When I got asked to take part in this AMAZING blog tour I KNEW I had to see if my girl Carla (biggest Maggie fan ever + my occasional guest reviewer..you met her in this post right??) wanted to tackle this with me. And tackle it did she ever! It’s perfect.

I’ve been LOVING keeping up with this tour (runs from November 1-22) because bloggers have been so creative, you can win awesome things and also Maggie Stiefvater is BRILLIANT — seriously SHE DESIGNED THEM ALL. So here’s the schedule for the tour if you need to catch up! The tour has been featuring the Major Arcana with each stop on the tour revealing one of the 22 cards as designed by Maggie Stiefvater, and will use that card to reveal the past, present and future of The Raven Cycle series. ABOUT THE TAROT DECK

 

The tarot is a divination system that uses a deck of cards to gain insight. Most decks are comprised of 78 cards divided into the Major Arcana and Minor Arcana, with each card being symbolic of an energy or spiritual truth. The Major Arcana are known as the “trump cards” because they impart messages of greater weight and significance than the Minor Arcana.

About The Judgment Card + Carla’s Reading Of It:

We’ll give you a little background on The Judgment card and then Carla is going to give you a reading for the series:

 

Judgment

The JUDGMENT card is one that represents plans coming to fruition, that symbolizes resurrection, that indicates life changing decisions are required. A major change is coming.

Upright the card symbolizes judgment, absolution and rebirth; of how to awaken the truth inside of you and bring it into the light. Reversed symbolizes doubt and self judgement; of how easy it is to be overly critical of yourself and never allowing yourself to think of mistakes as learning experiences.

Past

Ronan has a secret that he both knows and doesn’t know. It’s a secret that he folds up and tries to hide away. It’s the harder kind of secret; the one he keeps from himself. He is close to reaching a significant stage in his own journey, however, he is riddled with denial. He is full of anger and hate. You can see this in the way he behaves at the start of The Dream Thieves; he is, to put it blunt, a bit of a bastard. This secret gets brought to life in his dreams where the truth is awakened and brought into the light. In his dreams, he opens himself up to his secrets and realizes that he needs to take action. He has taken the first steps into admitting the secret to himself.

Present

Ronan has reached a significant stage in his own journey. Whilst still a bit of a prick, he seems to be letting his life finally come together. He is moving towards reconciling this part of himself and moving past the denial stage. He is ready to confront who he is. He seems more willing to accept that change is inevitable and that self doubt and judgement can be avoided. That he can find absolution inside of himself. That the only judgment he was experiencing wasn’t from anyone else, but from himself.

Future

Ronan understands that the major change is here, demanding to be known, however, this change will be under his control. Now is the time for him to make all the changes he desires. He understands that you can’t run or hide from yourself and that this change is necessary. Judgment tells him that whilst he is to be aware of the past he can use the lessons he has learned about himself as a person to take a definite step right into Adam’s arms towards the future he desires and deserves. A future where he will never lose sight of his worth. A future full of hope and all the wonderful things that come from having faith that you are on the right path.

Book 1: The Raven Boys

Every year, Blue Sargent stands next to her clairvoyant mother as the soon-to-be dead walk past. Blue never sees them–until this year, when a boy emerges from the dark and speaks to her. His name is Gansey, a rich student at Aglionby, the local private school. Blue has a policy of staying away from Aglionby boys. Known as Raven Boys, they can only mean trouble.

But Blue is drawn to Gansey, in a way she can’t entirely explain. He is on a quest that has encompassed three other Raven Boys: Adam, the scholarship student who resents the privilege around him; Ronan, the fierce soul whose emotions range from anger to despair; and Noah, the taciturn watcher who notices many things but says very little.

For as long as she can remember, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love to die. She doesn’t believe in true love, and never thought this would be a problem. But as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she’s not so sure anymore.

 

Book 2: The Dream Thieves

Now that the ley lines around Cabeswater have been woken, nothing for Ronan, Gansey, Blue, and Adam will be the same. Ronan, for one, is falling more and more deeply into his dreams, and his dreams are intruding more and more into waking life. Meanwhile, some very sinister people are looking for some of the same pieces of the Cabeswater puzzle that Gansey is after….

Book 3: Blue Lily, Lily Blue

There is danger in dreaming. But there is even more danger in waking up.

Blue Sargent has found things. For the first time in her life, she has friends she can trust, a group to which she can belong. The Raven Boys have taken her in as one of their own. Their problems have become hers, and her problems have become theirs.

The trick with found things though, is how easily they can be lost.

