This week’s topic: Top Ten Series I’d Like To Start But Haven’t Yet
This could easily have been a list of 50. I tried to pick series that have been on my shelf for a while or were older because there are so many first books in a series that I’ve meant to pick up released in the last year!
1. Shadow & Bone by Leigh Bardugo: Pretty much everyone I know has read and RAVES about this series.
2. Across the Universe by Beth Revis: I pre-ordered this bad boy when it came out and still it sits. I had really good intentions after I saw her at a Breathless Reads tour but here we are…
3. Graceling by Kristin Cashore: I’ve been wanting to get into fantasy and everyone says START HERE. I’ve had this on my shelf for years just because I had heard so much about it.
4. Cinder by Marissa Meyer: This one never interests me before it came out but the blogosphere started buzzing about it and everybody I know LOVES IT SO MUCH. It’s sitting here from the library and is a few days overdue…OOPSIE.
5. Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead: My friends are going to start to disown me if I don’t read this soon.
6. Bright Young Things by Anna Godbersem: This came out around the same time as Vixen — another YA historical full of flappers — and I read and loved Vixen so I decided I’d wait and start BYT after a little so I didn’t compare them too much.
7. Blood Red Road by Moira Young: I bought this at a Borders closing sale because I was super intrigued by post-apocalyptic lit and heard great things. But soon it got lost in all the new books I bought. haha
8. The Iron King by Julie Kagawa: So much love for this series amongst bloggers and I even met her at BEA and she was delightful!
9. Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor: Seriously. I don’t know why I’ve waited so long!
10. The Eyre Affair by Jasper Fforde: I bought this like 5 years ago at a used book sale because I thought it sounded cool. Then I got on Goodreads and saw it was a very popular series and got excited. But then I went down the rabbit hole of Goodreads and found millions of other books to buy and this got neglected.
Also, *cough cough* Harry Potter & Divergent. Pleasedonotnoticethis.
So tell me…which series off my list have you read/not read but are wanting to? Which series do I need to BUMP up the TBR list?

You MUST read Graceling and Shadow & Bone. I hadn’t read Cinder until a few weeks ago and I’m so mad at myself for procrastinating! But Bright Young Things is on my list as well.

I haven’t read The Vampire Academy series either (I might someday). But, seriously (I’m sure you’ve heard it once or twice before), you must read Daughter of Smoke and Bone- like right now, stop what you’re doing and get er’ done. And after that, Cinder will be waiting for you. You don’t know what you are missing.

Read Bright Young Things!! I loved the Luxe series by Goberson, that’s my personal favorite series of hers, but Bright Young Things is just such a dreamy story to read! It’s truly entertaining and lovely in every way.

So I’ve read 2,3,4,5,7,8, and 9 from your list. And I say start Blood Red Road, Iron King or Daughter of Smoke and Bone. =) BRR and DoSaB are better than their sequels, while book 3 of the Iron Fey is the best among the series!

Number 10 is on my list as well.
Ifyou’re trying to get into fantasy, the Iron Fey series is a nice starting point, it’s a well built world, structured on the common faerie mythology but with a great twist as well. Not to mention, that series is complete, so you don’t have to wait for more books.

Oh man, I can’t believe I forgot Laini Taylor on my list! That’s definitely one I’ve been meaning to start (and everyone gives me flack for not having done so yet haha). And I share the Shadow and Bone – everyone loves it, it looks brilliant, the cover art is enough to make me want to devour it…but nothing yet. We’ll get there, Jaime. Soon.
I do have insist you get to that overdue Cinder! And Across the Universe, as that was the book that started me book blogging in general and I love it so much. Plus, the series is complete so you won’t have to wait on any!
(and don’t think I didn’t notice that at the end! I’m cowering in the same corner regarding Divergent, but HARRY POTTER?!)

I’m hearing so much about Cinder that I’m going to have to break down and read it although I never in a million years would have thought that cyborgs were my thing. The Thursday Next series is on my list too! I’ve always been intrigued by it, but I don’t own any them, so I’ve never actually started reading them.

I think Shadow and Bone, Across the Universe, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone are all only mediocre. However, Graceling, Cinder, and Vampire Academcy are all mindblowing and you need to read them right now.

I hesitated on CINDER, too, just because it looked too sci-fi for me, but a book blogging friend kept telling me to read it already and guess what? TOTAL book love. The sequel’s just as good, maybe even better. I’d definitely recommend getting to the series soon (after you renew your library book, of course).

I haven’t finished HP yet either! I’m on book 4. Also I don’t even think Divergent is on my TBR list :/. I started Vampire Academy but couldn’t finish…but then Richelle Meads did a spinoff (Bloodlines) and I LOVE IT. So I’ll be re-reading VA soon. Across the Universe is coming up soon on my TBR list (I have to read Boundless, So Close to You, and For Darkness Shows the Stars first.)

word of advice: if you read the Jasper Fforde series, definitely read them all at once, they can be very confusing, but they are sooooo GOOD! I highly recommend them.

