Monthly Rewind: September 2018

October 4, 2018 - Updated May 7, 2019 // 16 Comments

Happy Fall, y’all! It hasn’t felt much like Fall — Summer is still camping out here in Pennsylvania. A few Fall days here and there but definitely still on the warm side here. I’ve been LOVING doing Fall things with Riley  — last year she was an itty bitty baby and it’s fun to watch her to explore things.

5 Things About My Life This Month

1.  We went to Rochester for a week: Will had training for a week in Rochester, NY so we decided Riley and I would go with. It was her first time in a hotel and she LOVED hotel life — a little Eloise. We did a lot of exploring solo and, while it was challenging, it was really fun. My favorite thing was the Strong Museum of Play — it was SO AWESOME. Highly rec. I also got to see my little sister who lives up there so that was really nice.

2. We went to a Fall Festival — Last year we to the same one at a small local farm but Riley was only a few months old so we went to the same one this year and it was SO much more fun. I just love watching her discover things — she is smitten with pumpkins lol! Loving all the Fall fun we are going to have!

3. I started doing some social media freelancing: I went out on a scary limb and I’m currently doing freelance social media for a local business and I just got another client to help with Instagram strategy and teaching the client how to use it fully to build their brand. I’m really excited! I did social media for work and obviously with blogging and I’m excited to do some work while I stay at home with Riley.

4. We went to a few new breweries in the area: Lots of brewery hopping this month both at home and while we were on vacation.

5. I started using my new library : My library card had expired and then we moved so I finally got around to renewing it and using my new library. It’s a lot smaller than I’m used to (thank god for interloan library system) and there isn’t as much offered compared to my old ones but I’ve really enjoyed the storytime we started going to in September and I have found all the librarians to be super nice and helpful.

Books I Read This Month

I only read 4 books this month — really busy month!

1. Gilead by Marilynn Robinson: I hated this book. I know it’s hailed as a masterpiece or whatever but BLAH. I was so bored and should have quit but I thought maybe it would click with me considering everyone says it is so wonderful. Some of my favorite books are slower books so that wasn’t entirely off-putting to me….but it just bored me to tears. I didn’t really enjoy it.

2. The Darkest Mind by Alexandra Bracken: Finally started this series. I FLEW through this book!

3. Never Fade by Alexandra Bracken: Continued on with the series! Also flew through this one! Exactly what I needed right now.

4. Next Year In Havana by Chanel Cleeton: I LOVED THIS BOOK SO MUCH. Such a good family story with a vivid setting of Cuba — during the Revolution as well as present day after Fidel died. So excited that one of the other characters will have a book about them coming out next year!!

3 New Obsessions This Month

1. My new joggers from Old Navy: They were having a 50% off sale on their athletic wear and I am all about that athleisure life right now while I chase around a toddler and these were my fave out of what I got!! They are SOOOOOO comfy and fit me great! I also got these leggings and I am LOVING the little mesh details plus just a couple pairs of basic leggings.

2. Trello: I’ve been getting my life together with Trello. I still love Evernote but I’m still playing with what I want to use each for.

3. Mindset work: Y’all I have been working on my mindset lately. This seems like a weird “obsession” to list but I have been going hard on my mindset and changing it lately because I’ve been having a hard season.

3 Things I’m Looking Forward To Next Month

 1. My birthday: I don’t know what we are going to do but I know a date night is going to happen.
2. My older sister getting married: Excited to go up and see family and watch her get married!
3. My first book club in my new town: I asked in a mom group for my area if there were any book clubs and lo and behold everyone was like “no but if you create one I’d go!” sooooo I did and our first meeting is in October. I’m nervous as HELLLLL. But excited. I need friends in our new area PLUS I miss having a book club!  Hopefully I will find someone to connect with at least one person!

Yay for you starting your own book club! I didn’t join a book club until I moved to my current home a year ago, and it has been the BEST thing for me! (I also can relate to the moving-to-a-smaller-library problem—I never realized how much I took living by bigger libraries for granted! Luckily for me, my card for my old one hasn’t expired and I still live close enough to go occasionally, so that’s how I get a lot of my books, ha ha.)

That’s awesome that you’ve been doing some social media freelancing—what a great at-home gig!

