Top Ten Tuesday time over at The Broke and the Bookish! This week the topic is top ten favorite words. It is a little different from the normal type of topics–about favorite characters or books you can’t believe you’ve never read. Being that we are all readers, we have to possess a certain love for words! Here are some of my favorites–serious and not so serious.
1. Irk — Any form of the word is just fine with me. It just sounds so much better when you can tell someone that they are really irking you rather than being generic and saying pissed off. 🙂
2. Ravenous– This word is just so vivid to me. Mirriam Webster says that it means very eager or greedy for food, satisfaction, or gratification. I think he forgot eager or greedy for BOOKS on there.
3. Sheisty– Is this even a word? Urban Dictionary probably would have it on there. I like calling certain people sheisters. Meaning– shady, bullshitters, dishonest, etc.
4. Befuddle — It kind of makes me giggle. Meaning–to confuse.
5. Schlep- Anytime I use this word I get asked if I’m an old Jewish woman. I personally think of Fran Drescher from The Nanny when I hear this word. Meaning– To carry clumsily or with difficulty; lug, to move slowly. As a noun– an arduous journey or a clumsy or stupid person.
6. Loathe – I don’t like when I have to use this word but I just love the way it rolls off my tongue when I say it. I learned at an early age that I could get around the “no saying ‘I Hate You” rule” and say loathe instead.
7. Amok — This word is just fun to say. I’m notorious for talking about things running amok. I frequently commented whilst working retail that parents should stop letting their kids run amok and destroy things. BEAST CHILDREN!
8. Surreptitious– I think this is such a pretty word. Meaning– done, made, or acquired by stealth, sneaky, clandestine
9. Whimsical — Love this word so much. It is so pretty and I love the meaning and it is perfect in describing one of my favorite designer’s, Anna Sui, clothing. Meaning– Determined by, arising from, or marked by whim or caprice, Erratic in behavior or degree of unpredictability
10. Ephemeral — What a beautiful word! Meaning– lasting for a markedly brief time.

I love umami, absconded, ersatz, voracious, lascivious, confusticate, diaphanous, combustible, cacophony, and hermitage. Lots of Cs in there for some reason. With a few of these I can point to the books where I first came across them (Ersatz Elevator for ersatz, The Hobbit for confusticate, and Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde for diaphanous).

It's fun to see all these words…especially doing your own list and see words you left off (surreptitious) and/or words that you did pick (sorta – I had whim) show up on another's list.

I think if I ever used the word 'befuddle' in a conversation people would start to laugh because it's such a funny word.

What a whimsical list! Although, it was epheremal as I read it, I wasn't befuddled. In fact, I'm even ravenous to read others lists now! 🙂 Nice choices!

This is a great T10T, I wish I could think of that many words I loved, lol. But must are in another language and idk if they'd count. If I had made a list, though, ephemeral would have been on it. I love that one! I saw another list with halcyon and that's definitely a big one, too. Great list!

Irk. Loathe. Amok. Excellent words that I also try to incorporate into my regular vocabulary. Sometimes it's the little words that pack the most punch!
