Top Ten Tuesday, as always, is hosted at my other blog — The Broke & the Bookish
This week’s topic: Ten Series I Still Need To Finish (Where the Books Are Already All Out)
We all know I suck at finishing series (no matter HOW much I’m loving series). I even tried an operation SUCK LESS AT SERIES and I’ve had minimal success. I still just feel like there are sooo many loose ends in my life because I’m awful at finishing them. I should totally just go on a series binge but it’s been awhile.
1. Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead: I’ve read the first two picks and really enjoy it but need to get my butt moving.
2. Harry Potter series: I KNOW I KNOW I AM A DISAPPOINTMENT TO THE YOUNG ADULT WORLD OR MAYBE THE WHOLE WORLD OF READERS. I have read book 1 and that is all.
3. Divergent series by Veronica Roth: I’ve only read Divergent! So torn on if I should finish — some people say don’t bother and others say YOU MUST.
4. The Mortal Instrument series by Cassandra Clare: I thought the first book was just okay but I haven’t been super motivated to move on.
5. The Grisha series by Leigh Bardugo: I really loved Shadow & Bone and just really need to get my crap together to finish.
6. The Madman’s Daughter series by Megan Shepard:I really loved the first book but got nervous because mixed reviews for the next one.
7. Fire & Thorns series by Rae Carson: I really liked the first book but I don’t know why I never got around to reading the next two.
8. The Fury Trilogy by Elizabeth Miles: I loved the first two books and was SO excited for book 3 but never got around to getting it!
9. The Legend series by Marie Lu: I freaking loved Legend and Prodigy but was so scared to move on to Champion!!
10. The Chemical Garden series by Lauren DeStefano: Again..super loved the first two books but then got scared to move to the last.
So tell me…what series do you still need to finish?? Are you good at finishing series promptly or are you like me??

Eve says
OMG Yes Harry Potter, Vampire Academy (heart me some Dimitri), Legend, Grisha, and Mortal Instruments they get better as the series goes on but the Infernal Devices ones I think might even be better
Brittany says
Oh my god, The Grisha trilogy is my favorite of all time! You have to read those books. You’re missing out on a book boyfriend that doesn’t make an entrance until Siege and Storm!
And Harry Potter..you have to! The movies are great but the books are just amazing. You need to read them!!
I also read The Madman’s Daughter and haven’t continued the series for the same reason as you. Plus, I’m a huge wimp so the creepiness isn’t really my thing to begin with lol.
Great list =)
Lucy @ The Reading Date says
I hear ya- I suck at finishing series too. We should start a support group. I did finish the VA and Legend series though and think they are very worthwhile!
Chrissi Reads says
I’m getting better at finishing series, but I still have so many more on my TBR! I want to read The Girl of Fire and Thorns though. I’ve heard great things.
Anne @HeadFullofBooks says
Oh, I forgot to list THE MADMAN’s DAUGHTER. I really do want to finish that series. Good list. We certainly have a lot of reading ahead of us.

Diana @ Booking an Adventure says
I loooove the Chemical Garden series. The last book was just as good as the rest but it’s just a bit depressing (but that shouldn’t be a surprise) I think you’ll really enjoy it!
I also suck at finishing series. If I get really annoyed at a character there’s a good chance that I’ll take a break from the book. It’s a really bad habit 😂
Michelle says
You sound like me. I usually dislike series finales so I get nervous to read them.
Marie says
Finishing Harry Potter at this point almost seems moot, unless you also haven’t seen the movies either. While a few things were either left out or altered, the gist is still the same.
Legend almost destroyed me, especially the ending of Prodigy.
TMI gets better and better with each book. I hope you like the way things end, and if you haven’t already I hope you read and enjoy The Infernal Devices, it’s better than TMI.
The Grisha trilogy has kind of a bitter sweet ending, depending on who you like more. You meet a certain character in book 2 that a lot of fans of the book like more than Mal. Personally, I was torn.
Personally, I don’t think it’s that important to finish Divergent. You will only be setting yourself up for disappointment. And it’s not the big spoiler that a lot of people gave away Im talking about, but more to do with the explanation of what it means to be a Divergent. It was pretty underwhelming in my opinion.
Sorry for such a long comment