EEEE I’m so excited! I was in THREE book clubs before Riley was born and I miss it so much. I need some sort of social outlet.

And oh man — I’ve had such a hard time with my new library. I just miss all the awesomeness of my old one. Just even with the programs they offer for kids. It’s still a nice little small town library but not what I’m used to.

I’m SO nervous having all sorts of “what if nobody likes me???” feelings already. Check out Forever Young Adult…they have book clubs on their site. That’s how I created my first one. Maybe they will have an existing one in your city!

Interlibrary loan is the best! NYPL has spoiled me, I always think our local library is too small, and it’s so great to have access to more books than would fit in the local branch.

I love the idea of starting a book club because it would be so nice to talk to people in person about books, but then I think I would just eventually quit once I had to start, you know, going outside and interacting with people.

Do you have an electric instapot? I have always had an intense fear of pressure cookers (I think my mother’s fear of them stayed with me), so renaming them a cute name like “instapot” didn’t help me. Ha ha. If you do I’m curious how you like it. 🍜

I am so happy you like the Darkest Minds books! 📚

A tradition I started with my son in the fall when he was around three was Sebastian’s Stone Soup. We read the book and talked about putting different things in soup. The next time we went grocery shopping I had him pick out veggies and pasta to put in the soup. He loved it and ate some veggies he would never have eaten by themselves on a plate. He liked that we could make soup taste different with different ingredients, so I started making it with him once a week all through fall and winter. He would get super excited in the fall when it started getting chilly out and the first Stone Soup of the season was on the horizon. It’s still the only way to get him to eat carrots at 26 years old. Ha ha. When he got older (around six) we started looking up the nutrition of the different soup ingredients, thats when we also started adding things like barley and lentils, so it is also a teaching tool.

One of my favorite recipes right now is the Chicken Marsala Meatballs from Smitten Kitchen Every Day. Also they have a Butternut Squash and Caramelized Onion Galette which is really good, but I’ve mostly made it for special occasions because it takes a while. But, everything takes me a while. And Chili! There’s a good recipe in Melissa Clark’s book Dinner, which I really like. Lots of great recipes in that book, actually – several takes on roast chicken that are super delish. Oh! Especially one that’s called something like Quick Roasted Chicken with mustard and something-or-other. That was super good and pretty quick and easy. Man, I love food….

Book shopping is great but I can’t express how incredible building community is and indie bookshops do just that. I always wanted my own version of Cheers and, while not a bar where everybody knows my name, CBW was that place for me for almost a decade when I built community by going to YA book events there and moderating events. And while I am not able to get there as often as I was before I became a mom and we moved further away, It’s been so special to be able to share this beloved space with Riley.

Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technic Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technically ATMOSPHERE but I feel like between my stories and my dedicated post to it, I’d rather talk about the book I read before it but didn’t update y’all on.

The Trouble With Anna — I enjoyed this delightful little historical romance about a heroine who is carving out her independence only to find out, when her grandfather dies, that he tied her inheritance/future to marrying her best friend’s brother — a not-so-happy surprise for both of them. I could understand why they both had some guardness/walls up and I enjoyed watching them slowly start to lower them.

Mayhem and the Mortal - I’m not too far into this romantic fantasy but it is one of my most anticipated that came out last month and I’m excited to dig in more.

Hamnet — I know, I know. For April I decided not to make a traditional TBR list of books I wanted to read but instead give myself some prompts to guide my reading (bc I’m overwhelmed with all my choices at hand) without feeling rigid. One of the prompts was to read a book I HAD TO BUY but is still unread. So going to finally get to it. Have you read this one or watched the movie?

What are you currently reading?
I had been waiting for the perfect time to read th I had been waiting for the perfect time to read this one after Random House sent me a finished copy as TJR is a longtime auto-buy author. I found myself caught up in all the space joy and wonder and feeling quite parasocial about the Artemis crew...I decided now was the time.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

I hadn’t really known what it was about but I didn’t really need to given its TJR & the fact it was 1980s NASA & astronauts.

But this book was about love to me - romantic love, platonic love, familial love, love for something bigger than yourself, love for the person you are & are becoming, love in the face of obstacles, love for what lights you up.

