Top Ten Halloween Costumes Inspired By Books I’ve Read

October 29, 2013 - Updated May 7, 2019 // 42 Comments

I already shared with you some books that were great to read during Halloween and I’m not a huge cover person so I decided to mix it up this week and do Top Ten Halloween Costumes Inspired By Books I’ve Read. Most of these are made from pieces you could already have in your closet and are easy costumes to put together at the last minute.

Fighter-pilot-costume-code-name-verity

WW2 Pilot Costume Inspiration
WW2 Pilot Costume Inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring a flight jacket

Forever 21 flight jacket / Forever 21 black jeans / Military boots / Black hat / H&M scarve, $21 / Aviator sunglasses / Code Name Verity: Elizabeth Wein: 9781423152880: Amazon.com: Books

Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein: This book is one of my all time favorites. Despite the amazing story itself, I loved learning about how important female pilots were in the war. It was really inspiring and these woman were kickass. This look would be easy to put together with a bomber jacket, aviator inspired hat, scarf and some sort of goggles. Totally wearable pieces on a normal day!

Vixen by Jillian Larkin flapper costume

Flapper Costume Inspiration
Flapper Costume Inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring platform pumps

Marc Jacobs platform pumps / Charlotte Russe hair band headband / Flapper Black Bob Wig deluxe Costume Wigs / Studded Fringe Flapper Dress / Long Satin Gloves with Snaps – Costume Accessories – Leg Avenue… / Amazon.com: ‘Great Gatsby’ Inspired 32″ Inch Faux Pearl Tassel Flapper… / Vixen (The Flappers): Jillian Larkin: 9780385740357: Amazon.com: Books / Deluxe Large Black 72 Costume Accessory Feather Boa [Apparel]

Vixen by Jillian Larkin: I love this series and it totally satiated my obsession with the 1920’s and flappers. The flapper fashion is so fun and there are SO many different options you could do with dresses, head pieces, necklaces, etc. Just please don’t wear stilettos — they weren’t invented yet and you had best be doing some Gatsby inspired dancing in this outfit. Go the distance and get a bob wig too!

Ballerina-costume-bunheads-inspired
Ballerina costume inspiration
Ballerina costume inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring flat shoes

Chocolate and lavender multi-layered reversible tulle skirt tutu… / TOPSHOP Satin and Mesh Body / Zara flat shoes / Amazon.com: Bunheads eBook: Sophie Flack: Kindle Store / Amazon.com: SODIAL(TM) BLACK BUN HAIR FORMER DONUT DOUGHNUT SHAPER… / Capezio Women’s Ultra Soft Transition Tight

Bunheads by Sophie Flack: I really liked this book — a look into the world of highly competitive ballet. I’ve always been jealous of graceful ballerinas and the close I’ll ever come to being one is at Halloween. Easy peasy costume to put together. Perfect time to do that sock bun you’ve always wanted to try!

Cinder-inspired-costume
Cyborg Mechanic costume inspiration
Cyborg Mechanic costume inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring mid calf boots

Mid calf boots / Plus Size Ms Party Mechanic Costume, Plus Size Sexy Mechanic Costume / Robot Womens Costume Size Standard / Cinder (Lunar Chronicles): Marissa Meyer: 0971486812640: Amazon.com:…

Cinder by Marissa Meyer: So this one is the more literal inspired costume based on the book. Cinder is a cyborg and she’s a mechanic. I went the already made costume route with this one and would wear the cyborg jumpsuit underneath the mechanic outfit. I went with a sexy mechanic outfit because I wanted to show off the cyborg oufit. Went with badass boots because Cinder is a badass. This would be so fun to wear and would definitely put you in a position to make people read Cinder when they ask about your costume.

fractured fairytale Cinderella costume

Cyborg Cinderella costume inspiration
Cyborg Cinderella costume inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring white flats

Silk stocking / Kartell white flat / Dents white glove, $29 / Tiara crown / Womens Disney Classic Cinderella Costume / Robot Womens Costume Size Standard

This is my second interpretation because I just couldn’t stop thinking about the idea of the Disney Cinderella, the one we think of, and a cyborg. I couldn’t decide if I’d like the whole cyborg jumpsuit under this dress or if those really cute cyborg leggings from Etsy would look better. The daintiness of Cinderella vs. the cyborg would be such a cool concept — especially if you could do facial makeup to let some of the cyborg peek out.

