The Books My Brain Needed

book recommendations and books to read

I’ve mentioned that during my first trimester and a little after that I was having a hard time reading anything. But when I WAS up to reading all I was craving was some light, wonderful fluff. I am a fan of ~fluff~ books and I hate when people act as if they aren’t as good as Other Books. GOOD FLUFFY READING IS IMPORTANT OKAY??

Anyways, my brain was just really craving fun and light books — no matter the genre — but definitely was wanting light and fluffy contemporary romances.  So I figured why don’t I round up some of those books that got me through that misery where I wasn’t quite my self when it came to reading.

They were all so delightful and I’d recommend any of these:

Queens of Geek Jen Wilde book review

Queens of Geek by Jen Wilde

(I received my copy for review consideration. All opinions are 10000% my own)

What It’s About: Two friends finally get the chance to attend SupaCon together while both having to confront some tough things personally– like a very public breakup and personal life under scrutiny as a Youtube star and anxiety that makes attending something like SupaCon a feat in itself.

What I Thought: Oh I just adored this one — it was so cute! I loved the Comic-Con type setting, the strong friendships and, guys, the romances were ADOOOOORABLE — a really cute f/f romance and the cutest best-friend-turned-more romance. Both main characters were fully fleshed out — I felt for Charlie with her very public breakup and her uncertainty about sharing a new romance and I really cheered for Taylor as she tried to push herself even though it was really hard with her anxiety. I really loved how the book handled her anxiety. Plus the pop culture/fandoms/geek culture aspect was really fun and something I could relate heavily to. It was just absolutely a delight all around while tackling some really important things. Reading it in one sitting!!

How To Keep A Boy From Kissing You Tara Eglington
How To Keep A Boy From Kissing You by Tara Eglington:

(I received my copy for review consideration. All opinions are 10000% my own)

What It’s About: Sixteen year old Aurora has never been kissed and she intends for it to stay that way until she finds The One who is worthy of her first kiss — which means dodging kiss attempts on dates and focusing on the love lives of her friends. Until she gets the lead role in a play that requires her to kiss the male lead who happens to be her neighbor who she can’t stand….and she won’t let that happen so the urgency to find The One is on!

What I Thought: I read this is in the throes of morning sickness and I died from adorableness. Like cotton candy fluff. Not normally the type of romance I would be drawn to normally, if I’m being honest, but it was exactly what the doctor (should have) ordered. It was very predictable (but sometimes there is comfort in that when it comes to rom-coms and why I gravitate towards them at times) and it was one of those books where YOUUUU know who the guy is and have to wait for the MC to figure it out but it was not in the infuriating way but more in the way where you just want to smoosh their heads together to kiss like you did with your Barbie dolls back in the day. JUST KISS ALREADY. Super sweet and fun!

The Hating Game by Sally Thorne
The Hating Game by Sally Thorne:

What It’s About: Lucy haaaaates her co-worker and fellow executive assistant, Josh, who sits across from her and is always torturing her. Their personalities couldn’t be more different. Now they are up for a promotion and are each others biggest competition which really heats things up in the office….including the tension between the two which might not be the kind of loathing Lucy thought it was.

What I Thought: I finallyyyy read this one. You see, I hadn’t heard much about it and got it out from the library….and then I never got time to read it. AND THEN…the internet exploded with love for this book. So it scared me off. BUT ALAS….the hype was warranted. If you are in the mood for a fun adult rom-com, THIS IS THE ONE. It has my most faaaaavorite trope — the hate to love romance — and the BANTER and the tension are just A+++. Not only that but I really enjoyed that the romance was an ~office romance.~ Lucy and Josh are just darling and I enjoyed watching their relationship change and watch them individually deal with some personal stuff. WHY IS THIS BOOK NOT A MOVIE YET??????? It would be the best rom com ever.  ALSO…please someone who has read this give me recs similar to this!!

