I am so, so excited for Fall! The older Riley has gotten, and especially as she has become a toddler, I just love exploring all that each season has to offer her! And Fall has SO MUCH TO OFFER.
I love helping her learn and also reiterate the Fall things we do by reading books. I just love seeing it “click” for her — which is one of my greatest mom joys in addition to cuddling and reading books. In that spirit, I figured it was high time to share some of our favorite fall books for toddlers — just the best picture books to get you into that fall mood and help your toddler learn and interact with all that Fall has to offer in 2022.
My fall reading list for the toddler age range avoids anything scary! It will be fun to see if Riley likes scary books like I do when she grows up but for now my Halloween & Fall board book selections will be pretty scare free.
I’ve got so many things on our fall bucket list and reading these Fall-themed picture books with my newly 2 year old are pretty much at the top of it! We’ve already enjoyed exploring some pumpkin patches and apples so I hope our reading list will be complementary to all the Fall fun we will have during this toddler stage!

Fall Books For Toddlers: A Reading List
I’m breaking it down by what age that Riley enjoyed these books just to give you an idea whether or not I think they are for the younger toddler or older toddler. Not definitive or anything but I like seeing that kind of thing when I’m looking for kid books so thought it might help to break it down!
Fall Books For Babies & Younger Toddlers (1 Year Olds)
Barnyard Baby by Elise Broach:
This is such a little gem of a Fall book for 1 year old toddlers! It’s an interactive Fall board book with simple rhymes that follows a baby around the barnyard on an autumn day. Seriously darling!
Duck & Goose Find A Pumpkin:
This is one of 1 year old Riley’s FAVORITE books last Fall and it made it so enjoyable for me to read it because she loved it so much. Duck and Goose want to get a pumpkin after they see one of their friends with a pumpkin so they set off on their search to look for a pumpkin — in trees, in water, etc. Riley finds it so funny and I find reading the book to herself saying “NO NO NO!” because “no!” is the answer to every time they ask if the pumpkin is somewhere and then she laughs. HIGHLY rec this adorable Fall picture book for your toddlers.

Fall (Bright Baby Touch & Feel):
We have a few of these touch and feel books in this series and this was a great addition for Fall! I feel like any seasonal touch and feel books make good autumn reads for babies and toddlers alike because it’s so easy to incorporate so many of the things during your storytime — like playing with and learning about real leaves and let them touch pumpkins. At least that’s my plan for some fall sensory fun — loving this list of fall sensory ideas!
Baby Loves Fall by Karen Katz
We love Karen Katz books and I bought her the summer themed one and had to buy this one too since she loved it so much. Riley is a manhandler of the flaps so we can never borrow these from the library! Karen Katz pretty much makes any list I make so I’m glad she had one that I could put on our Fall reading list!

I Love Fall Touch & Feel Book:
We really love the touch and feel books around here at 1 years old still but she was OBSESSED as a baby. It could keep her entertained for 15 minutes which always felt huge to me haha. This one has a little more story that the touch and feels above so still a great choice for older toddlers! Simple book that is great for introducing Fall things!

Seven Orange Pumpkins:
Looking for a non-scary Halloween book for toddlers this October? I feel like this fun counting book is perfect — around 20 months Riley really got into counting and this would be a great seasonal counting book for autumn! This author also has Ten Orange Pumpkins by which is basically the same story/concept but a little longer.
The Itsy Bitsy Pumpkin
Cute little Halloween themed book set to “The Itsy Bitsy Spider” makes for a perfect children’s book for Fall! Riley loved this one!

Fall Books For 2 to 3 Years Old
Mouse’s First Fall:
This is a cute little book about mouse experiencing Fall for the first time — discovering leaves and their colors and shapes and the joy of jumping in leaves. Definitely want to read this and do some fall nature walks.

