I had such a fun time sharing my all time favorite movies one week during Top Ten Tuesday and was so happy with how much we all had to talk about with movies and all the recs I got! I’ve been sharing the things I’ve added to my Netflix queue but I was thinking why don’t I round up all the things I’ve been watching sporadically? I mean, movies and tv are stories too! And I just really like any form of story-telling!
Things On Netflix I’ve Watched Recently:
Now Is Good: Sidenote: Prior to watching this I had no idea this was based on a book! Anyways! Oh man did I cry. It’s about a girl who is dying from leukemia and she decides to make a list of things to do before she does (that sounds so cliche but it’s not) and just embrace the time she has. I thought it was a realistic portrayal and there was this particularly heartbreaking scene in which she’s getting ready to do a Normal Teen Thing and she’s just a normal teen girl…and then something happens where she’s reminded of how sick she is. The contrast just was heart-wrenching. It was an emotional and heartwarming movie with a cute romance. I definitely think fans of The Fault In Our Stars might want to check this one out though it IS absolutely different and unique.
Cabin In The Woods: So I really wanted to watch a scary movie around Halloween so we picked this one. It was interesting but the ending just KILLED it for us. I was laughing because it was so bad. Lots of WTF bombs being dropped by us. I liked the initial concept though I think something was lost in the fact that WE knew what was going on and the main characters didn’t. Such a weird movie. I liked it until I REALLY didn’t.
Tiny: A Story About Living Small: This one was a documentary (I really like documentaries) and it was so interesting. Will and I always complain about the lack of space in our 1 bedroom apartment and WOW these people are living in houses the size of our bedroom. It was fascinating!! I could never do it but I will be honest..it made me think about my STUFF and why I accumulate it and what I really need. It did make me start to get rid of some stuff and make moves to learn to live with less. I liked that it focused on one guy building his tiny home but was interspersed with all these interviews with people who are already doing it.
The Killing: Will and I LOVED this show. It was a little slow for Will at first and he wanted to quit but we hung in there for a couple episodes and were ADDICTED. It was SO twisty and mysterious and I loved the two main characters SO SO SO much. There were some ups and downs with this (especially as it went from AMC show to Netflix) but overall I loved it. AND THAT ENDING WAS EVERYTHING. Such a shame it couldn’t have had a longer run but I think they wrapped it up perfectly.
Short Term 12: Okay this was this summer but I HAD to include this one because it was one of the best movies I watched this year! Rainbow Rowell tweeted about it and so I was like YES OKAY. And WOW. What a beautiful movie that just gave me SO MANY FEELS. It honestly made my heart hurt but also have so much love for people who have jobs like this and are able to connect with these teens. It made ME want to invest in them.
I didn’t intend on talking about what I’m watching on tv since, in my head, these posts are just going to be movie review-ish things but I’d be remiss if I didn’t let you know what shows I’m watching on tv right now!
Current Fall Shows I’m Watching:
The Walking Dead— This is my all time favorite show! GOD I LOVE IT SO MUCH.
Revenge — I was so close to giving up on this despite how much I initially loved the first season but Will really likes it and this season has turned it around so much! I really look forward to it now and it’s always leaving me going, “NOOOO I cannot wait until next week.”
The Voice: I love this show so much and I love Gwen and Pharrell as judges! I never could make it through a season of American Idol but I’ve watched The Voice since day 1 and am OBSESSED.
</Scorpion>: I wasn’t sure about this one but we decided to give it a go because we wanted a new show and I have fallen in love with all the characters. While sometimes you have to suspend your disbelief, it’s really won me over.
About A Boy: Will wanted to watch this one last year so I said yes because it’s only 30 minutes and we fell in love. We don’t have many sitcoms that we watch but we just love this one. Always makes us laugh!
Marry Me: I did NOT intend to watch this. It was just on after another show and I got into it. And now I keep watching. It’s funny!
Nashville: Will and I are SO addicted to this show! I love the drama and um CONNIE BRITTON.
Scandal: ADDICTED. So addicted. I aspire to be Olivia Pope. Pretty much always around the house when Will asks me to do something I’m all, “Consider it handled.”
