This week’s topic: Top Ten Books I’m Not Sure I Want To Read For Various Reasons
The rest of the Mortal Instruments series by Cassie Clare: If you read my Operation Suck Less At Series post this past week you would see I had this one under “series I’m not sure if I want to finish”. I’m so conflicted. Like I enjoyed book 1 enough but I’m not IN LOVE like so many people are and then it seems like this series goes ON AND ON and even some fans are like STOP ALREADY.
Outlander by Diana Gabaldon: I’ve had Outlander on my shelf for FOREVER. I really had good intentions of getting to it…but it’s pretty long. Very long commitment. And then the show happened and everyone is raving about it and I’m SO CURIOUS ABOUT THE SHOW. Is it worth reading?!
Dorothy Must Die by Danielle Page: So I have this dilemma. Typically I am the reader who just wants to read a book or not and I don’t pay much attention to online dramas or what the author is like personality wise. But I really, really hate the idea of James Frey’s Full Fathom Five thing has going on and this book is a part of it. I WANT to read it and was really excited about as a reader….but then once I found out it was a FFF book I’ve been trying to reconcile if I’ll read it or not. (and this goes for other FFF books as well). I just don’t know where I stand yet. I want to read books I want to read but I also don’t want to support something like that. But who does my lack of support hurt? Does it hurt these authors? IDK. I’m still trying to figure out my stance here.
Freedom by Jonathan Franzen: So I got this book when I still read a lot of literary fiction (I still LOVE literary fiction) but I’m not going to lie…I wanted it just because I felt like I should want to read it. I don’t know if I really have an interest in it if I’m REALLY honest with myself.
The Murder Complex by Lindsay Cummings: I’ve conflicted about this one because I really was excited about it but then reviews by trusted people make me feel like it might not be for me either. And then there’s other reviews of people that loved it. COMMON PROBLEM HERE = books I’m excited about vs. reviews coming in. This is why sometimes I have a love/hate relationship with social media/Goodreads. ALWAYS INFLUENCED.
17 First Kisses by Rachael Allen: This one was getting some awful reviews so I was pretty sure I was going to pass on the ARC I was sent but then it started getting some REALLY good reviews from people I trust and their thoughts (especially when they countered the bad things people were saying about it) made me consider picking it up again. WHAT SAY YOU, READERS?
Game of Thrones by George R. Martin: Listen, we all know I’m a new fantasy ADDICT but I’m not sure I am ready to tackle this series. IT’S SO LONG AND IT’S SO LEGIT IT SEEMS. But I really want to watch the tv show but I’m like OKAY MAYBE I SHOULD READ THE BOOKS FIRST…but it might take me until the rest of my life to read them.
Broken Hearts, Fences and Other Things To Mend by Katie Finn: I hate that this is even something I’m contemplating. Like it makes me want to cry. Katie Finn’s altar ego is Morgan Matson. MORGAN MATSON IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS. (Seriously, check out Amy & Roger, Second Chance Summer and Since You’ve Been Gone). It’s just that this book hasn’t gotten the kind of rave reviews that her Morgan books get and I just am not sure if I want to possibly taint my 5 star rating streak with her books. I WOULD FEEL AWFUL AND LIFE WOULD NOT BE RIGHT. So maybe I’ll just stick to Morgan books?
Wicked by Gregory Maguire: I loooooved the musical so so so much and then I bought it at a used book sale and was excited and then I heard that the book is waaaaay different and the people I talked to didn’t really like the book. I’m intrigued because it seems maybe a bit darker? I don’t know what to dooo!
The rest of the Gone series by Michael Grant: I didn’t LOVE it but I want to know the answers! And then Ellie told us some of what happened in the rest of the series (upon our request during book club) and then I kind of got intrigued again. It’s quite a few books so I just can’t decide if I want to commit.
So tell me…have you read any of the books on my list? Can you tell me if you think I should read them or not based on your knowledge of me and also what I’ve said about why I’m up in the air with them?

I’m also unsure about The Murder Complex and 17 First Kisses! And I would love to finish TMI series, but I just haven’t had the interest in doing that. I didn’t like that series as much as TID, but I’m still excited about Lady Midnight. Also I’m very curious about Broken Hearts, Fences and Other Things To Mend. I loved Since You’ve Been Gone. And Outlander! I want to read the book (but didn’t know it was so long) before watching the show. Because I just can’t do that out of order. 🙂

It’s the next Shadowhunter book, I think? It’s part of The Dark Artifices series and is publishing in March 2015. I know so many people are over the Shadowhunters, but I’m excited about it. Who knows? Maybe if I actually read the rest of the TMI series (I’ve only read first 3), I’d be done with them too. But I’m going to give it a chance.

