What I’ve Been Reading Lately

August 4, 2016 - Updated May 7, 2019 // 18 Comments

the nest book

Holy mother of gawd how is it August already?? I CAN’T EVEN. Well then, let’s get to talking about two of the books I read in July.

First up was:

The Nest

The Nest by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney

About In A Sentence or Two: The Plumb siblings are on the verge of receiving a VERY large inheritance…until they find out their money has been used to clean up their brother’s latest and very large mess up. Privately all of them were severely relying on the prospect of this money so they get together to confront their brother about what he’s going to do to fix it.

Thoughts: Oh man, I don’t know what this says about me BUT I just really enjoy reading about family drama and dysfunctional families in fiction (also #richpeopleproblems). So this totally screamed “PICK ME UP!” and it totally delivered on those things. I mean, what’s more fun than the family eff-up making another dumb decision and being the reason you aren’t getting the HUUUUGE inheritance you all thought you were going to get and were BANKING ON — awkward family meeting ahoy. Though I didn’t feel much connection to a lot of the main characters, I adored a few and I just found all the relationship dynamics intriguing PLUS the character development throughout the novel was excellent. I loved reading about all their various lives and how this inheritance shaped the way they lived and the choices they made and how the loss of it would affect their lives. I love, love loved the ending…like so much.
He is the epitome of that Tara Banks gif from America’s Next Top Model where she was like “I WAS ROOTING FOR YOU. WE WERE ROOTING FOR YOU.” Like, getting to read from his POV we know that he did TRY, despite his cockiness and overconfidence and giving up when it got hard, but he is so that person in your family who just unfortunately you feel like will never change and you just learn not to rely on them. But I was rooting for him to make it up to his family and actually become a decent human being. But alas, real life. Some people just never do.
Anyways, it was a quick and absorbing read for me but I don’t feel like it completely WOWED me like all the hype led me to believe.

Then I read:

This Savage Song review

This Savage Song by Victoria Schwab

About In A Sentence Or Two: Verity is a city overrun with monsters, born out of violent and dark acts, and is divided by two leaders — one who lets the monsters run free and makes people pay to be protected and one who is trying to keep people safe. Kate and August are the heirs of these men respectively. On opposite sides of this war, they are thrown together when August is given a chance to help the effort and spy on Kate at school but things quickly go awry.

Thoughts: This was my first Victoria Schwab book so yay for losing that author virginity (especially embarrassing since I own most of them). I’m not going to lie — I felt VERY confused regarding the world with this one in the beginning. VERY confused. I’m like I DO NOT GET THIS WORLD WHAT IS HAPPENING but then it started to be pieced together and then I pretty much got enough of it. But that aside — what a unique urban fantasy novel! After I finished it I was like….”man, I’ve never read anything quite like that!” I loved the idea that monsters were born out of the evil and dark acts of the world + turf wars between two very different leaders in one city.  There was a perfect amount of important character development where I really got a sense of who these characters were and what motivated them in the depths of their hearts and also a pulse-pounding plot that moved it all forward. I loved August and Kate and their stories definitely tugged at me — the girl who just wants to be loved and accepted by her father and the monster who just wants to be a human.  So many beautiful themes pulsing through this dark and lovely novel. Cannot wait for the conclusion and to read more of Victoria’s books!

The Nest sounds interesting, but not sure it’s up my alley. And ohmygosh I’ve been hearing so much good things about This Savage Song! I finally gave in and ordered it on Amazon. I can’t wait to read it!

I loved The Nest! And I just think the cover is such a pretty colour 🙂 For some reason I am very attracted to #richpeopleproblems books – probably the same way that I just love Gossip Girl even though everyone in it is kind of the worst? My favourite thing about it was definitely the New-York-iness of it – so many books are set in the city but this felt like one of the few where it really couldn’t have been set anywhere else without losing something.

SAME. I love #richpeopleproblem books! And yeppp totally was in love with Gossip Girl back in the day….total rich people probs! haha And YES “the New York-iness” of it…..I loved that too! I hadn’t thought about how it might lose something not being set there but I think you are super right on that!

I got This Savage Song in a subscription box. It’s not at all something I would pick up for myself and I LOVED it. It was such a well crafted story. I was a little confused at the beginning too and I think that may have been deliberate on the author’s part because once she wanted us to know it became very clear.
One of the things I liked best about it was that there wasn’t a romance and I didn’t even notice until the book was over. August and Kate were so well defined. I will be reading the second one for sure!

I want to read Vicious before I read any of Victoria Schwab’s books, but I really do want to pick up The Nest! I checked it out from the library and it was due before I could pick it up. I might check it out again!

This Savage Song sounds really interesting. The whole, “this new world confuses me” happened to me at the beginning of The Lunar Chronicles, but I adjusted pretty quick. This Savage Song sounds unique!

I got THE NEST out from the library and was going to pick it up last week, but I had just finished another ~family drama~ story so I didn’t want to go back-to-back. I unfortunately need to return it now but hopefully I can pick it up again sometime soon! I always think hype can be hit or miss on those books, so I’m glad you enjoyed it despite the hype/expectations. It’s weird when huge bestselling books like that get rave reviews but have like a 3.5 on Goodreads hahah. It makes you wonder who really feels which way… if that even makes sense lol

i have not read either of these yet! i am not sure if i would like the nest, but the victoria book is on my list. i am always nervous about reading a new to me author when they are SO popular. i get really cranky when i don’t understand anything in a new book world, because i feel like i don’t retain it, you know? but i know why they do it, it’s not like they can do an introduction to this world at the start or whatever, and i also kind of hate when they overuse a character who doesn’t know anything in order to teach us.. you know? so basically you can’ t please me and i will complain either way 😉

Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technic Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technically ATMOSPHERE but I feel like between my stories and my dedicated post to it, I’d rather talk about the book I read before it but didn’t update y’all on.

