So a couple weeks ago (I think) I was scrolling through Twitter and saw a tweet to a post about why someone likes binge reading book series. I didn’t get a chance to click through because I was just scrolling while waiting in line and I cannot for the life of me remember who it was that posted it (so sorry if it was you..let me know!) but it made me think for a bit.
When was the last time I binge read a series??
I binge watch tv all the time (seriously..Breaking Bad in December was the ultimate binge watch..GOD THAT SHOW) and I LOVE doing it. I get super invested and emotional and INTO it when I binge watch. It’s nice not having to wait for new episodes or even new seasons if it’s already out. It’s just plain ol’ FUN.
But I couldn’t remember the last time I binge read a series. I mean, we all know that I suck at finishing series and have a zillion unfinished series lying around. So I went on Goodreads, what a lifesaver that site is, and the last time I binge read a whole series was in November/December of 2008. And that series was TWILIGHT.
Seriously like 5 years since I last binge read a series?? It has to be a mistake. (It’s not). The closest thing was the Unearthly trilogy which I read one and then a couple weeks later would read the next and then a few more weeks and I finished it.
So, I thought about it for a little bit and thought how sad it was that I haven’t binge read a series in such a long time. In theory, I like the idea because obviously I love BINGE WATCHING. But what has held me back?
It’s blogging. I’ve already realized how blogging has changed my habits toward re-reading and reading chunky books without me even MEANING to do it. And I think that blogging has made me not binge read series.
WHY?
1. I now always have a zillion things to read and I get some sort of bookish ADD and want to keep jumping around to different things. I KNOW about so many more books now and hear about them daily and I just try to frantically read them all and I think my attention span has just decreased because I want to be on to the next story or world or character.
2. THIS I’d say is the biggest thing. I had this weird thing about how I’d review them because a) I am never ahead on my reviews so they kind of just get written and scheduled for pretty soon after I read them. If I binge read, I felt like it would take me longer and I’d have nothing on the blog in terms of book review-y type material. Now that I don’t care too much about that, I guess this is a non-issue. But I’m still in the habit. And b) I always used to feel like I should review every single one individually and I always felt like it would be too much having continuous reviews from the same series.
3. A lot of times the series I started aren’t complete yet. With getting review copies, the series I start often tend to be newer series and I don’t make as much time for the older, completed series like I’d like to.
My “reasons” made sense in my head but I’m just like, “WHY, brain, did you complicate things and make me stop doing something fun?”
So, in thinking about this, I decided I want to binge read a series soon because it’s soooo fun and I miss it. It’s gotten to be a bad habit to let blogging dictate my reading habits. I have a very laid back approach to this blog but those habits I formed pretty early on (feeling like I would have nothing to review if I took the time to binge read or too many reviews of the same series, etc) have been hard to shake even in my laid back, whatever approach. Some of it’s my own form of bookish ADD wanting to be reading different books but I’m going to make this happen and see how I like it. Plus, I think it might be fun to do a whole series review rather than try to review every single book because that’s tedious for me. I don’t know why my brain didn’t see that as an option way back when but, even if I had thought about it, I still would have been OH SO WORRIED about having zero review-y content for the duration of my binge read.
Getting excited to throw even MORE caution to the wind and not care and YOLO and all that good stuff when it comes to this blog. I don’t take this blog seriously and have been pretty laid back about it for a while but it’s just nice to find even more ways to not care. That sounds bad…but you know what I mean. I’ve formed habits I don’t like. They need to go. ASAP.
So, here’s where YOU COME IN. I want you to recommend me a great series to binge read!!! Thank you in advance, book nerds! I trust your recommendations!

Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Seriously addicting and crazy cliff hangers leaving you wanting more. Also, a page turner. I felt like I was reading super fast so I could find out what was going to happen next!

This year was the first time I have ever really binged-read a series. I binge-read Harry Potter up until Book #6 but then decided I needed a break before tackling the last 2. Then I just got done binge-reading The Saving Angels series by Tiffany King. They were pretty good. Fast reads, also.