I got a lot of recomendations from friends for Across the Universe but I didn’t read it altough I also bought first book. I also forgot to add it to my list. I really should read this soon.
Graceling is awesome and kick-ass ya fantasy (one of my favorites) but I don’t know why I have a feeling reading your reviews that you would more enjoy something subtle with a lot more emotions like Seraphina.
Cinder is the best retelling I read. And it was so weird reading from cyborgs point of view. When she comments how she some display poped-up in her view with some warning. It was so weird.
Vampire Academy is definitelly something you should read soon. One of the best ya I have read for sure. 🙂
The Iron King did not survive all the hype around it. When I read it it felt full of cliches from ya paranormal series altough most of those cliches were set by this series so maybe it was my fault for not reading it sooner. LOL
Daughter of Smoke and Bone – I got it on my list too.

Fire is better than Graceling, but the series as a whole is awesome.
And Jasper Fforde? One of my favorite authors EVER. Seriously. You will want to curl up in his books and live there and be Thursday Next. Sigh. And the parallel Nursery Crimes series? Love it. And his new one, Shades of Grey? Awesome too. AND HE IS WRITING YA NOW TOO! (The Last Dragon Slayer) and it’s amazing.
And please, please, please read Harry Potter? Pretty please?

What perfect timing! I just wrote up and posted my review of Shadow & Bone today, so you might want to check that out. I enjoyed it, because it’s a very different fantasy series, and it’s not too hardcore fantasy (at least to me), so it shouldn’t be intimidating to read this at all!
I’m right there with you when it comes to starting the Across the Universe series (I own the first two, so I really have no excuse, I think) and Daughter of Smoke and Bone series. I’ve heard wonderful things about these two series, and I think I’d really like them.
Also, please, please, please read Cinder! I am in love with The Lunar Chronicles series, and I think that Marissa Meyer is an incredible storyteller. She takes these classic fairytales and just RUNS with them in her books – and it’s SO GOOD.
The Graceling series is FANTASTIC. I haven’t read Bitterblue yet, but I really liked Graceling and was interested in Fire. I need to reread them before Bitterblue, and hopefully I do that this year!

Oh please, please, please, please read Harry Potter. I have ALWAYS loved reading, but Harry Potter is a story I know will stick with me forever! It is probably the King of YA lit and not much that I have read since then can even top it.
Divergent is also fantastic and I am eagerly awaiting the 3rd book (stop pushing back the release date for cryin’ out loud!! 🙂 )
I just finished the Across the Universe series last night…eerrr… very early this morning while I should have been sleeping… and I wasn’t disappointed. What an interesting world!
Cinder and Graceling are on my TBR list as well. I’m currently trying to decide between starting Cinder, Where She Went, or Everyday next (so difficult!).

JASPER FFORDE YES. Okay, to be honest, it took a few years in between tries for me to really ‘get’ him, BUT DON’T LET THAT DISCOURAGE YOU. It was definitely a case of me not being in the right place at the right time. Fforde is definitely quirky and when I first tried his books I just couldn’t get into it – I was totally about SRS BOOKS at the time. A few years later I was bored and pulled the book off my shelf and fell. in. love.
I started with his Nursery Crimes series, but Thursday Next has my heart as well.

Seriously, Vampire Academy was the first YA series I read as an adult, after years of JUST sci-fi/fantasy and women’s fiction, so WHOA. First book was somewhat “meh,” but I swear, Richelle gets better with each book. By the third book, I was firmly hooked!

JAMIE, you have got to read these. Like, you have to. The only ones that I do not personally LOVE the faces off of are VA (which I do enjoy and is totally worth a read), Bright Young Things (wasn’t super impressed by the Luxe, though it was a guilty pleasure), and The Iron King (which I am in the rare group of hating). BUT read all the other things immediately. And read these too since you want to. Ahhhhh!

The Vampire Academy series was pretty fun but lost steam towards the end. And I enjoyed Anna Godbersen’s Luxe series more than Bright Young Things but it was still enjoyable. 🙂

So, if I was going to give you a list of which ones to start with first, I would definitely say Graceling and Cinder. 🙂 I still haven’t started the Iron Fey series either and my students are harassing me for not reading them yet!

Also Blood Red Road and Daughter of Smoke and Bone are on the same level for me in that they start off kinda slow-ish and then get RIDICAMAZE!

I only read the first book in Across the Universe but it was fantastic. The Vampire Academy is one of my favorite series of all time. I own the first book in Graceling but haven’t gotten to it yet unfortunately. Lunar Chronicles also made it on my list. 🙂

Cinder is AWESOME. One of my favorite series ever. The Dust Land series is on my TTT as well. Harry Potter is a must-read, but it IS a pretty daunting task if you didn’t read the series as they released. It’s a pretty hefty commitment.

