1. Will & I froze our butts off at Winter Jam: Our alternative radio station in Philly puts on free concerts sometimes (I talked about the Summer Block party we went to in August before). We snagged the free but limited tickets to see Andrew McMahon, Walk the Moon, Cold War Kids and The Gaslight Anthem. It was outside & COOOOOLD. Seeing Andrew McMahon was a dream because I was a huge Something Corporate fan back in the day and Walk the Moon was fun! Love CWK and it was fun but the first two stole the show. We left before Gaslight Anthem because Will’s layering game wasn’t as good as mine and he was too cold to handle it anymore.

2. We went to Eric Smith’s release party for his YA debut Inked — I was thrilled to celebrate this exciting day with Eric and FINALLY meet his lovely fiance. Will and I didn’t know anybody really but the venue was SO awesome and everyone was really nice. (Check out Eric’s guest post here on the blog)

3. Genevieve turned 3: I seriously can’t believe she is THREE!!! It was so cute because my sister said she woke up at 5am and said “IT’S MY BIRTHDAY TODAY!” so it was the first time she really UNDERSTOOD it. Had such a good day with them and then her party was fun.

4. SICKNESS PART 2– I was sick a lot in December and OH MY GOSH I CANNOT STAY HEALTHY in 2015 apparently. Nannying = GERM CENTRAL. I was doing so good. I got so lazy with trying to keep the germs at bay so THAT WILL TEACH ME.

5. I had a weird reading slump in January: It had nothing to do with what I was reading. I was reading good things. GREAT THINGS. BUUUUUT. It was like more like I didn’t read at all for the first 10 days of the month?? I just haven’t had a burning desire and think I may have gotten burnt out so I just let myself wait it out and figured I’d pick up a book when I wanted to.

1. A Darkness Strange & Lovely by Susan Dennard — awesome sequel!!
2. The Boy In the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds — so underrated!
3. The Girl With All The Gifts by M.R. Carey — book club pick that I really loved!
4. The Conspiracy of Us by Maggie E. Hall — I thought this one was a quick, fun read but I’m dying for book 2 after the way that ended.

” But this game here, I-DEE-clare war, is how life really goes down.”…. “I flip a card, then you flip a card,” he explained, and waited for me to turn my first card. A six. His was a ten. “Sometimes I win” — he raked the cards off to the side, close to him — ” and sometimes I lose.” He flipped another card. An eight. This time I turned a queen and beat him. “And sometimes,” he continued while flipping another one, “I can lose and lose and lose and I don’t know why. But there’s nothing I can do but just keep flipping the cards. Eventually I’ll win again. As long as you got cards to keep turning, you’re fine. Now, that’s life,” he said, pushing another hand I won over to me. ” — The Boy in the Black Suit by Jason Reynolds

Hmm the post where I talked about enjoying life for what it is or my review of I Was Here by Gayle Forman  just because I know it has been a very polarizing book amongst fans and would have loved to discuss it!

mr7

I STILL didn’t do anything on Youtube this month. I blame getting sick so often. No fun to be snotting all over the place while filming. (this is why blogging is so much easier because being film ready is HARD haha)

1. Four ways to pursue new friendships – I am notoriously bad at pursuing new friendships — it’s a combination of fearing rejection, getting set in my ways and also just really enjoying my own time so much I forget to let others in. This was really SUCH a great post about friendship with four easy ways to be more intentional! BUT FOR REAL WHY IS THERE NO TINDER FOR FRIENDSHIP?

2. The Possibility In Blank Spaces: “Don’t see the emptiness in your blank spaces, see the possibilities.”

3. How To Forgive Someone Who Has Hurt You: Oh dear god I needed this post. I really try to be a person who doesn’t hold grudges because it’s clutters up too much and life is too short for it most of the time. Plus, I want people to be gracious with me, as I am only human, so I try to do the same and give second chances/forgive (when it’s not an unhealthy situation). But when someone really DOES hurt me deep down I really struggle to let go. I internalize. I cry. I try to forgive and let go. I fail. I feel awful. IT SUCKS. This post is PERFECT and practical and makes so much sense.

