2019 Most Anticipated Adult Fiction Books (For The First Half Of The Year)

It’s that TIME, y’all. My favorite posts to write every single year — that time of year I scour all the books coming out in 2019 and narrow it down to give you my most anticipated books of 2019. And then fret about how many sound so ridiculously good and this list could have been double that and OH MY GOD I AM NEVER GOING TO HAVE TIME TO READ ALL THESE 2019 BOOKS!!

So if you are also looking for a list of books coming out in 2019 to add to your own 2019 reading list, you’ve come to the absolute right place, my friend.

Buckle up, I will warn you that, like every year’s, my most anticipated books of 2019 list is MASSIVE — 48 books. And this is only the must read 2019 books for THE FIRST HALF OF THE YEAR for adult fiction only. 1) I still have my YA list for the first half of the year (be sure to subscribe to my newsletter to get a heads up when that is up) 2) I still have MY SECOND HALF OF THE YEAR lists and 3) there were totally some books that made THIS list but I had to cut them which was so hard.

My Most Anticipated Books For 2019

(January – mid-June)

An Anonymous Girl by Greer Hendriks & Sarah Pekkanen  — Out January 8

For extra cash Jessica responds to an ad to participate in a psychological study on ethics and morality. She thinks it will be quick and easy but soon it starts to become more invasive and intense and he starts controlling parts of her life. She really starts to distrust this study when she feels like he knows what she is thinking and is manipulating her — making her not to know what to believe in her own life.

This one has been hyped beyond BELIEF but the premise is fantastic and I really enjoyed The Wife Between Us! I’ve been really amped for thrillers and this one is definitely the top of my list of new thrillers for 2019.

An Orchestra of Minorities by Chigozie Obioma  — Out January 8

A Nigerian poultry farmers life is set off course when he sacrifices EVERYTHING and goes to extreme lengths to win the woman he loves…only to find out that things might not have been what he thought and now he’s so far from the life he dreamed of.

Apparently this one is a contemporary twist on the Odyssey! It sounds really good and want to know EVERYTHING about this woman and what she is up to.

The Au Pair by Emma Rous — Out January 8

Within hours of twins Seraphine and Danny being born, their mother threw herself of a cliff, the au pair fled and rumors flew in their town. Now an adult, Seraphine finds a shocking photo while cleaning out her now deceased dad’s belongings that shows her happy mom, her dad and ONE baby boy. The photo causes her to question everything and seek the one person who knows what happened.

WOO BOY. All sorts of things going through my head of where this book could go. I love a good earth-shattering revelation and family secrets (only in fiction of course…I don’t need any shocking family secrets in my life).

Unmarriageable by Soniah Kamal — Out January 22

A retelling of Pride & Prejudice set in Pakistan.

I will always be a sucker for a modern day Pride & Prejudice retelling and you can bet it’s at the top of my list of new books in 2019 that I absolutely am going to devour once it’s released.

The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon — Out February 26th

A feminist epic fantasy about a divided world with a Queendom without an heir and an ancient enemy threatens them all.

It’s going to take me approximately 50 years to read this book because it is MAMMOTH but I’m still excited about it. When I read fantasy it’s normally YA fantasy (which I LOVE) so it’s pretty special to have an adult fantasy on my must read books coming out in 2019! I’m finally dipping my toes into more adult fantasy.

The Huntress by Kate Quinn — Out February 26

“A historical novel about a battle-haunted English journalist and a Russian female bomber pilot who join forces to track the Huntress, a Nazi war criminal gone to ground in America.”

I mean, hunting down elusive Nazis sounds like an intriguing premise to me! I always find myself reading many WWII books and I’ve been gravitating to ones that happen just after the war lately!

Black Leopard, Red Wolf by Marlon James — Out February 5th

Set in Ancient Africa, a hunter named Tracker follows the scent of a lost boy and ends up working with a group of mysterious and secret individuals to try to find him — including a shapeshifting man/animal named Leopard. Their journey becomes fraught with danger when creatures have set out to kill them making Tracker wonder who this boy is and why does it seem people are intent on having him not find him.

I love fantasy and have been craving something just wildly DIFFERENT. This looks to fit the bill. Definitely one of the most intriguing of all the upcoming books in 2019 that I looked at.

The Night Olivia Fell by Christina McDonald — Out February 5th

In the vein of Big Little Lies and Reconstructing Amelia comes an emotionally charged domestic suspense novel about a mother unraveling the truth behind how her daughter became brain dead. And pregnant.

WOO boy ever since becoming a mom I have a tougher time reading about parents losing children. I’m eager to know what happened to the daughter!

