This week’s topic: Top Ten Characters Who….
I decided to give a nod to the bookish/word-loving characters I’ve encountered.
Cath from Rainbow Rowell’s Fangirl: Not only is Cath a reader but the girl loves her books with a passion that I can understand so much so that she writes fan-fiction!
Paige from Emery Lord’s The Start Of Me & You — She’s a writer and has aspirations to go to a summer screen writing program. She’s been dubbed “Grammar Girl” (a nickname she isn’t too fond of). She’s a bookworm who love to reread and when she was younger would sneak off to read at slumber parties (I FEEL YOU GIRL)! And she won’t back down from a debate about Jane Austen.
Violet in Jennifer Niven’s All the Bright Places: Violet is a blogger who is passionate about writing!
Liesel from Markus Zusack’s The Book Thief: Liesel is a voracious reader who even did some breaking and entering to get some reading material.
Matilda from Roald Dahl’s Matilda: I LOVED Matilda as a kid. She is a reading CHAMP. Reading ALL THE BOOKS. Books and the stories inside them help her to escape her awful family and she quite learns a thing or two from them!
Isla from Isla and the Happily Ever After: I loved meeting Isla for many reasons but I loved her bookworm tendencies. She loves stories of adventure (especially ones with disaster involved) but totally reads books with happy endings too.
Hazel and Gus from John Green’s The Fault In Our Stars: They both love to read but they read very different things. I loved how they traded their favorite books with each other and talked thoughtfully about books and reading. One of my favorite quotes comes from this book: “Sometimes, you read a book and it fills you with this weird evangelical zeal, and you become convinced that the shattered world will never be put back together unless and until all living humans read the book.”
Jo March from Louisa May Alcott’s Little Women: Jo is a reader and a writer. I loved how she would write plays for her and her sisters to perform. She also writes stories and has aspirations to be published.
Anna from Words and Their Meanings: She’s a talented writer, esteemed with awards and praise at young age, who stopped writing after tragedy strikes.
Celaena Sardothien from Sarah J. Maas’ Throne of Glass: There are MANY things I love about Celaena but I freaking loved that she was a reader. She feels sad that nobody reads the books in the library and uses her charm to get Dorian to allow her to read them (he gives her his favorite and wants to discuss them!!). She stays up too late reading and devours books left and right…all while waking up the next morning and being a badass.
So tell me some of your favorite characters who are writers, readers and lovers of words!!! I love reading about characters who are bookish like me!

probably one of my favourite reader/writers is Finnkin of the Rock; especially because of how he travels across Skuldenore writing the book of Lumatere so the exiles are never forgotten and so the history is Lumatere is recorded. And Evanjalin for learning the languages and the words of all of Skuldenore to lead her people home.

Such a great list! I love seeing The Start of Me and You here because I LOVED that book. One character that came to my mind right away is Hermione from Harry Potter. Also, if you think outside of books, Rory Gilmore would totally make this list!

Caleana is just far. too. awesome. I mean, she adores puppies and clothes and cake and books?! SHE IS UNREAL IN HER FABULOUSNESS. I particularly like how she adopts books because they’re unread and lonely. I love that. 😉 And I adore Hazel and Gus’ bookish swapping and how, even though they read vastly different genres, they don’t ever act like the other’s tastes are bad. XD I LOVE THAT.

Yay, I was hoping Cath would make your list! (Really, how could she not?)
It actually really bothers me when MCs in books don’t like to read. I mean, they don’t necessarily have to LOVE it, but when the author goes out of her/his way to say that the MC hates reading, I find it almost insulting, I guess. Does that make any sense?

Love this list. Matilda is one of my favorite characters EVER. When I first read it, I loved that there was a character who loved books as much as I did. I still need to read The Book Thief.

This is an awesome list. I love Matilda, it was one of my favourite books and films growing up because none of my friends loved reading as much as I did, so I felt like I could identify with Matilda. The film was on a couple of weeks ago and I’d not seen it in years, it’s strange how differently I viewed it as an adult in comparison to a kid who didn’t really understand everything that was going on with her family.
I’m going to add Miles / Pudge from Looking For Alaska to this list because of his love for famous last words.

I love that about Hazel and Gus, too! And the quotation you mentioned. I also like Cather Avery and how passionate she is about her fandom (we can all relate to that). And this one “all while waking up the next morning and being a badass”? Wow. Wonderful list, Jamie!

I love that quote from TFIOS. It’s one of my favourite quotes in the whole book because it’s so beautiful and REAL haha. One of my favourite things about Celaena is that she’s a reader too – It gives me hope knowing that she’s a badass and also a book nerd.
