1. Will and I got a dog!!!:  If you read last month’s recap or this post you know we had been looking to rescue a dog and some things fell through but OMG WE GOT A DOG AND HE IS PERFECT. His name is Finnikin (named from Finnikin of the Rock, Finn for short) and he’s so great — he’s fun and loves to play but also he is literally your perfect dog to nap next to you while you watch 7 hours of Game of Thrones (I’m not proud that happened. It was necessary though).

11960145_669988112992_7653675149767463257_n

2. I barely read or blogged this month — No really, I read 2 books (plus parts of a dog book lol) which is the smallest amount I’ve read in a month in the past 5-6 years. And I’ve been pretty sparse here. It was half the fact we got Finn and we’ve been spending time with him and also half my binge watching seasons 2/3/most of 4 of Game of Thrones. I tried to blame my MIA-ness on solely the dog but I’m like lols okay maybe at first that was it but then the rest of the month the dog was my GoT watching buddy. I’m honestly happy I took some time off blogging and just the book community in general. I’m not a person who has to blog every day and I frequently take days off when I don’t feel like it but I don’t know…it was just a much needed break.

3. We took a trip up to my dad’s house that didn’t go so well: Finn LOVES other dogs — dogs at the dog park and dogs we see walking at our apartment complex or the walking trail we like so we didn’t think we’d have any issues with my dad’s new pup. BUUUUT they hated each other from the first second and it didn’t get any better so we ended up leaving early because it was so stressful to work to keep these dogs away from each other because they were going to kill each other. Was really bummed because I wanted to spend time up there but just too stressful and I didn’t want anyone to get hurt.

4. My stepdad got remarried– It was a really hard day (because of how we feel about her which is super complicated and also because it was just another reminder my mom is not alive…and her birthday fell on the wedding weekend) but we were supportive and tried to put on good faces (okay so some day drinking happened before the wedding to survive). The reception was really fun though and it was SOOOO nice to see family and family friends we hadn’t seen in a while.

5. I started to try running again but HAHAHA: I took Finn with me a couple times but mostly it was a fail. I really need to start running again because I’m doing a 5K on Thanksgiving and HAVE to do better than last time!! I’m suuuuch a self conscious runner which is part of the problem. The other problem is just that I hate running.

I only actually READ 2 books this month so I’ll just share what I read!

The Status Of All ThingsAll The Light We Cannot See

1. The Status Of All Things by Liz Fenton: Liked this one — interesting look at social media and also marriage!
2. All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr:
This was as good as everyone said it was!!!

Queen of Shadows Sarah J. Maas

My spoiler-tastic (all spoilers are marked so have no fears!) discussion of one of my most anticipated books — Queen of Shadows!

I loved this sentence so much. NEW MANTRA.

Heh well since I didn’t blog very much this month I didn’t have that much going on but here are a few good posts:

1. Exciting Thing Is Exciting — My Finn story!!

2. Ten series I need to finish: This was fun to go through my series that I need to finish (which is a lot because I’m awful at finishing series) and I LOVED your feedback about which ones I definitely should get to.

3. Ten Quotes I Loved From Books I Read This Year: Yay quotes!

4. Books To Read If You Like These Super Popular Books/Authors: Nice to give maybe less well known readalikes for popular books!

5. Books I’m Planning To Read This Fall : My Fall TBR has not gone so well clearly with only reading 2 books this month!

1. Why Snapchat Matters – I have been loooooving Snapchat so much in these past couple months! Such a fun way to add content in a VERY different way than other places I am on the interwebs. A more behind the scenes way where I don’t have to proofread or use a filter or have a perfect picture or even feel pressured to do ANYTHING other than add stuff. SO STRESS FREE. I’m brokeandbookish if you are on there.

2. Let’s Stop Pretending It’s “SO EASY” To Be Healthy: Love this!! I would say I eat healthy about 80% of the time and I *try* to work out and be active but it is a struggle every day. Not easy but worth it. I just wanted to slow clap reading this.

3. No Regrets: I read this in the midst of my lack of blogging this month and I was like YEP this is exactly how I feel. NO REGRETS. I love blogging but sometimes I push myself to devote more time to it than I truly know I want to. It’s not like I FEEL like I have to but sometimes I feel this pressure, in addition to writing posts and stuff, like I have to reply to ALL the things and I have to comment on other blogs or keep up enough on Twitter or people will think I’m rude. I’m not. AT ALL. I want to community-oriented and appreciative to my readers…but I also want to have a life outside this computer and this online world. It’s a hard balance to find for me — being part of the community in the way that I want to but also not spending MORE time than I want to devote to this. It’s only a sliver of my life and sometimes I think I give it too much of my time. I’ve definitely reevaluated my Twitter usage and I have zero regrets about spending less time. Just need to find a time allotment to this hobby that makes me happy and makes me have NO REGRETS.