Hello Fall by Deborah Diesen
Oh this is just the cutest book about a little girl and her grandfather soaking up Fall together.
Goodnight Little Pumpkin
I got this one out on a whim and I was pleasantly surprised! Really cute Fall book with zero scares! Perfect little bedtime story to share in the Fall!
Pumpkin Orange, Pumpkin Round
This is a cute one! It’s about a family of cats going to pick out there pumpkins, carve them and then trick-or-treat. It’s very rhyme-y and repetitive — two words rhymes and every single one starts with pumpkin. The story isn’t much in terms of the words but the pictures definitely tell the story and my girl really enjoyed this one at 2.
Leaves by David Ezra Stein
THIS IS THE CUTEST BOOK! We got this from the library and it’s a winner if you are looking for leaf themed picture books! Seriously so cute watching bear’s first autumn and his confusion over the leaves falling and then, after hibernating, coming back out to see new budding leaves. A nice little primer about changing seasons and why leaves fall.
Apples & Pumpkins
I had to grab this one because we are doing all sorts of apple and pumpkin picking this year with Riley and it’s fun to be able to do the things that are in the book! I was looking for books about apples for toddlers to add to my list and this one seems to fit the bill. Just a nice little book about a girl having a Fall-filled day picking apples and pumpkins with her family.

Pete the Cat – Five Little Pumpkins
I LOVE PETE THE CAT!! The boys I nanny and I fell in love with those books and then they gifted Pete the Cat Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to Riley at my baby shower and it’s now one of her favorite books so I get a little excited to talk Pete the Cat. LOVE this book and it was a hit with the boys I nannied who were pre-school age and it’s a hit for Riley!
Halloween Themed Books For Toddlers
Five Little Pumpkins
This is another one that I read with the boys I nanny so I have to get it out for Riley from the library because I know it will be a hit! A nice little rhyming book following five little pumpkins on Halloween night.
Duck & Goose: Honk! Quack! Boo!:
I just put an order in for this one because of how much she loves the other Duck & Goose one at the top of my list! Definitely one I plan on owning! Love this little duo of Duck and Goose and can’t wait to see what they get up to on Halloween.
Where Is Baby’s Pumpkin?
Another Karen Katz book — Riley loves Where is Baby’s Belly Button so this was a must for our Fall board book list! It’s a great Halloween lift the flap book! Riley’s really into “finding” things now so this is perfect!
Five Black Cats
I picked this one up on a whim at Target or somewhere like that and it turned out to be really cute. Five black cats on a little adventure on Halloween night. It was also fun because there was some spiders and pumpkins and things we’d look for on the page and different shapes.
Spookie Pookie
Another Sandra Boynton book, you ask (I warned you we were big fans)? WHY YES. Of course any list of Fall books for toddlers and babies should have this book on it! Cute little Pookie needs to figure out what to be for Halloween — perfect pick for a fun Halloween book for toddlers as they start to understand this concept!
Eek! Halloween!
Riley is obsessed with Sandra Boynton’s books and for good reasons — they are the perfect silly little books for babies and toddlers, I think! If you checked out my favorite baby bedtime books you will notice her books made quite the appearance on the list! A really fun Halloween book for toddlers!
Luke & Lottie, It’s Halloween!
If you are looking for a good book that will be a nice soft intro into all the festivities of Halloween, this is it. Not scary at all! If you are looking for a great STORY, this isn’t it. But I personally love reading books that walk her through different things (like going to the dentist) because she learns SO much from reading and absorbs that knowledge for real life so we can talk through things like trick or treat or heading to the dentist and what will happen next.

Oh man, he’s not much of a book lover, sadly. He only wants to rip the pages and chew the covers, but screams when we read. His favorites right now are Baby Dragon, a finger puppet book, because he likes to grab at the dragon. And Look Look, which was one of the Imagination Library gifts – he loves to stare at the page with faces on it. I got some of the Never Touch A… series recently and he does like to feel the textures but has zero patience for the story! :'(

Ok, so we got a few of these from our library. They don’t let me request board books, boo. We checked out Leaves, Apples & Pumpkins, Duck & Goose Honk Quack Boo, and Pete the Cat 5 Little Pumpkins. They all look so cute. I have to dive into my library database to see if I can reserve some books about autumn. Sometimes they have tables with season theme but they didn’t have any last time we went yet.

Love this! I have 4 kids. My oldest 2(11 &7) are so not into books and it breaks my heart. I’ve been trying and trying to find books that they would be interested in. Of course my youngest 2 (2 & 9 month) don’t care they just want to turn the pages. LOL. But I love Fall so I can’t wait to read some of these to them!
