While I couldn’t spend the whole week at BEA (more deets on the time I DID spend there later!), I was more than thrilled that Elizabeth Norris (author of Unraveling), Aprilynne Pike (author of Destined
– Wings series) and Bethany Griffin (author of Masque of the Red Death
) were coming to my area! It helped heal my wounded heart from seeing all the BEA tweets this week plus I got to see one of my fave local bloggers — Jena of Shortie Says. The ladies showed up and were super friendly & awesome — even after spending the whole day AT the Book Expo.. and I know how insanely tired you are after one day on the floor of BEA. The kind of tired where you might even pay a stranger to carry you piggyback off the floor.
The ladies gave us the deets on their books and answered some questions and then were so lovely and signed our books, chatted and took pictures with fans. The highlights for me:
– On future books: Aprilynne has two books coming out next year — one is the start of a new series about a fallen goddess and one is a standalone. The standalone is kinda sorta based on The Scarlet Pimpernel which I am REALLY intrigued about. Elizabeth has a standalone coming out and the sequel to Unraveling which is called Unbreakable! Bethany is working on the sequel to Masque.
– On the road to publication: They each had a different story but all three really endured some rejection and had to really reevaluate what they were doing. Liz’s story was fascinating because after rejection at a writing conference she joined a writing group and someone in the group read the story and really loved it and that person told an agent and then BING BANG BOOM..she was in!
– On inspiration for books: They all had interesting inspirations but I loved Aprilynne’s! As a kid she had a big storybook that had paintings of fairies who lived in flowers and she was OBSESSED with them…thus her faerie love!
Interview Portion
Then I had the privilege to have a quick & fun interview with these fabulous ladies. We started it off with a riveting two rounds of Kiss, Marry, Kill and then dove into some questions!
Finnick, Gale Peeta (totally stole this one from Jenny Han at the S&S party!)
Elizabeth: Kiss Peeta, Marry Gale, Kill Finnick
Aprilynne: Kiss Gale, Marry Peeta, Kill Finnick
Bethany: Kiss Gale, Marry Peeta, Kill Finnick
You guys, I’m appalled at the amount of Finnick slaying!
From Their Own Books
Elizabeth: Kiss Taylor Barclay, Marry Ben, Kill Elijah
Aprilynne: Kiss Shar, Marry Tamani, Kill Barnes
Bethany: Kiss Elliiott, Marry Will & Kill the Prince
Pick A Theme Song For Your Book:
Elizabeth: We Are Broken by Paramore
Aprilynne: No Good Deed from the play Wicked
Bethany: Machine Gun by Portishead
How do you balance your LIFE and writing?
Elizabeth: Says she doesn’t get enough sleep. Hasn’t quite gotten the hang of the whole balance thing. She also stays in a lot more than ever before.
Aprilynne: She watches less tv. She also uses cooking to relax her and provide balance because she loves doing it.
Bethany: “Balance. What’s that?”
Describe Your Book In 6 Words Or Less:
Elizabeth: Roswell meets Fringe
Aprilynne: Faeries: Nothing like the storybooks say.
Bethany: Desire is contagious.
If you could mash up any two books/tv shows/or movies what would they be?
Elizabeth: Gossip Girl meets a YA Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (DO THAT. I’d read it!!!)
Aprilynne: Night Spell by Leah Cypress meets Maze Runner…but with MORE KISSING.
Bethany: She passed and I totally don’t hold that against her after the crazy busy day she had!
Thank you ladies for being so incredibly sweet and answering my questions –even though I’m sure you guys wanted to head back to your hotel and CRASH after the day you’d had!