I’ve been contemplating picking Outlander back up because of the show hype. I read the first one in high school and then never finished with the series.
Dorothy Must Die is pretty much just average so you’re really not missing out on anything. I at least wasn’t impressed at all. It’s way overhyped imo.
I would say read 17 First Kisses. I grabbed it from the library recently because of the love certain bloggers have for it and my trust in them.
Game of Thrones is intense.
Wicked is nothing like the musical and not particularly good. His books all have a certain ick factor to them that make them hard for me to read. Wicked’s the only one I’ve finished but I’ve tried others and just couldn’t get through them.

Outlander…I’m with you. I might just watch it *hides* I didn’t realize Dorothy was a part of FFF until after I read it. It makes me sad, b/c Danielle is so nice! *sigh* I love Lindasy, but THE MURDER COMPLEX isn’t my thing…I want to read it for her…buuuuuut. Mmm, I didn’t care for 17 First Kisses, BUT I am not a super contemporary person SO! Game of Thrones…I am waiting until all of the books are out. I decided that when he was still writing Book Five, because I can’t re-read something so long! Wait, wait what? Katie Finn and Morgan Matson are the same person? I DID NOT KNOW THAT!!!! Is there a reason for the pen name? I just found out this book is the first in a trilogy, soooo I may wait for all three to be out? WICKED is more literary. Are the people not enjoying it literary readers? It’s also much more political! I read it back in HS and it got me loving villains! And…I am with you about finishing GONE. My co-worker told me about the last 2 or 3 books and I was like meeeeeeeeeh.

And yeah, that’s my issue with another FFF book…loved the author and want to support her but GAH.
And yes htey are the same! I think it’s because Katie Finn is geared a little younger and more light reads? I’m not sure really!

I hate FFF. HATE. I just heard recently that something started out as FFF before being released and picked up, but I can’t for the life of me think of who/what now. But it really surprised me!

I know I’ve told you this before but YES, read the Gone series! I started TMI but never finished CITY OF BONES so there’s that. You’ll probably be okay if you pass up THE MURDER COMPLEX and DOROTHY MUST DIE.

Broken Hearts and other Katie Finn books are very different than Morgan Matson books, i think if you go into it thinking its a Morgan book then you will be disappointed. But it is still fun and cute and awesome, so if you can think of it as a different author then maybe you could read it. I liked it.

I really, REALLY enjoyed this post – Super Fun lol! I’m with you 1000% on Game of Thrones & Outlander; I want I WANT to read them, but both seem so daunting….
Regarding finishing the Mortal Instruments series, I’m definitely doing this but I DID love the others. Something that really helped me with these books was Audible.com, lol, but seriously, I did most of these either solely on audio or as a book/audiobook combo – the narrator is fabulous & I’m pretty sure they keep the same one throughout (hate it when they change it up midstream with a series!)
Lastly, what’s FFF? I feel so left out! I’m going to Google it asap because Dorothy Must Die is one that I REALLY want to read!

Full Fathom Five is basically this fiction factory in which James Frey makes a shit ton of money and barely pays them anything and there are all these crazy conditions and stuff. The blog Snuggly Oranges has a good post about it.

I know I’m in the minority but I didn’t like Outlander. *ducks head* I loved Jamie but something about the time travel irrated me. I usually like time travel so IDK. I will never read GOT. Way too long and I’ve got books I’m way more interested in reading. Which is strange cause I like fantasy.

Great list! I’m with you on Outlander … I’ve had it sitting on my shelf for so freakin’ long. Even my mom (who doesn’t read much at all) has already read it! I totally thought I’d love it until I read Hannah @ So Obsessed With’s review of it a few weeks ago, which opened my eyes to what the book is really about. So I’m back on the fence. BUT another blogger, whose reviews I trust, absolutely RAVED about the series, so I think I will give it a chance … at some point.
With regard to Game of Thrones, since I think you’re a more tentative fantasy-reader like me, I’d recommend checking out the show first. I absolutely LOVE the show and have seen all four seasons, but just started reading the series this year. They’re honking commitments, but so worth it. I don’t think I would have fully grasped all of the content in the book if it wasn’t for the show (there’s SO MANY characters that it really helps to be able to picture them in my head). Plus, going back to the beginning of the story after watching a few seasons is helping me to get a more in-depth understanding of the plot. I read the book and listened to the audio at the same time (listening while driving to and from work and then reading the print copy at home, or to finish my chapter after driving) and found that I got through the book a bit quicker that way. The size is daunting!

I debate about continuing the TMI series all the time. I think I’ve read like 3 of them when I very first got into YA so they were new and different for me and totally opened up the YA fantasy world for me, but I didn’t fall in love with any of the characters enough to really want to dedicate that much more reading time to all the books that keep coming out.
Game of Thrones is one of those series that I want to read just because I think I would feel so incredibly accomplished afterwards…but for now I’ll just stick with the show.
I started reading Outlander at the beginning of the year. I read a bit then take a break and pick something else up then pick up Outlander again. It’s helped make it not feel so heavy and I’m really enjoying it so far. Though I cannot wait to see the show. It looks fantastic.