Daughter of the Pirate King
Daughter of the Pirate King by Tricia Levenseller

(I received my copy for review consideration. All opinions are 10000% my own)

What It’s About: Alosa is a pirate captain AND daughter of an infamous pirate King who has sent her on a mission to retrieve an ancient hidden map. The plan? Let her get taken hostage by their enemies where she’ll be able to search the ship for the map. Alosa is most certainly more clever and capable than this ruthless crew but she meets her match in the first mate who is tasked with looking after her.

What I Thought: THIS WAS SO FUN! If you are looking for something light and ~fluffy~ and you don’t tend to gravitate toward contemporary romance type books…this pirate-filled adventure is exactly what you need! An absolutely fun, pirate-y romp at sea (a setting I’ve been wanting to see more of). I cannot wait for book 2 to see where the adventures take them. I could NOT put this one down — a very page-turning adventure that will probably have you biting your nails as you watch Alosa deal with some very close calls as she skulks around trying to find the map and not be caught. Alosa is very endearing and I loved how clever, sneaky and resourceful she was. And Riden….oh Riden! Great enemies to lovers romance.

Have you read any of these? Tell me some of your favorite ~fluff~ type reads?? I have a feeling I’m going to need to incorporate even more in my reading life when my brain is scrambled from having a newborn and no sleep.

I’m so glad to see so many people enjoying Queens of Geek–it was so adorably nerdy & geeky and I adored it. It’s one of the few books that has a split POV with two romances where I was equally invested in BOTH relationships, which is rare & definitely a strength of the book for me.

Yes same!! Every time I would switch POVs I was equally delighted by the romance! I didn’t want to leave the one but I did bc I wanted the other one as well haha

Hmm, I totally understand what you are saying about needing fluff books. Lately, it seems like I gravitate towards thrillers as my fluff read. For me, fluff is a quick entertaining read. It can still have substance and creativity. It just needs to be good 🙂 I’ve enjoyed Where’d You Go Bernadette and A Man Called Ove. Middle grade is also another one of my “fluff” choices. I won’t lie, every once in a while, I will throw a Danielle Steel novel in there 🙂

These all sound so good, and I’ve put them all on my TBR! I’m definitely a “fluff” fan and feel the urge more than ever to read fluff books, so this list comes at the perfect time! Thanks!

Awesome list! I haven’t read any of these books, Jamie, but I’ve heard great things about The Hating Game and the blurb is calling my name. 😀
    Thanks for sharing.

Anything You Can Do by RS Grey is similar to The Hating Game (but not quite as good)! I’m constantly looking for books like it, but I usually end up re-reading The Hating Game 😉 Happy reading!

Book shopping is great but I can’t express how incredible building community is and indie bookshops do just that. I always wanted my own version of Cheers and, while not a bar where everybody knows my name, CBW was that place for me for almost a decade when I built community by going to YA book events there and moderating events. And while I am not able to get there as often as I was before I became a mom and we moved further away, It’s been so special to be able to share this beloved space with Riley.

Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technic Ok technically I’m lying. My last read was technically ATMOSPHERE but I feel like between my stories and my dedicated post to it, I’d rather talk about the book I read before it but didn’t update y’all on.

The Trouble With Anna — I enjoyed this delightful little historical romance about a heroine who is carving out her independence only to find out, when her grandfather dies, that he tied her inheritance/future to marrying her best friend’s brother — a not-so-happy surprise for both of them. I could understand why they both had some guardness/walls up and I enjoyed watching them slowly start to lower them.

Mayhem and the Mortal - I’m not too far into this romantic fantasy but it is one of my most anticipated that came out last month and I’m excited to dig in more.

Hamnet — I know, I know. For April I decided not to make a traditional TBR list of books I wanted to read but instead give myself some prompts to guide my reading (bc I’m overwhelmed with all my choices at hand) without feeling rigid. One of the prompts was to read a book I HAD TO BUY but is still unread. So going to finally get to it. Have you read this one or watched the movie?

What are you currently reading?
I had been waiting for the perfect time to read th I had been waiting for the perfect time to read this one after Random House sent me a finished copy as TJR is a longtime auto-buy author. I found myself caught up in all the space joy and wonder and feeling quite parasocial about the Artemis crew...I decided now was the time.

I had no idea what I was getting into.