ringmaster-costume-Water-For-Elephants

Ringmaster Costume inspiration
Ringmaster Costume inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring fishnet stockings

Pierre Balmain silk shirt / Mango long sleeve jacket, $65 / French Connection vegan leather shorts / Forever 21 fishnet stocking / Sam Edelman suede boots / Water for Elephants: A Novel: Sara Gruen: 9781565124998: Amazon.com:… / Century Novelty Plastic Black Cane

Water For Elephants by Sara Gruen: I actually think I might do this one next year because I love it so much! There are pre-made cute ringmaster costumes if you don’t want to find the pieces yourself (which I like to do because I can wear most of them again).
Equestrian halloween costume

Equestrian Costume Inspiration
Equestrian Costume Inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring preppy pants

Graftobian beauty product / MARELLA Yellow jacket, $325 / Ralph Lauren Blue Label preppy pants / Merona riding boots / Lanvin Equestrian Cap / Genuine Leather Riding Crop Whip / The Scorpio Races: Maggie Stiefvater: 9780545224918: Amazon.com: Books

The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater: Puck is a badass equestrian to ride these killer horses and to be the only girl to do it. I loved the setting and the concept for this book (plus the writing is amazing) and I thought it would be fun to honor Puck with an equestrian costume. If you want to go even further, add some blood to your costume since you ARE riding killer horses and it’s not uncommon to get bitten if not killed.

** Number 8 was deleted as a good friend let me know she thought it was borderline cultural appropriation. So sorry for not thinking through that one & I will definitely be more careful in the future**

DJ-punk-rock-costume
Punk Rock Ballerina DJ costume inspiration
Punk Rock Ballerina DJ costume inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring Capezio

Beaded belt / Bracelet bangle / Preen crop top, $595 / Capezio activewear skirt / Lace stocking / Truth or Dare black stiletto / Crosley Cruiser Turntable Assorted Colors / BEATS by DR.DRE Headphone

This Song Will Save Your Life by Leila Sales: Now this is 100% inspire by Elise herself from the book rather than a more general costume idea. I’m sure there are many ways to put together a DJ costume but I went specifically from two favorite parts from this book — when Elise and Vicky went shopping and when Elise first puts her outfit on for the night and realizes how badass she looks for her first real night of DJing. My inspiration: the rhinestone pumps Vicky finds and the dress she wears the first night (“After Vicky approved a pair of lace leggings, I tried on a fluffy pleated pink dress that looked like it belonged to Madonna circa 1987….”It was short, with a tight bodice and a tutu-like skirt. I put on my new bangles, too.” And then my favorite line: “Tonight I didn’t want to look like everyone else. Tonight I wanted to look like how I felt on the inside: Elise Dembowski, DJ.” Then the line when she sees a picture of herself from that night solidified the look — “The dress that Vicky helped me buy makes me look like a punk rock ballerina.”

60s-halloween-costume
Vintage look 60's costume inspiration
Vintage look 60’s costume inspiration by itsahitinsweden featuring wide rings

Mixed print dress / Charlotte Russe high heel stiletto / House of Harlow 1960 earrings / House of Harlow 1960 wide ring / House of Harlow 1960 sunglasses / Going Vintage: Lindsey Leavitt: 9781599907871: Amazon.com: Books

Going Vintage by Lindsey Leavitt: Really I could have done anything with this one! The main character draws inspiration from the early 1960’s so I did, too. There are SO many trends from the 60’s I could have looked at but I just decided to go with a patterned shift dress and of course some Jackie O sunglasses.

So tell me…which of these costumes would you rock? How would you tweak any of these costumes? Which books can you think of that would inspire an awesome costume? Have you read any of these books? ALSO, what are you being for Halloween this year??

About Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

This is adorable! I especially love the This Song Will Save Your Life and Going Vintage looks, though I have to say, that robot girl costume alone seems horrifying to wear! Could you imagine walking around in a metallic bodysuit like that? No way. But paired with that mechanic’s dress and OMG it’s perfect for Cinder!

I’m loving all these costume posts I’ve been seeing. I have one of my own posting later this week 🙂

Oooh, I love what you did with this list! I’m trying to ignore most TTT lists today because freaky covers scare me, haha. I would definitely want to be a punk rock ballerina! Or a flapper. Or a ringmaster. Also, apparently I dress like a WWII pilot in real life, lol. I kind of wish we celebrated Halloween right now 😉

I’m going as a Shadowhunter this year, but we’ll see what happens next year! I may take some inspiration from these looks! 😀

I’m dying a little everytime I think of it. Too bad I’m not doing Halloween this year 🙁 I have most of the clothes for the Code Name Verity costume. Booooooo.

