This week’s topic: Top Ten 2014 Releases I Wished I Got To…But Didn’t
AHH this could be a list of at least 50 books. So many books I wanted to get to in 2014! BUT I did get to so many great 2014 release (see: here and here). But here are 10 that I had REALLY hoped to get to and didn’t. Hopefully this year I will make time for them! Tell me which ones I should focus on!
A Thousand Pieces Of You by Claudia Gray: This sounded like an awesome sci-fi book and start to a series. AND THAT COVER.
The Summer Of Letting Go by Gae Polisner: I picked this up early in the year at ALA and had full intentions of getting to it because it sounded like such a ME contemporary YA novel.
Prisoner of Night & Fog by Anne Blankman: I was so excited about this historical YA and heard good things!
The Chance You Won’t Return by Annie Cardi:This was one of my most anticipated debuts of 2014 and after Ginger loved it so much I really wanted to get to it. But alas.
Say What You Will by Cammie McGovern: This one was one of my most anticipated reads of 2014 but I FAIL.
The Kiss of Deception by Mary E. Pearson: I’m actually planning to read this one this month! I’ve heard it’s an amaaaazing fantasy!
Something Real by Heather Demetrios:SO MANY GOOD THINGS I HEARD ABOUT THIS ONE!
The Vanishing Season by Jodi Lynn Anderson: I love Jodi’s Tiger Lily and so I was SO excited for this book!
The Truth About Alice by Jennifer Mathieu: Jennifer wrote a really great post of reading recs for books about sexuality & slut-shaming on this blog and I was already to read her book right then but between my reading attention span being that of a gnat plus being a mood reader…somehow it didn’t happen.
The Art of Lainey by Paula Stokes: I wanted to save this one for when I needed a book that would make me smile and apparently I just wanted to be depressed the whole year (no not really but idk why I never got to this).
So tell me…have you read any of these? What’s one book you really wanted to get to in 2014 but didn’t??

I reaaally need to read A THOUSAND PIECES OF YOU just because of the cover. I have ARCs of PRISONER OF NIGHT AND FOG, SAY WHAT YOU WILL, and THE VANISHING SEASON but still need to read them. (Actually, I started THE VANISHING SEASON, but was so bored ten pages in that I set it aside.) I got THE ART OF LAINEY from one of my Secret Santas and am excited to read it! And I have heard many excellent things about THE KISS OF DECEPTION, which is always nice.

I REALLY wanted to read A Thousand Pieces of You but despite the pretty cover, the reviews have not been so pretty and now I’m not so sure if I want to pick it up especially since I have a way too long TBR list.

I would HIGHLY recommend The Truth About Alice. It was one of the last reads I squeezed in for 2014 and it’s such a raw look at bullying and slut shaming in small towns and I think it’s a really important addition to the YA genre, as I really respect books that tackle tough topics. It also handled multiple POVs really well for a debut novel!

I adored Something Real and Prisoner of Night and Fog. I really want to read Say What You Will and The Kiss of Deception too. I hope you enjoy these books when you get to reading them!

I *need* to read Prisoner of Night and Fog! It’s very high on my wishlist right now, to buy once I’ve read a few of the books on my TBR. Maybe we should do a buddy read since we’re apparently historical YA brain twins 😀

You will love Prisoner of Night and Fog! Such fabulous historical fiction. I’m excited for the sequel. I also need to read The Kiss of Deception! One that I have on my list is Snow Like Ashes–I’ve heard that it’s wonderful fantasy, so I’m really excited about it. I was amazed at how many 2014 releases I didn’t get to, but it was a full reading year, and I’m sure this will be a full one as well.

Something Real– SAME! Especially after I’ve started reading I’ll Meet You There, which I’m falling head over heels in love with, just like you told me I would. Josh & Skylar are two of the best characters I’ve met in a long time. Eeeeeee! 🙂

The Kiss of Deception, Something Real and The Art of Lainey are all fantastic. You should definitely try to get to them this year. I just read Kiss of Deception not that long ago and it blew my mind. I need book 2 like yesterday.

I read and enjoyed The Art of Lainey. I didn’t read The Kiss of Deception, but after hearing so many people talk about how much they enjoyed it, and wanting to read more fantasy novels, I think I might pick this one up this year. A Thousand Pieces of You is another one that I want to read this year!