Yes that’s the thing about TMI is I didn’t care one bit about the characters but I did enjoy the plot and stuff! SIGH. It’s so hard to decide what to do with my precious reading time!

I was recommended by a friend I trusted to try the Wicked book, and I so intensely hated it that I can’t even think of picking up another of his books (which is a bit sad cause his take on Snow White I kinda wanted to read) and I personally didn’t care for the mortal instruments series, couldn’t get into it. GOT I’ve heard is good, but also that it’s pretty graphic which is why I haven’t started it yet.

Love love love Outlander AND Game of Thrones! I think they’re really worth it, especially Outlander. It’s not a difficult read even with the length. Really compelling. I will say, the first ep seemed like a great adaptation so you cooould get away with just the show for now 😉 But I used to love long books. I read each series in the span of months. Don’t chuck them off your shelf yet 🙂 I’m wth you on mortal instruments though. Read the first and wasn’t impressed.

I feel the same way about Dorothy Must Die. I didn’t know it was that bad until I read a couple of articles about James and FFF, and I definitely don’t want to be supporting something like that. But if you really feel like you want to read it, I would suggest borrowing it from the library? It’s hard because you want to support the author but not the publishing company. I think for me, I’ll just borrow it from the library if I really want to read it.

Yeah I think the library is a good idea rather than buying it. I got it as an ARC so I’m not worried about the purchasing part of it just the promoting and potentially getting others to buy it? I don’t want to not support the author but SO TORN.

Well, I’ve never read other books that you’ve mentioned here, Jamie, but I’m sure I will never want to read any books from Cassandra Clare’s TMI series anymore. I don’t know why, I just cannot find the will to continue. It’s a different case with her Infernal Devices series, though! I love every one of them. Mainly because Will Herondale, heheheh
By the way, I was really surprised to know that Katie Finn is, in fact, Morgan Matson, because honestly, I see only very few people give good reviews or ratings for Katie Finn’s books. I mean, she IS Morgan Matson! She has written three super wonderful YA books that people always talked about. I’ve never tried her Katie Finn’s books though so I can’t really judge it, it’s just amusing to me is all.

And I sooo feel you on James Frey. I was super excited about Dorothy Must Die until I heard about his connection to it. I think if I ever get to a place where I have the time and inclination to read DMD, I’ll borrow it from the library or from a friend.

If I were to choose just one book on this list to force you to read, it would be Game of Thrones. Hands down. No doubts whatsoever. It’s just such a rich, enveloping series. Unfortunately Martin’s prose isn’t the most spectacular, but it’s totally worth it. Especially if you want to watch the show – you are aware of so much more if you’ve read the books.
I’d recommend Wicked, too. I do agree with your friends that it’s vastly different from the musical – much darker in tone and it goes in a very different direction than the musical after the characters leave Shiz. It’s worth reading, in my opinion.
I wouldn’t bother with Cassandra Clare, tbh. She’s a known serial plagiarist and her books aren’t worth your time or money. I read her first two or three books before I discovered more information about her ethics, and they were quick reads but not very memorable at all. She has some seriously vocal fans though, I’ll give her that!

I’ve only read City of Bones and City of Ashes and it took me a while to finish City of Ashes and I didn’t want to continue. Thankfully, the series is over. However, I might continue it one day. I guess it’s going to be an okay series for me, as well.
I read The Murder Complex and this time it’s actually good to be influenced by social media and Goodreads because this book is not worth it. Predictable storyline pretty much ruined it for me and then there’s the instalove. Sigh.
No idea about the rest of the books you mentioned, though. Heee.

The Game of Thrones books are long, but they’re (mostly, aside from a bit in the middle where they all go off wandering the countryside) action-packed and consequently pretty quick reads. It took me about 2-3 days per book. But if you can hold off, I’d wait until they’re all published, or you just join the rest of us in the waiting game 😉

I started Game of Thrones, but stopped when they murdered a beloved pet dog about half way through the first book. I cannot stand dog deaths in a book or movie.
I ordered Dorothy Must Die from the library as soon as I heard about it, and was disappointed. It was very intro-y instead of a complete work. It was only afterwards, looking around on the internet why, that I found out it was supposed to be the first of a series. Seriously, why is this acceptable/common lately? Each book should be a complete work, not just an intro. So if you really want to read it, you might wait until a couple others of the series is out.
Wicked was weird and confusing. I would just enjoy the musical and don’t pick up the book.