Grey’s Anatomy: I cannot quit this show. It has gotten ridiculous and kind of bad but I JUST CANNOT. Even when most of my favorite characters have left. This show USED to be brilliant but basically I can’t let it go and am just waiting for it to be over.
Parenthood: This show makes me cry EVERY EPISODE. Multiple times. I hate that it’s being cancelled after this season because it is such a quality show.
How To Get Away With Murder: I HAD to watch this because it was a Shonda Rhimes show (she’s responsible for Grey’s & Scandal) and this show is AWESOME. I’m loving it. Classic Shonda twisty stuff and OMG moments.
Reign: I’m actually a couple of episodes behind this season but I will catch up. If I believed in the term guilty pleasure, this might be it. BUT NOPE I LOVE IT PROUDLY. PRETTY DRESSES. CUTE BOYS. HISTORY. YAY.
God, when I type it out…I WATCH SO MANY SHOWS. Wow. ANYWAYS…have you seen any of these movies/shows I’ve watched recently? I don’t know how often I’ll be doing this (probably when I get a couple movies to round-up) but that was fun!!

Emmah says
Compared to me you watch an insanely SMALL amount of shows haha.
Tv shows I watch currently (well airing ones, even if they’re on break):
Reign, The Vampire Diaries, The Originals, Scorpion, Red Band Society, Jane the Virgin, The Voice, NCIS: LA, The Fosters, Switched At Birth, Pretty Little Liars, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Bones, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD (do you watch this?! because I need people to talk to it about haha), Night Shift, Awkward, Beauty and the Beast, Hart of Dixie, The 100, The Big Bang Theory, White Collar, Chasing Life, Baby Daddy, Melissa & Joey, Survivor, The Amazing Race, and So You Think You Can Dance.
I honestly know there’s more than that, but those are the ones that I can think of off the top of my head!
The Voice is soooo good this season! My favorite are definitely Taylor John Williams, Taylor Phelan, and Reagan James.
Scorpion!! I love that show so much, omg. I consider Elyes Gabel one of my weird crushes. Fun fact: He’s actually English (he’s so good at the American accent!)
Jamie says
OMG HOW DID I FORGET SURVIVOR. I even have Wine Wednesday with my friend Kelsey to watch it! I also watch PLL but didn’t include it since it’s not on right now. ALSO I watch Big Brother in the summer!
HUH totally did not know he was English!!
Amanda says
I feel the exact same way about Grey’s and Reign! Though, I just started Grey’s so it’s all relatively new to me. Still, the plane crash KILLED ME! I just can’t. And I’m only a couple episodes into Reign. I need to watch it more!
Jamie says
I am jealous you are watching it all for the first time! BUT AH INTENSE. I really want to go back and watch up until the George thing. Pretty much after that is when it went a little downhill. But that plane crash? I STILL SOB WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT.
Patty @ Patty's Book Corner says
I’ve kind of given up on Revenge now. I loved the first three seasons but now that it’s more focussed on Victoria I’m not that into it. Maybe I’ll pick it back up again when I don’t have to watch it on my laptop but we’ll see. I’m totally loving /scorpion though! Love me some nerdy people programs. I really want to watch How To Get Away With Murder. I’ll have to keep an eye out for when it comes out here.
Jamie says
Yeah that’s the only sucky thing is there is sooo much Victoria. I’ve been enjoying it nonetheless. GOD I WANT TO PUNCH HER SMUG FACE THOUGH. YES I just love that Scorpion bunch to pieces. And def check out How To Get Away With Murder! Viola Davis is amaaaazing and it will be a crime if she doesn’t win an award for that show!
Marianne @ Boricuan Bookworms says
How to Get Away With Murder! That show is so amazing! I love all the twists and turns. Can’t wait for this week’s episode. Have you read Dangerous Girls? That’s what the show feels like! Also, Viola Davis NEEDS TO win an award. She is the Queen.
As for me, I don’t watch many shows that are currently airing except The Walking Dead, Arrow, The Flash, and HTGAWM. I’m trying to catch up on Supernatural on Netflix but it’s a difficult process since there are so many seasons. Gah.
Jamie says
RIGHT? It’s just so twisty and thrilling. And yes…omg Dangerous Girls was amaaaazing! If Viola doesn’t win an award I am boycotting all tv. (haha okay not really probably but I will riot in the streets).