Mistborn series by Brandon Sanderson! The first book is great, the second is good with an OHMYGOD ending, and the third book is SPECTACULAR. So binge reading would be totally worth it 🙂

The Mortal Instruments and everything that goes with it, I read them in about five days. Also, I’m not sure what the series is called, but the first book is called Nightshade, they’re by Andrea Cremer, and they are SO addictive.

I don’t really binge read series. I read The Iron Fey within a month, a book a week, so I suppose that could be classed as binge reading the series, but it was for a read-a-long, and I read other books alongside them and reviewed them separately, so I didn’t feel burnt out. I’m also reading my way through the Skulduggery series, but that’s also a book a week or fortnight, so I don’t feel like I’m binge reading my way through, I just feel like I’m reading. I would totally recommend the Starcrossed Trilogy by Josephine Angelini; it’s all mythology and legend based with some really great characters and a plot to die for! 🙂

OMG I LOVE binge-reading! I do it quite a lot and then take a break for a while when it’s over to recover, and like eat and sleep again! The last series I binged on was The Hunger Games and The Mortal Instruments (have to binge read that one again soon as prep for the next book!). I have my eye on a couple of series I’ve read about on blogs (uglies and requiem ring bells) and I have the whole Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Universe series sitting at home, I’m just to afraid to get stuck into it in case I hate it!

I am exactly the same! The last series I binge read was Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy! I have a ton of unfinished next-in-a-series books lying around, but I have been making an effort lately to get through them.

I can’t binge read series. If I keep reading the same series consistently, I get into a slump after I’m about a quarter of the way through the third book. It’s like my attention span won’t let me or something XD

It has also been a long time for me too since I binge read a serie.
But lately, I’m binge-reading two series.
I was binge-reading The Lunar chronicles by Marissa Meyer, but had to stop because I haven’t received yet my copy of Cress from The book depository!!! Bad timing 🙁 But I read Cinder/Scarlet/The little android in like… four days. So, Cress in the days to come and I’ll be dying to read Winter.
Meanwhile, as I was waiting for Cress, I began another serie where I bought the box set, and I’m ALSO binge-reading it, it’s Percy Jackson and the Olympians by Rick Riordan <3 I love it so much, I also read the first two books in less than a week, and I can't wait to read them all!! It just feels so good to be able to binge-read a serie, I mean, you get completely lost in the universe.
Oh, and I thought: how could you start Harry Potter without binge-reading the seven books???!

You absolutely must read the Silo series by Hugh Howey (Wool, Shift, and Dust are the three books). It’s a dystopian Hunger Games/Divergent/Maze Runner type, but for adults. You will not be able to put them down. They are incredible. I have reviews on my blog if you’re interested, but, frankly, you don’t need to know anything other how freaking good they are.

Honestly, I don’t remember the last series I binged on. I suppose it would have been HP – I’d reread all the books anytime a new one or a movie would come out.
I love binge-reading and I seriously wish I could do it more often – perhaps make a point of doing just that this summer? I guess the reason I don’t is because I’ll feel guilty for ignoring so many review copies (even though one of my goals this year is to start reading more of what I want and own!). Another reason I’ve been putting it off is because for the longest time I worried that a week straight of one particular series (assuming it’s only a trilogy) wouldn’t be that exciting for the people who read my blog. It’s super silly to think of it like that, especially when Hannah just posted an awesome series overview – for some odd reason I never considered reviewing every book in one post.
It seems this year is the year a LOT of series I like are coming to an end. Now’s the perfect time to do some binging!

Harry Potter for sure. The Infernal Devices, Percy Jackson, The Kane Chronicles, The Hourglass Door trilogy, Fablehaven, The Lord of the Rings, The Books of Pellinor, and The Ranger’s Apprentice series. All of them are finished and all are great.

