Wedding Wednesday is a feature I created so that, for the next year, I can talk about my wedding planning progress, review wedding books, give wedding tips, share bookish wedding ideas, talk about weddings in books, etc. Pretty much whatever I want. Just an update this time…
So this past weekend we went to the venue to do a tasting to determine our wedding menu. I think I had always imagined a tasting as a time in which you and your fiance just go and sit at a small table with the wedding coordinator and the chef staring at you as you chew and swallow each morsel of food. AWKWARD. I hate people watching me eat…I always end up missing my mouth or something.
Luckily for us it was not like that at all. They made it a group event and there were about 30 other people there — brides, grooms and family members for those who wanted to bring them. We opted for it just to be the two of us. I mean, it’s $50 just to go to this thing (although the bride & groom’s meal comes off your total bill at the end).
We were running late of course because we hit some traffic on a road that I’ve NEVER hit traffic on before. Seriously, I thought there had to be an accident because I used to drive this road to work. Anyways, we get there and the cocktail time has started. SO we settled in for some cocktails (rum & coke for me and a beer for Will) and the feasting began as the brought out samples of the appetizers. It stinks that they only make a few. I’d like to taste all of them on the list of 15ish so I can make the best decisions butttt…everything tasted good so I’m going to put my faith in the rest of it.
Then we sat down at tables to try the main courses. It was slightly awkward for Will and I as we sat at a table with a bride, groom and her family but it was fine. They were really nice and friendly! They give you small size portions so that you can sample the various dishes they brought out. My favorite was the crabcake for sure. NO FILLER. Like AMAZING crabcakes. I really liked the chicken…not rubbery or dry. But the beef was just eh. I mean..it was good but it was just beef….nothing special.
AND THEN THE WEDDING CAKE. It’s a poundcake and the buttercream icing is sooo good. Not super sweet. We tried vanilla, chocolate chip, raspberry swirl, and marble….and maybe one more? Will prefers the vanilla (AS ALWAYS) and I liked the marble.
Needless to say I was STUFFED after this. But I’m super excited that we have an idea of what we want:
Crabcake & Chicken Mediterranean plus a vegetarian option
Caesar Salad
and the hors d’oeuvres we were thinking (so far…I think we get to pick more than that):
Goat Cheese Crostini with Balsamic ReductionJumbo Shrimp with Cocktail Sauce
Brie and Herb Stuffed Mushrooms
It really finally hit me that we are PLANNING OUR FREAKING WEDDING whilst at this event. FUN FUN FUN!

That sounds fun! I love quesadillas. Are you going to have a groom's cake too? I've been to a few weddings and they have a white bride's cake and a chocolate groom's cake. Yum…chocolate.

Our tasting was super sweet too. The food was amazing and the wine tasting was fun. The wedding event coordinator was super nice and helpful, so it wasn't too awkward that she was sitting in on our little romantic meal. Glad you're excited about your venue and fooooods!

Our tasting was awesome. We invited some friends to join us and the chef made us dinner. It was completely free. We had salmon, rice, green beans, and salad. There was veggie lasagna for those who didn't want fish. We went with a different caterer for the cakes but it was all so good.

Holy cow. I'm reading this right before lunch and now I'm STARVING.
Oh,and this part: "I hate people watching me eat…I always end up missing my mouth or something." I went on a date last night and went to take a bite of my food and completely missed my mouth. I laughed it off, but . . . we'll see if he calls again. 😉

I can't believe you're doing the menu already, no fair! We have to wait until FEBRUARY. Our venue does two big ones a year. Our meal is free, and we can invite up to 4 guests, but they have to pay $20 per person. Glad the food is great there! Enjoy 🙂

Wow that sounds delicious… I just got married 3 weeks ago and we had some amazing food. We had prime rib, chicken marsala and a pasta for the vegetarians. It was buffet style but it was the faster buffet I have ever seen. We also had a cheese platter, pickle platter, deviled eggs, and broccoli salad. I'm glad you had fun at your tasting. I'm not married but I've been to several weddings and I love that you're including some vegetarian options. As a vegetarian, it's sometimes difficult when you're attending a wedding that doesn't have those options. I kind of feel like I am offending the couple by not eating what they chose. And no one wants that. Does that make sense?

That sound so fun! I didn't have much time to plan my wedding so we had our reception at our fav buffet in Vegas. Thankfully the cake was delicious!
We're planning on getting re-married (we had a quick wedding in Vegas… good ol' military), I was wondering how to do the tasting thing.

Your menu, however preliminary it is at this point in time, sounds amazing! My wedding meal was, from what I've been told, decent if dated fifteen years later. The unfortunate part is that I never got to eat a bite of it. I was too busy greeting visitors at their tables and taking pictures to eat anything. My wedding cake was carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. I did get a bite of that at least. I was warned that the bride (and groom) do not eat very much at their wedding; I just didn't believe anyone when they told me. Be warned! 😉

Yay! Another step in the process taken care of (sorta). I think the cake is the most important part of that meal! As long as you have what makes you happy there then you're good. 🙂