The Trouble With Anna — I enjoyed this delightful little historical romance about a heroine who is carving out her independence only to find out, when her grandfather dies, that he tied her inheritance/future to marrying her best friend’s brother — a not-so-happy surprise for both of them. I could understand why they both had some guardness/walls up and I enjoyed watching them slowly start to lower them.

Mayhem and the Mortal - I’m not too far into this romantic fantasy but it is one of my most anticipated that came out last month and I’m excited to dig in more.

Hamnet — I know, I know. For April I decided not to make a traditional TBR list of books I wanted to read but instead give myself some prompts to guide my reading (bc I’m overwhelmed with all my choices at hand) without feeling rigid. One of the prompts was to read a book I HAD TO BUY but is still unread. So going to finally get to it. Have you read this one or watched the movie?

What are you currently reading?
I had been waiting for the perfect time to read th I had been waiting for the perfect time to read this one after Random House sent me a finished copy as TJR is a longtime auto-buy author. I found myself caught up in all the space joy and wonder and feeling quite parasocial about the Artemis crew...I decided now was the time.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

I hadn’t really known what it was about but I didn’t really need to given its TJR & the fact it was 1980s NASA & astronauts.

But this book was about love to me - romantic love, platonic love, familial love, love for something bigger than yourself, love for the person you are & are becoming, love in the face of obstacles, love for what lights you up.

Having been invested in real life astronauts & their journey lately really made this book even more vivid to me — seeing the bonds of the crew so deeply, feeling the fragility that exists while they are doing this wondrous & crazy thing that often still boggles my mind that we can do.

And, hardest to put into words, that feeling of awe in the expansive nature & capabilities of love & the universe that I felt when a husband named a crater after his late wife which doubly helped me understand how Joan & Vanessa felt looking back at earth.

It made me sob & feel everything about being a human so deeply basically from that Frances/Joan phone call at 86% of the way through until the final words. Like could not breathe.

*might be a tiny bit spoilery so beware:

I think the way she wrote this was so impactful bc we start out knowing something bad happens &it’s not even that far when we know that some of them def won’t make it back & some are alive in peril.

I was like “oof” when *it* happens early on. But each and every chapter where we learn more about these ppl & their relationships felt agonizing & I was retroactively grieving for them more deeply every turn of the page.

The hurt and grief just compounds from a moment that was sad from the jump to something that had dug in deep to me.

To know what happens right before this mission makes the mission control bits even more excruciating. Makes the peril a character is in hit even harder than just “oh that must be scary!”.

I loved it. I needed it bad.
The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being m The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being my reading whims, quirks and troubles.

Interesting things:

1. January started out rough. I only read 1 physical book and leaned very heavy into audiobooks only. At first it was distressing that my brain -thanks to current events and their effect on my mind - couldn’t work out how to sit down and read with my eyeballs but I was like…let’s just roll with it and wait for it to pass. So I waited and enjoyed a ton of audiobooks.

2. I don’t think I’ve ever read so many thrillers and mysteries in a quarter. It’s a genre I love but I’m normally quite more balanced. However, it’s what I was craving and what my brain was tolerating so…I just went with it.

3. I have always been a reader led by my moods (both how I feel reading wise and personally). This quarter was FERAL. Like the most feral mood reading ever. I couldn’t even categorize it. I’d decide on one book enthusiastically and suddenly I was like…absolutely not that.

4. I read way less fantasy than normal which was WEIRD but I felt like I also wasn’t surprised given my brain space.

5. I really started to resent people even more who said “it’s a book account stop talking about politics etc”. Babe, I’m a human who gives a shit but ALSO this has and always been an account of MY reading life. And my reading life was profoundly affected by the things that were going on in this country. Like they have been before - whether it’s been current events or things like having a kid, being depressed, slumps, etc.

6. I return to the fact that, for me, I am happiest when I pay attention to my reading whims. The end of the month I had a very specific reading mood (wanted time travel element but not a heavy time travel book) and I decided to pick up A Rip Through Time at the end of the month and I’m now halfway through book 4. Having the best time ever!!!

Anyways, tell me how your reading life was in Q1! Fave books? Biggest surprises??

I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first try when trying to satisfy a super specific reading mood - Kelley Armstrong’s A Rip Through Time definitely nailed what I wanted. Time travel but didn’t really want too time travely…just more of a vibe or catalyst for some fun. If you love a good mystery, some time travel shenanigans and a great cast of characters, I highly recommend this book. #bookrec #bookrecommendation #bookreview #mysterybooks #historicalmystery #kelleyarmstrong
🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸 🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸

Beyond excited for a new Kate Clayborn, Kasie west, rainbow Rowell, Jenn Bennett and Beth O’Leary - I’ve enjoyed these authors in the past.

My historical loving heart is most excited for The Duke and How To Fake It In Society.

I love an emotional romance so The Art of Loving You is high on my list plus I’ve heard great things about this author.

I’m intrigued by Fast Lane especially since it’s being adapted for a tv series. I’m seeing comparisons to Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus series which I did love!