    I love this series so much. I love the prose and the fact it is so original. I truly never know what is going to happen next, which is refreshing. But, mostly, I love the characters. It’s tempting just to scream RONAN!!! And, in fact, my phone autocorrects his name to all-caps because I scream about him all the time when I’m texting my friends, but I love so many other characters, too. I love Blue and Gansey, I love Calla and the Gray Man, I LOVE JESSE DITLEY!!! I just have a lot of love, apparently.

    I’ve only read the first book of this series, but i really liked it! i like all of the supernatural/magical elements in it. Plus, Maggie is a gnat attic author and had a way with words. Her writing style is awesome.

    I love trying to figure things out. I’m notoriously dense about metaphors (i’ve always been overly literal), so there has been a lot of discussion with friends and I enjoy talking to them & seeing the story in so many different ways

    My favorite part of the series is the characters. I always love Maggie’s characters, but she outdid herself with Blue and her quirky family, Ronan and his ability, and of course — Gansey.

    I’m in love with this series and this is such a fun giveaway. I’m still waiting for Blue Lily, Lily Blue from the library, but these books are so different from the zillions of others that I read (but also love) so it’s a standout series for me.

    I love how you can feel the magic of the story and its characters and Maggie’s words come off the pages and settle on your fingers when you’re reading. I love this series so much. As for characters: Either Ronan or Adam are my favorite. I can’t decide between the two.

    I love everything about this series, but my favorite thing is the friendship between the main characters. To me the friendships are what makes this series so special. Because even though I love all the crazy magic (and boy, do I love it!) what makes me obsessed with the series is my love of the characters 🙂

    I don’t know that I can choose just ONE favorite thing about this series. I love the relationships and how they all build up around one another… how real they all seem to me. And the writing… oh my, I LOVE Maggie’s writing. *sigh*

    I truly don’t know how to pick a favorite when I am so in love with the whole series! I love the characters, I love the setting (Does it count as one of the characters when it is sentient? Sometimes?). I love the writing and the introspective and the magic that feels true, and the truth that feels like magic. I love everything Maggie writes, truly, but of everything, the Raven Cycle is quickly overtaking The Scorpio Races as my favorite!

    This is my favorite on-going series right now because I just *adore* all the characters. I love how complex each of them is and how they are together. I also love how real Henrietta feels and how it seems like magic could be lurking anywhere. Ah, there is just too much to love about these books!

    I love this series so much! I love all of Steifvater’s works, but this series is excellent. I have Blue Lily, Lily Blue in my tbr on audiobook list. I am looking forward to reading it, but I’m also savoring the moment until I do. It is a conundrum.

    I like so much about this series. Um…I love Maggie’s writing. I’m in love with every single character, because they are imperfect and that makes them perfect to me. I like their flaws and I like to see them work on themselves. But most of all I love Adam Parrish ((I just had to say that…))

    I listened to The Raven Boys earlier this year and loved the dynamic between the boys. I found them individually fascinating – the characters in the book are all incredibly strong. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of this series!

    My favorite thing about the series is definitely Maggie’s use of words and imagery. It’s very easy for me to imagine Henrietta because I live in a place that’s pretty close (in geography and character). But because I live in a place that is Henrietta-esque, I get very easily irritated by authors’ descriptions because so many of them either (in my opinion) miss the mark or focus too much on the tourism industry, the abject poverty of a lot of people in Appalachia, the holy rollers. Not that these things aren’t important, but they’re not important to me; they’re not what makes this home for me. But Maggie nails it, every time.

    My favorite thing about the series is Ronan and Gansey. I’ve listened to the audiobooks quite a few times. I love how Will Patton narrates them. He does a perfect job!!

    I’ve only read the first installment in the series, but my favorite thing about it was how wonderful a writer MS is. She is so incredibly excellent at character development and interactions, and her prose is beautiful. I can’t wait to get my hands on the rest of the series!

    I find it very hard to put my feelings for this series into words. The story is just so…mystical? Mysterious? Marvelous? With most books there is almost always a clear plot structure or at least a clear sense of where the story is headed. I generally have a good intuition when it comes to that and often I feel really disappointed when I guess right too early. With The Raven Cycle, I find myself surprised at every turn and it leaves me on the edge of my seat. Of course, the writing is glorious as well.

    I feel like I’m the only person who hasn’t read this series! Lol 😛 I have the first book, it’s just a matter of getting to it! I’ve heard so many amazing things too.     The Greywaren aspect of the books is so interesting. That Ronan can take things out of his dreams is one of the coolest powers ever. And I love the group of characters. Their bond is so amazing and interesting and complex. I love it. I really like the way Blue describes her friendship with the Raven Boys when she’s talking to Orla, about how they’re all obsessed with each other. I love that they’re all so tied together. (I also love the amazing pairings).