4. How To Love Your Work….Even When You Don’t Love Your Work: I feel like I have struggled with this a lot so definitely keeping these tips!

5. Why Experience Still Matters: Found this really interesting and mirroring some of my own thoughts lately.

mr8

1. GAMES OF THRONES: I know that was my obsession last month but I had only watched the first season. This month I watched the second, third and more than half of the fourth (I’m on episode 8 in that season right now) sooooo the obsession is real right now. I am devastated about some things that happened and OMG THE RED WEDDING WHY DID SOMEBODY NOT WARN ME I WOULD NEVER BE THE SAME AFTER THAT. Some of my faves: my Khaleesi, Tyrion, Arya and Jon Snow! Pretty much love all the Starks though! SO HAPPY THAT A CERTAIN AWFUL CHARACTER IS DEAD NOW THO. LOLS ALL AROUND.
2. PUMPKIN PIE COOKIE BUTTER FROM TRADER JOE’S– Oh my god you have no idea! I love the regular
 IMG_85740
3. My sister’s new puppy: Really I am just obsessed with ALL OF THE DOGS (my own very much included) but my sister’s puppy is just darling. Speaking of dogs I’ve been looking at volunteer options at the local rescue.

1. My birthday: Soooo I am half looking forward to it and half not. I’m turning 30. I’m having a slight breakdown about this even though logically I know it’s just a number but OMG I AM GOING TO BE 30. I feel like I enjoyed my 20’s as up and down as they were. I KNOW 30 IS NOT OLD BUT I ALWAYS THOUGHT WHEN I WAS 30 I WOULD BE A LEGIT ADULT.

 2. FALL THINGS: As much as I cry every time summer ends, Fall is my 2nd favorite season and I love all the things about fall minus the dropping temperatures.
3. New Børns album: Very very excited for their new album!!

mr12

What’s your favorite thing about Fall? Also, do you like to read certain types of books or *a* certain book in the fall?

lets-talk

Pick a category (or 5… or all of them) and tell me what went on in YOUR life this month!! What sort of things were noteworthy for you this month? New obsessions? Any new song recs?? Best books you read this month? Great posts I missed on your blog? Answer to my question of the month?

I have the same thing with running. Every time I plan to do it, but I dislike it and I feel awkward running around.. I have a feeling everyone looks at me like ‘haaahahaha, look at that!’ I’m not a big fan of dogs, but Finn sounds like a cutie! I’ve only read 4 books this month and I don’t know how that happened.. I got Snapchat and I’m SO confused. I had an account a long time ago and it’s all new now. I don’t get it, I feel old, haha.

I think my running issue comes from my family making fun of how I run since I was younger (apparently I run like my dad and we kick our legs out funny) and so I feel always so self conscious about it. I shouldn’t care bc WHATEVER but ughhh I can’t get out of my head when I run haha

Omg Snapchat confused me soooo much when I got it!! I felt SO old!

AHHHHH I love cookie butter, but it has to be imported here and so it ends up being around $10 (NZD) a jar. Which seems a bit excessive for a spread, but it’s so delicious. In saying that I have no idea how much it costs there so it may be just as bad haha. I wonder if I can get this pumpkin one because it sounds amazing!

I bawl my eyes out every time I watch the red wedding. Although just wait for the season five finale and you might wonder how you’ll ever survive… Although you’ve probably seen spoilers for that.

OMG I AM SO SCARED NOW HAHAHA. I HAVE NOT SEEN SPOILERS. WAHHH. Idk what could be worse than the red wedding. IDK IF I WANT TO KNOW

I’m with you – I always envisioned turning 30 as a major turning point and that moment when I’d really be an adult and I half-dreaded it. Now that I’m 33, I think I still act like I’m in my 20s and being in my 30s hasn’t affected me all that much. Ha ha. It was almost disappointing in a way? Why is aging so weird?!

AGING IS SOOOOO WEIRD. For a certain time I just couldn’t wait to get older. Like turning 20 I was like yeaaaaay let’s get to these ages. But now I’m like NO NO STOP GETTING OLDER. WHY CAN’T I STAY IN MY 20’S FOR A LITTLE WHILE LONGER. I don’t FEEL 30 at all. I feel like I’m still a 20 something trying to figure my shit out.