Great list! Don’t apologise for not having read Harry Potter; in some ways I envy you, because you get to read the books for the very first time. 😀
Nessa says
I am horrible at finishing series, it usually takes me months to get the next book after I finished one. I also have the Vampire Academy series, and Champion on my list! And personally, I think you should just try out the second book in the Divergent series to see whether you want to read on or not – don’t listen to other people’s opinions! ^^ Here is my TTT for today!
Bieke @ Istyria book blog says
The Grisha Trilogy is awesome but seriously, Harry Potter? O__O
Paula N says
I love VA series and the spinoff, Bloodlines. Fire and Thorns is one of my favorites. It took me awhile, but I loved Champion when I finally read it. Divergent and Insurgent are great, but I would skip Allegiant. And HP is amazing! Good luck!
Jazz @ Jazmin Jade Reviews says
VA gets better the more you read so I strongly suggest you get to it! Once you get going you barely notice just how many books there are to get through. I hope you enjoy them 🙂
Claire says
You can’t not finish the grisha trilogy also fire and thorns a couple of my favourites!
Greg says
I’m the same way with Divergent- just read the first two. I don’t know if I’ll read the last one- but I’ll see the movie LOL.
Milka@ReadReadRead says
I suck at finishing series too. I always keep telling myself that I should not start new series before I finish with the ones I’m unfinished with, but that never goes according to plan…
Quite many here on your list I need to finish too – Vampire Academy, Legend series, Grisha series, Divergent…
Rachel Writes Things says
I also need to finish Vampire Academy – I read the first one but need to complete the series. Oops!! and DUDE, HARRY POTTER? GET ON THAAAAAT.
Lizzie says
FINISH HARRY POTTER!! I’ve finished The Chemical Garden, The Madman’s Daughter, and Grisha trilogies. There are some that I need to finish that you have on you list, like Vampire Academy, Divergent, and Legend. I hope you finish some of them soon!
Jenna @ JMill Wanders says
HARRY POTTER HOW COULD YOU!?!?! Better get moving. 🙂
To be fair, I haven’t read any of these other series you mentioned, so I guess you’re off the hook.
Jen says
I’m making my way through Harry Potter right now. I’m currently on book 6. I have started listening to the audio books. They are really good!
looloolooweez says
I haven’t finished the Grisha series yet either! And I really liked the first book, so IDK what my problem is. You should definitely consider finishing the Fire & Thorns series soon. Super worth the time. Plus Rae Carson’s new book is due out this month!
Brenda says
I’m still wanting to do a re-read of Harry Potter and feeling bad that I haven’t got to that yet. Hope you’ll have a chance to read it one day. I tend to get close to finishing a series, but have that one to two allusive books left. My Top 10 list
Ely @ Tea & Titles says
I LOVE the Fury trilogy but no one ever talks about it. I don’t think I’ve ever talked to anyone who’s read it before. You’ve just completely made my day. And yes, read Eternity.
My list
Emma @ Emma Likes Books says
I’m with you on the Harry Potter Series and The Mortal Instruments. I’ve only read book one in both, but I do really want to read the rest of both series. The only series I’ve read out of the ones you listed is the Grisha Trilogy, and I loved it! If anything you need to get to that one first.
Paula says
I didn’t realize I was so bad at finishing series until I did this challenge. I love the Harry Potter series! I’ve read it so many times. I’m with you on Mortal Instruments though. I couldn’t get past the first few chapters of the first book.
Nicolette @ A Read-aholic says
I need to finish VA and Harry Potter too!
I won’t be finishing Divergent and Mortal Instruments due to lotsss of spoiling
But some of these like the Grisha Trilogy I need to start. Nice list:)

If you’re going to binge read a series, I recommend starting with Harry Potter… 🙂
Jacque says
I just finished the Harry Potter series last week and Vampire Academy a couple of months ago. I’ve also finished the chemical garden trilogy. All are definitely worth reading. I still need to finish Divergent and the MI series. I hope you enjoy them’