Your list is beautiful Jamie!! Your visual skills on this blog are amazing, I love reading your TTT just to see what unique twist you’ll put on them! And girlfriend you gotta get moving on some of these! I’ve read most of the series on your list and they are phenomenal!! Shadow and Bone & Daughter of Smoke and Bone are just ridiculously amazing. Especially DoSaB. Graceling is so good, especially if you’re not into fantasy too much, it is a good stepping stone. The Iron Fey, so good! Don’t let the faery thing bug you because I was the SAME way and only until I just sat down and started reading them did I really finally get what everyone was talking about.
Totally agree with Vampire Academy, I think Betty is gonna have both our heads if we don’t read these soon….

I have the Thursday Next series on my list too, and while they’re not in my top ten, I also want to read the Across the Universe series and the Iron Fey series. I didn’t particularly care for Graceling, but I know I’m part of the minority where that series is concerned.
And while I can’t comment on Divergent (I only read the first book last month), I can say – “Read Harry Potter!” I know it’s a lot of books (I personally think book 5 takes the longest to get through), but they are so worth the time.

I thought I was bad st reading popular series, but you totally beat me on that one. Cinder is so good! So is Shadow and Bone. There’s an awesome love triangle in that one that I can’t wait to see your reaction on. I did not like VA at all, but it’d be really interesting to see another person’s perspective on that one.

Shadow and Bone is a great book! I just read it and really, really enjoyed it. I want to start a lot of the series you mentioned on your list too, particularly Vampire Academy and Graceling. Also? Harry Potter is great. 😀

Oh, I need to read so many of these! I adore VA though! Betty is right to force you to read that haha. Cinder is one of my favorites, mostly because it’s so completely unique and the characters are pretty badass. I’m currently reading/finishing Shadow and Bone and I love it a whole lot, but that’s because I’m a sucker for fantasy. But before you do anything else: READ DIVERGENT. Such a great, fast-paced, thrilling dystopia. And obviously, I think you should read Harry Potter, but it’s different, since I grew up with it. I hope you’ll love it, of course, but I do think our reading experiences will be different 🙂

In my first year of university, my young and enthusiastic English 101 professor assigned The Eyre Affair as an example of postmodern literature. And it was, quite honestly, the most fun I’ve ever had in a lecture. If that’s not a recommendation, I don’t know what is.

I read and loved the Seven Kingdoms series, and am currently reading Scarlet from the Lunar Chronicles. I usually like to wait until a series is finished, or nearly so, until I start it. But I have read so many great comments about Cinder that I just had to read it.
Some of the others on your list look like I should add them to my list, but it will have to wait until school gets out and I have more time to read!

The only one of these series that I’ve read is Vampire Academy, and even that was only last year. I really enjoyed it, though. Rose is bad-ass! Honestly, I’m really surprised that Harry Potter wasn’t on this list! lol

I actually just started The Iron King and am around page 83 and I am enjoying it! More then I thought I would. So I would say give it a chance soon if you can, plus I would love to see a review from you on it:) I actually looked to see if you had a review before I started it but obviously you hadn’t reviewed it as you haven’t read it yet.
As for Graceling I would say – Read ASAP! So good!

AAHHHH!! So many great series on here, Jamie!!! I’ve only just read Vampire Academy myself, so I can’t give you too much heat for that one, but I can recommend The Lunar Chronicles, Seven Kingdoms, Daughter of Smoke and Bone, Iron Fey and OMG TUESDAY NEXT hardcore. Those series are all so, so good, and so DIFFERENT! I hope you get a chance to make some time to read some of them at least!!

Oh, I’m with you on so many of these! Shadow & Bone, Across the Universe, The Lunar Chronicles, The Dust Lands Series… oh boy. We gotta get moving, girl! I definitely do recommend Kristin Cashore’s books though. I really enjoyed them 🙂

It’s nice to see I’m not the only person who hasn’t read Cinder, The Iron King, Vampire Academy or Across the Universe! I keep hearing great things and I will read them, but boy does it feel good to say I’m not the only on who hasn’t started them. 🙂

Cinder and The Iron Fey are two of my favorite series! Graceling was also great. I am with you on several of them, so this may be the year that I actually get to Shadow & Bone, Across The Universe and Daughter Of Smoke And Bone.

What great taste you have. I think every single one of these I have started or is on my list to start. I am forever raving about Graceling and Cinder was one of my Favorites from last year. The Iron King is in progress and I love her twist on the fae.
I am dying to get my hands on Shadow & Bone and Blood Red Road. For some reason every time I see The Eyre Affair I remember that I want to read it and then I forget about it again until the next time.
But of all of these if I have to pick one to tell you to read it would be Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

I’d say bump up the Iron Fey series. (And Harry Potter and Divergent. Seriously?!) It was great. The Lunar Chronicles are on my to-read list, and I’m currently reading Days of Blood & Starlight and loving that series so far. Graceling and Fire are fantastic (from the Seven Kingdoms) but I didn’t really like Bitterblue. Too creepy. The Vampire Academy is good too, but after the first few books, they just read like more of the same.