What a great picture of you and Will!

We all seemed to have a difficult time in September — in blogging or reading or both. You’re not alone on that! Also, congrats on running again, even if it felt like a fail. You’re miles ahead of most people. Now that summer’s gone (yippee!), I’m thinking about running again. It’s just easier to me to run in cooler weather. It doesn’t quite feel like death by the end of it.

“What I’ve Been Up To On Youtube: NOTHING.” LOLOLOLOL ‘I WAS ON A BLOGGING VACATION OKAY GEEZ’ 😉

What IS a legit adult, though? Growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.

It’s hard to pick one thing I love about fall — because I love all of it — but I think what I’m most excited about are 1) the smells (leaves, campfires, combining the two to make burning leaves) and 2) my wardrobe. HA. Seriously, though, my entire wardrobe is only good for one season.

    Hope you’re well!

I’m glad it’s not just me that’s having a rough time reading or blogging! So out of the loop I didn’t know others were either!!

Seriously…maybe there was always this whole illusion of ~becoming an adult~ when we were younger and then now it’s here….it’s just not quite what we though. IDK. I still feel like I could be in my early 20’s except smarter than I was then haha

YAS THE SMELLS. FALL SMELLS ARE GREAT. And yes Fall clothes are pretty wonderful. Layers and boots and cute sweaters.

If it makes you feel better, I turned 35 in September and it was a bit hard! I also thought I’d be more of an adult or something, but I really don’t feel like I am one or like I want to be even? Oh dear, I just don’t know!
I like early fall because it gets cooler but it’s not cold and the pretty leaves and all that, but I’m not keen on the days being shorter at all!
I read a bit more than you did, but not really all that much at all either… I’m doing better in October already but mostly because I’m on vacation!

YAY for Finn! I hope we’ll get to see loads of pics of the puppy, he looks sooooo adorableeee! And your sister’s? SUCH A FLUFFY CUTIEEEE!!

Love the photo of you and Will – it’s adorable! 🙂 And Finn is so cute!

I’ve been saying for years that I must start running but I detest running with a passion. Maybe one day I will, but I doubt it. I am trying to get fitter though so I’ve been looking at workout videos on Youtube, specifically the Blogilates ones, and I’m hoping to stick to that! Good luck with the running! 🙂

I don’t really like Autumn or Winter, the warmer seasons are my favorite – I NEED heat and sunshine in my life which I’m not going to get much of now as we’ve just moved to England from South Africa! >.< But I'm trying to enjoy all the seasons so I'd say I LOVE the vibrant colours of fall and I also love settling in front of a fireplace with a good book on cold nights. That's the best part of the cold months! 🙂 I like reading fantasy/thrillers/dystopias in winter/autumn, it just feels right, you know?! I’m definitely reading the Harry Potter books this Autumn!

⁣
I managed to pick my next read, as chronicled in these photos, but it was not easy with so many options!

Decided to go with a most anticipated book of 2022 for me from an author who has written books I’ve really enjoyed.
⁣
I am about halfway through and cruising along because I NEED to figure out if Joseph is the worst or what really is going on here in this story that starts with 3 women being stood up by the same guy on Valentine’s Day. I feel like there is something more to this one but I can’t quite put my finger on it yet! ⁣
⁣
Hoping to finish it this weekend! What are you reading this weekend? And do you have trouble picking your next read? How do you choose amongst all the options?
Sunshine on my face and a mass market fitting perf Sunshine on my face and a mass market fitting perfectly in my hands.⁣…
⁣
Truly felt like there were zero things more joyful than the warm sun on my face after colder, dreary days and remembering how much I love the feel of reading a mass market paperback. It’s probably a very specific little joy of mine and I definitely reveled in it today.⁣
⁣
But the real big joy has been rereading this book and experiencing it all over again before @bridgertonnetflix season 2 — especially the Pall Mall scene. And something to do with a 🐝 😅 iykyk⁣
⁣
With all the joy I’m getting out of this reread it makes me wonder why I don’t prioritize rereading like I used to before I started blogging 10 years ago.⁣
⁣
In my head I just want to experience all the new stories and try to make a dent in my TBR but I forget, until I do it, the genuine pleasure in revisiting old companions and how it’s a different side of reading one can experience — the nostalgia, the person I’ve become since reading the book and the way I approach a book already knowing what happens. Well the general sense of what happens because my memory is 💩!⁣
⁣
Anyways that’s what I’m up to currently. Trying to finish this up so I can pack my books for a short trip I’m going on later this week. My first ✈️ since 2019!⁣
⁣
Whatcha reading? Do you reread often? And tell me a little teeny tiny joy from your day.
If I was a person who made Reels I would somehow m If I was a person who made Reels I would somehow mash up the “screaming, crying” Blank Space clip with the “emotional damage” refrain to the Bastille’s Pompeii to let you know how I feel after the last few chapters of #TheGildedCage !!⁣
⁣
And if you don’t understand what that means, I’m sorry 😅⁣
⁣
But woo boy do I need the third installment of this series!!! But I also think I’m going to be even more emotional damaged after that one soooo.⁣
⁣
Seriously, one of the best simple joys of my life is the feeling of being so wholly and totally invested in a series that you have to remind yourself it’s fiction lest you spend all day in bed crying about the devastated look a character had on their face — a face you didn’t even see with your own two eyes but you are so invested that you feel nauseous and gutted like you sure did.⁣
⁣
Just me orrrrrr?⁣
⁣
No but for real. If you love YA fantasy, go start #theprisonhealer so you can be caught up when The Blood Traitor comes out in June (and be my emotional support person for the duration of reading it). I love these characters and I dying to see what happens next.

