What Wild Awake Is  About:
Kiri’s parents are cruising around the world for most of the summer — leaving Kiri alone to devote her time to playing piano, practicing for Battle of the Bands and hanging out with Lukas — her best friend and bandmate and maybe something else. Her summer plan is in full swing until she gets a mysterious phone call that brings her into a seedy part of the city to retrieve some stuff that belonged to her older and now deceased sister whom she looked up to. Her perfectly planned summer suddenly spirals into something she couldn’t have planned for as she learns the truth about her sister’s life, relives her loss over again and meets someone who helps her to live and learn to be free.

Why You Should Be Saving  The Date:

1. This book is something else!In a good way, for me. I’m going to be honest with you, it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea! On the outside it looks like this cute, straightforward contemporary read with a happy ending but it’s not. It’s fresh and unique and I totally loved it. It’s not at all a plot driven novel so if you are cool with that than I think you and this book could quite well get along.

2. The writing makes this book engaging and all absorbing. It’s  very “in the head”, kind of stream of consciousness writing with that vivid imagery I dig & more “flowery” writing. For me, her writing reminded me a bit of  Tahereh Mafi’s Shatter Me, a hint of Jandy Nelson’s  The Sky is Everywhere but Hilary T. Smith is completely her own. I’ve read few books where the writing matches the energy the character exudes — chaotic, frenetic and sometimes deliriously mad (and high haha). She feels EVERYTHING so intensely — both joy and plunging sadness — that’s her energy just pulses through you and holds you captive.

3. Wild Awake was emotional in an unexpected way and in unexpected places. I went into this knowing there were going to be some emotions because Kiri had lost her sister but some of these scenes were so emotional in unexpected ways and I LOVE WHEN A BOOK DOES THAT TO ME. Whew. Lots of feelings. And not just crying kind of emotional but also rage inducing — at Kiri’s parents and at some of the things Kiri does. It’s just INTENSE being in Kiri’s mind and watching her just do things (sometimes dangerous, stupid & reckless) and KNOW that she is just having a very scary breakdown.

Who Should Save The  Date: Fans of contemporary YA looking for something truly different, people who love beautiful imagery and energetic prose, a story charged with emotion and energy in a less obvious way, people who don’t need a plot driven novel

A Sneak Peek: “There’s an exaggerated kind of industriousness to their movements, bright and false, like kids pretending to be absorbed in taking notes so the teacher doesn’t call on them. Mom is unscrewing a giant bottle of vitamin pills that gives off a scent like rubber flowers, Dad’s pouring himself a glass of water at the sink, and for the first time since Sukey died I can see us clearly, hovering at the intersection of love and avoidance like lost tourists who can’t decide which road will bring them home.”  (this is taken from the advanced copy I received from the publisher, in exchange for an honest review, and could be subject to change)

Be on the lookout for my FULL review closer to the release date where I will flesh out my thoughts a little more!

Have you read this one? Are you excited for it?? Putting it on your TBR list?

I’m super glad that you loved this book because I wish I could have shared that same opinion! I thought I was going to love this book, but for me, it ended up being quite the opposite. I think I just fall into that “it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea!” category that you talked about! Ultimately the writing style and plot were not to my tastes. 🙁

But I’m really happy you loved it!!

It’s so interesting because I can’t even say that I really LIKED Kiri that much but I was intrigued by her. She has gone through things, has found out things and I was so invested in her while watching her spiral out of control. It was hard to watch sometimes!

That awkward moment where you read a really positive review-ish thing for a book you really want to read and realize you probably shouldn’t read it. 🙁

    Here’s what concerns me:

“It’s very “in the head”, kind of stream of consciousness writing with that vivid imagery I dig & more “flowery” writing.”

I feel like this book and I probably wouldn’t be friends. It sounds like it MIGHT read like Fear and Loathing in Shatter Me, which would probably be the worst thing for me ever. Stream of consciousness and I are not generally friends, and the samples I’ve seen from Shatter Me made my eyes get really wide.

BUT I am so glad that this book gave you all the feels. I love when that happens.

Ahh I’m scared that maybe I shouldn’t have said Shatter Me…because it’s not THAT stream of consciousness compared to that book but had some of those qualities. Really vivid descriptions and stuff. I just wanted to show that it wasn’t like a straight up contemporary read like a Jenny Han or a Stephanie Perkins. It’s way different. I hope maybe you’ll give it a try…though you know better what you’ll like!

Well, I didn’t remove it from my to-read on GR, but I also didn’t request a review copy because it would be so awkward to hate it after that. So. Maybe at some future date I will try it and love it, but I’m not going to freak out to get a copy when I have reservations, you know?

I’m kind of obsessed with books that take place over the summer for some reason (wishful thinking, maybe?), so this sounds perfect. Also, the fact that this reminds you of Mafi’s reading makes me go all YES inside because I love her style. And the feelings. I Love the feelings.

Oh, I didn’t request this one on EW because of a review, but this is definitely eye-opening. I’m glad you enjoyed this one so much, Jamie! I’m not too huge a fan of flowery prose, and the drug abuse in this one may be a bit too tedious after what I’ve garnered from other reviews, but I’ll definitely keep an open mind towards this should I ever receive an ARC. Thanks!

Also: I love this feature. Do you mind if I use it whenever the need be, but give credit to you? I keep putting off books I’m dying to read that are released in a few months because I don’t want to be behind on blog content, but this looks like it’d clear that up.

