The Richelle Mead looks very different from anything she’s done so far, and the cover is lovely.

I have some that didn’t make this list but were SO CLOSE and also there are probs some out there that I don’t know about bc I have been so lazy about looking lol. And besides Corey’s list mine has zero Harper books which I know are big ones for lots of people because I tend to get a lot of those in the mail so I just calm myself and wait (WHICH IS HARD SOMETIMES). Can’t wait to check your list out.

I’m so worried I won’t be on the floor much (gotta race all over town for meetings with editors each day), so I’m hoping we don’t just run into each other at Jenny’s party. Fun evening events or dinners or fun-times impromptu gatherings would be great too! The whole bookish experience.

Oooooo! So many good books on your list, Jamie! Six of Crows is one of my top MUST HAVE books, as well as Truthwitch, Passenger, & Never Always Sometimes! (Which, by the way, I didn’t even connect to the author of Let’s Get Lost, which has been on my TBR for ages!) Other top picks: Girl Waits With Gun, Serafina & The Black Cloak, Isabelle Day Refuses to Die of a Broken Heart, and Circus Mirandus!
(You’re probably going to have to give me whatever tips and tricks you have to not like panic and fall over the second I step through the doors. I currently have no concept for how to achieve this.)

If I were going, top priorit would be Andrew Smith’s STAND-OFF. Aaaaahhh, I just want this sequel SO BAD!!! I also like Another Day since I, too, absolutely LOVE Every Day. More Happy Than Not I’ve already read and it’s a strong debut! And thank you for putting Truthwitch on my radar! I seem to be getting into books about witches/wizards lately. Gaaaah. All these talks about BEA is killing me! Oh, I’d also be eyeing Patrick Ness’s latest book and Fans of the Impossible Life if I were to come.

I haven’t ever been to the BEA even though I live in NY, I just don’t like huge crowds. I hope I can go next year though, good luck with your book haul 🙂