I binge read The Harry Potter books in like, three days when I had strep throat and couldn’t go to work. The last movie was coming out, and I felt guilty I had never read them.
I also binge read The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, and the Lady Julia series by Deanna Raybourne, and all the Vampire Academy books in about a week.

Personally, I don’t like binge reading much. I like to take my time between books, it’s more enjoyable for me that way.

I binge read YA novels constantly (Divergent, Matched, Hunger Games, etc.). I just binge-read the Razorland series by Ann Aguirre and it was excellent. I do not recommend binge-reading Game of Thrones, however. I absolutely love the series, but each book is a huge undertaking and you will feel like you’ve been reading about that world forever. It definitely needs breaks in between.

The last series I binged read (while simultaneously listening to the audio version when in my car) was Patrick Ness’s Chaos Walking trilogy – “The Knife of Never Letting Go,” “The Ask and the Answer” and “Monsters of Men.” I do highly recommend this series. It was really different and gripping. I was very glad that all three books were already published so I didn’t have to wait to get through all of them.

Third person to recommend the Chaos Walking trilogy! It has been nominated for some pretty prestigious awards, this series is just epicly incredible on every level. There are few perfect books in this world and Patrick Ness managed to write three of them.

Fourth person for Chaos Walking!! I just read them in like a partial binge about a month ago! I had the first one and I would have jumped right into the second one, but not a single bookstore in my town had them so I had to order them in. So I had to wait about a week to read the 2nd and 3rd. I binge read every chance I get. I binge read the Hunger Games and the Delirium series this past year, and I try to binge reread Tamora Pierce’s quartets (at least some of them) once a year. I used to always reread series when the new books came out (Harry Potter, The Inheritance series, Princess Diaries, etc) , so I consider that binge reading too. Especially when they were longer series. But I’m a pretty new blogger, and I hope that I don’t lose my ability or desire to binge read over time. It’s just so awesome to be completely immersed in a different world for a week and feel like you are learning more and getting closer to characters you love. I think next up I’m going to binge read the Lunar Chronicles. I know the fourth one hasn’t come out yet, but if I love them that just means I can binge reread them in the future!

I’m such a black sheep when it comes to binge-reading *hides*. I absolutely have to take a break between each book in a series otherwise I start getting bored. I also prefer to review individual books, so taking a break gives me a chance to do that without feeling like I have nothing to say after the second book. I did recently read Words of Radiance immediately after finishing Way of Kings and in about a week, and since each is a 1,000 page book, that probably counts as binge reading? They are each basically a trilogy of normal-sized YA books put together, haha *dies*

I haven’t totally binge-read a story since the Hunger Games (and I was trapped in a car for almost 40 hours to do that). I don’t know what I would recommend, but the last series I (finally) finished was Diverget. I still need to finish the Matched trilogy.

Love binge reading. I saw this post and it was like, SO MUCH YES. I haven’t been bingeing as much because I’m too busy trying to keep up with my ARCs and if I stop to binge, I don’t get anything else done.
That said, sometimes I’m sort of compelled to binge. Like with the Jessica Darling series – I literally could not stop reading and I basically just shut up on my blog for awhile when I read it. And yeah, like you, I’m not very organized about my blogging, so I can’t just take time to binge.
The last time I binged was probably the Unearthly series, thanks to your rec! I read all three on my honeymoon last summer. The series I would most like to binge now is the Chaos Walking trilogy by Patrick Ness – I really wish I had time to do it because the first book ended on such a friggin cliffhanger and I really wanted to just start the next one…but blogging called. Gah.

I feel like we are thinking about the same thing at the same time. Right now there is a read-a-thon going on for the succubus series by Richelle Mead and so I’m binge reading an entire series back to back. This is weird for me as well because I haven’t done that with one series in quite a long time. I started to think about all of the unfinished series on my shelves and started to wonder if I shouldn’t binge read more often to stay current with the series I read. I actually think maybe I will try to binge read more series because then I can get through them, especially the ones that are already wrapped up.