I hadn’t really known what it was about but I didn’t really need to given its TJR & the fact it was 1980s NASA & astronauts.

But this book was about love to me - romantic love, platonic love, familial love, love for something bigger than yourself, love for the person you are & are becoming, love in the face of obstacles, love for what lights you up.

Having been invested in real life astronauts & their journey lately really made this book even more vivid to me — seeing the bonds of the crew so deeply, feeling the fragility that exists while they are doing this wondrous & crazy thing that often still boggles my mind that we can do.

And, hardest to put into words, that feeling of awe in the expansive nature & capabilities of love & the universe that I felt when a husband named a crater after his late wife which doubly helped me understand how Joan & Vanessa felt looking back at earth.

It made me sob & feel everything about being a human so deeply basically from that Frances/Joan phone call at 86% of the way through until the final words. Like could not breathe.

*might be a tiny bit spoilery so beware:

I think the way she wrote this was so impactful bc we start out knowing something bad happens &it’s not even that far when we know that some of them def won’t make it back & some are alive in peril.

I was like “oof” when *it* happens early on. But each and every chapter where we learn more about these ppl & their relationships felt agonizing & I was retroactively grieving for them more deeply every turn of the page.

The hurt and grief just compounds from a moment that was sad from the jump to something that had dug in deep to me.

To know what happens right before this mission makes the mission control bits even more excruciating. Makes the peril a character is in hit even harder than just “oh that must be scary!”.

I loved it. I needed it bad.
The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being m The theme of Q1 was “just go with it” — it being my reading whims, quirks and troubles.

Interesting things:

1. January started out rough. I only read 1 physical book and leaned very heavy into audiobooks only. At first it was distressing that my brain -thanks to current events and their effect on my mind - couldn’t work out how to sit down and read with my eyeballs but I was like…let’s just roll with it and wait for it to pass. So I waited and enjoyed a ton of audiobooks.

2. I don’t think I’ve ever read so many thrillers and mysteries in a quarter. It’s a genre I love but I’m normally quite more balanced. However, it’s what I was craving and what my brain was tolerating so…I just went with it.

3. I have always been a reader led by my moods (both how I feel reading wise and personally). This quarter was FERAL. Like the most feral mood reading ever. I couldn’t even categorize it. I’d decide on one book enthusiastically and suddenly I was like…absolutely not that.

4. I read way less fantasy than normal which was WEIRD but I felt like I also wasn’t surprised given my brain space.

5. I really started to resent people even more who said “it’s a book account stop talking about politics etc”. Babe, I’m a human who gives a shit but ALSO this has and always been an account of MY reading life. And my reading life was profoundly affected by the things that were going on in this country. Like they have been before - whether it’s been current events or things like having a kid, being depressed, slumps, etc.

6. I return to the fact that, for me, I am happiest when I pay attention to my reading whims. The end of the month I had a very specific reading mood (wanted time travel element but not a heavy time travel book) and I decided to pick up A Rip Through Time at the end of the month and I’m now halfway through book 4. Having the best time ever!!!

Anyways, tell me how your reading life was in Q1! Fave books? Biggest surprises??

I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first I love when I just absolutely nail it on the first try when trying to satisfy a super specific reading mood - Kelley Armstrong’s A Rip Through Time definitely nailed what I wanted. Time travel but didn’t really want too time travely…just more of a vibe or catalyst for some fun. If you love a good mystery, some time travel shenanigans and a great cast of characters, I highly recommend this book. #bookrec #bookrecommendation #bookreview #mysterybooks #historicalmystery #kelleyarmstrong
🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸 🌸 Some romances on my personal radar for April. 🌸

Beyond excited for a new Kate Clayborn, Kasie west, rainbow Rowell, Jenn Bennett and Beth O’Leary - I’ve enjoyed these authors in the past.

My historical loving heart is most excited for The Duke and How To Fake It In Society.

I love an emotional romance so The Art of Loving You is high on my list plus I’ve heard great things about this author.

I’m intrigued by Fast Lane especially since it’s being adapted for a tv series. I’m seeing comparisons to Elle Kennedy’s Off Campus series which I did love!