Having been invested in real life astronauts & their journey lately really made this book even more vivid to me — seeing the bonds of the crew so deeply, feeling the fragility that exists while they are doing this wondrous & crazy thing that often still boggles my mind that we can do.

And, hardest to put into words, that feeling of awe in the expansive nature & capabilities of love & the universe that I felt when a husband named a crater after his late wife which doubly helped me understand how Joan & Vanessa felt looking back at earth.

It made me sob & feel everything about being a human so deeply basically from that Frances/Joan phone call at 86% of the way through until the final words. Like could not breathe.

*might be a tiny bit spoilery so beware:

I think the way she wrote this was so impactful bc we start out knowing something bad happens &it’s not even that far when we know that some of them def won’t make it back & some are alive in peril.

I was like “oof” when *it* happens early on. But each and every chapter where we learn more about these ppl & their relationships felt agonizing & I was retroactively grieving for them more deeply every turn of the page.

The hurt and grief just compounds from a moment that was sad from the jump to something that had dug in deep to me.

To know what happens right before this mission makes the mission control bits even more excruciating. Makes the peril a character is in hit even harder than just “oh that must be scary!”.

I loved it. I needed it bad.
The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being m The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being my reading whims, quirks and troubles.

Interesting things:

1. January started out rough. I only read 1 physical book and leaned very heavy into audiobooks only. At first it was distressing that my brain -thanks to current events and their effect on my mind - couldn’t work out how to sit down and read with my eyeballs but I was like…let’s just roll with it and wait for it to pass. So I waited and enjoyed a ton of audiobooks.

2. I don’t think I’ve ever read so many thrillers and mysteries in a quarter. It’s a genre I love but I’m normally quite more balanced. However, it’s what I was craving and what my brain was tolerating so…I just went with it.

3. I have always been a reader led by my moods (both how I feel reading wise and personally). This quarter was FERAL. Like the most feral mood reading ever. I couldn’t even categorize it. I’d decide on one book enthusiastically and suddenly I was like…absolutely not that.

4. I read way less fantasy than normal which was WEIRD but I felt like I also wasn’t surprised given my brain space.

5. I really started to resent people even more who said “it’s a book account stop talking about politics etc”. Babe, I’m a human who gives a shit but ALSO this has and always been an account of MY reading life. And my reading life was profoundly affected by the things that were going on in this country. Like they have been before - whether it’s been current events or things like having a kid, being depressed, slumps, etc.

6. I return to the fact that, for me, I am happiest when I pay attention to my reading whims. The end of the month I had a very specific reading mood (wanted time travel element but not a heavy time travel book) and I decided to pick up A Rip Through Time at the end of the month and I’m now halfway through book 4. Having the best time ever!!!

Anyways, tell me how your reading life was in Q1! Fave books? Biggest surprises??
New historical fiction books on my radar for April New historical fiction books on my radar for April and I feel like there is quite a bit of variety. Any of these on your TBR? #historicalfictionbooks #historicalfiction #newbookrelease #newbookreleases
Being someone who reads based on their ever shifti Being someone who reads based on their ever shifting reading moods (sometimes very feral) makes library holds and tbrs very hard. It’s the worst when 5 weeks ago I would have gobbled the library hold up but now when the hold comes in I’m like…I think not. #readersofinstagram #readerproblems #librarylife #librarybooks #moodreader
I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first try when trying to satisfy a super specific reading mood - Kelley Armstrong’s A Rip Through Time definitely nailed what I wanted. Time travel but didn’t really want too time travely…just more of a vibe or catalyst for some fun. If you love a good mystery, some time travel shenanigans and a great cast of characters, I highly recommend this book. #bookrec #bookrecommendation #bookreview #mysterybooks #historicalmystery #kelleyarmstrong
🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸 🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸

Beyond excited for a new Kate Clayborn, Kasie west, rainbow Rowell, Jenn Bennett and Beth O’Leary - I’ve enjoyed these authors in the past.

My historical loving heart is most excited for The Duke and How To Fake It In Society.

I love an emotional romance so The Art of Loving You is high on my list plus I’ve heard great things about this author.

I’m intrigued by Fast Lane especially since it’s being adapted for a tv series. I’m seeing comparisons to Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus series which I did love!