I HATE THAT. I read a book this summer that I thought was a standalone (seriously never saw anthing on Goodreads or anywhere) and come to find out it’s going to have a companion book and I’m like AHHHH. STOP TRICKING ME.

I’m going to have to google this Full Fathom Five business I guess, because I have no idea what you’re talking about!! As for Game of Thrones, I highly recommend the audio… the narrator is GREAT, and it’s a lot easier to follow along with all the characters that way. After a failed attempt at reading it, I’m now about 3/4 of the way through the audio of GoT, and intend to listen to all the Song of Ice and Fire books.

I think with Broken Hearts Fences and Other Things to Mend you have to go into it knowing what it is. And that’s just a cute summer read filled with drama. It’s probably not going to be a 5 star book, but I enjoyed it for what it was. I think you just have to not expect it to be like Morgan’s other books, because it’s sooooo different.
On GOT, I read the first book (already watched the show) and I’m debating on if I want to continue. I really liked the first book, but you’re right they’re sooooo long and just…commitment…. lol

I would definitely read at least the second book in the TMI series. I didn’t love City of Bones either. It took me forever to read it, and I only gave it 3 stars. After I watched the movie, I went back and read 2 and 3. Month later I finally read 4 and 5, and I read 6 when it came out. I loved all the rest of the books, so I would give it one more chance.
I agree with you on Outlander and Game of Thrones. They’re so long and so well-loved that they make me nervous! Lol

I actually really really DON’T like Game of Thrones. I read the first book and thought to myself, “It was pretty slow and boring.. surely it gets better?” And convinced that the series only gets better, I read the second one. I thought it was even slower and more boring. But I kept trying to continue.. well I stopped halfway through book three because it wasn’t getting better.
The main problem for me was IT’S SO SLOW!! And there will be like 10 points of view, 8 of which I don’t care about AT ALL. So then I have to wait like 30 chapters to get to a character I do like, then I’m disappointed when nothing of note happens in that chapter.
Bleh.
But, I actually do love the TV series. Maybe because it’s on TV or something, but the TV show feels a bit more fast paced and intense than the books. It cuts out some of the boring bits lol.

UGH this is what I was afraid about. Slow books are hard for my attention in general (even though I do totally love some slow books) BUT UGH WHEN IT IS THAT LONG?! Ughh that makes me just want to watch the show!

TMI series will always be one I push, because I love it so much. Outlander has made a lot of lists today. I’m unsure of it myself. I’m with you on the Dorothy Must Die and FFF issue. I did some research and wrote a post on it (http://confessionsofabookgeek.wordpress.com/2014/04/23/on-boycotting-and-full-fathom-five/) so I’m avoiding for the time being. I own all 7 GOT books, but the fear is still too great!! And I’ve heard loads about the Gone series, so I’ll try them at some point. The rest of your list I’ve heard of but I’m in no rush to find out more about them 🙂

I LOVE Game of Thrones. The books are super super long but if you save them for times when you know you can handle it they work. Like, I’ve read three of the five on vacations and that worked for me because starting the book on a flight or train ride lets me get 100-200 pages in right away and then I’m absorbed. They’re definitely not books you want to read 30 pages of a day. I wasn’t going to read them initially but then Tom and I were watching the show and I kept asking him so many background questions that he said I had to read the books (he’s a fan from the beginning).

I say yay 17 First Kisses! Honestly it wasn’t on my radar at all until Blythe and Ellis started praising it but I love the things they’re saying so I went out and bought a copy.
I’m also scared of GoT. I’m normally not automatically put off by long books but THEY ARE SO HUGE. I totally understand the fear of growing old trying to finish them.
I’ve only read Broken Hearts and Since You’ve Been Gone but based on those two, I think you’re wise to stick to her Morgan books. It’s not that Broken Hearts was bad as much as it lacked some special something that Since You’ve Been Gone had.

The Mortal Instrument Series gets MUCH better after the first book. Minus the squick factor of the “sibling” relationship (which is addressed and resolved in book 3), it is a series that gets increasingly better as it goes on. I really didn’t want to continue the series after the first book, but one of my YA mentors strongly encouraged me to do so. Instead of reading the books, I opted to listen on Audible instead. Once I made the switch, it was amazing! The readers were great, and the story really developed and became one of my favorite series.
On the same token, while I like The Mortal Instruments, her other series, The Infernal Devices, is far superior. I also listened to that one and it is excellent! Victorian England, lots of book references, and automatons?? How can you go wrong? You can’t!
Also- my suggestion for Game of Thrones- watch Season 1 first, then read the books. There are SO many characters in the books that having an actual visual of who they are will help you keep them straight as you read. Also, the first season is almost verbatim first book. That doesn’t mean skip the book, but this is the one rare instance ever in life where I suggest watching the visual medium ahead of the book.
Wicked the book did suck. Skip it and just sing the songs from the musical at the top of your lungs!

