The Books I Read But Never Talked About Before My Hiatus: PART 1

Sooooo the last time I wrote any sort of book talk/what I’ve been reading post was *cough* November 7th. And the thing was….I was already behind on the books I had to talk about BEFORE I got pregnant and the first trimester killed me and then I forgot how to blog after all that time. So I’m going to BRIEFLY mention some of the books I read last Fall/end of 2016 because they deserve to be mentioned and then I’ll finish part 2 of them so as not to make this post reallyyyyy long and also I don’t want to lose my motivation and if it takes me too long I JUST MIGHT as I dip my toes back into this blogging water.

About In A Sentence or Two: No, she did NOT see it coming. That becomes an overused thought and sentence Caroline has to utter after she finds out that her husband (and high school sweetheart) of 10 years has been having an affair….with a man. She’s left to pick up the pieces of what she thought her whole life had been and who she thought she was married to.

Thoughts: You’ll be wondering the whole time if they can work it out or if she’ll fall for someone new but you’ll also fall in love with the great sister relationship that evolves and the process of watching how someone untangles who she truly is from 10 years of who she thought she was and what she thought her life was. I really enjoyed reading this one and felt like I could relate (not to her specific problem) in that sometimes in life you have to reconfigure after things are not what you thought they were. How do you move on from there? I loved watching her answer that question.

Kids of Appetite by David Arnold

About In A Sentence Or Two: A group of misfits are the suspects in a murder and the story alternates in the past and present to show us how they got to the present in which they are at the police station being interrogated.

Thoughts: Definitely one of my favorite books I read in the fall! I love ragtag groups of misfit friends who wouldn’t otherwise be friends and this one had one of the absolute BEST ONES. These characters were so unique and vivid and jumped off the pages. PLUS I really enjoyed the non-linear structure of this novel and how everything unfolded as you try and figure out what happened with Mad’s uncle and why they are in the police station. This was one of those books that lingered for a while — the emotions were so real. If you like your books quirky and smart and full of unique characters, check this one out!

About In A Sentence Or Two: When Sloane moves to a new state her senior year of high school she doesn’t plan on making friends until she meets Vera and Gabe and their group of friends who change her life.

Thoughts: Oh this one was so delightful. Reminded me of: how truly wonderful it is when you find your people, the thrill (and scariness) of new friendships and how beautiful a thing friendship is when we have those people who we can lean on in the good times and bad. The romance was super cute too! If you are looking for a good book with strong friendships, a cute romance and quite a bit of emotion right alongside humor and banter…this needs to be your next read! It’s a shame I didn’t get to write a review right after I read this because I remember having so much specific stuff to say about it! Great for fans of Sarah Dessen!

About In A Sentence Or Two: It’s Mean Girls meets the scariest thing you can imagine to come from messing with a Ouija board all with an atmospheric boarding school setting.

Thoughts: I won’t lie, I started getting a little jumpy reading this retelling of Macbeth at night. I read this one pretty quickly and enjoyed the creepiness of it all, the setting and how everything started to unfold. It started out a lot stronger than it ended for me though. The characters, overall, didn’t do much for me and the ending started to lose me but the beginning to middle was really strong and had me turning the pages quickly.  It’s a dark and revenge-y and a quick supernatural read! Makes for a good Halloween read!

Stalking Jack The Ripper by Kerri Maniscalco

About In A Sentence Or Two: A historical thriller wherein the main character, from a wealthy family but with a penchant to spend time in her uncles lab studying forensic science, tries to figure out who Jack the Ripper is as he terrorizes the streets and his victims end up in the lab.

Thoughts: It’s a gruesome historical thriller, light on the scares, and it has a good dose of defying the patriarchy/society constructs for a woman! I flew through it and couldn’t wait to crack the case of who Jack the Ripper was with our heroine — though I think I definitely figured it out before her so the whole time I was like GIRL YOU IN DANGER when she didn’t realize it but I was pretty sure I knew who it was. The twists and turns were at all the right moments to keep you all antsy and turning the pages. Very fun (if you consider murdery stories fun haha)! Apparently it’s going to be part of a series and I will definitely be checking out the next book because I’m so here for historical murder-y mysteries.