4. Today Is Not Over Yet: I saw this post on a day where I had slept in and messed around on the computer for HOURS getting NOTHING done. I was just SO frustrated. SO FRUSTRATED. I had resigned myself to the fact it was a waste of a day now. Somehow I had gotten into my blog reader and this was the first post I saw.  Funny how you sometimes see the things you need to, huh? GREAT reminder.

5. Realistic Advice On How To Save Money To Travel: I’ve been in a situation I’ve hated for the past couple years of getting laid off. The financial struggles that brought made travel happen less for me and I can’t tell you how much it hurts my soul. For real. But I really do want to, as we rebuild our finances, want to prioritize and save money for travel. This article had some great things to think about plus linked to other resources!

1. My new infinity scarf my little sister got me for Christmas. — why didn’t I ever buy one of these before??
2. Young Adult PHL – My friend Kim got the ball running on having meetup group for Philly young adult lit lovers that I’m helping to co-run. SADLY I could not make the first meeting but can’t wait until next time! If you are in the Philly area, check it out!
3. Traditional Medicinals Nighty Night tea: I’ve been having trouble falling asleep lately so I wanted to try a tea to calm me a bit and I love this one! Downside: Will has been drinking it too (he rarely drinks tea) so I’m going through it sooo fast.

mr9

1. Apollycon: Very excited to have some book fun with a great lineup of authors!
2. Book signings!!: Sarah J. Maas & Samantha Shannon, Gayle Forman, Lauren Oliver!
3. Taking my older niece and nephews bowling: We were a little strapped for cash to get things they’d actually WANT for Christmas so we told them were going to take them out for pizza and bowling (they don’t often get to go out and do things because there are 7 kids) and FINALLY we found a weekend that works.

What’s something you’ve been wanting to do but haven’t because something has held you back?

(This question is something I have been thinking about A LOT for my own life because I can recognize things I want to do but haven’t and there are a number of things that have held me back — fear, not believing in myself, sometimes it’s my own fault such as laziness or something)

My favorite read of Jan was A Thousand Pieces of You by Claudia Gray. I haven’t had a 5 star read yet this year though (I did rate a self help book 5 stars, but it was about grief so I wouldn’t say it was exactly a happy read). My favorite quote from a book this month was:

“You’re the most important thing in this universe. You; This vessel; The people of this planet; Lovers, warriors, artists, leaders, dreams more numerous than stars. Each mind unique, each thought created for an instant and then broken apart to form new ones. You don’t understand the unbearable beauty of being you.” from This Shattered World by Amie Kaufman & Meagan Spooner

I don’t know, it just really put things into perspective for me and I love quotes like that.

A thing I’ve been holding myself back from is travel. We didn’t take any trips last year with the intent to save up to be able to take a longer trip this year. So now we’re dying to get away since it’s been so long but my husband started a new job last fall and hasn’t hit his 6 months yet so he has more limited vacation time. So just, time, money, job, and then I have fears about what if accidents happen while away from home and wouldn’t I rather just sit here and order pizza and have a movie marathon weekend from the comfort of home instead? lol I’m getting to a point where I think it’s ok to maybe let go of my travel bug a bit. So I’m keeping a journal of all the places books take me this year! (Still planning a trip though.)

So jealous for ACOTAR! I have no trouble believing it was the best read of your month 😛 And I didn’t know The boy in a black suit, I’ve added it to my WL!

About your question.. that’s such a great question! I guess that my answer would be.. learn how to seize the day. i’m shy and I care about what other people say even though I wish it wasn’t true. This means most of the times I don’t do what I really want or hold myself back from doing crazy but funny or unique things for fear of… I don’t know what exactly. But I do want that to change. I want to feel free to be myself and if others won’t like that self… well, that’ll be their problems cause I’ll be happy!