The Last Romantics by Tara Conklin — Out February 5th

A sweeping family saga exploring the lives of four siblings and their bond throughout the period of time when their father died and their mother slipped into her grief leaving them to fend for themselves and then in the future, as adults, when another family crisis occurs and they have to confront their relationships.

I LOVE family saga type novels but then I saw reason to believe there is some small dystopian part of the setting so now I’m even MORE intrigued — seriously the books coming out in 2019 sound so ridiculously good and they better all live up to my hopes and dreams for them (no pressure!!).

The Care and Feeding of Ravenously Hungry Girls by Anissa Gray — Out February 19th

“The Mothers meets An American Marriage in this dazzling debut novel about mothers and daughters, identity and family, and how the relationships that sustain you can also be the ones that consume you.”

I know comparison titles are always risky but I like the sounds of this and I can’t resist stories about mothers and daughters and families coming together during hard times. I also lowkey need to know what the eldest sister and her husband did to get their butts landed in jail and disgrace the family name.

The Winter Sister by Megan Collins — Out February 5

“A young woman haunted by the past returns home to care for her ailing mother and begins to dig deeper into her sister’s unsolved murder.”

When my sister and I were younger in the 90’s we were OBSESSED with Unsolved Mysteries –especially the unsolved murder ones (okay and the UFO ones lol). I feel like any time there is a long-running unsolved murder in a summary I’m always interested.

The Lost Girls of Paris by Pam Jenoff — Out February 5th

From the author of the runaway bestseller The Orphan’s Tale comes a remarkable story of friendship and courage centered around three women and a ring of female spies during World War II.

A RING OF FEMALE SPIES? Hook, line and sinker. Plus if you’ve been around these parts for a while you know that stories of friendship are always a draw to me! I never read The Orphan’s Tale (I know, I know, I will) but I’m so excited for this 2019 book release.

When You Read This by Mary Adkins — Out February 5th

An epistolary novel about a woman who leaves behind a blog that she makes her boss (and friend) promise to turn into a book — a promise he intends to keep. He has to get approval from Iris’s sister and, even though they disagree on the manuscript, their grief brings them closer together via email.

Oh this one is going to be a tearjearker I can tell. One with fun moments and romance but I know I’m going to cry. I also love a good epistolary novel — having a change in format is always a good idea to reach for when I’m in a reading slump or something.

The Test by Sylvain Neuvel— Out February 12

WOW WOW WOW. This 2019 book release sounds so good and messed up. I heard someone say it reminded them of an episode of Black Mirror which TOTALLYYYY is a show I love and I’m down for that.

Daisy Jones & The Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid — Out March 5

The story takes the format of an oral history of a (fictitious) band called Daisy Jones & The Six that tells the story of the group and exposes the reason behind their split at the absolute height of their popularity.

If you have read this blog for a few years you know I worship at the alter of Taylor Jenkins Reid. Seriously go read all her books. I’ll wait. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THIS ONE — probably more than all the other 2019 books  — 1) because it’s a new one from her   2) music is a huge part of this + the 70’s  3) it seems like such an interesting concept of telling the story of this band like its an oral history. SO HERE FOR THIS.

My Lovely Wife by Samantha Downing — Out March 26

“Dexter meets Mr. and Mrs. Smith in this wildly compulsive debut thriller about a couple whose fifteen-year marriage has finally gotten too interesting.”

STOP IT. You cannot say Dexter meets Mr. & Mrs. Smith because I will take that very seriously and obviously it will be one of my must read books of 2019. The last part of the full summary kills me — ” we all have secrets to keeping a marriage alive. Ours just happens to be getting away with murder.” I need it. I need this in my hands now.

The Last Year Of The War by Susan Meissner — Out March 19

Two young girls meet and build a friendship when their families are brought to an internment camp in the US during WW2.

I feel like I rarely read WWII related books set in the US and have never even really seen any that seem to explore internment camps here during that time.

Queenie by Candice Carty-Williams — Out March 19

This one looks really charming and funny from what I’ve seen! I’m excited to meet Queenie! Plus I always love books with characters in their 20’s because my 20’s were such a wildly life-changing decade and it’s so much easier to look back on them from a distance. So much soul searching and trying to figure out what you want your life to be like and I have a feeling that’s going to play a big part in this book!

In Another Time by Jillian Cantor — Out March 5

At first when I was checking this one out I was like hmmm do I really need another WWII book to read on my most anticipated books of 2019 list?? But then ya know what got me? In the blurb it looks like THERE IS A MEMORY LOSS ELEMENT which I am always drawn to. The main character seems to wake up in a field outside of Berlin without memory of the last 10 years or about the man she fell in love with. AND WELP NOW I AM JUST TOO INTRIGUED SO MORE WW2 NOVELS FOR ME.