Have you read this series yet? Last book series that had you SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP because of the EMOTIONAL DAMAGE it inflicted?

But y’all Black Cake is so good!! I’m almost halfway through and I know it’s A Choice to declare it one of the best books I’ve read all year but I’m feeling bold based on how it’s going.⁣
⁣
I love a good family story (especially one with a family secret!) and this is top notch. The writing is 👌🏻 and I know I’m going to be screaming when the pieces come together!⁣
⁣
In other news, I’m 65% of the way through The Dry by Jane Harper and I’m enjoying it so much that I ended up staying on the treadmill twice this weekend after my allotted time was over just so I could keep listening.⁣
⁣
Will and I FINALLY started Ted Lasso this weekend. It is a damn delight!! For all the hype and praise, it has overdelivered for me which is kind of shocking because normally hype is scary. I told Will that I feel like all the praise hasn’t even come close to how much I could love it. We are only 7 episodes in so no spoilers!⁣
⁣
I’m kinda mad we sat on starting it for so long but at the same time I think the timing is right to help me see my way out of this February funk I have found myself in the past couple weeks.⁣
⁣
Anyways, hope everyone is having a good weekend! Have you read Black Cake or The Dry? Where are my Ted Lasso fans at? I’m happy to join your ranks! Also please tell me your fave character bc I am finding it impossible to pick this far!

Either way, after loving Jennifer E. Smith's YA books for years, it's been a real treat to also read her debut picture book with Riley (we loved!!) as well as her adult debut out in 3 weeks!⁣
⁣
⁣So let me tell you about that adult debut — The Unsinkable Great James!!

This one just was the perfect warm-hearted read for a cold and gloomy January.

A perfect setting to escape into (Alaska), a tender-hearted meet cute and a poignant look at the shared grieving experience of those left behind.

I was initially drawn, like I always am, to the daughter losing a mother storyline and an exploration of that grief but I was so taken by the father/daughter relationship between two people who were left untethered by losing the person who held their family together.

Greta and her father don't see eye-to-eye on basically anything when they are thrown together on this Alaskan cruise, a trip Greta's father and mother were supposed to take, and you can feel the tension of their long-standing tumultuous and fractured relationship -- a relationship that feels like its hanging in a balance and could not recover.

The two are both hurting so much from this loss and it took my breath away at times in how true it rang to be in your own grief bubble and feeling like the loss is yours and yours alone while forgetting about the others shouldering their own piece of this loss. I loved watching them very slowly SEE one another.