There are so many things that I really want to do – move out is a big one, specifically out of state. I’d really like to pursue all kinds of different activities though, even though I think I’ll probably be bad at most of them. I need to get used to seizing every opportunity I’m being given.

I’m really excited to pick up lots of the books you reviewed this month, like a Court of Thorns and Roses, I Was Here, and I’ll Meet You There! Plus, meeting Lauren Oliver sounds great – I love her books 🙂

My month has been pretty chill. I actually don’t consider my life “exciting.” I just spent the whole of January freaking out over exams and then realizing how easy they actually are when I finished. But really, I didn’t do too badly and I couldn’t even study [because it goes against my personality]

I love the posts you read. The one on forgiveness really struck me too. I don’t really think of myself as someone who holds grudges, but I am really quick to dislike people. I don’t know why. I just feel things really easy but on the bright side, it doesn’t take much to remove ill feelings.

I don’t actually listen to a lot of music, which sucks. i’m trying to broaden my tastes. all i listen to are bands and taylor swift [which i guess is better than the top 40 stuff I USED to listen to]

Great post! One thing I want to do is finish the fantasy novel I’m working on – for a long time, I told myself I wasn’t “ready” or “qualified” to write it yet. After some thinking, I realized I was just giving excuses, and I began writing a bit more towards the end of this month. But I would like to actually begin writing, for real, daily, in February and make some progress.

Also, I’m so glad I’m not the only one who’s been in a reading slump recently. I have absolutely no idea why I can’t sit down and read, but I just haven’t wanted to at all!

As always, I love finding out what you’ve been up to in the month that’s passed! It sucks that you’ve gotten sick a lot, but hooray for the awesome things that balanced it out 😉 Let’s see, to answer your question… I think I’ve always wanted to get into a workout routine (a solid one, mind you) and I just always procrastinate. I CANNOT KEEP DOING THAT because I want to be healthier, with better stamina and endurance overall.

New obsessions? Clementine!! I’ve become so obsessed with them lol.
Any new song recs?? “Fools Gold” by: One Direction, “Hide” by: Joy Williams, and “Middle Of Your Heart” by: For King & Country.
Best books you read this month?? “The Assassin’s Blade” by: Sarah J. Maas. Along with my rereads of ToG and CoM. I’m currently about 70% the way through HoF!!

Obsession for this month: e.e. cummings. I’ve always been aware that he, you know, existed, but I never really got around to reading any of his poetry until this month, and just. UGH. It is too gorgeous for words (er, somewhat ironically) and I can’t even fathom how I didn’t know about this man before now. So I’ve kind of been devouring his poems and trying to absorb his writing style a little. 😀

Something I’ve been wanting to do? Probably publish my book. I was really, really crossing my fingers it would be in February, but then my depression started acting up and I’ve had to take a step back and rethink my priorities a little. Disappointing, yes, but I think it’s probably for the better in the long run – I guess focusing on myself is important, even if I have to push other things back, you know?

I’m so jealous that you got to read ACOTAR! My favourite reads this month were the first three Throne of Glass books – read them all over a single weekend, staying up until 2am every night just to keep reading.
And thanks for the link to the post about ‘Today is not over yet.’ Definitely needed to read that today…even though it’s only 11:22am.
As for something I’ve been wanting to do but didn’t because something was holding me back – well, I had been wanting to get back into blogging for months but life and anxiety got in the way…until last week! I’ve already written two new posts and have plenty more planned out and started. I’ve also been meaning to start Pilates training to help with back pain, but alas the moneys.
Hope you have a good February! SJ Maas, Samantha Shannon and Gayle Forman all in one month!

I love your monthly Rewind! It is so fun to see such a variety of items in your wrap up.

My favorite book of the month by far (and one of my faves of all time) was All the Bright Places! You must read it if you haven’t already! I actually featured your blog as my favorite of the month on my monthly wrap up!

I’m wanting to write more and share my writing, but it’s such a new thing for me, and I am nervous to share it with others. What if they don’t like it? What if it really blows chunks? Should I keep spending time writing another novel?