I’m very much not a binge reader, but your post has made me think I should be!! I most recently did it with the Ruby Red Trilogy by Kirsten Gier – so so so good and The Razorland Series by Ann Aguirre! LOL I definitely do it with TV stuff – I’m currently watching GoT and plan to start Boardwalk Empire.
I would recommend either the ones I read above, or The Covenant Series by JLArmentrout – it’s complete and I loved it. I would also recommend The Graceling by Kristen Cashore AND Even The Iron Fey series by Julie Kagawa. (note all these are complete series) Daughter of Smoke & Bone – the final book comes out soon!!

Binge reading series can be so much fun! I just love not having to wait in between books for the next one, and it (the entire series, however long) winds up feeling just like one really really long story. I’m glad that you’ve decided to get back into the habit! I highly recommend the Newsoul series (which is no surprise! But seriously, it’s really good!) and the Fire and Thorns series (which is really good too!). I’m actually going to be binging on the Under the Never Sky series next month, and Legend, Jessica Darling and the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series at some point this year.

I don’t generally binge read either. Partly because I blog and partly because I like to have some space between books. I review as I read, so if I binge read a series I can never remember what happened in what book. I recently binge read the Article 5 series and I was having a heck of a time writing the review for Breaking Point because I couldn’t remember what happened in that one vs. Three. I have considered writing a series review before. What I like to do is if all or most of the books are out in a series is to read another book in between. This separates out the books in my mind a bit, but I’m still reading them in fairly quick order. By the same token, I also dislike having a lot of time inbetween reads because then I forget everything that happened and I don’t usually reread (too many new books to read!).

I think the last thing I binge read was… *thinks* the True Blood series. I was given a box set for my birthday and read them so fast it made me dizzy!
I feel like a mixture of blogging and furiously studying for my degree has changed my reading habits now.
I like to know that when I finish book 1 in a series I don’t have to wait a year for the sequel, it makes me feel less desperate. But I dont go running for the book shop the day after im finished anymore.

Binge reading is my prefered method for reading a series. Obviously I read books in a series with out binge reading, but when I can stay immersed in a story and just continue it on, I feel I enjoy the series better. It is always hard to pick up a book after not being in that world for so long and get back into it. I usually can within a few chapters (if I don’t re-read the previous books, which I will sometimes) but it is always a rocky start. I think that is why I have so many unfinished series. I have most recently been binge reading JLA’s Covenant series (like right now). I have also binge-read the Across the Universe series by Beth Revis, the Sweep series by Cate Tiernan, and Vampire Academy by Rachelle Mead, and every time Cassandra Clare comes out with a new book in her Mortal Instruments series I have re-read every book. Which means I have read City of Bones multiple times. I recommend any of those series, in addition to the Dead Beautiful series by Yvonne Woon (last book finally came out in Jan), Marie Lu’s Legend series, the Shatter Me series (Taherah Mafi), and the Seven Realms series by Cinda Williams Chima . I don’t necessarily know if you have already read any of these, but if you haven’t, then there you go! Some more ideas!!

I just binge read Jennifer Armentrout’s The Covenant series except I still need to read book #5 Sentinel. It was a good binge read, books & novellas. I read Damion, Half-Blood, Pure, Deity, Elixir, Apollyon over 10 days. Not all series are meant to binge read, this one is. Now I just need to get my hands on the last book.

I love this blog post! I haven’t even thought about binge-reading a series in SO LONG. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve binged-read more than a few series in total. One was actually during my christmas break of December 2012. Last one, too. But I tend to binge-read the first couple books in a series (and then I get mad because I have to wait for the sequels) more than I do a whole series. Probably because all the ones I’ve started/want to read don’t have all the books out yet. However, now this makes me want to do another binge-read for a WHOLE series. It does sound like so much fun, Jamie! 🙂

I just binge read the books that are out in The Lunar Chronicles series. Cinder, Scarlet, and Cress. It was PHENOMENAL! But now I’m kicking myself that I have to wait a year for Winter to come out. Why-hy-hyyyyyyy did I do that to myself?? Ugh. But, I made it a goal this year to finish the big series I’m in the middle of that already have all the books out (or the finale is coming out this year). I’ve been holding back on keeping up with a few just so that I could binge read them, like The Mortal Instruments, and the Sookie Stackhouse series.