LOVE THIS! Also, I am totally buying the tutu from Bunheads, the boots from Cinder (version 1) and the tights from This Song Will Save Your Life and wearing them all together and it will be glorious. Not sure what kind of a costume that would be, also I will probably rock that outside of Halloween.

I love this! So many cool ideas! I especially love the Cinder interpretations. I think I like the Cinderella one better with those leggings. That would be awesome and definitely a good way to push Cinder on new people. 🙂 I also love the punk ballerina one. I haven’t read This Song Will Save Your Life yet, but I’ve heard great things about it. Unfortunately I don’t get to dress up this year. My husband and I are moving to Virginia this week. We leave on Friday morning so no Halloween parties for me. 🙁 I might do the Cinder one next year though because I really love that idea!

What a great idea for a list and some totally amazing costumes – OK, hands up now, I am probably going to use this for inspiration next time I have a costume party to go to! To my mind, a Halloween costume has to be scary, but it’s fun to mix it up with cute, so I might go as Zombie Alice from Through the Zombie Glass and accessorize with a cracked hand mirror…

Your geisha comment/disclaimer made me giggle — Halloween is one of the worst holidays for cultural stereotypes ;). Just yesterday, I was walking at the park and overheard a couple of teens discussing costumes. One teen said that she hated gypsies because they are too sparkly. My husband’s half gypsy, so it just made me laugh. She’s probably Team Edward anyways, who is the SPARKLIEST. 😉

I would definitely wear most of these (or all of them if I could manage it). Bonus story: my sister went as a ringmaster for Halloween — and it looked almost exactly like your costume for Water for Elephants!

My holy grail historical author came through for me again. I can’t express how much I cared for and was pulled into the lives of these women living in a boardinghouse in DC during the McCarthy era just as much as I was racing to find out what happened in this house. The tension mounted as we got to what actually happened?? Masterful. Truly. #historicalfiction #bookrec #bookrecommendation #historicalfictionbooks @williammorrowbooks

Book shopping is great but I can’t express how incredible building community is and indie bookshops do just that. I always wanted my own version of Cheers and, while not a bar where everybody knows my name, CBW was that place for me for almost a decade when I built community by going to YA book events there and moderating events. And while I am not able to get there as often as I was before I became a mom and we moved further away, It’s been so special to be able to share this beloved space with Riley.

These indie bookshops are so vital to our communities and I know everyone’s situation is different so this isn’t to shame but That Website can’t replace what can be created in these book spaces. Shop local when you are able! #indiebookshop #bookshop #bookshopping #independentbookstore
Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technic Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technically ATMOSPHERE but I feel like between my stories and my dedicated post to it, I’d rather talk about the book I read before it but didn’t update y’all on.

The Trouble With Anna — I enjoyed this delightful little historical romance about a heroine who is carving out her independence only to find out, when her grandfather dies, that he tied her inheritance/future to marrying her best friend’s brother — a not-so-happy surprise for both of them. I could understand why they both had some guardness/walls up and I enjoyed watching them slowly start to lower them.

Mayhem and the Mortal - I’m not too far into this romantic fantasy but it is one of my most anticipated that came out last month and I’m excited to dig in more.

Hamnet — I know, I know. For April I decided not to make a traditional TBR list of books I wanted to read but instead give myself some prompts to guide my reading (bc I’m overwhelmed with all my choices at hand) without feeling rigid. One of the prompts was to read a book I HAD TO BUY but is still unread. So going to finally get to it. Have you read this one or watched the movie?

What are you currently reading?
I had been waiting for the perfect time to read th I had been waiting for the perfect time to read this one after Random House sent me a finished copy as TJR is a longtime auto-buy author. I found myself caught up in all the space joy and wonder and feeling quite parasocial about the Artemis crew...I decided now was the time.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

I hadn’t really known what it was about but I didn’t really need to given its TJR & the fact it was 1980s NASA & astronauts.

But this book was about love to me - romantic love, platonic love, familial love, love for something bigger than yourself, love for the person you are & are becoming, love in the face of obstacles, love for what lights you up.