May February bring you lots of amazing experiences!

I’ll be giving that cover of Shake it Off a listen later on. I’m so pumped to see T Swift in concert later this year.

Before I even answer the question at the end I must tell you that you shared some posts I NEEDED to hear. The four ways to pursue new friendships and today is not over posts…I needed those so much. And I think it’s all related to my answer to your question.

I’ve been wanting to embrace what is around me and enjoy my life here. I realize I am the only one that has been holding me back. With moving away from home, leaving a job I loved, and basically starting over with just my husband…I struggled. I wouldn’t change it for the world, but I know I have not put forth my best effort. I would blame it on lack of money (because that has been such an issue this past year) or cruddy hours or knowing no one here, but it’s all my fault and it’s all excuses. I feel like I’ve needed to like officially make my decision to do that, to embrace the unknown and try to make something of a life here. I have so wanted to move back home, and I think I’ve been scared about making connections only to leave them. Not anymore. I think I have finally made that decision where enough is enough and things are finally starting to chance. I really hate that I’ve been the one holding myself back, but it’s the truth and it’s time I started to admit it.

Great post! Seems that you had some awesome stuff happen, though I’m sorry you’ve been battling sickness and a slight reading slump. Here’s to hoping February is better!

“Why is it so hard to pick my next read?” — “Why is it so hard to pick my next read?” — she says as she is surrounded by piles on piles of books on the floor and desk and packed on her bookshelf and book cart. (Partner @berkleypub - thanks for the review copy).⁣
⁣
I managed to pick my next read, as chronicled in these photos, but it was not easy with so many options!

Decided to go with a most anticipated book of 2022 for me from an author who has written books I’ve really enjoyed.
⁣
I am about halfway through and cruising along because I NEED to figure out if Joseph is the worst or what really is going on here in this story that starts with 3 women being stood up by the same guy on Valentine’s Day. I feel like there is something more to this one but I can’t quite put my finger on it yet! ⁣
⁣
Hoping to finish it this weekend! What are you reading this weekend? And do you have trouble picking your next read? How do you choose amongst all the options?
Sunshine on my face and a mass market fitting perf Sunshine on my face and a mass market fitting perfectly in my hands.⁣…
⁣
Truly felt like there were zero things more joyful than the warm sun on my face after colder, dreary days and remembering how much I love the feel of reading a mass market paperback. It’s probably a very specific little joy of mine and I definitely reveled in it today.⁣
⁣
But the real big joy has been rereading this book and experiencing it all over again before @bridgertonnetflix season 2 — especially the Pall Mall scene. And something to do with a 🐝 😅 iykyk⁣
⁣
With all the joy I’m getting out of this reread it makes me wonder why I don’t prioritize rereading like I used to before I started blogging 10 years ago.⁣
⁣
In my head I just want to experience all the new stories and try to make a dent in my TBR but I forget, until I do it, the genuine pleasure in revisiting old companions and how it’s a different side of reading one can experience — the nostalgia, the person I’ve become since reading the book and the way I approach a book already knowing what happens. Well the general sense of what happens because my memory is 💩!⁣
⁣
Anyways that’s what I’m up to currently. Trying to finish this up so I can pack my books for a short trip I’m going on later this week. My first ✈️ since 2019!⁣
⁣
Whatcha reading? Do you reread often? And tell me a little teeny tiny joy from your day.
If I was a person who made Reels I would somehow m If I was a person who made Reels I would somehow mash up the “screaming, crying” Blank Space clip with the “emotional damage” refrain to the Bastille’s Pompeii to let you know how I feel after the last few chapters of #TheGildedCage !!⁣
⁣
And if you don’t understand what that means, I’m sorry 😅⁣
⁣
But woo boy do I need the third installment of this series!!! But I also think I’m going to be even more emotional damaged after that one soooo.⁣
⁣
Seriously, one of the best simple joys of my life is the feeling of being so wholly and totally invested in a series that you have to remind yourself it’s fiction lest you spend all day in bed crying about the devastated look a character had on their face — a face you didn’t even see with your own two eyes but you are so invested that you feel nauseous and gutted like you sure did.⁣
⁣
Just me orrrrrr?⁣
⁣
No but for real. If you love YA fantasy, go start #theprisonhealer so you can be caught up when The Blood Traitor comes out in June (and be my emotional support person for the duration of reading it). I love these characters and I dying to see what happens next.