I’m like shocked by myself. So far this year, I’ve read and completed two series. Have I read anything else? Not really. The book I’m reading now is a standalone nonfiction, so it will break the pattern. But I have realized (more like remembered) that it is great to read a series, with its books back to back. I just don’t want to have to reread the first books in the series to finish a series…there’s so many books where I read the first and the second fast, but had to wait for the third one to come out. And I have yet to read the 3rd one. I need to work on that.

I think binge reading is super fun, but I’m realizing I don’t do it often. And really, it’s because I just don’t have time. I already have a thousand books to read, and fitting at least three books into that schedule can be a pain. But I love the idea! And speaking of which, since the series ends next month, I might binge read the Daughter of Smoke and Bones soon!

I enjoy binge-reading series mostly so I don’t forget things, and so I get a better sense of the story and arks. If a series isn’t finished yet, I usually try to re-read/binge the books leading up to the latest book. Sometimes it’s easier than others. Sometimes I get tired of a series and have to branch out into something else to renew my interest in reading altogether. That was how it was for me with Tamora Pierce’s books: I tried to read ALL her books in one long binge, but only made it through 5 (of at the time 27). Depending on the series it can be daunting and more of a deterrent than a motivator.
I’m about to ‘binge’ Leigh Bardugo’s Shadow and Bone & Siege and Storm books, then try to get in Tahereh Mafi’s Unravel Me, Fracture Me, and Ignite Me. I’ll admit that blogging does put a slight damper on re-reads, but if I’m able to get ahold of a copy of the audiobook (when I didn’t before) then I can at least write up some new content on it, so it’s a win/win.

The comments are very YA heavy so let me throw in a ‘grown-up’ series or two. The Sevenwaters series by Juliet Marillier is beyond fabulous (all of her stuff is!) and if you’re into historical fiction at all the Amelia Peabody series by Elizabeth Peters is such fun. Strong female leads and great relationships in both along with beautiful writing, well-researched time periods and just plain fantastic stories. They’re both the kinds that kept me up all night to finish and clamoring for the next installment.

I can’t remember the last time I binge read either! I’m seriously looking at my shelves now and trying to figure it out…And I’m thinking it was the Night World series by L.J. Smith. Or maybe her Forbidden Game trilogy. But still–that was at least four years ago. I know I tried to binge the Vampire Academy books, but then I had to wait forever and a half for the fourth and fifth books to be in (which was freaking torture), so it didn’t exactly work out.
As for a series I suggest you binge read, I would go with Jennifer L. Armentrout’s Covenant series. The last book just came out this past November (which I plan on reading super soon) and I’ve loved that series so far. Pretty much anything by Jen is worth reading consecutively. Her books are so great. 🙂

I LOVE binge reading series! If all the books are out, I’ll just read one after the other after the other and love every minute. Only downside….I get some pretty bad book hangovers after a binge reading session. I think it’s because I feel like I’ve LIVED in that series and that world for so long *usually about a week*, that I have NO idea what to pick up next. But that also happens with binge watching TV….you mean, I watched them all? What do I do with my LIFE?? Lol
Another favorite is reading the first 2 books in a series back to back, then waiting for the third book to be released. That way I get to read a good chunk of the story and get really invested, so that when the 3rd book comes out I’m pumped! I did that last year with a few series, so this year I’ve got quite a few 3rd books coming out that I plan to read right away….Cress by Marissa Meyer is one example (I read it last month).
I keep a goodreads list of finished series that I want to start for when I’m in the mood to binge read. It’s been really helpful. Happy reading!