I need to check out Arrow! And I started Supernatural but Will won’t ever watch it with me so it’s slowgoing for me to find time to watch it!
Rebecca says
Jamie, may I say, you have fabulous taste in shows! Also, you have now made my TV/movie to-watch-list that much longer. #noregrets. Seriously, I love TV so much. The Walking Dead was already on my list, but now I feel like I better bump it up if you say it’s your favourite! Love Shonda Rhimes and her shows and I’m currently loving How To Get Away With Murder, so good!
Scandal, Greys, Parenthood <3
Jamie says
Why thank you! And sorry not sorrrrrry. YOU NEED TO WATCH WALKING DEAD OMG. GAHHHH MY HEART HAS BEEN RIPPED OUT SO MANY TIMES BUT THIS SHOW.
Trina says
I keep up with TWD, Reign, and Nashville from your list. Though I’m from Nashville so most of my watching the show is just me rolling my eyes, lol (but that’s not to say I hate it, bc I keep watching). I’ve seen all of the rest of your shows too but either couldn’t get hooked, gave up, or just got lazy and haven’t been keeping up.
I got addicted to the show Selfie. I SO wanted to hate it. It looked (and is) so dang corny. But then nothing was on and I watched the pilot and realized it is a retelling of Pygmalion and also I know the lead actress from Doctor Who, and so it became a show I cannot quit. I’ve missed some episodes, but the idea of the modern Pygmalion effect in terms of selfies and social media really works for me. Totally a guilty pleasure, if we believed in guilty pleasures. 😉
I also recently got super into Jane the Virgin. Another show I thought I would hate but then several blogs started recapping it and I was hearing how people actually loved it and I gave it a shot and it kills with me each week with hilarity and emotions.
Errr, I feel like my taste in TV is totally questionable since I mentioned some cheeseballs in this comment.
Not really a show or movie, but my friend got me hooked on the podcast Serial of the real life murder mystery. I listened to like 5 hours of it yesterday.
Jamie says
Haha I can imagine how you feel as a Nashville dweller!
I have been wanting to try Selfie!! I did NOT know it was a modern day Pymalion and that makes me want to watch it even MORE now..so thanks for that! And Jane the Virgin…I’ve been hearing good things!!!
Valeria @ A Touch of Book Madness says
OMG! I love how to get away with murder. I don’t have the time to catch too many shows, so generally I just binge watch the season. But HTGAWM is amazing! I don’t miss for the world! I love it!
Jamie says
RIGHT? It’s become my newest show to really look forward to! I cannot WAIT to see how it plays out.
Kristie says
Can we just talk about that scene in Cabin in the Woods where Christ Hemsworth just flies into the barrier? That scene killed me! My sisters and I couldn’t stop laughing. Pretty sure we watched that scene multiple times.
Jamie says
HAHAHHAAHH.
Kay @ It's a Book Life says
haha I LOVE your reaction of Cabin in The Woods. I can totally see why you felt that way. It is a weird movie. I however loved it, but I also watched the whole thing as a type of satire on horror movies and that is probably why I loved it so. 🙂
Emily N says
OHMYGOSH I love The Walking Dead. And it’s killing me right now because with my husband being gone I had to swear not to watch it, so I’ve missed the last two episodes (soon to be three since he doesn’t get back til mid-next week) and it’s just killing me. I have to like avoid all forms of social media on Sunday nights because I just can’t handle it. They are just sitting on my dvr taunting me. I am also super addicted to Once Upon a Time. It’s cheesy and I love it, so much.
I also love scandal, though I am super behind. Basically I am super behind on everything I watch. I gave up on Revenge. I mean I liked it, but once they put the 3rd season on Netflix I just felt no need to keep watching it. I may need to check out Marry Me. I realize that my TV shows are lacking in the comedies, and with Parks and Recreation ending after this next season (my favorite comedy EVER) I need something new.
Short Term 12 has been on my list on Netflix for so long, I seriously need to just get on it and watch it. I find that I watch way more TV shows on Netflix than movies (currently binging on Hart of Dixie and Gilmore Girls). I have gone back and forth about Now Is Good, but I’m thinking I should definitely look into it more and will probably add it to my list. I wish I could say I’ve watched some super good movies lately, but honestly…I haven’t. I watched In A World, and it was interesting but not necessarily my cup of tea. I should probably actually attempt to watch the movies that are on my list.