Have you read this series yet? Last book series that had you SCREAMING CRYING THROWING UP because of the EMOTIONAL DAMAGE it inflicted?

⁣
But y’all Black Cake is so good!! I’m almost halfway through and I know it’s A Choice to declare it one of the best books I’ve read all year but I’m feeling bold based on how it’s going.⁣
⁣
I love a good family story (especially one with a family secret!) and this is top notch. The writing is 👌🏻 and I know I’m going to be screaming when the pieces come together!⁣
⁣
In other news, I’m 65% of the way through The Dry by Jane Harper and I’m enjoying it so much that I ended up staying on the treadmill twice this weekend after my allotted time was over just so I could keep listening.⁣
⁣
Will and I FINALLY started Ted Lasso this weekend. It is a damn delight!! For all the hype and praise, it has overdelivered for me which is kind of shocking because normally hype is scary. I told Will that I feel like all the praise hasn’t even come close to how much I could love it. We are only 7 episodes in so no spoilers!⁣
⁣
I’m kinda mad we sat on starting it for so long but at the same time I think the timing is right to help me see my way out of this February funk I have found myself in the past couple weeks.⁣
⁣
Anyways, hope everyone is having a good weekend! Have you read Black Cake or The Dry? Where are my Ted Lasso fans at? I’m happy to join your ranks! Also please tell me your fave character bc I am finding it impossible to pick this far!

I was initially drawn, like I always am, to the daughter losing a mother storyline and an exploration of that grief but I was so taken by the father/daughter relationship between two people who were left untethered by losing the person who held their family together.

Greta and her father don't see eye-to-eye on basically anything when they are thrown together on this Alaskan cruise, a trip Greta's father and mother were supposed to take, and you can feel the tension of their long-standing tumultuous and fractured relationship -- a relationship that feels like its hanging in a balance and could not recover.

The two are both hurting so much from this loss and it took my breath away at times in how true it rang to be in your own grief bubble and feeling like the loss is yours and yours alone while forgetting about the others shouldering their own piece of this loss. I loved watching them very slowly SEE one another.

I can't say enough good things about this one -- great setting, Greta's music, the meet-cute, the messy and imperfect nature of family and love. Definitely recommend!⁣
I was on a hot reading streak and now for the past I was on a hot reading streak and now for the past few days I get all cozy in bed to read at night and am asleep by 4 pages in. Will got a kick out of waking up to me basically spooning my kindle. Ebbs and flows, y’all.⁣
⁣
Let’s do a little reading update with an edition of Last, Current & Next.⁣
⁣
Last - The Girl With the Louding Voice: Adunni is by far one of the most memorable voices I’ve read in a book in a very long time. Her hope and resilience in the face of some awful situations kept me turning the pages and rooting for her. I can’t believe it took me so long to finally read it. Highly recommend!⁣
⁣
Now - Deep in Providence (thank you @fiercereads ): I’m about halfway through after I carved out some time to read early this morning and I’m enjoying this story of grief, love and magic. I’m nervous about these girls trying to resurrect their dead friend though! When I put it down today I was getting a little creeped by some things happening.⁣
⁣
Next - The Kiss of Deception: I’m rereading the first book in this YA fantasy series because it’s been forever and I really wanna finish the trilogy. I’ve been really wanting to go through series I’ve left unfinished for years (not for lack of interest but because I suck at juggling all the series I start) so this is one of them. I remember loving it so I’m excited to dive in and binge.