You are the second commenter to rec the audiobooks so I think that may be the route I go! Thank you!! Also, I think I WILL be reading INfernal Devices. Does it have a lot of crossover?
And that’s interesting for GoT…maybe it watching it first will help me even realize if it’s a series I want to get into reading. Like it could be a good tv series for me but not something that would interest me book wise.

Freedom – don’t bother! I love literary fiction too, but this book was just painful. There are much better books out there that you will actually enjoy reading!

Just a few days ago I read the first two chapters of Gone and didn’t feel like continuing on with the rest of the book and the series too! It just gave me a feeling that I didn’t want to stick around and see how it unfolds. 🙁
Aww, I pretty much enjoyed The Mortal Instruments! (the last book was published on my birthday so I feel connected to the series somehow haha) But if you don’t feel like reading the series, maybe you could try The Infernal Devices? It’s a trilogy also written by Cassandra Clare. 🙂

One of my book club friends told us (we asked) some of the things that happened in later books and it actually made me want to continue more than reading the first book did lol.
A lot of people are saying to give Infernal Devices a chance!! I think I may because I have the first book!

I read Wicked and really disliked it so I would say pass.
I also read the first Game of Thrones and it was definitely intense. I would say read it if you have a lot of time and energy. There are a lot of characters you need to keep straight.
After the first Mortal Instruments book I had no desire to keep going. I googled what happened in the series to give myself some closure and that was more than enough for me.
Can some explain this Fathom Five thing to me? I tried looking it up but I am still really confused.

I feel the same way about Dorothy and most FFF books – I kind of have them on my “Do Not Read” list, even though I’ve heard good things about Dorothy – I’m so conflicted about a lot of packaged books.
You can totally watch GoT without reading the books…I’m doing that. The show is great and it’s not worth stopping yourself from watching just because you want to read the thousands of pages of book first (I know, I’m such a terrible book blogger!). See how you like the show first, and then if you’re really interested, you can read?
I am the same on Broken Hearts – want to read, but do not want to lose the Matson magic. I think she writes as Katie Finn because those books are less weighty, so I feel like it’s okay not to want to read them.
I think I might try Outlander on audiobook – I tend to read audiobooks as I’m falling asleep, and I never put pressure on myself to finish them, so that might be a right way to go?

I’m with you on the Mortal Instruments – I’ve read the first five, which I struggled through, but I’m not sure if I’m up for the 900+ page last book! I just think the Shadowhunter concept has gotten a little overkill. I read Dorothy Must Die (which I didn’t know was a FFF book), but I didn’t like it anyway. It was mostly just world building and nothing happened. As for Wicked – I loved that book! It’s hard to get into, but it really takes off from there.

I had no idea about the Full Fathom Five thing, and I’ve got a library copy of Dorothy Must Die on my shelf. Now I don’t know if I want to promote it, because, like you, I’m not sure who I would be affecting. Since the authors only seem to make a flat rate, I feel like it wouldn’t affect them at all if I boycotted. And I REALLY hate James Frey. A lot. I don’t think he should be successful because of the lies and uncredited info and so many other reasons.
And, like you, I’ve read a few Mortal Instruments (i.e. TWO) and I didn’t love them and I just don’t want to commit to all those. THERE ARE SO MANY. I’ve also got a copy of 17 First Kisses and I’ve gone back and forth because of reviews on it.

Yes that’s the hard thing is like WHO GETS THE SHORT END OF THE STICK HERE?! I don’t want to screw over the authors bc sometimes you have to do what you gotta do to get a foot in the door. BUT JAMES FREY. I just cannot. I like nothing about that man. I was in the same room wtih him at a party during BEA and he honestly just seemed so douchy and like he thought he was above it all.

My interest in Dorothy Must Die also evaporated when I heard Full Fathom Five was involved. On top of that I’ve heard it has a cliffhanger ending and haven’t seen a lot of stellar reviews.

When it comes to A Song of Ice and Fire I would suggest caution. I love GOT so I picked up the first book. I would not have been able to keep up with what was happening in the book if not for the show. It was dense as anything and I felt like it was never going to end. It was good but I think I am fine with the show for now.

I read Wicked years ago and finally got to see the show last year. I LOVE the book. I like the socio-political commentary portrayed through the books that isn’t really addressed in the play. But it’s very possible that seeing the show well after I read the series has something to do with my preference. If you haven’t done so already, I definitely recommend Maguire’s other works. So Wicked might not be for you, but that man has so many other awesome things to offer.