The Island of Sea Women by Lisa See — Out March 19

A novel, spanning many decades, about two young girls from very different backgrounds who become part of the all-female diving collective of their village. Their friendship is tested by their different backgrounds and forces much bigger themselves as the island is caught up in wars and modernization and politics.

Oh my goodness, thank you dear gods of 2019 books — female friendship and family secrets and LADY DIVERS set on a small island in Korea. Count me in!

The Liar’s Child by Carla Buckley — Out March 12

I LOVE books where the main character does something wrong that they think is the right thing to do, and YOU might be a bit conflicted, and it sounds like we might get a little of that here with the main character “rescuing” these children from their broken home.

If, Then by Kate Hope Day — Out March 12

This sounds FANTASTIC and different. Why are they having this visions of alternate realities of their life?? Why do they become more frightening after a while? I NEED TO KNOW THE THINGS.

Midnight at the Wandering Vineyard by Jamie Raintree — Out March 26

I love complicated friendship books AND bucket lists so obviously this is one of the must-reads of 2019 for me!! Also hope they both take whatever man came in between them to TAKE A HIKE.

Save Me From Dangerous Men by S.A. Lelchuk  — Out March 19

Okay the blurb says Nikki Griffin is “part Lisbeth Salander, part Jack Reacher, part Jessica Jones” sooo yeah I’m very much into this.

Gingerbread by Helen Oyeyemi — Out March 5

Perdita and Harriet Lee might look like your typical British mother and daughter but that’s not at all the case. They live with talking plants and the smell of gingerbread they always have. The Gingerbread they make is a mystical food that connects Harriet to her own fantastical childhood in a faraway land and  to her childhood friend Gretel. Years later Perdita sets out to find her mom’s long lost friend Gretel and understand her family heritage.

This sounds so strange and fairytale like and I’m into that sort of thing plus I’m so curious to see how gingerbread plays a factor in a fantastical way. One of the most unique new books in 2019 that I came across!

When We Left Cuba by Chanel Cleeton — Out April 9

“In 1960s Florida, a young Cuban exile will risk her life–and heart–to take back her country by helping the CIA to infiltrate Castro’s inner circle and get back at the man who was the reason for her family losing everything and having to leave Cuba.

One of the best books I read in 2018 was Chanel Cleeton’s Next Year In Havana so OBVIOUSLY I’m stoked about this one. I’m excited to see more of Beatriz’s story! It can be read without reading Next Year in Havana but that one was so good soooo why would you do that to yourself??

The Binding by Bridget Collins — Out April 16

A historical fantasy about a poor farmer’s son who becomes a newly bookbinder apprentice, and the nephew of a wealthy aristocrat who are doomed to be starcrossed lovers in a world where books are not stories but the repository of individual lives and things in your life can be erased or forgotten with the help of a binder.

THIS SOUNDS MAGICAL. Also very interested in this world where books are a feared, dangerous and forbidden thing.

Meet Cute by Helena Hunting — Out April 9

“A Hollywood happily-ever-after where a famous heartthrob falls for his ultimate fangirl in this sexy standalone romantic comedy.”

I need cute romcoms in my life and this one has a fave trope — famous person falls for a ~normal~ person.

The Place on Dalhousie by Melina Marchetta — Out April 2

VERY IMPORTANT PSA: If you haven’t read the wonder that is Melina Marchetta, do it. This book is at the top of my most anticipated books of 2019 list because it features a character, many years later, who was in one of her other novels that I loved. She’s a powerhouse writer that has written so many different types of books I’m just astounded by her talent.

The Lost History of Dreams by Kris Waldherr — Out April 9

I’m a huge lover of gothic fiction and The Thirteenth Tale is one of my favorite books ever so this was obviously going to be on a list of must read books for 2019! This sounds fascinating —

Normal People by Sally Rooney — Out April 16

In high school Connell and Marianne pretend not to know each other despite their unlikely connection. A year later they both end up studying at Trinity College — always circling one another but also exploring new possibilities. 

There are not enough books, in my opinion, set in college! This one sounds so good and I can’t wait to read the ins and outs of their relationship because I don’t know about you but I totally had this sort of person in my life for a while.

The Unlikely Adventures of the Shergill Sisters by Balli Kaur Jaswal — Out April 30

 “Three Punjabi sisters embarking on a pilgrimage to their homeland to lay their mother to rest.”

I just love when I see SISTERS in a title while scouring for upcoming 2019 book releases — it’s like a blinking neon sign for me! I love books about sister and families just in general so this one piqued my interest because it’s about 3 sisters who aren’t particularly close but who are forced to travel together to lay their mother to rest in India as she requested on her deathbed. Definitely on my must read books of 2019 list!