Emily says
Oh gosh, the last book in the Legend series was FANTASTIC! I kind of loved how it ended because the entire time I was like preparing for THE WORST. I am always nervous with that last book in a series, but man do I trust Marie Lu! I will just say Harry Potter is worth it too, but I bet that others have said MORE than enough on that subject. I also think that reading Allegiant is worth it. I’m assuming you had spoilers which makes it hard to really want to read, but I honestly was ok with how it ended (after my initial freak out). I am in the minority I know… Other than that we have very few in common. I definitely need to finish the Fire and Thorns series (I loved that first book and have no clue as to why I haven’t picked up the next one).
And I feel you on the Mortal Instruments. I read through book 4, and upon closing that book I asked myself why quite a few times. It just was something I completely and totally lost interest in.
Lisa @ Reading, Writing, and Random Musings says
I also haven’t finished Harry Potter and Divergent, even though I really, really want to! I’m hoping to finish both series sometime in the not so distant future!
Lulu says
First of all, you should seriously finish Harry Potter! I’m not sure if The Mortal Instruments is worth it because the fourth and fifth book are not the greatest, maybe you could read until the third one? That one was originally the final book in the series. On the contrary, the Legend trilogy is freaking fantastic. Champion is an awesome ending, as opposed to final books like Allegiant. If you’ve already read and enjoyed Legend and Prodigy, then there’s absolutely no reason to keep putting Champion off.
Carrie S. says
oh my goodness, you must finish the HP books – so worth the read! My TTT
Ginger @ GReads! says
Girl, you and I are in the same Harry Potter boat (I did read books 2 & 3 though). I feel so out of the loop in our community sometimes because I haven’t finished reading the series yet. It’s a must for me though!
Trina says
As someone who didn’t like the Divergent series (from the start) I still think you should finish it! The ending (which is why I’m sure some people have told you to just skip it) caused such a controversy in the community I think it would be good to get the full feel for it and see if you like it or not.
The Mortal Instruments definitely got better. It took me 2 tries to get through book 1 and I wasn’t a fan but it really improved after that.
You must read Champion! It was one of the better endings to a dystopian series I’ve read. It’s realistic, sad yet hopeful, and actually shows some results and outcomes in the world.
I’m hoping to finish Jessica Darling, Pretty Little Liars (finally), and Percy Jackson by the end of the year. And possibly finish up the books that are out in the Song of Ice and Fire series, but LOL, one can dream.
Cynthia @ Bingeing On Books says
Divergent, Legend and Chemical Garden are wonderful series! Legend is amazing. I love Marie Lu!
Rebecca says
I’m bad at finishing series too…I’ve been putting off Strange and Ever After for over a year, and I need to finish the Daughter of Smoke and Bone series, His Fair Assassin, and a bunch more that I can’t even remember right now. Sigh.
From your list, I think if you’re going to pick any to finish, definitely read the rest of the Grisha trilogy, Fire and Thorns, Chemical Garden, and the Legend trilogy! And Harry Potter of course. I’m probably in the minority but I thought the Mortal Instruments series got worse as it went on. As for Divergent, as some people said it might not be a bad idea to read it and get the whole experience but I was disappointed with the last book in general (and not just because of how it ended).
Anyway, good luck with finishing your series!
Mallory @ The Leaning Tower of Tomes says
Keep reading the Harry Potter books! They get really dark and complex and are just awesome to binge read. I liked Divergent, but barely remember anything from Insurgent and I hated Allegiant. :/ I’ve only read City of Bones and agree that it was fine, but nothing special — though apparently the series just gets better and better. I might tackle the rest of that series sometime… I really liked the Grisha books, and book 2 was my favorite! And finish the Legend series! The first book was my favorite, but I did like Champion a lot (Prodigy, while I still loved it, was my least favorite in the series.) Whew, looks like we’ve got a lot of reading to do! 😀
Pui-man says
You REALLY need to finish Harry Potter. That should be your #1 priority! I also have only read Divergent, but I never felt the desire to read the rest of the series.
Holly says
I am also the worst reader ever, I haven’t read Harry Potter! I read the first one (like you) but then never finished the rest. I feel like I can’t call myself a true book lover until I finish them! Also, I’m scared to read the last book in the Legend series too! Everyone keeps warning me about it and I’m over here hoping that if I put it off, I can just pretend everything works out the way I want it to!
Jenn says
This is one of my favorite top ten posts ever! I have read all of Vampire Academy, I highly recommend you finish the series because I thought the books just kept getting better. I loved it so much that I even read the whole spinoff Bloodlines series (I can’t decide which series I like more!!). Just don’t watch the Vampire Academy movie- probably in the top ten worst movies I have ever seen.
Please finish Harry Potter- seriously one of my favorite series of all time.
I too haven’t finished the Divergent series-but only the last 50 pages. I have not heard great things about the ending so I’m avoiding it at all costs.
And the Mortal Instruments- I too, like you, didn’t make it past the first book. I can’t seem to get behind this series.
Claire says
My coblogger hasn’t finished HP either and I just don’t get how!
Jamie says
I love the clouds here! You have some great series to finish! Harry Potter, Madman’s Daughter, etc. Grisha trilogy is one I really want to read soon. Happy Reading!

I’m so glad I’m not the only that hasn’t finished Harry Potter! I’ve read the first 4 books and I need to read the other 3 but I really, really don’t want the series to be over! >.< THE STRUGGLE.
Erin @ Paperbackstash says
I’ve also only read the first Harry Potter.
I actually am a series addict though and usually have no issues finishing. Big re-reader of favorites. But with certain ones there is that procrastination for various reasons.
Kate says
I am the opposite of you in regards to finishing series. If I start a series I absolutely have to finish, and I have to read all the books consecutively. As a result I tend to be very hesitant and picky when starting a new series, especially anything longer than a trilogy. I am pretty sure I have passed up on a number of amazing series because I didn’t want to get sucked in. This is the reason I haven’t read the A Song of Ice and Fire and Outlander series!
Tasya says
I’m also really teribble at finishing a series! I only read the 1st vampire academy book, 1st lunar chronicles book and someone spoiled the Champion ending so I’m not really motivated to read it…