Tiff @ Mostly YA Lit says
I also watched Cabin in the Woods for the first time this year on Halloween – I liked it. Even the ending. I think the whole thing was meant to be just a crazy spoof of other horror movies, and the ending really worked when I thought of it that way. And instead of being scary, it just made me laugh (this might also be because we had to stop and start a zillion times because of trick-or-treaters).
I watched the first two seasons of The Killing and I liked them, but I couldn’t watch after what they did, real-time, to the fans. They had advertised widely that Rosie Larson’s killer would be found at the end of season 1, and then totally broke faith with fans. Normally, that kind of stuff doesn’t bother me, but it really did in the height of the show.
I need to check out Short Term 12. And isn’t Walking Dead amazing? Such an impressive story.
Britt @ Not So Teen Reads says
The book that Now is Good is based on is probably the saddest book I’ve ever read. I remember just not being able to stop crying. I really want to watch it to see how the two compare. Also, I am totally obsessed with Reign and Nashville. The hair game on those shows alone is enough of a reason to watch.
Michelle @ Unraveling Books says
Have your tried watching Selfie? That show is so cute! I’m absolutely obsessed with How To Get Away With Murder! I watch Stalker as well but that one has gone downhill since the premiere 🙁 I also have been marathoning Scandal on Netflix and I really like the show now! I could never get into it before! BUT I want to constantly smack Fitz because he is the biggest douchebag ever!
Angie @Angela's Anxious Life says
I watch a lot of shows too. But honestly it is such a nice getaway from the stresses of normal life. Gets my mind of things. I tend to watch more supernatural type shows. Grimm, Sleepy Hollow, and some superhero shows Arrow, Flash, Gotham. Love TV.
Lisa says
I loved The Killing also! So sad to see that one end! I’m also addicted to Scandal and Revenge. I’m a couple of weeks behind at the moment, but I hope to catch up this weekend!
Maggie @ macarons & paperbacks says
I’m with you on Cabin in the Woods. It was super scary and intriguing and then the ending happens and I’m like, “Whaaa…?”
Kayla (The Bookish Owl) says
OH MY GOD I SO WANT TO TWEET YOU RIGHT NOW BECAUSE I NEED TO FANGIRL WITH SOMEONE OVER SCANDAL AND HOW TO GET AWAY WITH MURDER! GAH, SHONDALAND IS SOOOOOOOO GOOD! [P.S. What did you think about that scene with Asher and ****** last episode?]
Debbie @ Snuggling on the Sofa says
I adore Now is Good! Such an emotional film. Intrigued about Short Term 12. Will add it to my list! FYI, you watch a lot of tv 😛
Asheley (@BookwormAsheley) says
I added Tiny to my Netflix Queue like a couple of weeks ago maybe but I WILL NOT BEGIN IT UNTIL I FINISH BREAKING BAD. I WON’T I WON’T. I’m **GOING** to finish Breaking Bad. I think I reached the point of no return last night and it’s painful! xo
Lisa @ Bookish Broads says
TV FOR DAYSSSS (I love this and you)
threegoodrats says
You summed up my feelings about Cabin in the Woods really well 🙂
I also really like The Killing – I had kind of forgotten about that show!
I am way behind on The Walking Dead but also really like it. The hilarious thing is that even though I find those zombies weirdly slow and easy to kill and not scary, every time I watch it I have nightmares about zombies. Some of them have been kind of awesome, like a scary movie. But I love the show for the post-apocalyptic aspects, and the way the people band together to survive – it’s so awesome. I need to get back to it!
La Coccinelle says
I like the new judges on The Voice; they seem to be a good fit with Adam and Blake.
I know what you mean about Grey’s Anatomy. It’s one of those shows that jumped the shark many seasons ago… and yet, like some weird zombie show that refuses to die, it just keeps on going! I watched it religiously in the beginning, and then quit for a few seasons. I’ve been watching it again this season because there’s nothing else on in that time slot. Holy cow… a lot has happened!
I tried to watch About A Boy, but it just didn’t hold my interest. I much prefer the original movie (with a very young Nicholas Hoult)!