I used to binge read series, but only because I was so unaware of what was out there! I read Twilight and Harry Potter – and reread them over and over again until they practically fell apart. My horizons weren’t opened until last summer, and now I’m jumping around EVERYWHERE trying to catch up on everything that I’ve missed out on!
I also find that I have horrible anxiety about series endings – I seriously have five or six series where all I need to read is the end book to finish them. I’m horrible at saying goodbye, and I’m always SO afraid that I won’t get the ending I’m hoping for!

I love finding series I can binge read! I recently binge read the Fire and Thorns trilogy! On one hand, having read a book since release means I can go “oh I read that when it first come out!” but the wait for the next book is horrible! Binge reading = me not having to wait for the ending because I can gobble it all up at once and the feels just keep coming and by the end I’m hopefully extremely satisfied.
I highly recommend Covenant series by Jennifer L. Armentrout, Fire and Thorns trilogy by Rae Carson, Legend trilogy by Marie Lu, The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han. An amazing adult paranormal series I binge read was the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning – that was SPECTACULAR. Thank god I had all 5 books on me because books 3 and 4 ended in cliffhangers.

I haven’t read the whole series yet but I loved Partials by Dan Wells and the 3rd book of the trilogy just came out so you could finish off the series.
I binge read the first three Covenant books by JLA last year and then lost interest in finishing the last 2. But the first three were DEF binge read material.
I decided recently that the reason I have so many incomplete series is that book 2 (of a trilogy) generally disappoints me a little if I have too much time to process it before the final book and lessens my excitement for the end. My new plan is to hold off on book 2 until I can just finish the series.

I’m a blogger so I can’t binge read often. I think the last time I read multiple books in a series back-to-back was before I started blogging and I couldn’t stop myself from reading the Lux series by Jennifer L. Armentrout.

I like to binge-read series (if they are 3-4 books). Any longer and I try to split it up by reading a book in between each one (because sometimes it gets a little old). But the biggest reason why I enjoy it and I try not to let blogging dictate what I read and when, is because it is fun to stay in that world and pick up on the story right where the last book left off. I feel like I have a better feel for the characters, the writing, etc. when I marathon-read.

WOAH 5 years?? That’s insane girl! I’ve discovered recently that I absolutely need to binge-read a series to be able to truly, truly enjoy it and get the most out of it. When I binge read I get fully invested into the series and feel deeply for the characters. When I read books as each one comes out every year I started to forget important details when I just start the book and I begin to feel a bit disconnected with the story.
I recommend reading The Maze Runner trilogy by James Dashner – especially since the movie is coming out and well, you HAVE to read the book before watching the movie. You know how it works. 😉

I’ve been wanting to binge read the Flavia de Luce series by Alan Bradley. They’re fun, quick reads; I’d recommend them 🙂

I actually prefer to binge read series rather than reading one and waiting, what seems like forever, for the next one to come out. You should binge read all the Harry Potter books. I’m currently reading them again and on The Chamber of Secrets. I love the books so much more than the movies. This world is always so enjoyable and exciting to jump back into even after reading it a couple of times and watching the movies. (:

I actually don’t think I’ve ever binge read a whole series, but two come pretty close… With the exclusion of the first book, I read the whole Harry Potter series with one other book between each book. With a series that long I just had to space it out with one book in between. And the other series is a lot shorter: The Summer Series by Jenny Han. I pretty much read those back to back within a few days. Good luck!!

I binge read the Harry Potter series in six weeks several years ago because I had never read them and it seemed like everyone else had. I had two months to get it done before my next book club book was due (we took a bread during the holidays) so I put my head down and did it. It was pretty intense but I loved it! I love when “working hard” refers to reading.

I LOVE TO BINGE READ. Some of the best books to binge read are the Lux series and the Covenant series. Both written by Jennifer L. Armentrout. Also read the Mad World Series by Christine Zolendz and the grace series by S. L. Naeole.