I can’t speak to a lot of these but I do think you should read Outlander. Yes it is big but honestly it’s really smooth writing and you’ll fly through it. There’s also a lot less characters than similar sized books like Game of Thrones. I also loved Wicked. I read it before I saw the musical so I don’t know if that influenced my appreciation or not. It is much darker than the musical but it explores some different ideas and themes than the musical. It’s a really interesting read.
From everything I’ve heard you’re probably better off not finishing The Mortal Instruments and Game of Thrones goes down hill after Book 3, so you could just watch the show. It’s pretty true to the books.

Wicked was a DNF for me. I’m kind of embarrassed about it because so many people I know rave about it. I gave it a good go, too. I have the same problem with Outlander. It just looks like quite an undertaking to read it, and with everything else going on in life, I can’t bring myself to start it. That’s one nice thing about ebooks. I’m not daunted by the size 🙂

Yay! Another Outlander! I was curious about Dorothy Must Die but when even the positive reviews didn’t grab me I decided it probably wasn’t for me. I tried the Cinderella version of Wicked and didn’t make it very far so I think Wicked is on my Not Going to Happen list as well.

YES Outlander is worth reading!! — all the thousands and thousands of pages in that series are worth every page. For me, they were the kind of books I never wanted to end, so I didn’t mind in the slightest how long they were. In fact, I’m dying to re-read them — wanting to re-read that many pages definitely says something, I think.
I also loved the Wicked musical, but didn’t like the book — honestly, it was weird and confusing, so I would skip it.
And I think Game of Thrones is a good one to aspire too — I also REALLY want to read them, but haven’t yet, though I am convinced I will — hoping for an epic saga kind of like Outlander is, but a totally different story obviously. I’m trying to get going on those before the next HBO season airs.

The only book I’ve read on the list is Broken Fences. I personally adored that book, but it is much different from Morgan’s other books (which is on purpose). It’s definitely on the lighter side, and the story is completely ridiculous, but in the “fun summer” read kind of way. It kind of read like a Disney Channel show, if that makes sense. If you do ever read it, don’t go in with the expectations that the Finn books will be like the Matson ones, because I think that’ll really set you up for disappointment.

I’m halfway though The Mortal Instruments, but it’s like I’ve hit a block when it comes to the rest of the series. I just can’t bring myself to finish it either. But if you want the Shadowhunter world, then I’d recommend the Infernal Devices! I’ve only read Clockwork Angel, but it was a lot better than TMI.
I listed Dorothy Must Die today for the same exact reason; it sounds good, but the FFF thing put me off and I just get a bad feeling when I think about picking it up.

I felt the exact same way about Game of Thrones and I hate watching such huge tv shows/movies based on books that I haven’t read yet. A good friend of mine highly recommended both the books and tv show and she helped me decide whether or not to read/watch by breaking down the chapters with the episodes in the first season. The first season is so close to the book that you can read up to a point and then watch the episode, read more and watch the next episode and so on. If you want, I can send you the chapters-to-episode break down which might help you ease into GoT the way it did for me. The other seasons aren’t as clean cut, but it will help you gauge if you like it enough to continue with the series.

I did try to read Game of thrones but God it was boring. I gave up on it. The TV series too. :S But I was okay with “Gone” by Michael Grant, just thought it was a little to slow so I haven’t read the rest yet.

You should really give the Murder Complex a try!!! I was quite surprised by the writing and world of that one. While I don’t usually read novellas, I would actually recommend reading the Fear Trials before reading the actual book. It definitely helps one to understand more of the back story of and some of the relationship aspects within the family.
I tried Game of Throne…it was dull as watching paint dry and I never made it more than two hundred pages into the first book. For me, it just didn’t work; which made me sad because I love fantasy books.

I tried reading Outlander but stopped at page like, 100. It was slow and rather boring to be honest.
I read Game of Thrones years ago and really loved it, but its definitely high fantasy so you have to be in the mood for that. The characters are great.

Here are my thoughts:
1. Outlander: I thought I would listen to the audiobook before the show premiered. It was very slow in the beginning and then developed into the various sexcapades of the two main characters. I was hoping for a more plot-driven story instead of a bodice ripper that lasts for thousands of pages.
2. Game of Thrones: I listened to the audiobooks and was not disappointed. Yes, they are long. However, the story is so rich and complex, there is no way to make it any shorter. You could watch the series without reading the books, but I think you get a better understanding of what is going on if you read the books.
3. Wicked: I saw the show before I read the book and yes, they are very different. But I think they are different enough to not really diminish the quality of each other. The book is darker, but that is because it is more mature and more complex. I thought it was a great read and I have been meaning to go back and read it again. The others in the series are enjoyable as well.