Whatcha reading? Have you read any of these? Anyone else on the struggle train with reading at night right now?
Braved the downpour to get my library holds. I hop Braved the downpour to get my library holds. I hope they are worth it! Please tell me they are!⁣
⁣
This is also, before I get to the stack, an appreciation post for my tiny library and wonderful librarians.⁣
⁣
They normally open at 9am during the week —except Fridays. Did I remember that? Nope. So I was I was SO proud of Riley and I for getting our butts in gear to be for around opening time to drop off a stack and get my new ones.⁣
⁣
And alas, I go to open the door and it’s locked. Now I’m holding Riley’s hand, two tote bags full of books, an umbrella that I’m trying to keep over the both of us, mind you. I’m thoroughly confused until it hits me that it’s Friday.⁣
⁣
So I’m like, welp, guess we are just dropping off in the bin so I try to grab my books out and put them in one-handed while juggling the umbrella and less than enthused Riley.⁣
⁣
Mercifully the door opens and our children’s librarian takes pity on us and lets us in to drop off and pick up the holds.⁣
⁣
Is this what being a VIP as a celebrity feels like?? Sure feels like it to me 😆 for real though, it pays to be a regular and have a cute kid in tow who is being pelted with rain.⁣
⁣
Anyways excited about this stack but especially Wahala, Daughter of the Moon Goddess and How High We Go In The Dark the most.⁣
⁣
Also have been meaning to snag The World Gives Way after @jordys.book.club recommendation!⁣
⁣
Have you read any of these? Any that you think were definitely worth the rain-soaked journey for??⁣
⁣
Alright now I’m off to curl up and read on this rainy, dreary day which is really what I think a day like this is meant for.

More about Jamie

Jamie is a 32 year old married lady (with a new baby!!) who is in denial that she's actually that old to be a married lady and a mom. When she's not reading you can find her doing Pilates followed by eating ice cream, belting out Hamilton (loud and offkey) and having adventures with her husband, daughter and rescue dog.

Looking for something?

A real life reading photo because I couldn’t be A real life reading photo because I couldn’t be bothered to make it pretty — mismatching fuzzy sucks, coffee almost gone and Christmas pajama pants that are super old.⁣
No but seriously every year I contemplate organizi No but seriously every year I contemplate organizing a search party for one Katjay Millay who wrote one beautiful and amazing book and then...vanished.

Like for real. She wrote a tweet in 2015 that she was taking a few weeks off and then.... no tweets, no new books. Radio silence.

I hope she’s okay, for real, and that she knows I obsessively stalk Goodreads/Twitter/the internet to make sure I haven’t missed new book news from her at least twice a year. 🥺

Is there any author who you’ve been waiting forever for a new release from??

I’d also like to add YA author Sarah Ockler to this list! Last release was 2015 😭😭

The Sky is Everywhere — it’s out today on AppleTV+ and I can’t wait to sob my brains out. One of my absolute most favorite books ever by one of my all time favorite authors. It’s gorgeous and heartbreaking in its poignant depiction of grief, first love and healing — all woven together in Jandy’s signature gorgeous, lyrical writing.⁣

Along For The Ride (out April 22) — one of a handful upcoming @sdessen books being adapted in the near future and I can’t wait! These books are so near and dear to my heart.⁣
⁣
No release dates yet for The Summer I Turned Pretty tv series (the ultimate coming of age summertime story!) or The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight (the cutest meet cute of all meet cutes all set in 24 hours) but I am HYPED and have all my fingers crossed for 2022 🤞🤞

Have you read any of these? Anyone else hyped for these adaptations.

Also, for the past few years, I’ve kept a running list of books becoming movies/tv shows for the year. Head to my bio to check out the list! I try to update it weekly and keep on top of it all but life ya know 😆 but I try!

Either way, after loving Jennifer E. Smith's YA books for years, it's been a real treat to also read her debut picture book with Riley (we loved!!) as well as her adult debut out in 3 weeks!⁣