I can't say enough good things about this one -- great setting, Greta's music, the meet-cute, the messy and imperfect nature of family and love. Definitely recommend!⁣
I was on a hot reading streak and now for the past I was on a hot reading streak and now for the past few days I get all cozy in bed to read at night and am asleep by 4 pages in. Will got a kick out of waking up to me basically spooning my kindle. Ebbs and flows, y’all.⁣
⁣
Let’s do a little reading update with an edition of Last, Current & Next.⁣
⁣
Last - The Girl With the Louding Voice: Adunni is by far one of the most memorable voices I’ve read in a book in a very long time. Her hope and resilience in the face of some awful situations kept me turning the pages and rooting for her. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally read it. Highly recommend!⁣
⁣
Now - Deep in Providence (thank you @fiercereads ): I’m about halfway through after I carved out some time to read early this morning and I’m enjoying this story of grief, love and magic. I’m nervous about these girls trying to resurrect their dead friend though! When I put it down today I was getting a little creeped by some things happening.⁣
⁣
Next - The Kiss of Deception: I’m rereading the first book in this YA fantasy series because it’s been forever and I really wanna finish the trilogy. I’ve been really wanting to go through series I’ve left unfinished for years (not for lack of interest but because I suck at juggling all the series I start) so this is one of them. I remember loving it so I’m excited to dive in and binge.

Whatcha reading? Have you read any of these? Anyone else on the struggle train with reading at night right now?
Braved the downpour to get my library holds. I hop Braved the downpour to get my library holds. I hope they are worth it! Please tell me they are!⁣
⁣
This is also, before I get to the stack, an appreciation post for my tiny library and wonderful librarians.⁣
⁣
They normally open at 9am during the week —except Fridays. Did I remember that? Nope. So I was I was SO proud of Riley and I for getting our butts in gear to be for around opening time to drop off a stack and get my new ones.⁣
⁣
And alas, I go to open the door and it’s locked. Now I’m holding Riley’s hand, two tote bags full of books, an umbrella that I’m trying to keep over the both of us, mind you. I’m thoroughly confused until it hits me that it’s Friday.⁣
⁣
So I’m like, welp, guess we are just dropping off in the bin so I try to grab my books out and put them in one-handed while juggling the umbrella and less than enthused Riley.⁣
⁣
Mercifully the door opens and our children’s librarian takes pity on us and lets us in to drop off and pick up the holds.⁣
⁣
Is this what being a VIP as a celebrity feels like?? Sure feels like it to me 😆 for real though, it pays to be a regular and have a cute kid in tow who is being pelted with rain.⁣
⁣
Anyways excited about this stack but especially Wahala, Daughter of the Moon Goddess and How High We Go In The Dark the most.⁣
⁣
Also have been meaning to snag The World Gives Way after @jordys.book.club recommendation!⁣
⁣
Have you read any of these? Any that you think were definitely worth the rain-soaked journey for??⁣
⁣
Alright now I’m off to curl up and read on this rainy, dreary day which is really what I think a day like this is meant for.

More about Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

Looking for something?

“Why is it so hard to pick my next read?” — “Why is it so hard to pick my next read?” — she says as she is surrounded by piles on piles of books on the floor and desk and packed on her bookshelf and book cart. (Partner @berkleypub - thanks for the review copy).⁣

A real life reading photo because I couldn’t be A real life reading photo because I couldn’t be bothered to make it pretty — mismatching fuzzy sucks, coffee almost gone and Christmas pajama pants that are super old.⁣
⁣
No but seriously every year I contemplate organizi No but seriously every year I contemplate organizing a search party for one Katjay Millay who wrote one beautiful and amazing book and then...vanished.

Like for real. She wrote a tweet in 2015 that she was taking a few weeks off and then.... no tweets, no new books. Radio silence.

I hope she’s okay, for real, and that she knows I obsessively stalk Goodreads/Twitter/the internet to make sure I haven’t missed new book news from her at least twice a year. 🥺

Is there any author who you’ve been waiting forever for a new release from??

I’d also like to add YA author Sarah Ockler to this list! Last release was 2015 😭😭

The Sky is Everywhere — it’s out today on AppleTV+ and I can’t wait to sob my brains out. One of my absolute most favorite books ever by one of my all time favorite authors. It’s gorgeous and heartbreaking in its poignant depiction of grief, first love and healing — all woven together in Jandy’s signature gorgeous, lyrical writing.⁣
⁣
Along For The Ride (out April 22) — one of a handful upcoming @sdessen books being adapted in the near future and I can’t wait! These books are so near and dear to my heart.⁣
⁣
No release dates yet for The Summer I Turned Pretty tv series (the ultimate coming of age summertime story!) or The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight (the cutest meet cute of all meet cutes all set in 24 hours) but I am HYPED and have all my fingers crossed for 2022 🤞🤞

Have you read any of these? Anyone else hyped for these adaptations.

Also, for the past few years, I’ve kept a running list of books becoming movies/tv shows for the year. Head to my bio to check out the list! I try to update it weekly and keep on top of it all but life ya know 😆 but I try!

⁣
