This week’s topic: Top Ten Books Featuring Travel In Some Way
I love travel IN LIFE. If you’ve read my bio you know I’d like to be a traveling nomad (I guess I’d bring Will along with me haha). But I can’t always travel so I looooove travel in my books whether it be fiction or travelogues!
Amy & Roger’s Epic Detour by Morgan Matson: This has both all the makings of a fun road trip but it heartfelt and deals with a teen losing a parent. It’s one of my all time favorite contemporary books and definitely my fave road trip book in YA!
In Honor by Jessi Kirby: I don’t know what my deal is with road trips that somehow also deal with grief but it is what it is. I thought this one was good and loved the road trip element to it!
Just One Day by Gayle Forman: One of my all time favorite books EVER. It made me miss Paris so hard.
Wanderlove by Kirsten Hubbard: I think this book made me FEEL the travel more than any book ever. I NEED to go backpacking in South America! Seriously, the vividness and the essence of travel that Kirsten Hubbard brings makes this one of my favorite armchair vacations.
The Probability of Love at First Sight by Jennifer E. Smith: This one takes place for a while in an airport and on a plane! And it’s swoony! And then LONDON. I really enjoyed this one for something really cute and light that you’ll read in a flash!
When You Were Here by Daisy Whitney: OMG OMG this comes out TODAY SO GO BUY IT. I love this book! And the main character, Danny, travels to Japan and really I just thought it was one of the best male POVs I’ve read in a while.
Travels With Charley by John Steinbeck: This is a more quiet travelogue but I loved the reflective nature and how John Steinbeck and his dog travel across America. As much as I’m always dying for exotic locales he made me want to hit the road here in my own country!
Eat, Pray, Love by Elizabeth Gilbert: I know people either love or hate this one but I really enjoyed it and couldn’t get enough of her travel (I know, I know…she was given an advance to write this and go on the trip) but I really connected with it. I loved Italy and India the best and unfortunately got bored of Indonesia after awhile but this one definitely got me into travelogues and I think is a good start for someone who is wary of them.
Anna and the French Kiss by Stephanie Perkins: PARISSSS! I love getting to watch Anna discover the city as she is there for school.
The Summer I Turned Pretty by Jenny Han: Jenny Han knows how to show what a good summer vacation tradition looks like. There isn’t a whole lot to do with traveling but I think vacationing is a form of travel and sometimes it’s nice to just enjoy a setting you are already familiar with because it might seem to stay the same but you certainly don’t and there’s always something to discover. I think Jenny Han writes an amazing beach setting and I love it!

LOVE Statistical Probability and Anna and the French Kiss!! I really want to read Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour… It sounds SO good. And that cover is just stunning. *_*

I listened to Eat Pray Love on audiobook and ended up really disliking HER, as horrible as that sounds. But, I LOVE the idea of taking off and visiting Italy, India and Bali, though. The travel aspect of that book made it less horrible.

I know a ton of people who found her insufferable and selfish! I don’t know what this says about me but when I read this back in the day, whatever stage I was in, I reallyyyy related to her haha

I LOVED Anna and The Summer I turned Pretty! I didn’t even think of those ones! I’ve been seeing lots of The Statistical Probability (which I have but have not read!) and I’m thinking maybe I need to pick up Wanderlove? Thanks for sharing!

This is a brilliant top ten list Jamie! Wanderlove, Just One Day and Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour made it to my list too! I totally forgot to add the Summer series and Anna and the French Kiss which are two of my favourite reads ever! I will certainly have to check out the rest of your recommendations too!

I like Eat, Pray, Love for the travel aspects. I really enjoyed that book. I wouldn’t call it a favorite but I do enjoy reading travel writing and the different experiences that go along with that so…
Wanderlove would have definitely been on my list. That is my ultimate travel book.

This is a good list! Mine also has a book that encouraged me to travel through my own country. Steinbeck sounds FUN. Traveling with a dog sounds SUPER FUN.
I don’t know why Eat Pray Love did not really appeal to me. Her trip was amazing but the reading itself somehow just wasn’t fun for me. Anyway.
Just One Day will be arriving by mail for me soon. Yay!

Great List!! I loved Anna and the French Kiss. I still need to read SEVERAL of the books on your list. Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight is probably the first one I will get to. It has been moving up the TBR list for quite a while.

So many people have Wanderlove on their lists that I’m feeling an increased urgency to read it. It’s been on my TBR since it came out but my library never got a copy and I haven’t felt a strong enough urge to buy it. It’s strong enough now. I also have Just One Day and Statistical Probability on my list, but most of my choices are fantasy and sci-fi.

The Lost Girls made me want to quit my job and buy a RTW ticket immediately. I listened to Eat, Pray, Love and liked hearing about all the places she visited. Books that take place in foreign settings (ex. Memoirs of a Geisha) light the traveling fire in me as much as travel books do just because I want to visit the places the book describes. I have severe wanderlust like you though, so basically anything can induce my desire (aka NEED) to travel.

Okay, so I actually really disliked In Honor. I thought it was okay for the majority of the book, but I wasn’t in love. Until I got to the part where that guy she was traveling with was arrested even though she was the one who was at fault. And she didn’t do anything. She just let him take the rap. It pissed me off so much, I was actually near tears. I lost all respect for the girl, so now I really don’t like that book. I know a lot of people do like it, though, and I bet I’ll see it around a lot today.
I really need to read Amy and Roger. I have heard great things about that one. And I should have included Anna and the French Kiss. I wasn’t thinking about it in a travel way, but it really does fit this category. Oh well.

Yay, yay, yay!!! I just discovered When You Were Here recently -and the synopsis sounds so good! I like that it’s a male MC (and that it is well done, as you said) and it’s in Japan. I mean, what else could one wish for? I really need that book!

I so need to read Wanderlove, it seems like the perfect book for this topic, so practically every list I look at has it on, which just makes me want to read it more, haha. Amy and Roger is such a great book, I loved the road trip in it, and it was just awesome in general! 🙂

I need to pick up a copy of When You Were Here … I had no idea what it was about, but it sounds fantastic! I’ve also had a copy of The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight on my ereader FOREVER and haven’t read it yet, although I know I’ll love it. I must get to it!

You definitely mentioned some of my all-time favorite books in this post! As you know, I adore traveling. I think there’s nothing better than taking a trip, whether it’s to somewhere new or somewhere familiar, as it definitely gets you out of your comfort zone! It reminds you that the world is so large and wonderful and that there’s SO MUCH to see. So happy with all your choices!
P.S. I really, really want to read When You Were Here! I hope I pick it up soon 🙂