Yeah I’ve seen a few scathing reviews for it (but also talked to friends who enjoyed it too) but I think, from what I read, it’s a matter of taste and also what you take from it. I personally didn’t find the drug use that excessive…I think a lot of it was the fact that she was spinning out of control and having a psychotic breakdown of sorts. I mean, she did smoke a lot of weed too lol

And sure thing! It was the most perfect solution I could come up with for this dilemma! 🙂

But you had me at T Mafi’s writing style, which I LOVE LOVE LOVE and totally connect to. I love that you call it “flowery” and “high” because I think I can almost imagine what you’re talking about. This makes me really excited and I hope I get to feature this one during my contemporary month in May.

Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technic Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technically ATMOSPHERE but I feel like between my stories and my dedicated post to it, I’d rather talk about the book I read before it but didn’t update y’all on.

The Trouble With Anna — I enjoyed this delightful little historical romance about a heroine who is carving out her independence only to find out, when her grandfather dies, that he tied her inheritance/future to marrying her best friend’s brother — a not-so-happy surprise for both of them. I could understand why they both had some guardness/walls up and I enjoyed watching them slowly start to lower them.

Mayhem and the Mortal - I’m not too far into this romantic fantasy but it is one of my most anticipated that came out last month and I’m excited to dig in more.

Hamnet — I know, I know. For April I decided not to make a traditional TBR list of books I wanted to read but instead give myself some prompts to guide my reading (bc I’m overwhelmed with all my choices at hand) without feeling rigid. One of the prompts was to read a book I HAD TO BUY but is still unread. So going to finally get to it. Have you read this one or watched the movie?

What are you currently reading?
I had been waiting for the perfect time to read th I had been waiting for the perfect time to read this one after Random House sent me a finished copy as TJR is a longtime auto-buy author. I found myself caught up in all the space joy and wonder and feeling quite parasocial about the Artemis crew...I decided now was the time.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

I hadn’t really known what it was about but I didn’t really need to given its TJR & the fact it was 1980s NASA & astronauts.

But this book was about love to me - romantic love, platonic love, familial love, love for something bigger than yourself, love for the person you are & are becoming, love in the face of obstacles, love for what lights you up.

Having been invested in real life astronauts & their journey lately really made this book even more vivid to me — seeing the bonds of the crew so deeply, feeling the fragility that exists while they are doing this wondrous & crazy thing that often still boggles my mind that we can do.

And, hardest to put into words, that feeling of awe in the expansive nature & capabilities of love & the universe that I felt when a husband named a crater after his late wife which doubly helped me understand how Joan & Vanessa felt looking back at earth.

It made me sob & feel everything about being a human so deeply basically from that Frances/Joan phone call at 86% of the way through until the final words. Like could not breathe.

*might be a tiny bit spoilery so beware:

I think the way she wrote this was so impactful bc we start out knowing something bad happens &it’s not even that far when we know that some of them def won’t make it back & some are alive in peril.

I was like “oof” when *it* happens early on. But each and every chapter where we learn more about these ppl & their relationships felt agonizing & I was retroactively grieving for them more deeply every turn of the page.

The hurt and grief just compounds from a moment that was sad from the jump to something that had dug in deep to me.

To know what happens right before this mission makes the mission control bits even more excruciating. Makes the peril a character is in hit even harder than just “oh that must be scary!”.

I loved it. I needed it bad.
The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being m The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being my reading whims, quirks and troubles.

Interesting things:

1. January started out rough. I only read 1 physical book and leaned very heavy into audiobooks only. At first it was distressing that my brain -thanks to current events and their effect on my mind - couldn’t work out how to sit down and read with my eyeballs but I was like…let’s just roll with it and wait for it to pass. So I waited and enjoyed a ton of audiobooks.

2. I don’t think I’ve ever read so many thrillers and mysteries in a quarter. It’s a genre I love but I’m normally quite more balanced. However, it’s what I was craving and what my brain was tolerating so…I just went with it.

3. I have always been a reader led by my moods (both how I feel reading wise and personally). This quarter was FERAL. Like the most feral mood reading ever. I couldn’t even categorize it. I’d decide on one book enthusiastically and suddenly I was like…absolutely not that.

4. I read way less fantasy than normal which was WEIRD but I felt like I also wasn’t surprised given my brain space.

5. I really started to resent people even more who said “it’s a book account stop talking about politics etc”. Babe, I’m a human who gives a shit but ALSO this has and always been an account of MY reading life. And my reading life was profoundly affected by the things that were going on in this country. Like they have been before - whether it’s been current events or things like having a kid, being depressed, slumps, etc.

6. I return to the fact that, for me, I am happiest when I pay attention to my reading whims. The end of the month I had a very specific reading mood (wanted time travel element but not a heavy time travel book) and I decided to pick up A Rip Through Time at the end of the month and I’m now halfway through book 4. Having the best time ever!!!

Anyways, tell me how your reading life was in Q1! Fave books? Biggest surprises??

I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first try when trying to satisfy a super specific reading mood - Kelley Armstrong’s A Rip Through Time definitely nailed what I wanted. Time travel but didn’t really want too time travely…just more of a vibe or catalyst for some fun. I love an emotional romance so The Art of Loving You is high on my list plus I’ve heard great things about this author.

I’m intrigued by Fast Lane especially since it’s being adapted for a tv series. I’m seeing comparisons to Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus series which I did love!

New historical fiction books on my radar for April New historical fiction books on my radar for April and I feel like there is quite a bit of variety. Any of these on your TBR? #historicalfictionbooks #historicalfiction #newbookrelease #newbookreleases
Being someone who reads based on their ever shifti Being someone who reads based on their ever shifting reading moods (sometimes very feral) makes library holds and tbrs very hard. It’s the worst when 5 weeks ago I would have gobbled the library hold up but now when the hold comes in I’m like…I think not. #readersofinstagram #readerproblems #librarylife #librarybooks #moodreader