I’m actually currently reading Outlander by Diana Gabaldon and am almost finished. I had it in the back of my mind as a TBR for years, and finally picked it up last week because of the TV show. I’m not finished so I don’t have complete thoughts yet. But I do NOT love it as much as I thought (given the huge amount of hype especially), and I’m not sure I will continue the series. I will still check out the TV show because I can see this book translating better on screen in some ways, for me anyway.
As for Wicked by Gregory Maguire, I say read it! The musical is beloved to me, and I saw it twice before reading the book. The book is VERY different from the musical, but it’s actually so different that it’s easy to separate them in a way. Like you know with some book-to-movie adaptations, where the changes are slight enough that it feels true to the story? (I’m thinking Hunger Games as an example.) Well… that is NOT the case with Wicked. It’s so different – also so awesome! – in a totally different way. I highly, highly recommend, especially given that you like literary fiction.

I just read Outlander last week, and looooooved it! I don’t know why it took me so long to read it, but I’m so glad I did. I read it in 7 days, which is much longer than it takes me to read the average sized book, but I don’t think 7 days is too bad. I read a different book after I finished this, and I had to pick up the 2nd one because I missed the characters/setting!
My husband and I watch Game of Thrones, and I’ve only read 200ish pages of the 1st book. It’s a book I pick up when I don’t know what else to read/miss the show. You can definitely watch it without reading the books, though I have picked up on a few extra details by reading what I’ve heard. I refuse to read past where the show currently is.
I read Wicked years ago, and really struggled through it. It was just ‘meh’ for me.
I read and enjoyed Dorothy Must Die. I know about the FFF thing, but I don’t really know how I feel about it. I read it because I want to support the author. If people read/buy the book, perhaps she can get a new deal and get far away from FFF.

OMG, I’d never heard of the Full Fathom Five controversy before. But after reading this and doing some research into it, I don’t want to read those books either. I’ve already read the first 2 books of the Lorien Legacies, but knowing what Frey did to the real author, I’m not sure if I want to finish it. But then I’m torn because I feel bad for the actual authors because they put so much work into these stories, and if the books actually have their names on it, and not a pseudonym, they will at least be getting the recognition for their work (until Frey fires them over “creative differences”). I totally understand the not being sure where you stand on this, because I feel the same way.

I read Wicked when it first came out and it left me searching for a bleach shower for my brain. I hated it. I think the musical was more inspired by the book because they are so completely different.

Wicked is one of my all-time favourite books! It’s more academic – it was originally an essay about good and evil, and more philosophical. I found the ending of the book more satisfying too. I couldn’t get into the sequel, but I’ve reread Wicked several times!

I’m with you on The Murder Complex & Wicked. I remembered first hearing about The Murder Complex back in 2012 and being so excited because it sounded so fantastic! I love watching murder mysteries and this might make me sound sadistic but my interest is always piqued when there’s mention of murder in a book. And the world just sounded so intriguing but when the book came out this year, there were a lot of negative reviews so now I’m thinking that it might not be worth it especially since there are so many other books that I want to read that I’m more sure I will love so I don’t want to waste my time.
And as for Wicked, I’ve had the book on my shelf for four years now and every now and then I’ll go and pick it up with plans to read it only to see it back to the shelf a few months later when I clean out my room. I don’t know why it’s just not happening for me because like you, I loved the musical! But yeah, I feel like because the book is so different from the musical, I might not like it so I don’t know. It’s also rather big which is quite daunting for me. I tend to stay away from big books now. Especially big books with small writing!

I’m sure I’ve commented my opinion on the Mortal Instruments series before. But I am not a HUGE fan of the series and maybe my middle of the road insight might be more helpful than that of the mega fans who just simply PUSH it. I honestly think it’s true what they say that the books get better as they go. It took me 2 tries to read Book 1, and then when I read book 2 it was like a switch had flipped. Was this really the same author?? It felt so different (better). Book 3 then wraps up a story arc so you get a good sense of fulfillment without being dragged through 6 books of no answers. I also started the Infernal Devices because I had heard you should read both series in the order they were published. I enjoy that series SO MUCH better. I would say that if you aren’t set on giving it up yet, try book 2, or try Clockwork Angel. If you don’t enjoy those more, then I would say it’s safe to give it up.

So you know how much of a fantasy fan I am, especially with dragons, but I honestly didn’t really like Song of Ice and Fire. I’ve read the first book and half the second and feel absolutely no compulsion to finish. They are so heavy on court intrigue and war and pretty light on actual fantasy, so it ends up feeling like alternative history fantasy?

If you do decide to read other Mortal Instruments books, I recommend you stop after the third one, as there is closure (books four to six have a completely different arc), and the other books in the series aren’t as good (I really liked the sixth one, but books four and five were pretty underwhelming).

The Mortal Instruments. You should definitely not finish it. I tried, and I managed to reach Book 4 (City of Fallen Angels) But by then, I totally forgot why I was reading this book, it just goes on forever and the characters doesn’t develop. There isn’t anything new to them, they just managed to be more annoying the longer I read. But maybe that’s due to my ADHD but seriously, I loved the first book. Loved it. But the rest were hhhhmmmmkay.

