New To the Queue is a sporadic thing around here wherein I give you a tiny glimpse into some of the books, movies, tv shows and bands I’ve recently added to my never ending queue of things to read/watch/listen to. For past posts, go here!

 Oh man, it’s been a while since I’ve done one of these — end of October?? I was pretty good about doing them monthly and then the holidays hit and who knows after that. I did do a 10 books I’ve added to my TBR recently post last month so you can check that out if you are curious what books I’ve added since the last time I’ve done this!

 

We Are the Ants by Shaun David Hutchison (Amazon // Goodreads)

Publication Date – January 2016

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list:  I got a package in the mail from Riveted Lit (a new book community run by Simon & Schuster but they don’t only focus on their books) and this was in it and looked interesting and a few friends have been raving about it.

What It’s About: It’s about a boy whose family is kind of falling apart but also he’s been abducted by aliens since he was 13 and in the latest abduction they have told him the world is going to end but they’ve given him an opportunity to save the world. He’s got 144 days to make his decision of whether or not to save the world…and himself.

 

 

The Smell of Other People’s Houses by Bonnie Sue Hitchcock ( Goodreads // Amazon)
Publication Date- February 23, 2016

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list: It showed up in the mail and the title definitely piqued my interest right away and then I read the summary which looked interesting plus I never see YA set in the 70’s let alone Alaska!

What It’s About:  “In Alaska, 1970, being a teenager here isn’t like being a teenager anywhere else. Ruth has a secret that she can’t hide forever. Dora wonders if she can ever truly escape where she comes from, even when good luck strikes. Flight of Dreams by Ariel Lawhon  (Amazon // Goodreads)
Release Date: February 23, 2016

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list: I love historical fiction and have an interest in reading books about disasters in history apparently! Especially ones that are still a bit of a mystery as to why/how it happened — it seems like this one might take the sabotage theory?? I don’t know but I want to find out!

What It’s About: It tells the story of the people who were aboard the doomed Hindenburg for the 3 days before it went down and reveals the secrets/lies/agendas of a few aboard that slowly reveals a mystery as to how and why the craft went up in flames.

 

Captive Prince by C.S. Pacat ( Amazon // Goodreads)

Release Date: no idea — I see conflicting years on Goodreads. Maybe 2012? Maybe 2014? IDK. I think maybe it was self pubbed first before it was picked up by Berkeley?

 

Why I Added It To My To-Be-Read list: I had never heard about this book until author Sarah J. Maas tweeted her love for the series so I checked it out and it looked interesting….and now I’ve been hearing everyone rave about it. So really must give it a try especially because it’s a blend of fantasy and romance.

Felt the need to clarify because I always get people excited thinking something is streaming on Netflix and it’s not!”

 

Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries

Why I Added It To My Netflix Queue:  Well my lovely friend Gillian has raved about it and I love lady detective shows soooo YEAH. Insta add! PLUS AUSSIE GOODNESS. The last Aussie show I watched was Dance Academy and it wrecked my life in the best way.

What It Is About: “Immerse yourself in the opulent world of Australia’s leading lady detective, Phryne Fisher. Scoffing at danger and decorum, Phryne is a glamorous, thoroughly modern woman of the 1920s whose cases take her to the underbelly of jazz-era Melbourne.”

Why I Added It To My Netflix Queue:  UGHHH so mad. I watched the first episode on demand after my Dance Academy binge because I wanted more dance and because it was free — which I was like HUH WEIRD WE DON’T GET THIS CHANNEL — then after getting sucked into it I went to watch the second episode and OH HEY YOU GOTTA PAY FOR THE REST. So they sucked me in with episode one and I can’t even watch it soooo THANK GOD FOR NETFLIX DISCS.

What It Is About: “Invited to join a world-famous New York ballet company, Claire has a stunning ballet career within her grasp — as long as she can learn how to compete in the glamorous but treacherous world she’s entered.”

Why I Added It To My Netflix Queue: I *THINK* I added it because it was on Paste Magazine’s best movies of 2015 and it sounded great! I should really make note of it

What It Is About: “Based on the classical Greek play “Lysistrata,” this biting satire follows a group of fed-up women who organize a crusade against the daily violence that surrounds them in the gang-ridden South Side of Chicago.”

 

 

Daughter — Not To Disappear

Why I Added It To My Musical Rotation:  I actually added this to my queue back in January when it came out because I had been waiting for it but I didn’t do one of these in January soooo had to add it. LOVE Daughter so much! I think their first album is still my favorite but who knows…I’ve only had a month to listen to this one so it might take the cake after a little more listening.

Ra Ra Riot — Need Your Light

 Why I Added It To My Musical Rotation: Ahh I got into Ra Ra Riot back during one of my last years of college in 2007 or 2008 I can’t remember. Finally saw them live a couple of years ago. I’ve been waiting for this album. It just came out so I’ve only had one or two listens (outside of the singles I had already heard) but DIGGING IT SO MUCH.

Wild Nothing — Life of Pause

Why I Added It To My Musical Rotation: I had really loved one of their songs back in 2012 and it was on a lot of my playlists for a while and then I kind of forgot about them until I saw they had a new album coming out. I’ve only listened to it once but I’m digging it. They have a kind of Beach House vibe and the day I listened to it it was really rainy and kind of perfect.