Having been invested in real life astronauts & their journey lately really made this book even more vivid to me — seeing the bonds of the crew so deeply, feeling the fragility that exists while they are doing this wondrous & crazy thing that often still boggles my mind that we can do.

And, hardest to put into words, that feeling of awe in the expansive nature & capabilities of love & the universe that I felt when a husband named a crater after his late wife which doubly helped me understand how Joan & Vanessa felt looking back at earth.

It made me sob & feel everything about being a human so deeply basically from that Frances/Joan phone call at 86% of the way through until the final words. Like could not breathe.

*might be a tiny bit spoilery so beware:

I think the way she wrote this was so impactful bc we start out knowing something bad happens &it’s not even that far when we know that some of them def won’t make it back & some are alive in peril.

I was like “oof” when *it* happens early on. But each and every chapter where we learn more about these ppl & their relationships felt agonizing & I was retroactively grieving for them more deeply every turn of the page.

The hurt and grief just compounds from a moment that was sad from the jump to something that had dug in deep to me.

To know what happens right before this mission makes the mission control bits even more excruciating. Makes the peril a character is in hit even harder than just “oh that must be scary!”.

I loved it. I needed it bad.
The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being m The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being my reading whims, quirks and troubles.

Interesting things:

1. January started out rough. I only read 1 physical book and leaned very heavy into audiobooks only. At first it was distressing that my brain -thanks to current events and their effect on my mind - couldn’t work out how to sit down and read with my eyeballs but I was like…let’s just roll with it and wait for it to pass. So I waited and enjoyed a ton of audiobooks.

2. I don’t think I’ve ever read so many thrillers and mysteries in a quarter. It’s a genre I love but I’m normally quite more balanced. However, it’s what I was craving and what my brain was tolerating so…I just went with it.

3. I have always been a reader led by my moods (both how I feel reading wise and personally). This quarter was FERAL. Like the most feral mood reading ever. I couldn’t even categorize it. I’d decide on one book enthusiastically and suddenly I was like…absolutely not that.

4. I read way less fantasy than normal which was WEIRD but I felt like I also wasn’t surprised given my brain space.

5. I really started to resent people even more who said “it’s a book account stop talking about politics etc”. Babe, I’m a human who gives a shit but ALSO this has and always been an account of MY reading life. And my reading life was profoundly affected by the things that were going on in this country. Like they have been before - whether it’s been current events or things like having a kid, being depressed, slumps, etc.

6. I return to the fact that, for me, I am happiest when I pay attention to my reading whims. The end of the month I had a very specific reading mood (wanted time travel element but not a heavy time travel book) and I decided to pick up A Rip Through Time at the end of the month and I’m now halfway through book 4. Having the best time ever!!!

Anyways, tell me how your reading life was in Q1! Fave books? Biggest surprises??

Being someone who reads based on their ever shifti Being someone who reads based on their ever shifting reading moods (sometimes very feral) makes library holds and tbrs very hard. It’s the worst when 5 weeks ago I would have gobbled the library hold up but now when the hold comes in I’m like…I think not. #readersofinstagram #readerproblems #librarylife #librarybooks #moodreader
I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first try when trying to satisfy a super specific reading mood - Kelley Armstrong’s A Rip Through Time definitely nailed what I wanted. Time travel but didn’t really want too time travely…just more of a vibe or catalyst for some fun. If you love a good mystery, some time travel shenanigans and a great cast of characters, I highly recommend this book. #bookrec #bookrecommendation #bookreview #mysterybooks #historicalmystery #kelleyarmstrong
🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸 🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸

Beyond excited for a new Kate Clayborn, Kasie west, rainbow Rowell, Jenn Bennett and Beth O’Leary - I’ve enjoyed these authors in the past.

My historical loving heart is most excited for The Duke and How To Fake It In Society.

I love an emotional romance so The Art of Loving You is high on my list plus I’ve heard great things about this author.

I’m intrigued by Fast Lane especially since it’s being adapted for a tv series. I’m seeing comparisons to Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus series which I did love!

More about Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

A book recommendation for all my historical fictio A book recommendation for all my historical fiction readers - The Briar Club by Kate Quinn.
Made a fun family day out of Independent Bookstore Made a fun family day out of Independent Bookstore Day and hit up new faves @maveybooks and what used to be my second home when I lived closer @childrensbookworld which was so nice to be back home 🥹🥹