The Bride Test by Helen Hoang — Out May 7

A love story about a man who thinks he can’t love and the woman who he meets after his mom goes to Vietnam to find him a bride.

As of the time I’m writing this I have NOT yet read The Kiss Quotient but it’s most definitely going to be read by the time 2018 is over. This totally looks like a romance I would like plus everyone raved about The Kiss Quotient thus it’s gotta be one of my must read books for 2019.

The Flatmate by Beth O’Leary — Out May 28

After a bad breakup Tiffy needs a new place to live so she answers an ad about a flat in which the other tenant, a night-shift worker, will take the apartment during the day and she’ll have it on nights and weekends making it so they will never see each other. They start writing out notes to each other about things regarding the flat until it turns into more.

I LOVE the premise of this novel!! How fun to see a love story unfold through notes from two people who share the same space but have never met!

The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek by Kim Michele Richardson— Out May 7

The story of nineteen-year-old Cussy “Bluet” Mary Carter — thought to be the last female of the blue mountainfolk. An avid book lover, Cussy Mary joins the Kentucky Pack Horse Library program — a group of librarians who travel by horse, mule, and sometimes by foot to reach the remotest and poorest areas and homes no matter the weather.

I love books about book-related things. Like badass women who get books to people!! So into this! Seems like a love letter to books and librarians.

The Confessions of Frannie Langton by Sara Collins — Out May 21

“A servant and former slave is accused of murdering her employer and his wife in this astonishing historical thriller that moves from a Jamaican sugar plantation to the fetid streets of Georgian London.”

This historical thriller sounds so up my alley. And again it looks like there is some amnesia element where Frannie can’t recall what happened but she is pretty sure she didn’t kill them.

Star-Crossed by Minnie Darke — Out May 21

Childhood sweethearts Justine and Nick reconnect when they, as adults, accidentally meet in the city and Justine is certain it means they are destined to be together. She finds out Nick is an astrology devotee who makes his decisions and she just happens to have gotten a job in the astrology department of the magazine he reads. Justine decides to take the Fates (aka Nick’s horoscope as long as every other Aquarius) into her own hands.

This one looks super fun! I’ve been making an effort to add more fun books in my book diet because I typically gravitate towards things that will make me weep and when I read happy books I realize that’s an amazing experience too. So I’m doing better at seeking them out and this one looks perfect (though i hope she realizes manipulating someone to choose you is a bad idea lo

Recursion by Blake Crouch — Out June 11

After a woman tells Barry Sutton, right before falling to her death, that her son has been erased he investigates and learns that all across the country people are waking up to lives different from the ones they fell asleep to. His investigation leads him to a neuroscientist who has developed a technology that will help us preserve and relive moments in our life but, as he learns, can also be used to remake them.

This sounds SO AMAZING. Also apparently Shonda Rhimes (my fave!) is adapting this for Netflix so THAT is exciting.

City of Girls by Elizabeth Gilbert — Out June 4th

“A unique love story set in the New York City theater world during the 1940s. Told from the perspective of an older woman as she looks back on her youth with both pleasure and regret (but mostly pleasure), City of Girls explores themes of female sexuality and promiscuity, as well as the idiosyncrasies of true love.”

Oooh super excited about the 1940’s New York setting plus THEATER. Totally here for it and any book that explores the themes above.

Home For Erring & Outcast Girls by Julie Kibler — Out June 4

“Tells the story of two young women connected by a home for “fallen girls” where they meet and become friends and the reclusive university librarian, a century later, who uncovers (and feels drawn to) the hidden histories of the two troubled women as she stumbles upon the cemetery on the home’s former grounds and begins to comb through its archives in her library to learn more about their stories.

I love love love books where stories are somehow entertwined or just unearthed but felt a connection to many, many years apart. This sounds so good and YAY another friendship book on my must read book list for 2019! I’m also very curious if somehow the librarian is connected to them like I’ve read in some books lately or if it’s just a feeling of kinship in some parallel way.

Summer Hours by Amy Mason Doan — Out June 4

Out of all the books on my most anticipated books for 2019 list, THIS one is the one that surprises me the most because I don’t always LOVE secret affair novels. They have to be JUUUUST right for me and this one has intrigued me so much. Looks like a great poolside read which is perfect since it comes out in the beginning of June!

One Night At The Lake by Bethany Chase — Out June 18

This is a must read book in 2019 for me because I have read and LOVED this author’s other books. It technically should make the cut for my second half of the year list but I refuse to leave it off because I am SO HYPED. It’s also set in the Finger Lakes region (Seneca Lake to be exact) not far from where I grew up so there’s so much nostalgia there for me. And you guys…go read the full summary because HOW DOES THIS NOT SOUND LIKE SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE ON YOUR MUST READ BOOK LIST FOR 2019?!