So… I liked the book. But the musical really is very different, I was surprised when I watched it. (but GOOD surprised and I like the musical a ton more). However, i really did like the book when I first read it. Sorry I’m not much help am I? However — I like to think things happened as the events in the musical happened. So. Maybe that helps? Game of thrones… real chunker right there! I read it relatively quickly because it had me intrigued and did so with the next two books too… however, the 4th got reaal slow and I stopped and haven’t picked it back up (I just have os much more to read!). However… if you’re only going to read it to watch the show, I’d say just don’t read it. The first season was SO close to the books that it almost took away from the show for me when I watched it because I watched it RIGHT after I read the book and I almost got bored because I knew every little thing that was going to happen. And game of thrones is not boring. So I wish I was able to enjoy the show more like all my friends who watched it. Of course, now it’s been so long since I read the 2nd and 3rd books that I don’t remember details well so I’me xcited to get to watch the next seasons and enjoy it more. 🙂 I’m undecided if I’ll ever finish the books…

And then she wrote more. And while part of me kind of wants to read them, I think it would be a long while before I get around to it. So, basically, I’m advising that if you do decide to continue, stop at book three and don’t feel guilty. lol

I have both read Wicked and seen the play. Honestly (painful as it is to admit), the musical is SO much better than the book. Like, there’s no competition. The book is very strange and uncomfortable at times. Some of his other books are all right, but I wouldn’t recommend this one, especially if you love the musical so much.
I love A Song of Ice and Fire series (Game of Thrones), but it definitely is a heavier, politically-driven fantasy. They’re worth reading imo, but perhaps save them for when you’re in the right mood.
Also? I’ve also gotten in the habit of letting my excitement for certain books die out once I’ve realized lots of people like it. It sucks because I could still really enjoy the book myself, but I feel like I’m becoming a bit pickier about what I choose to read since there are so many books, so little time and all that.

There are so many characters and so much history to keep up with. Having faces to put to the names helped me enjoy the books that much more.

1. I’m not going to finish the TMI series, I liked the first 3 okay but it’s not amazing to me. But I love the infernal devices trilogy – I think the storyline works much better in the Victorian era in London 🙂
2. So Outlander. I read the first book and it’s so well written and researched and interesting. And pretty good. BUT the romance borderlines on Fifty Shades of Grey. Way too much sex and Jamie is like Christian Grey and I’m not happy about that :/ I’m debating whether I should finish the series…
3. I really dislike James Frey and everything he stands for. And Full Fathom Five. When I found out he co-wrote the I Am Number Four series – I immediately took that off my tbr. I’m not sure about Dorothy Must Die but right now, I don’t want to read it because she’s part of FFF. I want to know her story and why she went with that company.
4. I also want to read Game of Thrones!! But damn those books are HUGE!!
5. I mentioned it before but I had the same issue with reading Morgan Matson’s books under Katie Finn. But I decided that I’m going to read Broken Hearts and it’s waiting for me to pick it up from the library tomorrow!! I’ll let you know what I think since we are in the same boat!! And I can’t not get on that especially with the sequel called Revenge, Ice Cream, and Other Things Best Served Cold – I got to – that title!!
6. Wicked… I tried to read it and I couldn’t get into it. And hear so many negative things about it. I got rid of the books. I did read Confessions of an Ugly Stepsister and enjoyed that though and will read his other retelling stand alones!

Game of Thrones made my TTT list this week as well. I own the first one but haven’t started reading it because as you said, it’s so long. I have been watching the tv series though which I wholeheartedly recommend. There are some changes from the book anyway.
I’ve liked what I’ve heard of Wicked (literally heard, I’m talking about the musical, haha). I know the book is a bit darker and I haven’t read it, so I’m not sure if I should recommend it to you or not. Hmm… Maybe give it a try though?
Outlander has been a series I’ve been hearing about lately. I kind of want to read it.
I wasn’t aware Morgan Matson had a pen name and oh my goodness! I knew she wrote Since You’ve Been Gone, but I didn’t know she wrote Amy and Roger’s Epic Detour as well! I haven’t read any of her books but Since You’ve Been Gone is at the top of my list of books to buy soon.

I think as far as Wicked, the book will bore you to tears in comparison to the musical. Lots of it seems pointless and almost like it has no purpose, only making you more bored. Really random dribble that somehow is connected to that awesome musical.

Since you love Melina Marchetta and have recently become a fan of fantasy, have you been bombarded by people suggesting you read a The Lumetere Chronicles? Because it’s beyond amazing and all three books have been published so you won’t have to endure a game between books 🙂

I’ve haven’t read the others but The Mortal Instruments is so worth it! I’ve read them all and each book gets better and better. Although at times I feel like there’s too much conflict.