The Kiss of Deception was actually one of my first books read this year. It was a unique fantasy in many ways. I loved Something Real, and The Truth about Alice was also pretty good.
Like you, I’ve been saving The Art of Lainey for when I needed a pick-me-up, but I may have to just go ahead and read it at some point.

The Truth About Alice is absolutely stunning, but so hard to read emotionally. Totally worth reading, but your mood will either make or break it. A Thousand Pieces of you has the most gorgeous cover. It makes me want to add that to my TBR pile.
I can’t believe I forgot to put The Art of Lainey on my list! I even own a copy, because my library was being so slow about ordering it. I bought it over the summer, intending to read it immediately, then never did. Ugh, ridiculous.

I really wanted to read The Truth About Alice too in 2014 but didn’t even get around to buying it. But now I have it and I’m determined to start it soon, especially since it’s such a short book. I’m really interested and hope it will be good, since I haven’t heard many people talk about it.

I actually own three of those books and also need to read them! Prisoner of Night and Fog will be my first historical fiction, so I’m kind of nervous/excited about that. At least it’s WWII which is my best time period in history 😛 The Kiss of Deception is one I debated on for a while, but now that I have it I’m really hoping I end up enjoying it too! And since Demetrios is releasing I’ll Meet You There in a month, I figured I should read Something Real as well 😀

Based on the books you read and all the reviews I’ve seen on your blog, I think you’ll fall in love with Say what you will. I’m not a contemporary reader, but this book blew me away. Such a heart-warming and impressive story.
Prisoner of night and fog is a strong story and I liked that we got to see Hitler in another light. I mean, he must have been very charming and persuasive and that’s nicely done.
The vanishing season.. don’t get your expectations go to high. I’m a HUGE fan of Tiger Lily and this book will always be one of my favorites, but I was let down here 🙁

The only one on your list I’ve read is Say What You Will and I really, really enjoyed it! I also have A Thousand Pieces of You to read, it looks and sounds amazing, but because I know it’s the first of the series I’m holding off in case of a cliff-hanger!

Something Real and Prisoner of Night and Fog were both incredible! Both hard hitting emotionally but with enough kissing to lighten the mood 😉 The Truth About Alice was also interesting, as was Say What You Will (though I still had my fair share of issues with it)

I read Say What You Will around the Christmas holiday. It was really hard to put down. Things got a little crazy plot-wise, but it definitely had some great characters to root for in it. Hope you enjoy it!

The Kiss of Deception is WONDERFUL!! And I really liked THE VANISHING SEASON, although I think TIGER LILY is much better.
I’m with you on SOMETHING REAL – it seems like everyone loves that book!

Ahh, Prisoner of Night and Fog!! You definitely need to read this one! I loved it, it was a great historical YA and I’m so excited about the second book coming out this year! Kiss of Deception was also a good read.

I really wanted to get to The Truth About Alice, too! I actually requested a copy, but it never turned up – I hope they weren’t waiting on a review… I’d like to get to Something Real before the author releases her next book in Feb. We got some reading to do!

The Truth About Alice was super good! Teenagers are terrible! The Chance You Won’t Return is one I keep eying, since my library got it in for Kindle, and I hadn’t heard of it previously.

Seriously, Jamie, Prisoner of Night and Fog. I know we talked about it on Twitter, but READ IT, READ IT NOW. It was amazing, plus the second book comes out in April, so if you read it soon-ish, you’d be ready. 😉 The only other book from your list I’ve read is The Art of Lainey, which was really cute. The Kiss of Deception!!!! Omg sooooo good! I just read it (I think it was my first book of 2015 actually…) and it is amazing!!! I am dying for the next one. There’s a love triangle (which I normally don’t like, but trust me, this is a good one) and I honestly have no idea which guy I am rooting for.

I think I am in the minority in saying that I really did NOT like Say What You Will. I wasn’t a huge fan of the author’s portrayal of either of the main characters’ disabilities: Amy’s cerebral palsy is something she can “work around” in a way that no one with CP whom I have known actually can, and even though Amy is the one who basically diagnoses Matt’s obsessive compulsive disorder, she expects him to “get over it” in a way that I find insulting to people with mental illnesses. Instead of feeling like a romance built on mutual respect I felt like Amy was using Matt for basically the entire book, and limiting him from being able to live his own life. The plot also contained at least one twist that I absolutely hate in YA books.
